Reference_By_Pointer BSOD T420 and T430

We have two users, one with a T420 and one with a T430, both with Windows 8 who are getting BSOD's up to 20 times a day.  The reason is Reference_By_Pointer.  Both users have applied all Windows updates as well as all driver updates from Lenovo System Update to no avail.  This has been very frustrating.  Any help/input would be greatly appreciated.

BlueScreenView might be able to pinpoint the exact driver causing the problem.

  • Fitting an SSD to the T420, and moving Windows to it WITHOUT a reinstall

    Hi there,
I'd seen some threads around about the T420's suitability for an SSD in the WWAN slot. Well I've just received my T420, and had ordered one of the Intel 80GB mSATA SSDs. I spent this evening moving the Windows install from the 500GB hard drive to the SSD, and didn't need to reinstall. I don't know why Lenovo don't offer the SSD as an option!
So I bought the 80GB Intel mSATA SSD from Ingram Micro; you can just fit it into the wireless WAN (i.e. 3G slot) in the T420 - took about 5 minutes, and you just have to tuck the aerial leads out of the way when you put the bottom back on. The BIOS detects the SSD without a problem.
M'colleague Pete suggested the trick to avoid a reinstall of Windows 7. In brief, we shrank the HDD's Windows partition down to 50GB, created a mirror of it on the SSD, then rebooted off the SSD and removed the mirror.
    In some detail:
    1) make a recovery disc before you start (I didn't but I know this stuff!);
    2) defragment your C drive (right click under My Computer, go to Properties->Tools and choose defragment). Took about 45 minutes to finish on mine;
    3) go to Computer Management -> Storage -> Disc Management;
    4) right-click both the SSD, and the internal hard drive, and convert both of them to Dynamic Disks
    5) right-click the larger of the two windows partitions on your hard disc, and shrink them to the size of your SSD (i.e. 74GB if you want to use the whole SSD for Windows) - wait for that to complete;
    6) create a mirror of the first two partitions on the hard drive, mirroring them to the SSD (i.e. right-click each partition, click Add Mirror, and choose Disk 1 as the destination);
    7) wait for the mirrors to complete (i.e. the Rebuilding... message will go away).
    8) start an administrator-mode command prompt (go to Start, type "command" and click the "Command Prompt" option while holding ctlr+shift);
    9) type "bcdedit /enum" and note the long number associated with the SECOND boot option. Then type "bcdedit /default {xxx}" where xxx is the number. For good measure type "bcdedit /timeout 2" to make sure you see the menu and can fix a mistake manually;
    10) reboot the system - before it comes back you'll see the windows boot loader menu - choose the second option (should be the default), which is to boot off your SSD
    11) when windows comes back up, you can go back to the Disk Manager and choose "Remove mirror" for disk 0, and you can reclaim the space. Hooray!
That is about the minimum that you need to do to move the partition and get it to boot.
I wasn't sure how to tell windows to install a bootloader on the SSD, and completely disengage the hard drive from the boot process, but I'm sure someone will fill me in.
NB I've not tested the above sequence PRECISELY, as I had some further fiddling to get my Linux installation to work, which isn't relevant to the above trick. I'd be interested to know if it works for someone else - as I said, please make sure you have your recovery DVDs and backups handy just in case.

You could have used Intel's Clone tools. My experience is that you are better off following the prescribed method of using the rescue disks to do a reinstall. The system seems to boot faster that way.

  • T420 and Dolby TrueHD / DTS HD Master Audio Passthrough / Bitstream

I am having trouble getting Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD Master Audio to bitsream from my T420 and hopefully you guys can shed some light. Currently I am using a displayport->HDMI adapter to input into my Pioneer Elite vsx-21txh receiver which in turn outputs to my 50" Toshiba TV. I can bitstream standards DTS and Dolby Digital no problem and get discrete surround sound, however when I try to play sources with DTS HDMA or Dolby TrueHD, the receiver doesn't recognize that there is a lossless signal and still decodes only the core DTS or DD.
I'm running windows 7, my receiver supports the HD lossless audio formats, and according to the "Playback device" properties on the T420's HDMI audio device, it also lists "DTS HD" and "Dolby TrueHD" under its encoded formats. My Nvidia driver is a bit old (268.71), however I don't think that is the issue...
Has anyone had experience outputting HD audio on the T420? Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Might be the NVS drive they updated and I tested it recently after its been out for very long time. See my Thread on it which is still current.

  • Lenovo T420 and T420s Ultrabay

Im curious if anybody can help me with this question.
Will the Ultrabay slot in the t420 and t420s support Sata 3 drives?
Im thinking of purchasing one of these laptops and wanted to replace the optical drive with an OCZ Vertex 3 SSD for my operating system.

What you like for screen is certainly individual but I have had it with a Hi Res glossy glass covered screens like the IPAD and the MB Pro.
I try and watch movies on my monthly cross country flights on my IPAD and all I can see is myself.  Even MBP now has an option for a matte screen.  Yes, a lot of people like that glary screen because it oversaturates colors, but that doesn't work for me.
Even when I look at photos I prefer true colors as opposed to oversaturated.

  • GT70 BSODs 9F and x116

    Hello,
    Good Morning/Night,
I have a laptop, MSI GT70 with the following specs:
    Windows 7 Ultimate 64x
    Intel Core i7 3660QM
    NVIDIA GTX 675M
    12GB RAM
    And the following problem:
A few months ago, my notebook started to show some strange BSODs, at the beginning they ware rare and only rebooted with no further issue, then after some time, Windows displayed my GPU as Standard VGA Driver with a "caution" icon, and suddenly unninstal the nvidia driver. I tried a lot of solutions on the web:
-Clean OS install with default drivers.
    -Computer cleanup
    -Updated Drivers
-expand nvlldksm.sys (sorry i don't remember the exact name)
    -etc (i don't remember everything i did)
Nowadays i have this problem: When my computer stays turned off for a few time and i turn on, windows recognizes normally the GPU, BUT when i try to play a game, it runs for 5-10 minutes and then freezes with a BSOD, normally 0x116 (95% of the time) and when it reboots, something strange happens, it freezes before windows logo or freezes on "Welcome" screen, so i reboot in safe mode, and the GPU is still showing in Device Manager, but without loading its drivers. Then i reboot again, and when windows succesfully reboots the GPU is shown as "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter" with a yellow triangle in it.
I really don't know what to do. MY CONCLUSIONS:
-Something with the driver (because the problem occurs when the driver is loading or is fully loaded)
-The hardware seems to be fine: in some rare occasions i was able to play for a few hours like when Windows installed the NVIDIA driver 327.02 and i was able to play for a few hours, note that 327.02 isn't compatible with my GPU)
Any help will be very welcome. I payed a lot for this notebook, about 8000 BRL or 4000 USD 2 years ago. It was a real sacrifice. The purpose is just gaming.
The computer has 2 years old, and always did its job perfectly.
    Thank You in advance.

Well, i am a bit disappointed with MSI, i spent one whole year gathering money to buy this notebook, here in my country, everything is very expensive, so i payed 4000 USD for a "not very powerfull" gaming notebook, and he came with a throttling problem, was a pain in the a** to fix it, and now he is almost useless, i cannot play games, the purpose of this notebook has been compromised with those BSODs.
And i can't buy another mobile GPU, here in my country a common GTX 970 costs up to 700 USD, so imagine how much would cost a mobile GTX... and i think that i wouldn't be able to find mobile GPUs for sale here.
By the way, i live in Brazil.
And the 675m is more fragile because it's architecture is Fermi, the GTX 670m and 680m are both Kepler, which is way better than Fermi.
If anyone has any possible help, please help, it will be a great sacrifice to build a new computer.
Maybe you can send the laptop back in for RMA. I have seen a user here mentioned MSI RMA would provide GPU upgrade when they run out of the spare parts. So maybe you can get a new mobile GPU from them, it may not be cheap though.

  • T420 Nvidia and T430 Nvidia

    Hi
     quick question...
    1) Should I buy T420 or wait for T430u. What NVIDIA model is it gonna come with (T430u)? Is it worth the wait?
    2) T420 has NVIDIA NVS 4200M Graphics with Optimus Technology, 1GB DDR3 Memory. Can I run Call of Duty Black Ops or MW3?
    Please help
    Thanks a lot!!!

    Hi all
    @ JDay
From what I know, there are customers who wish to have a laptop with business reliability, at the same time having the capability to render 3D objects or play games.
    @ TheDude
Lenovo have IdeaPad Y series as their gaming laptop, with slightly higher end graphics and JBL speakers. (Coming Y580 uses GTX660M). Maybe it's better to get T430 instead of T430u for your case, as thicker machine tends to have better cooling. If performance is more important than portability and you are either running serious 3D model or gaming, W530 would be recommended.
    Have a nice day!

  • IaStor Event ID 9 error with T420s and OCZ-Agility3

Hello, I need your help, as I've been battling this issue for the last 3 days and I'm extremely frustrated.
I'm running a Lenovo T420s (4170CTO) and replaced the IDE HD with a SSD OCZ-Agility3.
I am getting iaStor Event ID9 error in my system event log, with the system constantly freezing, halting, chocking, usually for about 5 minutes, then it unlocks itself, or at times never recovering.
I flashed the OCZ Drive Firmware to the latest 2.08
I flashed the Bios of the Lenovo 420s to 1.13
I also started over by cloning the default Lenovo install from the original drive onto the SSD so all lenovo install drivers are present. I also updated all the drivers, including the latest Intel Rapid Story Technology driver for the Intel Mobile Express Chipset SATA AHCI Controller.
Please let me know if you have advice on how to resolve the iaStor error. Very furstrating, the combo of the laptop and the SSD is extremely fast when it works, but the frequent crashes and lock ups are making me go nuts.
    Thanks,
    Ivan.

have you tried disable Intel Link Power Management (LPM)?  it fixes some iaStor timeout errors for certain SSD.

  • BSOD System_Service_Exception and Driver_Verifier_Detection on HP m9520f PC

    Hello,
I recently re-formatted and reinstalled Windows 7 Ultimate 64x on my HP Pavilion Elite m9520f PC.
I encountered the BSOD crashes several times a day of having the "System_Service_Exception 0x0000003B" and DRIVER_VERIFIER_DETECTED_VIOLATION 0x000000c4 error. The system automatically restarts when the BSOD takes place.
I have installed the most recent NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GS driver update to see if it solves the problem but nothing was solved. I also went to the Advanced Boot Options and did the last known good configuration option but did not work. More information on how to solve this problem would be sincerely appreciated.

Unplug the PC from household power.
    Remove the memory modules.
Put a single stick of memory into the slot nearest the CPU.
Once that is done you can plug the PC back in to see if it boots up.
If it does not boot up then unplug the PC.  Remove that memory module and put the other module in its place, plug in the PC and try booting up again.

  • T420 and windows 8(.1) power manager

As a two-year user of the T420 I am quite used to the power manager and its extended options. When I tried Windows 8 a couple of months ago I noticed that there were only the standard windows power management options available. Mind you, they worked fine, but they weren't near as good as the power manager of Lenovo.
My question is whether or not this functionality (power manager) is available for windows 8(.1) or will be available in the future?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

There is no ThinkVantage Power Manager for Windows 8.
Power Plans and idle timers are managed by the OS itself.
Lenovo-specific power options like Battery Stretch and 30-Day Standby can be configured in Lenovo Settings.
What specific feature of Power Manager do you think you're missing on Win8?

  • T420 and dual monitors using eGPC?

    Hello all,
I just purchased my first ThinkPad, a T420 (4180 62U).  So far I really love this machine.
Unfortunately for me, I didn't realize that this model does not support dual external displays with the built-in graphics processor.
I was wondering if anyone has had success with using a external graphics card along with the dock so that they can have the dual external monitors and the laptop screen running.
If so, what hardware should I be looking at? I would welcome any advice or recommendations.
    Thanks
    Zim

    Thanks for the quick reply!
I haven't actually tried the dock yet.  I was going to order one, then I read that you had to have the Nvida Optimus graphics card to actually do a dual monitor + laptop screen set-up which my ThinkPad does not have.
It's my understanding that the intel graphics HD 3000 allows another monitor, it just doesn't support tow external monitors.
    Am I mistaken about this?
If so, then I'll be real happy, because using 3 screens will be a great help when using Cisco Packet Tracer simulator, reading instructions and taking notes.

  • Recording audio from laptop with T420s and combo port

    Hi All,
I sometimes need to run my companys application and record the spoken messages for demo's etc. Previously, I did this simply by playing the messages through the laptop speakers and at the same time using the Windows Sound Recorder to record it from the laptop microphone (I didn't even need to use external speakers or microphone).
Now, with the new T420s that I have, when I speak into the laptop microphone it records my voice fine but when I use an application to play messages through the laptop speakers, the recorder does not pick up an sounds......is this a result of this "combo" port........if so, is there any way round it ?

I meant what if you recorded just your voice, then added the audio from your demo after the fact?
The sound chip takes the microphone input, and subtracts the speakers sound. This is what is needed most of the time, but in your case, it seems to be the exact opposite. Not sure if this can be disabled in SmartAudio.
You'll probably need Virtual Audio Cable to record multiple streams.

  • BSOD's and boot errors on HP Blackbird 002

    Hello,
I have a HP BLACKBIRD 002 LC with Quad Core - Intel(R) Core2(TM) Quad-Core 2.4GHz Q6600, 2 GB 1066MHz CORSAIR PC2-8500 DDR2 SDRAM, ASUS Striker Extreme, NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX, with 768MB of GDDR3 SDRAM running Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate.
I’ve had it since December 2007 and have had no problems whatsoever until this past December (2011).  Around the 30th or 31st of December, I started getting Blue Screens of Death (BSOD’s) at random points all with multiple and variable errors.  I’ve tried going into SAFE mode and SAFE mode with networking to resolve the issue, but would eventually get a BSOD.  Sometimes now, it won’t even power on the monitor or it shuts down completely when I try to enter the BIOS setup.  Other times, it boots into the NVIDIA boot agent and then exits due to some error.
Prior to December 2011 and the errors, I did not install any new hardware nor any major software, besides routine software upgrades that would pop up.  I conducted weekly scans with AVG virus software.  Last major thing I did was uninstall a game.
Since then I have tried changing the power source cabling, checking the seating of components and cabling inside, recovering Windows to earlier images (20 and then 15 December), re-installing Windows, replacing the CMOS battery, and running whatever memory or hardware diagnostic tools that I can find in the internal menus and the Vista CD.  My brother-in-law, who works as an IT help desk guy, took a look at it remotely and couldn’t figure it out.  I sent him some of the Minidump files(which I still have and can send) and the best he could isolate was consistent errors in the Minidump files with this “ntkrnlpa.exe    ntkrnlpa.exe+1026e0    0x82411000    0x827cb000    0x003ba000    0x4ea6b87e .”
I did not make a recovery disc since the shadow copy backed everything up.  I do have a full system image from earlier in December that I can use to recover my files, so at this point I’m fine with restoring the factory settings if that’s even possible.
I have no idea what to do next, so would appreciate any advice.  Thanks.

I'd pull the "backplane" (the PCB out) and run power and data cables to the drives which I would keep in there caddys.
...and as you said if you need the LED lighting, you can always find a power source for those somewhere.

  • T420s and non-use battery dissipation

The battery dissipation of my T420s, when not in use, is more than what I would have expected.  If the machine is fully charged (100% battery) when I put it in sleep mode, within a day (12-24 hours) the battery reports as low as 10% charge.  If the machine is fully charged and completely powered off then in that same timeframe the battery will report as low as 80%.
This is my first laptop so maybe this sort of drain when powered down/in sleep is to be expected, but it seems a bit high to me.  What are other owners experiencing?  Thanks.

  • Windows BSOD - IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP

Having a bunch of issues with my pc.. i ve built this a while ago (1.5 years ago-ish).
Recently one of my ssd failed (i had win installed on it). I couldn't install windows successfully on my second ssd because the installation process kept failing.. turns out one of the RAM sticks must ve been corrupt. After I singled out which one it was,
    it all went fine..
Now my win has been running just fine for a day but I started getting BSOD's when in a game or running a video.
Most of the time it gives the error IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, and one time it gave the UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP error.
I did 3 mem tests; my 3 remaining RAM sticks seem to be fine from the memtests' perspective.
I used FurMark GPU Stress Test to see if the video card is one at fault, and got no BSOD as it was pushed to the limit.

    Thanks,
    Mihai

These crashes were related to memory corruption (probably caused by a driver).
Please run these two tests to verify your memory and find which driver is causing the problem.  Please run verifier first.  You do not need to run memtest yet unless you want to.
If you are over-clocking anything reset to default before running these tests.
    In other words STOP!!!
If you do not know what this means you probably are not
1-Driver verifier (for complete directions see our wiki here)
2-Memtest. (You can read more about running memtest here)
