Reducing Video Noise

I have a short clip that was shot in poor lighting. Is there something in video effects that will allow me to reduce the graininess?

Hi Sheldon,
You can remove the video noise using Remove Grain effect.
After Effects Help | Noise and Grain effects
Hope that helps!

Is there a way to reduce video noise in FCE and if so, how?

I'm a little surprised since it is such a common problem in video taken in low light. I currently use Pinnacle studio on the PC side, which is a little more robust then imovie but far from FCE, and it has a pretty nice noise reduction filter which cleans up the video considerably. I took a poorly lit video clip which I was able to easily clean up in Pinnacle, into an apple store yesterday to see if I could clean it up equally or better in FCE and could do quite a bit except for the noise reduction. I'm doing this test due to my interest in switching to a Mac, mainly for video reasons. Are there plugins that could help with noise?

  • Reduce video noise -Final cut pro x

    Hello People,
I filmed some clips in low light conditions... so the footage has some video noise.
Do you know a method to remove the noise?
I have Final Cut Pro X and Motion 5...
    Please write me soon, Matteo.
PS: I'm Italian and I don't understand Englishe very well..... sorry!

    Ciao Matteo,
The best video denoiser I've used is Neat Video:
    http://www.neatvideo.com/index.html
    It's really quite magic!
According to their website, it works in Motion 5, and there's even a free demo you can try.

  • Can I reduce video noise in iMovie 11 (a.k.a. random pixels)?

My video has a bunch of random pixels, and can I get rid of them using iMovie or other free software!

In Final Cut Pro X, you can do this automatically through the multicam feature. You can also adjust the audio to the 1/100 of a frame.
In iMovie, you should turn on the wave forms of both the movie track and the Zoom track. You should be able to visually see the spike of the clapper sound. You can manually drag the audio track so it lines up with the video track. In iMovie, you can adjust to the nearest frame (not 1/100 of a frame).

  • How can i reduce the noise on this video?

I have used Keylight to key some chromokey footage onto a white background.
However, I still have a lot of noise on the video, by this I mean fuzzyness, instead of good rich colors - you can see for yourself if you download a sample of the file which I have linked to here:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MmBGI-JUMk
Obviously the actual file has proper dimensions unlike the YouTube example! This example also doesn't show the noise quite as well as the actual Flash file, it's a little more intense than it looks here.
How can I make the video fuller in color, to reduce the noise....?
    Thanks.

The noise looks like genuine camera noise from poor lighting with ramped up sensor sensitivity. Therefore, as a start, I'd run the clip through a pre-comp and use the Remove Grain effect or tools like RevisionFX' DE:Noise, Red Giant's Key Correct Pro and so on. If it's DV/ HDV or similar, some de-blocking by ways of similar tools is also recommended. This should already improve matters notably. Then, as Sébastien said, study the super tight junk matte tutorial and apply the technique to your footage. The less pixels to key, the more efficiently the keyer can expand its range on the remaining ones. If you then still experience jaggy/ noisy edges a second application of the aforementioend plug-ins might do the trick. Other options include tools like Twixtor, SmoothKit, RSMB, RE:Fill etc. to mend holes and smear gaps. also, since the person is wearing dar clothes, the old trick of using a dark Inner Glow might also be applicable.

  • Adjust Video Noise

So I would like to adjust some video noise of a clip recorded in low light. Any suggestions? I searched and found an addon called neat video but not working correctly. Any info greatly appreciated on how to adjust this video noise. Thanks

Actually I am looking at answers for both. When I posted this topic, I was originally looking to adjust video noise to several clips recorded in low light. Then I came across once clip, where the background audio noise is too loud where you cannot hear the person speaking. It happened to be when I responded, I was so caught up on the audio noise reduction search that I forgot what my original topic was all about. So yes I am looking at adjusting both, video noise recorded during low lights and reducing background noise on a clip. Thanks again and I apologize for the confusion... I can post a new subject for audio noise...

  • Video noise in exported blu-ray

Hi - I don't know where to start with this one. I exported a project from PPro to Encore for menus, etc, and built a blu-ray ISO image. So far, so good. I burn a BD-R from that image using imgburn, then I took the disc upstairs to watch it on the big screen, and YUCK!
Before I go on, here's the details:
    Win 7 Pro SP1
    Core i5
    8GB memory
    200 PATA for OS, programs,
    500GB SATA for media
    500GB for scratch disc, etc
    1TB e-sata for backups
    Production Premium CS5.5
    PPro 5.5.2
i have CS6 waiting, but I want to finish this project before installing CS6.
~2 hour film of a stage musical production, plus a bit of behind-the-scenes/backstage stuff
    Footage from 2 x Sony Z1P cams (1440x1080 1.33 HDV), and 1 x Canon XF300 (1920x1080 1.0 - I think it uses XDCAM)
Due to the nature of the stage lighting, i.e. lots of deep colours, this footage needed a great deal of colour correction and frequently needed big boosts to brightness. I mainly used the RGB colour corrector, as it was easy to boost or reduce the red, blue and/or green gain to get a reasonable result. I was mostly trying to return skin tones to something resembling human, and leave the rest of the colours alone. Sometimes I needed to use "Change to colour" because the lighting crew used a different colour backdrop from one night to the next
I used brightness and contrast adjustments to start, and played around with gamma and overall gain to fine tune the brightness. Also had the reference monitor on display - mostly RGB but also YC waveform.
Anyway, playback in PPro looked OK, I thought it was as good as it was going to get, so I added chapter markers, exported to Encore, built the menus, FINALLY got a clean bill of health from "Check project", built a blu-ray ISO image on the hard drive, then burnt a BD-R for testing.
Took it upstairs to the lounge room (where the blu-ray player, big screen and audio systems live), loaded and started to play. The menus look and work OK (buttons, scene selections, etc). Here's the strange parts:
    1. the footage from the Canon and ONLY the Canon, appears to have had a lot of noise ADDED (video noise, not audio). This was the first time I used this camera, and I noted that when light levels got really low, the auto gain control kicked in, but it also got very noisy, so I had to decide to limit the AGC, take underexposed footage and "fix it in post". Now it looks OK on my monitor (ASUS 24" 1920x1080), only a little bit of noise that I can put up with but when played back on the blu-ray player and big screen, it looks ridiculous.
    2. some footage from one of the Sony cams is way over-bright - that's something that I can easily correct.
I matched brightnes and colour from the 3 cameras as best I could, and it looks OK in PPro on the program monitor, but looks awful when exported and played via the blu-ray player to the big screen. I put the same disc in the blu-ray drive on my computer and watched the film on my monitor, and it looks OK. I mounted the ISO as a disc, and watched that with VLC, and it looks OK.
I took one section of "noisy" video, approx 60 seconds, and exported it 3 times, playing around with bit rates and noise reduction settings. The uncorrected export was very noisy, and each of the 2 "corrected" versions are improvements, but all of them are very noisy compared to the same footage previewed in PPro.
The export setting "use previews" was unchecked, so presumably it re-rendered everything for the build.
Where should I look to identify the place where the video noise is being added or exacerbated? It's ONLY on the Canon footage, so could it be a codec issue? I started to play with the footage in After Effects, but I haven't had a lot of experience with AE yet.
    cheers

Have you calibrated the HD system in your lounge with something like
Amazon.com: Spears & Munsil High-Definition Benchmark Blu-ray Disc Edition [Blu-ray]: Stacey Spears, Don Munsil: Movies & TV
    or
Amazon.com: Digital Video Essentials: HD Basics [Blu-ray]: Joe Kane: Movies & TV?
If not, then do that before making any judgments.  I personally like the Spears & Munsil disc.

  • Video noise / grain reduction

There was a previous discussion on grain and noise reduction but I believed it expired. What filters/ plug ins/ other apps have people used successfully in reducing grain and video noise?
    thx

There's some great thoughts in this thread:

  • Video noise reduction software?

Sorry... but I've asked this question in the Tiger OS forum about video noise reduction for iMovie HD 6 and/or QT files but haven't got far with it.
If anyone on this forum has any suggestions about what I could use to reduce visual noise - basically transferred film grain in digitisation, I'd really appreciate it
(better still a free software download or trial would be even more appreciated)?

I'm not aware of any free good denoiser.
Neat video has a trial, but I think it's either watermarked or limited to SD. But it is really good and the trial will give you an idea of what iyt can do and whether it's worth the outlay for your purposes.
Another option is Adobe After Effects. A bit of a learning curve,  but they have a trial.
    Good luck.

  • How do I deal with a lot of video noise in underexposed aeras. This also happens at low ISO

I seem to have a lot of high video noise in underexposed aeras. This is specially visible in the blacks, it shows more because of the blacks and happens at all ISO values. On other forums I read this can be caused by camera been used a lot and or to much ISO. What do you recommend so I can have less noise in the videopicture?

Some users had reported a similar issue in 3.3Beta2, but  it was resolved for them in 3.3Beta3, but it seems like that didn't work out for you.
Can you share a small project that reproduces the issue at [email protected] and [email protected], so that we can look at the issue?

  • HDMI/DVI video noise when running with 9400M

I have a late 2008 MBP. I connect it to my Sony 52W3000 using Apple's mini DisplayPort to DVI adaptor and a DVI to HDMI cable. When I use the Nvidia 9400M (Better Battery Life in Energy Saver system preference) I get lots of video noise in the form of little red pixels. When I switch to the 9600M (Higher Performance in Energy Saver) the image is beautiful and without noise.
Is this problem inherent with the 9400M? Is it Apple's DisplayPort -> DVI dongle? I would rather conserve battery AND have a decent video image. I'd also like to get a Mac Mini to as an HTPC but don't want the terrible noise I get from the MBP when using the 9400M. I somehow doubt it's an Nvidia problem.

I have a UniBody MacBook (before they were re-branded as PRO), with a GeForce 9400M. I get nasty white noise when using the Mini-DisplayPort to DVI cable, connecting to a Samsung 2333HD monitor via DVI (no HDMI involved here). I put a video on YouTube to document the issue. Quality is not great, but you can clearly see the white pixel noise on a black background. Looks like the sky at night. I'm wondering if this is a case for my AppleCare Protection...

  • HP Z400 600W PSU, reduce the noise?

Hello, i bought the 600W psu a few months ago because i wanted to have a great graphic card.
But i think the noise from the computer is way to loud. Im verry sure its the PSU since the 475W version was verry quiet when i tried it.
Can i do anything to reduce the noise from this thing? Open it, replace the fan to a better one perhaps?
I know there are some people who have managed to get a ATX PSU into their HP z400 using a "HP Z400 PSU to standard atx adaptor" but i dont really know  how to build a cable like that... Its probably easy but i have no knowledge about things like this.

  • Is there a video noise reduction facility on final cut pro x?

İs there a video noise reduction facility or plugin on final cut pro x?

I appreciate this is an old thread and things have moved on but...
I have just been given a whole load of GoPro footage to work with that is very noisey (video noise) and needs some work.
FCP X still doesn't seem to like 'Neat Video' which works well (at times) but apart from the hang-ups takes a lifetime to render. The 'FxFactory' module isn't really doing it for me... Has anyone tried the 'Pixel Studios' plug in contained in their ProLens offering?
    Thanks

  • Can I reduce video file size on iPad?

Is there an iOS app - iMovie for instance - that will allow me to reduce video file size on my iPad, without having to use a computer?

There are various Apps in the App Store that will compress a video file, try search on Video Slimmer or Video Compression.  Another option is to use a different App for recording the video in the first place; I use MoviePro quite extensively, it allows 5 different presets for resolution, bit rate etc. for recording video.

  • How to reduce videos in iPhoto from iPhone for mailing or uploading

How do you reduce videos from an iPhone 4s for e-mailing or uploading to sites like Flickr? iPhoto gives you a choice of photo sizes to e-mail but doesn't allow you to e-mail videos. The videos are on my iPhone and my iMac.

You can export (or drag) the videos out of the iPhoto interface and drop them onto your Desktop (which will copy them from the iPhoto Library onto the Desktop).
You can then double-click the new video file on the Desktop to open it with Quicktime (hopefully this is your default video-playing app). Within Quicktime, click on Quicktime in the menubar and use the Export feature to create a smaller version of your video file. That smaller version of your file will be better compressed for internet uploading.
If you have Quicktime X, then you will also have a Share menu in the Menubar with some built-in sharing options such as YouTube that can be more convenient.
