Reduplication of photos on C: drive -- WHY?!?!

I just upgraded from PSE 6 to 9.  The installation went well on my data drive (E:), and the photos remained in a folder of my specification on the E: drive.
However, I've just found that PSE has REDUPLICATED ALL THOSE files on my C: drive under C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Elements Organizer\Catalogs.  It's taking up a whopping TEN GB on my C: drive.  The C: drive is a small SSD that's large enough for my OS but not a lot more.  This ridiculous duplication of data onto my C: drive has used up almost all the free space on the operating-system drive, so I'm getting warnings about low disk space there.  What's worse is that it duplicated all the files twice now -- about 4 GB that must be from PSE 6 and another 5GB that must be from PSE 9.  Almost all the same data is in both folders, and it's simply a duplication of the files that are already in the correctly-specified place on the data drive.
Why in the world would PSE write all this data twice, let alone three times???
Is there any way to get rid of all that crap on my C: drive without ditching PSE altogether???
Thanks for any suggestions.
Ron

You can delete the duplicates.
In organizer click on the display button and change to Folder Location View.
Expand the left hand tree and find the C drive folder with your images.
Click on that folder and press ctrl+A to select all the images
Hit the delete button and when prompted check the box requesting deletion from the hard drive as well as the catalog.
Click OK

  • IMac doesn't recognize photos on a cd - why?

I was recently sent a CD-R of some photos of a family reunion. I had no trouble opening this cd and copying the photos onto my old windows vista laptop (and from there, via thumbstick, onto my iMac, so it is not as if the format of the pictures can be the problem). However my mid 2010 iMac (running 10.7.5) recognizes the disc, but shows the folder containing the photos as empty. Why might this be?

It's not the format of the pictures, but most likely the format of the disc.
The disc itself is probably formatted so it can only be read on Windows. The thumb drive on the other hand was formatted for Mac and Windows so you could write to it from the CD (in the Windows computer) and read from it on the Mac.

The RAW files I just downloaded on new MacBook Pro are designated as JPEG in the photo info box. Why??

How did you download? Have you been using the Import panel?
How is the pop-up selector for the "Raw+Jpeg" set?
If you are importing raw+jpeg pairs, and you set this to (Use Jpeg as original), then you will see a little J on the thumbnail, otherwise a R.
Or did ou import with Jpeg only?

I venture to say the recipient is a Windoze user and if so, state of the art Windoze ignores or doesn't recognize photo orientation data that is included with a photo's EXIF data.

  • I photo and external drive

how do i save photos to external drive and possibly set it up that all photos go to external drive so i can save room on my hard drive

    Hello Myron,
It can be very handy to store your iPhoto library (and your iTunes library for that matter) on an external drive. Make sure the drive is formated for Mac (MacOSExtended) rather than for Windows (MS-DOS, etc.). Storing Mac data on a windows formated drive reduces performance and can damage data over time.
Apple documents moving the library to other locations on their website: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iPhoto/7.0/en/6331.html
You can check to make sure your drive is formated correctly and re-format if needed following another knowledge base article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306143
Please be aware that if you do have to reformat the drive it will ERASE any information currently on the drive.
    Cheers!

  • Syncing photos from network drive

all my photos are stored on a network drive and itunes successfully syncs all photos from this drive to my iphone. however, the next time i turn on my computer and re-sync, i see from the photos tab that the location of my photos has been changed to the iphotos library, which i don't use.
this may be happening because i run itunes so soon after booting that the computer hasn't had the chance to find the network drive yet. and that's fine. but if i re-select the source of photos to the same network drive, itunes insists that it is a different library than on my iphone and wants to sync all the photos from scratch.
is there a way to indicate that this is the same source and not a new source?

Same results here... I have an Infrant ReadyNAS RAID file server that I bought to be my 'master' vault for all my data. My computers don't store any important data locally. Their "My Documents" shortcuts point to the fileserver.
When I tried to sync Apple TV to the My Pictures folder, iTunes would think for a few seconds and then give me the little exclaimation mark inside the triangle instead of the synching icon, and would go no further.
I was occasioanlly able to sync very small picture subfolders from under "My Pictures", but that was it.
Since I don't plan on moving the master copies of my photos off of the fileserver, I am just going to use a batch file to periodically mirror the x:\mypictures folder to c:\appletvsuckspicturemirror. Then I'll just set up Apple TC to go get the photos there instead.
    robocopy "x:\my_documents\mypictures" c:\appletvsuckspicturemirror /e
I use robocopy for lots of other stuff because it only copies new or modified files (it's a free microsoft utility)

  • Plan to move photos from one drive to another - Need advice

My C: drive is almost out of space. I want to move my photos to a new internal hard drive.
In PSA SE 3, I've already tagged these photos. I want to know what's the easiest way to move my photos from one drive to another without losing my tags. Will "Reconnect Missing Files" find the moved files on a new drive if I keep my path the same (except for the drive letter)? Or will I have to reconnect the files manually one-at-a-time?
    Any advice is appreciated!

I might. I think I have MySQL installed at home. I have MS SQL Server at work. Is the application data file Access-compatible? I'd love to be able to just hack the underlying data store.

  • Unable to access photos on external drive

I have Aperture 2.1.3 and I have been using Photo Mechanic to quickly import, edit, and save my photos to one of my external drives. I have been using Aperture to adjust some of these images by importing them into Aperture but the stored files have remained on the external drive. Suddenly, when I try to import the photos from external drive for Aperture manipulation the photos are not available for import. But the photos are viable on my external drive, and If I use Photoshop or Photo Mechanic, I CAN access and import these same files .
I hope this makes sense! I need advise!
    thanks to all!

.plist is the preference file. Go to your User/Library/Preferences and take com.apple.Aperture.plist (the preferences are in alphabetical order) and put the file on your desktop. Then restart Aperture. Aperture will return to its default settings and there will be a new preference file in the Library/Preferences folder.
If this clears your problem, then your old plist file was corrupt and you should put it in the trash and rebuild your own preferences.
If you still have the problem after restarting Aperture, then it's not the plist file, and you can trash the new plist and restore your old one from the Desktop back into the Library/Preferences folder.
Have you tried to reboot the machine. Sometimes things go wrong in the connection with an external drive and rebooting the machine clears the problem. You could also reset the PRAM (on boot, hold down Command-Option-P-R and wait for the second chime). Sometimes the PRAM gets corrupted and this affects the relationship with external drives.
You could also import the RAW files into Aperture, instead of using them as referenced files.

  • Moving photos to new drive in Elements

Want to move photos to new drive in Elements 8.  Have purchased 11 and want to move the photos  before I  install Elements 11.  What is the best way to go about this.  Couldn't find anything new on the forum.  I asked this question  in 2010 and that's the same answer I found today.  Anything new?

You basically select thumbnails in the Organizer and then click:
    File >> Move
Then browse to your new location.
It cam be quite slow if you have a large catalog so it may be best to try selecting smaller batches.

I have 1200 pics on camera roll and 900 on photo stream. 1. why are they different? 2. if all are supposedly backed up on iCloud if I delete all photos on my phone will they still be on iCloud or do I need to separately download them to my pc first?

Photos are only uploaded to iCloud after photo stream is enabled.  It's possible that you already had 300 photos in your camera roll when you turn it on so they weren't uploaded.  Also, photo stream also only maintains photos for 30 days, although earlier photos already streamed to your device from photo stream are not deleted.  If you had turned photo stream off, then back on, and the 300 photos fell outside of this 30-day window at the time, they would not be in your photo stream album.  (FYI, photo stream will also only save the last 1000 photos.)
If you delete the photos on your phone from the camera roll album, photo stream will be not be effected.  If you delete them from the photo stream album on your phone, they will be deleted from your photo stream on your phone and any other devices connected to the same iCloud account/photo stream.
To keep your camera roll photos permanently, don't rely on photo stream as a backup.  Import them to your computer (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083).

  • Cloud icon showing up but song is on my hard drive, why ?

I have iTunes12 running on an iMac.
I have several songs in my library that are displayed with a cloud icon next to them when in fact they are located only hard drive - why ?
This was discovered when i was trying to drag-and-drop some songs from my library onto an iPod - when i tried, a message popped up and said the song was only available in iCloud and that I must download it before I can copy it to my iPod !?!?!
    2 questions :
[1] The song already exists locally on my hard drive - how do i correct this ?
[2] To correct the issue for my entire library, is there a way to "re-index" my current hard-drive iTunes library to get rid of this issue for all the songs that have clouds next to them ?
    Thx,
    BobZ

    Hello BobZ_annapolis,
It sounds like you have verified that these files exist currently on your HDD, but in iTunes they still prompt to download them. From what you describe it sounds like iTunes may be opening a blank library, rather than a folder with your library in it. You can use these steps to point your iTunes library to the folder with your media in it with this article:
iTunes: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
