Redundant port on 5508 WLC
What is the purpose of Redundant Port that says "future use RJ45" on the Cisco WLC 5508?
Hi,
none.
The new WLC models are actually a common architecture with other products. (you might have noticed the similary between 2106 and the small asa)
This typically means that there was an extra rj45 ports that is maybe used by the other products having the same hardware but not on the 5508.
I.e. there is no current use or planned future use for it.

5508 WLC redundancy issue.
I am trying to set up fail-over for Cisco 5508 Wireless LAN Controller which is using 7.4 version software. I setup the redundancy port and peer redundancy.
While checking, one becomes active and other becomes standby.
Its showing everything perfectly including peer,standby-hot etc.(XMLs matched also)
I disconnect the 1st WLC uplink and then the Stand by becomes active. Fine.
Later i connected the 1st WLC link and disconnect the 2nd WLC (currently active). Here comes the issue.
Then other WLC is not becoming Active and it enters in to Maintenance mode. Means Down.
why this issue happens?
One thing i need to highlight is, one WLC is having 50 AP basce license count and other WLC having 250 AP base license count.
Is this will be an issue? Whether the License count should be same on both?
If so,how can i trim-down 250 to 50 AP base license?
Any clues? Help me!You don't have trim down the license. The license amount is going to be what you have on the primary. As far as failover the way your doing it, I don't thinkers supported that way. Only a hard failure. So you will have to manually switch the primary back.

Can I setup a 5508 pair of controllers as an HA pair if they're geographically located in different data centers? From the reading I'm doing, it looks like the redundant port needs to be physically plugged in between the two or am I miss reading?
Thanks,
PeteHi Peter,
Yes you can have 2 WLCs on different location as long as you can connect them physically by a cable to redundant port.
Normally its called 1:1 design where one WLC will be in an Active state and the second WLC will be in a Hot Standby state continuously monitoring the health of the Active WLC via a Redundant Port.
Port which should be connected back to back in order to synchronize the configuration from the Active to the Standby WLC.

N+1 5508 WLC failover test
Good day all,
I have a question about the N+1 5508 failover test:
Should I shutdown one of the primary WLC to test failover?
I just setup the N+1 bakcup WLC (5508). B
Based on: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/technology/hi_avail/N1_High_Availability_Deployment_Guide.pdf
We have two production WLCs both 5508 and one 4405.
We just purchased another HA-SKU WLC 5508.
All our four WLCs had been setup into one mobility group in version 7.4.100.6.
Their neighbors are all up.
But our test AP could not register to the Backup N+1 WLC. ( We are using option 43 in our DHCP server for all the AP boot.)
Here are the log screen:

Redundancy management IP and Redundancy port IP unreachable issue
Hi, all
I got one interesting issue with wireless 5508 controller. we have ordered two WLCs, one is air5508-12-k9, Anther one is air5508-HA-k9.
Now, we are going to form HA mode and HA box will become standby mode. One issue we are seeing now. after configuring redundancy management IP and Redundancy port IP to both WLCs. primary WLC are working well that we can ping it's all of IPs successfully, however standby WLC are not working well. even it can't ping itself. management IP has no problem.
Problem is only for redundancy management IP and redundancy Port IP. One interesting thing is our switch can't learn redundancy port's MAC address even it's connecting and interface shows UP. Primary has no this issue.
Has anyone have the same issue before or appreciate any suggestions and inputs.

Thank you so much indeed.thank you very much that makes sense, so I will need to change service port address ( maybe a class A or C ) or disconnect that port from the network ...
thank you again very much your help is really appreciated -

5508 WLC HA pair - change management interface settings
Hi,
We have a pair of 5508 WLC's in a HA configuration that is working well at the moment, however I have noticed that the management interface is configured as untagged. I would like to change this to tagged and change the attached switch to trunk for these devices but if I try and edit the management interface through the GUI the VLAN and IP address section is greyed out and cannot be changed. While I could attempt it through the CLI and am comfortable doing that, the fact that it cannot be changed through the GUI implies that this should not be changed and so I am after further information. I don't have any lab equipment other than the HA pair in production so I cannot try changing it through the CLI at the moment.
The WLC's are in LAG mode if that makes any difference. I realise there may be downtime required for making this change but I am trying to work out the steps to get this done without having to drastically reconfigure things.
Any assistance would be appreciated.Introduction of New Interfaces for HA Interaction
Redundancy Management Interface
The IP address on this interface should be configured in the same subnet as the management interface. This interface will check the health of the Active WLC via network infrastructure once the Active WLC does not respond to Keepalive messages on the Redundant Port. This provides an additional health check of the network and Active WLC, and confirms if switchover should or should not be executed. Also, the Standby WLC uses this interface in order to source ICMP ping packets to check gateway reachability. This interface is also used in order to send notifications from the Active WLC to the Standby WLC in the event of Box failure or Manual Reset. The Standby WLC will use this interface in order to communicate to Syslog, the NTP server, and the TFTP server for any configuration upload.
Redundancy Port
This interface has a very important role in the new HA architecture. Bulk configuration during boot up and incremental configuration are synced from the Active WLC to the Standby WLC using the Redundant Port. WLCs in a HA setup will use this port to perform HA role negotiation. The Redundancy Port is also used in order to check peer reachability sending UDP keep-alive messages every 100 msec (default timer) from the Standby WLC to the Active WLC. Also, in the event of a box failure, the Active WLC will send notification to the Standby WLC via the Redundant Port. If the NTP server is not configured, a manual time sync is performed from the Active WLC to the Standby WLC on the Redundant Port. This port in case of standalone controller and redundancy VLAN in case of WISM-2 will be assigned an auto generated IP Address where last 2 octets are picked from the last 2 octets of Redundancy Management Interface (the first 2 octets are always 169.254). -
Can't get 1532i to associate to 5508 WLC running 7.6.130.0
Greetings,
I've got 20 or so APs on a 5508 WLC. Most of the APs are 1242, one is 3602. I'm now trying to get a 1532i to associate to the 5508 and it's not happening. This is the first 1532 on this controller.
Also, I got this 1532 AP from a sister site and they had it configured as Autonomous in wgb mode, so I had to do the Autonomous to Unified Conversion. This conversion appeared to go successfully. But now the AP won't associate to my controller.
Thanks
Following is what happens from the AP's console :

5508 wlc with 1140 APs and NPS cant connect
Hi.. let me go off with the equipment setup that I have first..
I have 3 sites each site has 2x 5508 WLC and a few 1140 AP's per site.
I also have 3 NPS running on those 3 sites..
I have NPS and dhcp running on the same server...
I have a seperate CA root Authority server.
3 seperate DC ... one per site..
I followed everything accoriding to this guide
http://araihan.wordpress.com/2010/04/30/complete-guide-to-build-a-cisco-wireless-infrastructure-using-cisco-wlc-5500-cisco-1142-ap-and-microsoft-radius-server/
and also the guide that is on the CISCO site
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps10315/products_configuration_example09186a0080bfb19a.shtml
I did a debug on the wlc for the wireless client that I was using to try and connect.. I get the following I hope someone can help me figure out whats wrong.

I am trying to keep everything simple and geting working first.. after doing this.. looks like the message from event view is success I got 2 events int he log.. 1. Network policy server granded access to a user. 2.Network Policy server granted full acess to a user because of the host met the defined health policy.
both sucess...
I am not getting a DHCP address... for some reason ... here is the log... from the debug.. hopefully someone can help me figure this out.. Thanks again for helping and posting your comments.

5508 WLC-6500 Series Switch Etherchannel
Hi,
I have a 5508 controller connected to a 6500 VSS pair. Below is the port channel configuration and port configuration. I am just wondering whether we still have to configure a load balancing method as cisco recommends “port-channel load-balance src-dst-ip” as best practice.
Does this still applicable for 5508 controller-6500 Series uplink as the etherchannel is L2 etherchannel?

Hi everbody,
I am very interested in the new 7.3 feature HA.
Also I can read that it is recommended to connect the two WLCs directly.
Has anyone tried to use a L2-VLAN between them, in fact to bridge a distance between two data centres?
Thank you for your answers.
Regards
StephenHello,
As per my understanding direct connectivity of Redundant Port is required for HA.
for more details you can visit the below link:

Connection between 5508 WLC and 3750-24PS switch
I have to realize a connection between an 5508 WLC and 3750 switch using one SFP cable. I found on Cisco documentation some reference about two different SFP cables.
The first one is CAB-SFP-50CM, but this is used to interconnect two 3560 switches.
The second is SFP-H10GB-CU1M. This one has SFP+ transceivers on both ends which I don’t know if are compatible with the standard SFP ports that can be found both on WLC and switch.
My question is if I can use one of these cables in order to connect my devices, or if you know other one piece SFP cables.
Many thanksI know that you can use those SFP transceivers, but I want to know if someone tried to use the SFP-H10GB cables for this kind of connection. Because I saw on another vendor website that the SFP+ cables are compatible with standard SFP ports, and I wanted to see if it is the same for Cisco cables too.

Can't put two 5508 WLCs in the same RF group
Hi experts,
I have two 5508 WLCs and I want them to be backup to each other. I put in the same "RF Group Name" and even the same "Default Mobility Domain Name" however under Wireless -> 802.11b/g/n -> RRM -> RF Grouping each controller still only have themselves as the only memter to the group.
Two controllers are having management IPs on the same subnet 192.168.161.x/24. AP-manager interfaces are in the same network as well. They can ping each other fine. The following screen shots show the current relavent config on the controller:
I do have two controllers in the same mobility group and they are both showing up...
Does anyone know why they can't add each other to the RF group? All other settings are pretty much default...
Thanks!Hi,
is there a chance that one of the 2 WLC doesn't contain any access point ? Or that the APs from one WLC are not physically close to the APs of the second WLC ?
The point of RF grouping is to exchange RF information, to make RRM decisions together and to know what ap is a rogue and which is not. RF group information travels over the air from AP to AP.
So if a wlc has no ap of if its APs are not close to those of the other WLC there is both no point in grouping with the other WLC in rf group and also no technical way of doing so.
Regards,
Nicolas

Clients unable to connect and get DHCP - LAP1142N AP and 5508 WLC
Hi,
I have 19 locations, each with 1 or more LAP1142N AP's in FlexConnect mode, AP's are primed using CAPWAP to my 5508 WLC at the datacenter. The AP's join the WLC without issue every time. I have two WLAN's, one guest and one staff, the guest network is open and obtains DHCP from a WatchGuard XTM33 firewall at each of the remote locations. The staff side is WPA2/RADIUS and DHCP is assigned from the WLC. Each AP is assigned a static IP that is not in the DHCP scope. For example: DHCP scope on the branch firewall is 192.168.1.10-250 the AP will be assigned static IP of 192.168.1.1.. The AP's are connected to a HP procurve switch that has a untagged VLAN, the firewall is using the native vlan 1 and so is the AP.
I have been running this network for over a year and it has not had a single issue until the last two weeks. Nothing on the network has changed or has been upgraded.
Now for the issue: The issue I am seeing is that clients are no longer able to connect to the AP and do not get DHCP assigned to them. I am able to get it working, if I remove the static IP from the AP, the AP will reboot, join the controller, then begin working, users can connect and DHCP is assigned from the firewall as it should. However, If the AP then reboots, the AP will join back to the controller but no clients can connect nor do they get a DHCP address. So, I then reassign a static IP to the AP again and it reboots, connects to the controller and clients then can connect and get DHCP.
Attached is a running config from one of the APs
I've found several posts on this topic, in fact the patch of unassigning or reassigning static IP is one that I found. However, I wanted to post this to see if there is any further assistance I can get on this. I am also waiting on my SmartNet to start up and will be contacting Cisco support as well.
Thanks for any help.Alright, so I finally figured out the issue with this. I had a Mobility Anchor set on the guest WLAN and once I removed that all started working again.
What is Mobility Anchor?
A. Mobility Anchor, also referred to as Guest tunneling or Auto Anchor Mobility, is a feature where all the client traffic that belongs to a WLAN (Specially Guest WLAN) is tunneled to a predefined WLC or set of controllers that are configured as Anchor for that specific WLAN. This feature helps to restrict clients to a specific subnet and have more control over the user traffic. Refer to the Configuring Auto-Anchor Mobility section of Cisco Wireless LAN Controller Configuration Guide, Release 7.0 for more information on this feature. -
AIR-CAP3702I booting up in mesh mode and not joining our 5508 WLC
I have a batch of 30+ AIR-CAP3702I-A-K9 APs that I need to setup but none of them are joining to the 5508 WLC and when I connect a console cable and view the output from the AP it shows that it is trying to initiate in mesh mode. I have read other forums that are showing that I need to put in the APs MAC address to a filter list on the WLC for it to show up and then I will be able to change it from mesh mode to local mode. The only issue I'm having with that solution is not knowing how it will affect my current production environment off of that 5508 WLC. I have 69 active production APs with clients working off them and there are no MAC filters currently in place on the WLC. By adding a MAC filter entry for the new APs would the WLC create an implicit deny for all other clients that don't have their MAC addresses entered?? If so is there another work around? Can the mode be changed via the CLI on the AP itself to make it local instead of mesh?
