Reel name increments   Help!

I am using fcp 5.14. I am capturing betacam sp from a sony deck. When I do a capture now and play the tape, when I am done FCP puts a differnt letter at the end of the tape name. This makes it impossible to batch re-capture a tape. What is wrong? I have it set to start a new clip on a timecode break and each new clip has a differnt taoe name when done.
thanks for any help
kevin

FCP is doing this because you are using it to capture over sections of the tape that have timecode breaks. When FCP creates new clips on timecode breaks, it automatcally increments the reel names, in case the timecode starts over.
IF (an important if) if the timecode on the tape is ascending, even if not continuous, meaning that at no point it starts over at zero, such that there are not multiple regions on one tape that could have the same timecode, you can modify the reel names/numbers of the clips in the browser. This does make a permanent change to the QT metadata on any clips that have been captured, but it's a pretty safe change. Once you have done this you'll see only one reel for that tape in the batch capture list. Just make sure you have enough space around the TC breaks to allow for pre-roll and any handles you are adding at capture...
Hope this helps -

• PP7.1.0. XML Export missing REEL names - help!

Problem with FCP XML export from Premiere Pro 7.1.0
It's screwed up my worflow for editing Premiere from Proxies created in resolve.
All worked fine in PP CS6
Workflow
1. In Resolve: Create Quicktime Proxies from DNGS created with Raw Magic via 5DIII
2. Import my proxies into Premiere CS6. Each Proxy comes in with the correct 'Tape Name' that matches the Reel name of the Clip in Resolve
3. Edit in premiere
4. FCP EXPORT .XML >>
5. Opens perfectly in Resolve. The editng Proxies arere-linked to the RAW DNGS inside resolve, using the <REEL>names (you can see them inside the attached XML).  All is good.
But with Premiere CC 7.1.0
Opening XML in resolve gives me 'Failed to Link Because timecode extends do not match'
world of pain - I can't manually relink 100's of DNG in resolve.
Examning the xmls - Premiere CC 7.1.0 seems to have stopped exporting <REEL>
Could anyone please test/confirm with Premiere CC 7.1.0 & Resolve 10
I have attached the 'good' and 'bad'  XML's. [see link]
Anyone having similar problems???
How can I downgrade to PP CC 7?
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/401700/FCP%20EXPORT%20PROBLEMS%20-%20MISSING%20REEL%20 NAMES/FCP%20EXPORT%20Missing%20Reel%20Names%20with%20PP%207.10..zip

Has anyone found out a workaround for this?  We're just about to head into 3 back to back projects!
We're still getting issues when trying to relink original Cinema DNGs from the proxies coming from an XML out of Premiere CC 7.2.1
I can manually link them from the media pool, but have to do each clip in the timeline individually!
Apart from re-exporting the Cinema DNGs as ProRes 422 HQs and linking these to the Premiere timeline (which king of defeats the object of recording RAW), does anyone know any work arounds?
I take it this is still an issue with Premiere not exporting Reel / Tape names in the XML.
EDLs do not work for us either.

• Write 'file name' as 'reel name' - plugin ?

Hi.
For quite some time I wrote a post on printing filenames beside the timecode, which was not possible in any ways.
But someone pointed out a plugin which displays the reel name instead.
Now I wonder if there is any way, where I could get the filenames (clips on HD) as reel names during import, or afterwards with some plugin or so.
Any tips ?
Thanks
Jan
ps: I've inluded some of the previous posts :
"Hi all
Does anyone know a way to print/display or window burn (like the frame counter generator) the filename, that is, the name of the source clip on the video screen, for export aswel. Is there any plug-in available for this, because I couldn't find any way in final cut itself. As an alternative, a possibility to do the same in quicktime itself would help me a bit aswel.
Thanks for helping out.
Jan"
"check this one out ... might be what you need:
http://www.1z1.at/plugins/#displaysourcetc "

Oh.. sorry bout that.
I need this automated of course, handling several thousand quicktime clips doesn't allow for too many manual actions.
So to round up things, I need to be able to print the filename of quicktime clips (on my hard disk) with TC reader along. As everyone says it is not possible, there might be a way around it, with this plugin above, at least if I find a way to get the filename to be shown as reel name, in the clips properties so to speak.
"reel : scnene026.mov"
Thanks

• Reel Name Renames Itself

Hello,
I am currently working in Final Cut 5. One of my iMacs that I use for digitizing renames the Reel Name according to what the last tape name was that was captured to that project. (If I changed out drives it follows the name of the last tape digitized to the project that I open) Here is an example: 7 tapes were captured to a drive and starting with the lable RRC 001 and ending with RRC 006. (This digitizing was done on a diffferent computer, which I don't have a problem with. ) I now have some new tapes to captured with the first one needing the reel name "RRC BRoll 4A", I name the reel in my capture window, capture the tape and Final Cut relables the tape as "RRC 7". It is also labled this in the capture scratch. What setting is set in Final Cut to rename my reel name?
Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the help! Sometimes you just think too hard and the basic answer is just to trash your preferences. :-P Thanks again!!

• Unique Reel Name/Number

Are unique reel names/numbers only important within a project or is it also important/recommended/good practice to have unique reel names across all projects?

HIGHLY recommended for each and every project that you do. If you lose the footage due to accidental deletion or the media drive dies, then you will need to recapture that footage. If you don't have unique reel names, then you won't know which tape to grab. It is equally important to mark those tapes with those names.
And you need to give unique names too...ESPECIALLY if you have several projects. You might find that with the several projects you will have multiple UNTITLED-1, UNTITLED-2 clips and if you ever needed to RECONNECT your media...HOSED!
If I might pimp myself here a little I think it would be a wise investment to buy my GETTING ORGANIZED WITH FCP DVD. I explain how to be organized and why you need to be organized with your projects. Not only for technical reasons, but creative ones. A well organized project helps you find footage much quicker and therefor you can edit faster and spend less time digging for that shot that you KNOW you just saw...

I have copied many photo's from another laptop to my Mac.  The older photo's are in directories with names that help me select what I need to view. I would like to have all my imported new photo's also bee added to the directory structure I have in Finder but my new photo's are all in iPhoto.  I want to use directories for storing and iPhoto for viewing.  Is this possible or do I need to have all my photo's in iPhoto??
Mitch

iPhoto is not a Photo Viewer. It's a Photo Manager and designed for looking after the files while you organise the Photos. It really works much better if you let it manage those files. If you use iPhoto you never go near those files because iPhoto is your start point for anything you want to do with your Photos - the point of the pplication.
You can run iPhoto in Referenced mode, where it does not copy the files to the Library, but I caution you that you are making life a lot more difficult for yourself by doing that.
How to, and some comments on why you shouldn't, are in this thread

• Is it possible to add tape name/reel name/disk label/etc on more than one clip at a time?

Just coming to grips with some potential media management nightmares and want to find out whether I'm just missing something in the literature. Using  Adobe Premiere Pro CC is there any way to modify tape name/reel name/disk label/card number? In both Final Cut Pro and Avid this is pretty straight forward and you can do this on multiple clips, or one at a time. However, I've not seen an easy way of doing this in Premiere.
To be honest, I haven't seen any way of identifying roll/card name within Premiere. It may not be part of everyone's workflow, but it is a rather crucial step for ours, and we're not able to do this at the moment which is pretty frustrating.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  I suppose if we've got to do them one at a time it'll be a nice, quiet afternoon hitting copy and paste for someone!
Thanks in advance.
Amy

so strange premiere cant read/import other metadata, after they tout they ready for the big time...   you can enter multiple values for some metadata fields, such as tape name. if you highlight multiple clips in the project bin and have metadata panel open, you can then type in your comments/data in the metadata panel, and it will write it to all the highlighted clips. you can also right click the columns in the project bin panel to choose which metadata fields you want, create new metadata fields, and save the setup for other projects...

• Adding reel name to TCR results in a long render

I spent a little time yesterday trying to tweak the Timecode Reader FXScript that comes with Final Cut 6 to add the reel name to the burn-in.
It seems like this should be a simple thing, since there's apparently an FXScript function for just that purpose (GetReelName). But merely adding a call to GetReelName in my FXScript and applying it to a clip in my timeline results in an orange "unlimited RT" bar, and a long and incredibly annoying render on output.
The source clip is HDV 1080p24, and the timeline is ProRes 422 at 1920x1080, same frame rate.
Is this something y'all have seen before? I'm aware that there are a few plugins out there that will do a burn-in of timecode plus reel name and even other information, but what I want most is one that will work in real time like the built-in TCR does.

Unfortunately, how a plugin/generator gets classified as RT is a result of in-house testing at Apple and no user defined plugins/generators qualify -

• Using log and transfer,  how do I change the source reel name?

I am importing/transfering native camera footage from folders on a disk that have the same card numbers, FCP is assigning the card number as the source reel.  Is it a problem if there are 2 source reels named the same?  ie card 1?
If so how do I change the name of the reel for  footage already transferred and how do I assign a new reel name before transfer?
Thanks!

Chacos wrote:

In the FCP Browser, switch to list view, then scroll the browser to see the Reel Column. You can enter the reel number there by clicking where the reel number would be and entering it. After you have done one, copy that reel text, and then  select multiple clips and paste the reel number into them simultaneously.

• Changing the Reel Name after capture

It appears that you can change a clip's assigned Reel Name by editing the clip's Reel attribute in the FCE browser. (If you change the Reel attribute value, you get a warning that it will modify the file on disk.)
Is there any other way (or utility) to view or edit a clip's assigned Reel name other than via the FCE Browser? I have not found any way to do it in QT Player, QT Pro, GetInfo or any other means.

Not that I know of. Maybe CatDV or something like that.

• Changing Reel Name

Hi,
I'm creating a video archive with the footage we've recently acquired, and have a question about changing the reel name in the logging info window. I want to change the reel name to correspond to the new tape label numbers I've created for the archive, but when I try to change the reel name FCP tells me that this will change the timecode info and the file itself. Is it best to not mess with the reel name and instead mark my tape numbers in another field like comments?
Thanks,
matt

well originally I hadn't labeled the tapes in FCP while capturing at all because the tapes themselves weren't physically labeled. I decided to go back and label and organize them and now have to go back and update the info in FCP. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't messing with the media at all by changing the reel names.
Thanks,
matt

• Disappearing reel name and timecode

Ok, here's one for you:
batch capture from a list that has proper reel names and media start and end timecodes. Capture complete and the reel name disappears to be replaced with a blank space, and the timecode is set to zeros. Hmmm, the clip is there, plays fine, etc. But I lost all my references. This is also happening if I create a brand new event to capture live on the system by marking in and out points and then capturing.
N.B. -This list was imported from an excel file using a tab-delimited format. These are additions to a project I'm working on to rebuild an older project for recutting. I've been recapturing using GVG EDLs without issue. Then here's this little hand made list and the reel names and TCs vanish on me. Weird.
source is HDcam being captured in ProRes via HDSDI through a Kona3 card.
-the same tapes captured fine a couple weeks ago
-no system changes/updates other than a Camera Raw update
-Preferences for FCP have been trashed
-8 core MacPro running 10.6.4

Here you go, I think this is a pretty good fit:
http://web.mac.com/piero.fiorani/iWeb/PieroF%20FCE%20Effect/FCE%20Timecode%20Dis play.html
It does work fine in FCP. Place it on one clip, copy the clip, select all the other clips, and paste attributes (filters).

• Change multiple Reel names

Is it possible to change multiple reel names at the same time, instead of having to copy/paste each one individually? I'm on FCP 6

I don't remember if this is the same in FCP 6, but it seems like I've been doing this for years -
Select one clip that you want to assign a new reel number to:
and give it a reel number:
then select the rest of your clips by Shift Clicking on each one, or drag across the group. then Control Click in the Reel name column and the name you previously assigned will appear as an option to select.
Select it:
And that reel will be assigned to the other clips that were selected:

• Reel Name on Capture

I now realize I have a bunch of untitled clips. When I do Command 8 and get the Capture Window, I see on the right a place to insert Reel Name, Capture location, etc. But it won't let me type anything into these boxes. How can I do that, to stop the growing mass of untitled, etcs? I use FCE 4.0, capturing from a Sony VX2000 using Capture Now.

In the future don't use Capture Now.
