Reference a PDF

I'm kinda new at pages and i have a project i'm working on for work. here's my issue or at least i think it's an issue. My pages project will be exported as a PDF file and i'm trying to reference another PDF file that is 31 pages long, it's some term and conditions from work, all this will be a on a CD for our customers, can i point to the 31 page PDF file in a folder, not sure how to do this. If that can't be done, i understand the bookmark feature in pages, the whole project eventually will be about 100 pages long, if i just have everything in one PDF file and bookmark to the term and conditions, which right now is how i got it built, when the bookmark goes to that section of the PDF and the customer wants to print off the terms and conditions, how will i set it up so the 100 pages won't print just the 31 pages of terms and conditions do. thanks,, Charles

Charles
I hope you wrote the project clearer than that!
As I understand it:
a You have a 100 page Project to be saved as a .pdf
b You have a 31 page Terms & Conditions, held where?
c You want to Link (not bookmark) to the T&C
d You want the user to be able to print the T&C and your project separately
Answers
1. As I have said this is not a bookmark, which is for internal links in your document.
2. You can not link directly in Pages to a pdf file unless it has a URL and is stored on a website
3. You can edit the project pdf in *Adobe Acrobat Pro* to create the link to the T&C in a fixed location, say in the same folder or a sub folder. It will even allow you to choose which page in the 2nd document to link to.
4. *Preview .app* in Snow Leopard may be able to do this now, there have been some improvements in SL, but I am not running it to test this.
5. As the T&C are a separate document, the User will never be in the position where more than the current document, the T&C in this case, is offered for print. I am sure that most users can pick how much to print anyway.

  • Opening an FDF that references a PDF in Firefox and Safari

Our ASP.NET application serves up fdf and the associated pdf files from an underlying database.
We use Fdfacx to generate the FDF with a reference (set using FDFSetFile) to a PDF.
Both FDF and PDF URLs have parameters.
When we use IE7, all works fine, but in Firefox 2 & 3 and Safari (all on windows), the FDF is loaded, but the PDF is not requested from the server.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

  • Publishing Framemaker with PDF page reference

I have a Framemaker book that I'm trying to publish.  The documents in the book has references to PDF files and the pages that should be inbeded into the document (e.g. Reference File: ZZ6701G04.pdf #4).  When I print with framemake or save as PDF, everything works fine, however when I try to publish to HTML5 or ePub, each of the pdf references turns into the 2nd page of the PDF.   So I end up with the same pdf page image for each reference throughout the published document.

So you've got references to bookmarks within the PDF docs, right? Are you linking or importing your FM content into RH? Experiment with doing it the other way (depending on how it's done now) - sometimes things work differently depending on whether you link or import. Next check out your help output type - try generating WebHelp instead of the ones you're doing - maybe refs to bookmarks within PDFs don't work in the SSLs you've tried.

  • Open link (PDF) in new window from WebHelp custom skin button

This question relates to my work with FM>RH integration. But the task I'm trying to accomplish is something specifically done in RH with customization of WebHelp skins, so I'm posting in this forum. I'm running RH9 on Windows XP Pro.
We have recently replaced WebWorks with RH and finally have the mapping files set up to generate Help from our FM source files. Celebration was short, because then we realized that our users wanted a PDF option. We haven't done any mapping to create PDFs from RH, and that seems kind of silly anyway, since we have superior PDF generation from the FM files.
So I set about making a custom button in the header of a WebHelp skin that will link to a PDF. I accomplshed that work, but its behavior falls short of the functionality I'd like to see. Currently, you click on the button and it opens the PDF in the browser window of the Help system. I want it to open in a new window, so I can keep the experience clean for the users, separating Help and PDF. I don't know if this is possible.
Here is where I am at. To create button I navigated to:
    Project Set-up/Skins/NEW SKIN/WebHelp Skin Editor/ Main/NEW BUTTON
When I choose the edit icon to customize the new button, there is an option to choose Link or JavaScript. I got the PDF to open inside the Help browser by just using the Link option and specifying the PDF. I have tried to use the JavaScript option without success. My JS may be wrong, but when I choose inline JS option and place anything there, it turns all the navigation buttons to gobbledy ****. Specifying an external JS file doesn't work at all.
Any direction or help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Douglas

I see one other shortcoming with this solution now that I've implemented it. Our Help follows the applictions through a convoluted path of development servers, amongst other strangeness with the way we deploy Help and PDF documentation. My concern is referencing a single URL/file on a server. Since we're moving things around, that doesn't really work well, we want the PDF to be with the Help system, if possible. Is there a way to reference the PDF as a relative link in the baggage files, so it will pull it from whatever server the Help system resides on without having to make changes?
    UPDATE:
It seems if you place the PDF in the WebHelp folder and reference it as the JavaScript, the Help system automatically reats it as root folder and find it there. So, I think this is the solution to my question? However, this is a bit annoying, as it means you have to remember to manually place the file in the compiled Help system. I had earlier experimented with placing the PDF as a baggage file, but those don't seem to carry over when you compile Help. Is there any way to put the PDF in the Baggage Files and designate that it be included in compiled Help?

  • Creation of Note in PDF file generated from Output Server

I would like to be able to force Output Server to create a Note (in expanded format) on a PDF file. I see the bookmark information in the manual, however I was not able to locate any documentation referencing the note tool. Is this possible? If so, can someone provide a brief example of a command that would need to be passed through the data stream to generate a note on a PDF document?

Unfortunately, Output Server doesn't allow you to create PDF comments. The best you could probably do is generate a PDF and then create an XFDF that references that PDF and also contains your comments. Check the Adobe PDF Developer's site for information on XFDF.

  • PDF created using Java iText package - Text not editable and not displaying font properties on Acrobat

    Hi,
I have an issue in editing the text and viewing the font properties of a text region on a PDF created using Java iText package.
I use Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro Extended and the option Tools -> Advanced Editing -> TouchUp Text Tool.
The strange behaviour is that, I have 2 PDFs created out of the same base PDF and text added via Java iText package with the same Text, Font and other properties.
One of the PDF has the text region editable on Acrobat but the other one has the text region which is not editable.
But both the PDFs are editable via Adobe Illustrator.
I have attached both the PDFs for your reference
    PDF_Editable.pdf - Editable on Acrobat
    PDF_Not Editable.pdf - Not Editable on Acrobat
Any help or insight to find out the difference/issue with the PDF which is not editable via Acrobat would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

You don't have direct control of the leading of a multiline text field. A common approach is to control the background color of the field with JavaScript since the lines are not really needed when the field is used in Reader/Acrobat. They may be useful when using the form by hand. For more information, see the posts by Max in this topic: http://acrobatusers.com/forum/forms-acrobat/how-do-i-use-multi-lined-text-fields-over-prin ted-line-area-existing-form

  • PDF Portfolio Toolbar Default / List View / Acrobat 9 Pro

Is there any way to have Portfolio Default to the list view?  Thanks, John

The file I am working with is a .doc file. It gets changed to a prn file when I execute the Macro I currently have defined - in an attempt to save it is C:\temp\temp.pdf.  The resulting file gets named C:\temp\temp.pd, but it is in actuality a prn file - can't be opened by Adobe Acrobat.  The suggestion above of subsequently passingthe prn file off to a Distiller directory to generate a pdf probably will not work because of timing issues. Here's some more background on why and what I am trying to do:
This activity is happening in a program running in a batch mode.  This program is using OLE to open Word documents, add watersmarks and other details, then save the changed Word doc as a pdf to c:\temp\temp.pdf.  The program then, expecting the temp file to be where it is, sends temp.pdf to a Document Management System, changing the name in the process to something more meaningful.  Additionally, in some cases, an additional Word doc is created on the fly which must also be saved as C:\temp\temp.pdf and is immediately thereafter procesed in a similar way - sent to a Document Management System.
The above work just fine when we used Acrobat 5.0 with PDF Writer 5.0.  The fact that PDF Writer would always write its output to C:\temp\temp.pdf (as an actual PDF file) was controlled through a registry setting (PDFFileName).  WIth Acrobat 9 Pro, this registry setting no longer works as it did in 5.0.  The switch to Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro is necessitated by the need to process documents with Chinese characters.  I've seen some references to PDF Maker and perhaps this is a product that needs to be added to this process, but I can't find complete information on this product.

  • PDF Portfolio on Flash ActiveX

Is there any way to open PDF Portfolio's SWF file in Flash ActiveX (Visual C++ project)? How to implement communications between Flash ActiveX and its container? I know that Adobe has public PDF Reference and PDF portfolio is a part of this, but I can’t find any information about viewing PDF Portfolio content.

I was looking for it but I could not find. Please, give me the directions where I can find that documentation. Give me the link or send that documentation to [email protected] I'll be very grateful for any information concerning this subject. Can you tell me also what company has implemented viewing of PDF Portfolios with this method?

  • Indesign Loses Text Gradient After Export To PDF SWF

I have some Indesign files from a client and everytime I export from indesign to pdf and then convert to a swf, it removes the text gradient and adds black instead. Images attached for reference.
    <---PDF
    <---SWF
I've tried numerous export options. Is there something in particular that I'm supposed to be flattening?
Any help would be much appreciated!
    Thanks!

Hi DesPro_7, Thank you! Your answer was very helpful, and it seems to solve one of my problems, which is the same as what Franklinsdictionary describes.
I have a design using gradients in text, including a gradient effect on a rule below, used as a banner behind my text. I'm losing the gradient when the PDF is converted to SWF, and while we're working on a way to export to SWF directly from InDesign, our current workflow is cropping and optimizing a printer PDF to convert to SWF.
Before InDesign CS5, we had little trouble with transparencies, but this became an issue on our projects using CS5 or above.
Part of the optimizing process includes flattening transparencies, but text with gradients doesn't seem to flatten, nor do my banners created using rule below behind the text.
Any idea why this seems to be an issue with text? Any insight might help!

  • Text not searchable & copiable within an inported pdf doc in FM

    Hi all,
I am having an unique problem with FrameMaker 7.1!
There is a *.fm file and within it, I am importing by reference a pdf file.
The above imported pdf file was created from OpenOffice draw (contains some shapes and text).
After importing the above pdf into FM, I save the *.fm file and convert it to a pdf file.
In this final pdf, it is not possible to search for texts that is contained within imported pdf (drawings created with the OpenOffice and then converted to pdf)!
Why is this so......is there a work around?
Note : Texts withing pdf's created from MS-Office Word are however searchable in the final pdf created from FM file (imported by reference in the same way)!
    Thanks in advance,
    Debayan

    hi
    Error7103,
Is the text searchable and copiable in the original PDF before importing?
Ans> Yes, in the original pdf, the texts r searchable & copiable to a recognized text format!
But in the pdf created from the *.fm file, those texts are no longer searchable & copiable!
What options are you specifying when exporting it from OpenOffice?
The Security tab settings would be the first place to look.
Ans> Yes, I have taken a look into the "Security" tab of 'PDF Options' and there "Enable copying of content" &  "Enable text access....." has been checked!
Also in the 'General' tab, I have selected option "PDF/A-1" to be on the safer side (have also read the 'Help'), but all these don't solve my problem! :-(

  • Problem submitting PDF form in WorkSpace

Hi, my server is ES2.5 Turnkey install (Express mode) on Windows.
Client is IE-8 with latest Reader.
My form is a PDF form created in the WorkBench,
it has 2 pages, with some Digital Signature fields,
I have also added the "Process Fields" group onto page 2 of the form.
The form is to be routed in the standard WorkSpace.
At the Initiator step (Start Point), I use the Action Profile to do the Pre-fill of the form.
I have checked the Reader Extended box.
I use a Document variable as the Output from the StartPoint, the doc variable references my .PDF form template.
Everything works fine at the Initiator step, the form fields are all properly Pre-filled.
    The problem is:
after I click the Complete button, it goes to the next participant of the workflow process,
when that person opens up the form in the WorkSpace, it's all blank, none of the data at the Initiator step show up.
This User task uses the same Document variable as the Input (specified at the Presentation & Data tab).
What do I need to do to pass the form data along with the form to the next person in the Process?
What have I done wrong?  what should I check?
    thanks.

I sort of narrowed down the problem a little bit.
I created a smaller PDF form, it has Digital Signature field as well as the Process Fields group, plus some Text fields.  When I used it in the SAME process (changed the Document variable to point to this new small form of course) everything worked!  No data loss.  Everything on the form including the Signature got passed to the next person in the workflow just fine.
So I think my Process design is fine, the problem appears to be in the original 2-page PDF form.
But I can't figure out what thing on the form could have caused the data loss!
There's no error message anywhere, nothing in the JBoss server log either.
Has anybody seen similar problem like this?
    thanks.

  • Uploading PDF as a MIME and using it as a BSP page

    hi BSP gurus,
I have received a requirement where in we have to create a page with static content ( which has a processes with flow chart diagrams, text content and URL etc). User has provided this as a PDF document.
Could anyone suggest if we can directly upload this PDF document as a MIME and use it as a page?
P.S : I was able to upload PDF document as a MIME and create a page with flow logic of type application/pdf.
Please let me know how can I use this PDF to display as a static page. Let me know if there is any other better solution.
    Appreciate your response.
    Regards,
    Sameena

    Hello,
yes you can. Make right-click on your web application and then Create --> MIME object --> import. The file is uploaded into the web application and then you can call it, let´s say, like this:
    <htmlb:link id="link1"  reference="programming.pdf" text="presiona aqui"/>
    Application displays the PDF file.

  • Online pdf reviewing

We are looking for online PDF reviewing solution. Could you help me to decide which of Adobe products are required to implement the application featured with:
    -Web Application
-Allows concurrent review to any PDF file.
-Enables the PDF commenting before uploading PDF packages
-Comments added in Adobe Reader or Acrobat
-Comments should be extracted and inserted into Comments Database
    Thanks

1] At the beginning of the article I say "This topic was originally produced for RH HTML X3 but has been revised for RH X5. Changes in RoboHelp 6 and 7 were minor so the article remains good for those versions. Some additional output options were added to RoboHelp 8 and I will be updating the article for those."
2] Where do I say links for PDFs don't format properly? Popups yes but I cannot see such a reference for PDFs.
3] The topics in your printed document will be whatever you have defined in the print layout. You can start with the TOC and add them in the print layout, as my article describes or you can define a separate TOC, that's how I would do it. I am not clear why that is unrealistic.

  • View pdf files (file protocol) in firefox

been struggling some time : I want to open a pdf file from *my computer* in firefox : drag and drop produces an address like "file:///C:/path/to/file.pdf" but for clicking enter just pops up the Save dialog and choosing open with firefox just pops the same dialog over and over again
    Windows 7 x64, latest FF

In my default profile, renaming mimeTypes.rdf to mimeTypes.old and having Firefox regenerate a default file solves the issue. When I compare the files, there are many, many differences. In addition to "application/pdf" type there is the "application/x-pdf" type, and PDF appears as a possible file extension under everything from plain text files to unknown binary files. I don't think there is a simple way to do an elimination test to figure out what is causing Firefox to display the Open/Save/Cancel dialog. I removed the x-pdf stuff and that didn't work. So I removed every strange reference to PDF and then drag-and-drop worked. Not sure how to describe this bug.

  • Cannot view pdf in safari

Since I installed Adobe Reader X, I cannot view pdf files in safari. If I click on a .pdf file on my hard drive, it will open up with Preview and I can view it. But before I used to be able to see pdf files in the safari browser. But now the browser is black and the url references a pdf file.

    Back up all data.
Quit Safari. In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder... from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Copy the line of text below into the box that opens, and press return:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then launch Safari and test.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.
