Redundant mail without xsan?

Scenario:
Two buildings, A and B. Both have 1 internet line each. Both have 1 computer running OS X server. Currently all of our mail runs through the server in building A. I know this is not ideal since if the internet connection goes down in building A, our mail goes down too. From my understanding, an MX record could be created so that all mail would be routed to building B when building A goes down. Is there an easy way to link the datastores together (some sort of replication or sync?) so that mail will appear to have never gone down?
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
-Matt
PS: I have a proposal in now to get another connection added to building A however it may not happen for some time.

It's tricky to get multiple mail servers writing to the same mail store (e.g. user mailboxes) at the same time. Issues of concurrent access mean that if both servers try to save a user's message at the same time, bad things can happen. That's the element that XSAN addresses - arbitrating which server has access to the files.
That said, all is not lost.
First you need to consider the duration and frequency at which building A's network goes down - are you trying to engineer a solution for something that happens rarely?
If Building A's network goes down for 5 minutes once a year then the pain and cost of failover (and fallback) may outweigh the problem. If it goes down daily for an hour, though, then that's a different problem (probably one I'd raise with the ISP in question, but that's a different issue )
Second, are building A and building B's connected directly, or do they communicate over the same internet connections?
By this I mean is Building A's internet connection goes down can the server in Building B still talk to it over some internal network, or would it try to use the broken internet link?
If they can't communicate directly then I don't see much of a solution anyway - there's no way for Server B to update the mail stores anyway.
If they can communicate directly then the simplest solution would be to setup Server B as a simple mail relay for your domain. In this way, remote mail servers send their messages to Server B (via MX records in DNS), Server B accepts the message and relays it over the internal network to Server A.
Server A is still running, and has access to the mail store, it just can't talk to the internet, but it doesn't need to in this scenario. More importantly, Server B doesn't need direct access to the mail stores - it's just passing the messages to Server A to deal with as it would normally.
None of this, though, addresses the issue of user mailboxes. For internal users it's not an issue - they can still access the POP/IMAP service on Server A, regardless of the building's internet connection. External users, however, wouldn't be able to connect since Building A's internet link is down.
Solutions to this one are harder since there's no automatic failover technology for POP or IMAP protocols (unlike MX records for SMTP). Typically this is addressed by changing your DNS to send external users to a second IP address (e.g. one on the server in Building B), and that's where the pain of failover comes in.
If your DNS TTL is set to something typical like 4 hours then it could take up to 4 hours for external clients to notice a DNS change, in which time their mail client will continue to try to connect to the server in Building A. If the network comes back up in that time then the user didn't need the failover anyway so you wasted your time in setting up the DNS failover.
Some people overcome this by setting very low TTLs on the mail server DNS records (e.g. 5 minutes). This causes the mail client to lookup the mail server address more often, so it will notice a switch faster, but at the cost of additional load on your DNS server.
There's also the question of how to change the DNS. Some people opt for an automatic switch, others prefer a manual switch (where someone goes in and changes the server address in DNS). Both have their pros and cons. Personally I prefer the manual approach since you can decide whether or not to fail over client traffic based on expectation of outage duration (if you think the network is likely to be down for only a few minutes then don't bother switching the DNS since no one's going to notice it anyway).

  • How can I convert an outlook pst file to mac mail without using a windows based computer

I recently bought the new iMac as my older Windows based computer crashed with a bad motherboard.  I have been trying to find a way to convert Outlook 2007 pst files to Mac Mail without the need to use a Windows based computer since all I have now is a Mac.  I have the copies of the pst files on my Mac, so I am looking for the most efficient way to convert them to the format that I can then open them in the Mac Mail.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi - thanks for the instructions but where do you get the option for Quicktime. If I do File - Export I only get the options for File name, place and size but no option that allows to select quicktime:-(

  • The Java plugin has created a time unfriendly issue with my e-mail account, I can not open or send any e-mail without using this plugin, how can I eliminate this problem without dropping m. firefox?

A few days ago I tried to e-mail a friend, when I started A box came up and it required me to add a plugin..Java. I contacted my e-mail courier and microsoft, they told me that is was a plugin from Mozilla Firefox. Since then I must go through Java to send or open an e-mail... this is NOT to my satisfaction, it takes too long for all of this to open and if it is not cleared , I am dropping Mozilla and going elsewhere. Why has this occurred? Is this a result of the last update? If so can I delete the last update and continue on the other version?
    == This happened ==

Sorry, I have no idea what you mean by '''"The Java plugin has created a time unfriendly issue with my e-mail account, I can not open or send any e-mail without using this plugin,"'''.
If you think your problem is caused by the Java plugin, you should visit the Java support forum for assistance.

If you could explain what you mean by '''"time unfriendly''' issue with my e-mail account", maybe we'll be able to help you solve that issue.
It might be helpful for us if we knew exactly which web-mail provider you are using. It seems strange to me that viewing or sending web-mail would actually "need" Java for operation, its more likely that some other item on the web page needs Java to run some advertising or other garbage that isn't a necessary part of the web-mail functionality you want to use.

  • How can I send a PDF via mail without it becoming an attached file?

    Hi All!
I need to know how I am able to send a PDF file via mail, without it becoming an attached file. This means when the receiver opens the mail, he automatically sees the PDF without first having to read the normal mail text and scroll down to open the attached PDF file. Just like a spam newsletter
Also I want to know - I want some illustrations in my portfolio to be a hyperlink to a website, is this possible on a picture (not on an URL) - and if so - How?
Hope you can help me out here!

Not possible with Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat.

Is there a simpel solution to this problem?

    You don't.
It's not possible. The e-mail protocol is designed for text; anything else has to go as an attachment.
Different mail clients (such as Mail.app, the mail client bundled with Mac OS X) may have different ways of handling such attachments, but they are still attachments. Each mail client has its own rules and methods, so one may display a picture as if it were in the body of the message, but another client may do something completely different.
A way of faking it is to format your message in HTML (which is a kind of text). The image is hosted on a remote server, not added to the message; instead, you include a link to it in the body of the message, as you would when building a web page. (This is also what the two tips helpfully provided by X423424X do, except that the link to the image is added in the signature, rather than the body of the message.) What exactly happens to it is, again, at the discretion of the mail client. In my case, for instance, displaying images in HTML messages is turned off, and will stay resolutely off.

  • Is there a way to import Outlook 2010 emails  to Mavericks Mail without 3rd party software?

I'm hoping that there is a fairly straight-forward way this can be done.
My friend has just purchased a MacBook Air with Mavericks operating system.  This is her first Mac and she needs to get all her old business emails onto her new MacBook.
She paid for '1 on 1' Apple support and had a session with an 'expert' yesterday - taking along her old PC laptop in the hope that he could help her.  He basically told her she should 'start a new life using Mail'.  This is not what she needed to hear.
I'm using Mail version 5.3 on my 5 year old MacBook with OS X 10.7.5.  I don't want to give her incorrect advice but my version of Mail allows one to Import mailboxes but not, unfortunately, it would seem emails from Microsoft programs for the PC.
    My question is this -
Once she has created an Outlook Data File (.pst format) is there a way she can convert this to .mbox format so that the data can be imported into Mavericks Mail without the use of third-party software?
I'm sure that she's certainly not the first person who has faced this situation but, from the attitude of the (less than helpful) Apple help person I fear that the answer may not be yes.
    Cheers

No idea, I try not to have anything to do with Outlook except provide a way out of it for the sensible. But aren't you an Outlook user?
Here's the link to the site I found -
    http://www.outlooktomail.com/buy-now-for-mac/
That should be fine, it is the same as the one in the Mac app store (which would be the preferred version to use)
My 'help' situation is a little worse than it would first seem - we're in different countries (very grateful for Viber) - her attention span for matters technological is rather short so I'm trying to make everything as painless as possible - and yes, she has backups of her backups so all should be well in that regard.
Thanks so much for your help.

    You're welcome.

  • How to send image file through mail without   any attachment

Plz tell  me how to send image file through mail without any attachment  ( i mean not converting  that image into pdf or any format )  i want to send that text or image  through mail .

    Hi Sandeep,
I think you can setup the type of email in Shared office Settings in transaction S016.
There is an option called <Preset document classes>
You choose this pushbutton to branch to the maintenance screen for the document classes that are directly displayed to users in the Business Workplace for selection when they use the Create function. The name under which the documents are displayed can also be maintained.

  • How do you delete e-mail without opening?

I just got a blackberry curve.  I want to delete an e-mail without opening it but cannot find an option to do this.  When I have the e-mail open and I hit the menu key (the one with the spots) there is an option to delete.  I would like to be able to do this without having to open the e-mail.  Can someone help me??
    Thanks!

Click the email application button where you will see a list of all your emails.
Scroll to the unopened email, but don't click on it. Click the BlackBerry button (the one with the spots).
Scroll down until you see delete. Select that, and then choose where you would like to delete the message (On mailbox & handheld or just handheld).
Good luck! Let me know if you have anymore questions.

No need to worry. OS X isn’t Windows. It won’t run any embedded code in the email.
However, if it has embedded html images, your loading the image will validate your email to spammers. You can disable that in Mail’s preferences.
Otherwise, Close the Preview Pane and select the messages, then delete.

Have you considered using BAM and BAM alerts. For this create an activity, define view and Tracking profile to monitor the ports and then create an alert when a message fails on the port.
