Reducing trim size via PDF

I'm trying to take a large project (dozens of different books) and attempt to process it at different trim size.
Changing this in the document set-up is out of the question as the text/images take up entire width of page. Since the project has bleeds, I cannot just PDF it to the desired trim size and fit content as we need to show the bleeds and registration marks. My goal is to somehow process a PDF that reduces the width and height proportionately, understanding that this will likely compromise the bleeds at the top and bottom of page.
I'm having a lot of difficult wrapping my head around how best to do this. My attempts have only succeeded in reducing the size of the PDF, not of the actual trim of the pages inside the PDF.
It may be that the answer is ridiculously obvious, but I can't figure it out.
Current trim size: 9 x 10.875
Desired trim size: 8.375 x 10.875
Thanks,
J

I know. Cropping the width isn't an option, page is too tight. Distortion MAY BE an option. I'm not sure how bad it would be with only a .625 inch reduction. How would i best do this option?
My intended option was to process a PDF that reduced the width down to 8.375. The height reducing proportionately would obviously reduce the page the shorter than its original height. I think i have enough bleed on top and bottom of page to cover the white space that would be created by this. I want to show my management how this would look (even if the bleed doesn't cover it enough). I know it's possible to create PDFs that show the extra white space, i just don't know how to do that within the crop marks.

i have a pdf document which has been designed to a particular size eg.A4 however the pdf needs to be a smaller size eg. A5. Is it possible to reduce the size OR does the artwork need to be re-designed to the correct A5 size?

Did you turnto high quality display. The resolution has to be higher.
If you use PDF, take care that the PDFs are PDF/X-4.

  • How to reduce file size of pdf documents from 12 mb to 4 mb

i am trying to reduce file size at adobe reader original document size is 12 mb i need to get it down to 4 mb , please help how

You might be asking for the impossible or the easy. Acrobat Pro can reduce the size of PDF files, but nobody can promise any particular PDF can shrink.

  • Change trim size in pdf?

    Hi,
I'm very new to working with pdf, so any help is very appreciated!  I have an 8x11 pdf document I need to turn into 6x9.  No matter how I set the printing, the file still reads 8x11, and still prints at 8x11.  How to I change the trim size?  If I crop anything, I just cut into the text.  Do I need a different program?  Thanks again for any help.

Thanks for the response.  I'm not the one who is printing the pdf out, it's being taken to a printer, so I'm not sure how it needs to be prepared. When I look at the properties of the pdf it says 8x11.  Does that need to change to 6x9 for the printer to print it out at the right size?

  • Cannot reduce file size with PDF X

Hi, have created a 1 page document in pages that has some hi-res digital SLR shots, so 5pics has pushed file size to 21mb. I cannot email this around, so went help hunting and determined that pdfx was the answer to my dreams. It all works in principle, except the vital bit, i.e. after pdfx'ing, my new file, it was still around 21mb......managed to then use GRABIT as a bodge to get the file out the door. Any clues? Mac Help indicates that this should work or am I missing something? The aperture brochure is over 700 pages and full of images and that weighs in at only 20.4mb !!!!!
Hopefully its me missing something obvious, or do I need Adobe writer !!!!

I kinda figured that as an option, but I just want to be able to slot items in and then decompress on mass to minimum file size. The pro tip of the week eludes to opening text edit but I cannot open a pages doc or pdf with text edit. Just looking for the least number of key strokes and things not to have to remember when I am banging a document together. There must be a faster way. It also shows the quartz settings on line, but cannot see this anywhere in Leopard......

  • Letters disappear when reducing file size of PDF.

I have a multi-page PDF file that contains bitmap images and vector text. It was originally created in InDesign and exported to PDF. When I exported the PDF at 300 dpi, everything rendered beautifully. However, when I reduced  the image quality through the PDF optimizer (set all images to 80 dpi at high quality), random letters disappered from my text. Weird, since these are vectors and should not be affected by lowered dpi settings anyway.
The gaps are there where the letters should be, and I can even use my text cursor to copy and paste those missing letters into a text file, for example. So basically, all the data is still there, the letters just aren't showing up. This is not resolved by zooming in, and most unfortunately, the letters also do not show up when the document is printed. I have all my fonts embedded. Could this be due to the fact that I am using a lightweight font? (Verlag Extra Light). The letters that go missing seem to be completely at random. I have Acrobat Professional 8.

Thanks for your suggestions. Yes, they all say embedded subset. I will try to replace the fonts just to see what happens, though Verlag is pretty central to the design of this project. I can't see it being a quality issue since it's a high-end font from Hoefler & Frere Jones (not to mention specially purchased for the project!)
I will note that I was able to make some progress by using the Advanced Editing -> Touch Up Text tool to manually retype the missing letters. I did get them to show up that way. Unfortunately this is very time consuming and tends to mess up the text formatting. Still curious what causes this.

  • How do I reduce size of PDF?

The pdf for my community newsmagazne has 16 pages.
When I send it to the company which prints it, I get the message - PDF is 40.7 MB - exceeds 20.0 MG used by this server.
    Print size is 100%.
I send PDF as Best - Better is not good enough.
    What can I do?

Are there a lot of images in the document? If so, are they high-resolution, and used at a smaller size than the original? If so, one way to reduce the file size is to edit the images in a third-party application (such as Photoshop, or one of the many cheaper alternatives), so that the image is re-sized to the dimensions that are used in the document.
OS X used to have a built-in PDF reduction function in its Quartz filters. This feature was removed in 10.5, but it can be restored by using this software.
PDF Shrink is a $35 application that will automatically reduce the file size of PDFs (along with many other features). Adobe Acrobat Pro also has a built-in method for reducing file size of PDFs, but that is also an expensive tool that you may not have.
Do be aware that for the most part file-size reduction in PDFs works by reducing the resolution of images. If the original images are the same dimensions as that used in the final document, then any file down-sizing will involve a compromise in image quality.
As a workaround, you could also simply burn the full file onto a CD and send that, or use an online upload service like YouSendIt.

    Cathy,
You have posted your question in a forum dedicated to the Final Cut Studio application Color. It is a very specialized program to grade (adjust) the color in video/film images. We know nothing regarding PDFs.
Have you tried posting this on an Adobe support site?

  • Reducing size of pdfs

Please can someone help? I have a new Macbook Pro, I used to be able to reduce size of pdfs on my last Mac, but how do I do it on my new one?
    Thanks

AFAIK, you have to use a third-party application, such as Adobe Acrobat, to reduce the sizes of PDF files.
I don't know that Preview can save a reduced file size - Acrobat can. If you want to give it a try, you can download one of the Adobe CS6 packages that include AcroPro.

  • Reducing size of pdf in OSX Lion

    Ladies and Gents,
Can you please let me know how I can reduce the size of pdf docs in OSX Lion. I use to be able to save as pdf, open it again and then "save as" with reduce option. In lion it only shows "Save version" instead of "save as". Thanks in advance and regards, Theo.

Hey, don't lose hope... I found this thread by Jerome Colas, about reducing PDF file size
    Try these steps:
    1. Download the quartz filters made by Jerome Colas LINK
    2. Move the FILTERS folder on your Library folder ---> /YOUR HARD DRIVE/Library/
    3. Open Automator, create Application (Not Workflow!!!)
    4. Search and drag "Open Finder items" to the right
    5. Search and drag "Apply Quartz Filter to PDF Documents"
              - when prompted "This action will change the PDF files passed into it.  Would you like to add a Copy Finder Items action so that the copies are changed and your originals are preserved?" Click Don't Add
    6. From the Filter drop down, select Reduce to 150 dpi average quality - STANDARD COMPRESSION
    7. Save it to your Desktop.
    8. To resize PDF, just drag the PDF file over the Automator Application you saved on your Desktop.
Your PDF file size is now reduced, without compromising the quality!
Thanks to Jerome Colas for the wonderful quartz filter!

  • Issues in Reducing file size on Acrobat 9.3.1

The text has been merged or split on Acrobat 9.3.1 Pro by using the option "Reduce File Size" or "PDF Optimizer". There is no issue in the earlier version of Acrobat (7.0 & 8.0). We are using the Mac OS between 10.4.11 to 10.6.2. I have attached screenshots for your reference; please look at the Word "Issues" has been split after reducing file size on Acrobat 9.3.1. Is there any other way to do Hi-Res PDF to Low-Res PDF without any issue? Kindly help me out to sustain the best process in future.

I found a similar problem with text styled for small caps. It was fine in the original PDF, but became lowercase in the reduced file. The reduction process probably throws away characters from fonts that Acrobat decides are unnecessary.
I was able to partially solve the problem by combining multiple PDFs (book chapters) and selecting the smallest file size icon at the bottom of the page. Alternately, I chose a web-quality preset, which also worked. The file size might not be quite as small, but the files were good.

  • Is there a way to save a PDF at a reduced percentage in an effort to reduce the trim size proportionately without cropping?

I have saved a multi-page PDF with desired trim/bleed for print, and now would like to re-save the PDF at a smaller percentage/smaller trim size for use within a digital edition online.

    Hi Anubha,
Actually, I have discovered that it is possible to re-save a PDF in Preview
    at a smaller trim dimension.
    Thank you for your suggestion.

  • How do I reduce the size of an AI CS6 file when saving as a pdf?

I'm trying to save an ai file to a PDF to send to the printer but the file is huge. How can I reduce the size without losing quality? I have already rasterized my images and flattened the artwork. Thanks!

How huge is huge?  Are all of the images Placed at 100% or have they been scaled?  What are the printer's requirements?  What are the physical dimensions of the file?  And, how are you creating the PDF?  There are a few ways to minimize size, starting with the file itself and the printer's requirements.  I find, sometimes, Exporting > TIFF > Open in Ps > Save As Photoshop PDF is helpful.  I also use Distiller which trims files nicely and is customizable.

  • Why is my word and pdf files so large? How can I reduce the size?

My document contains mostly photos from a database via a path to the actual jpeg photos on disk.
There are 39 jpeg photos + a small amount of text with each photo.
The 39 jpeg photos on the disk add up to be 5.79 mb.
If I export the crystal reports document as [Microsoft Word (97-2003) Non Editable] the, the file size is 36.8 mb.
If I export the same data as a [Microsoft Word (97-2003) Editable] the file size is only 3.1 mb.
That is a difference of 33.7 mb! Why?
Also, when I export the same data to a PDF file it is much larger than I think it should be; 12.7 mb.
Why is my word and PDF files so large?
How can I reduce the size of the word and PDF files? (without reducing the photo quality).
Are there any tools to post process the Word or PDF files to reduce the file size?

You can't, extra size is to hold the details

  • Is there a way to reduce the size of a final PDF created for print when saving a file?

Is there a way to reduce the size of a final PDF created for print when saving in any software (especially illustrator)? I don't want any quality to decrease at the same time. Thanks!

Personally I would avoid optimizing the PDF's via Adobe Acrobat Pro unless you understand what you are removing from the PDF; having said that, it is the most effective way to reduce the file-size in the right hands.
If I am sending out layouts for commercial print I change my default Print / Export setting from Standard to PDF/A-1b:2005 (CMYK). This will resolve a lot of common print problems for print-ready documents and it should embed your fonts and flatten transparencies etc.
If your document is still too large you run an Audit Space Usage using Adobe Acrobat Pro. In the left pane enable 'Content' and then hit the button in the top left corner of the Content Pane and choose Audit Space Usage.
