Reference Monitor Question

I'm in the market for a new TV. My old 19" Toshiba still works, but the quality isn't there anymore. Still good enough though to view video on before burning to DVD.
My questions are:
-- Will a flat screen LCD be comparable in any way to the CRT for general video monitoring? I'm not doing anything too professional, but am in the process of producing a series for broadcasting on my local cable TV station, so I need to know if I can expect to get a pretty good sense of what my quality will be on a LCD vs CRT. (If CRT is a better external monitor, I can keep the Toshiba nearby for video monitoring.)
-- Also, are there any features I should look for in the LCD TV I'll be buying that are applicable for DV editing?
Thanks.

hey there ramon,
are you doing work for hire-as in broadcast/feature film & documentaries regularly or for friends/family & the occassional video for $$? i do some work for hire-SD to DVD for a couple of clients & have gotten good responses about my work/product from them using a 23" Philips LCD HD monitor(@1920 x1080i over DVI) in Digital Cinema Preview Fullscreen when i work in FCP, sometimes i use FW NTSC 720 x 480 output to a Toshiba 9" CRT TV/DVD combo w/ composite in-i have space issues & like having the HDTV option for when i'm in there working & take a little break for my brain while i'm having lunch. & i use the DVD player on the Toshiba for checking my DVDs playback. a "Pro" LCD monior + a card like AJA or Blackmagic to view video outside of Digital Cinema Preview will be a large chunk o' cash, i didn't have but i wanted/needed a larger display, hence the 2nd best option-LCD HDTV monitor & use Digital Cinema Preview Fullscreen-especially since i made the move to HDV for my own projects it was my only lo-$$ option.
good luck.

  • Which Studio Reference Monitors for a video edit suite?

Sorry that this questions does not have to much to do with Final Cut/Logic Pro though i don't know where i can ask people how know an video edit suite.
I'm looking at buying some Studio reference monitor and have found a pair i think are going to have what i need, untill the question of what happens if i wanted to go from a 2 monitor system and then the need came around for editing 5.1 dolby sound.
The monitors i'm looking at are Roland DS-5 2-way active digital Reference monitors. these have built in amps.
    thanks for the help

my suggestion would be to get something that's an industry standard. that way you can somewhat insure that you're hearing what everyone else is hearing. this is important. i use genelec monitors and i love them. if you have a small room get some 1030 or 8040 monitors.. if you have a larger room, go for a pair of 1031's or 8050's.. then add from there.. also make sure to get a totally passive attenuator: ie.. a-designs atty, or maybe even go into the dangerous line to if you want surrond.. also you have the nautilus stuff and more.. but make sure to take the standard high road and you won't regret it in the end. i have gone from totally crappy monitors to genelecs and everything in between. which means that i have lost money on upgrades when i should have just started with the standard from the beginning..

  • Is Reference Monitor Real Time?

I never questioned this before but is the reference monitor realtime?
    The behavior i get is....
    frames update when i scrub
    shows color changes
freezes when i plat the SEQ
It has always done that but I was wondering it it could play simultaneously with the SEQ. Its set to composite video now.

Unfortunately, you cannot get live playback from both the Program and Reference Monitors simultaneously.  It's a design flaw, in my view, that greatly limits the usefulness of the Reference Monitor.  Please let Adobe know you'd like it corrected.

  • What's your favorite Reference Monitors?

Looking to purchase a new pair of Active Monitors and was wondering what you guys were using with Logic out there? I was looking at the Alesis M1 Active MkII to start with..

Get what you think sounds best. I mean, you're the one who's going to be working on them day in and day out, right? I know that this question gets asked a lot, but the more and more I read people's responses, the more and more you realize that it is nothing but a matter of personal preference. We know that David Robinson loves Tannoy's. We know that I love KRK's. But that's us. Personally, the last set of Tannoy's I listened on were a little to strong in the high end for my taste. But that's me. My ears are sensitive in that frequency range, therefore the Tannoys didn't appeal to me...personally. That's not saying they aren't a great speaker, just not for me.
It also comes down to just flat out knowing your reference monitors. To do that, you have to work with them. That's all there is to it. When I first got my KRK's I couldn't get a mix to sound good in my car to save my life, or any other place for that matter. But now I know them. I know what to expect out of them. You could go out and blow thousands on a set of monitors, but until you know them, they aren't going to be used to their full potential. It's that simple.
So, if you are looking at the Alesis M1 Active MkII and like what you hear, get them. Or go to your local shop and A/B a whole slew of monitors. That's what I did before I settled on the KRK's that I have in my setup. They were easy on the pocket book and they sound great to me, so I got them.

  • Reference Monitor - Capture Card

I am in the process of finishing our HD editing system Build and had a question about a third monitor setup. The two reqular monitors are the Dell Ultrasharp 2408WFP and the GPU is the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 295. Even though I am still a fan of for CRT's, the LCD's are getting better. Two of which, the Panasonic BT-LH1760 and the Sony LMD-2050W we have access to. We use PP CS4. For the Reference Monitor and HD-SDI, I assume we need a PCI-e card. I have been reading and have seen some thoughts on the Matrox cards with PP, wonding some thoughts on the following and any suggestions as to how it works with PP CS4:
    Blackmagic DeckLink HD Extreme
    DeckLink Studio
    Blackmagic Intensity Pro

For Firewire to HDMI, look here:
    http://www.aja.com/html/products_Io.html
    BUT -
why not just get an HD monitor w/ DVI in? Lot of them have that.
Going w/ a blackmagic or AJA card will give you more control of whether or not it appears as a 2nd monitor tho.
Let's face it tho, HD monitoring is the wild wild west. W/out real hi end analysis tools there is no practical difference between having a dedicated 'monitoring' out vs having a shared desktop / 2nd monitor.

Asking 'which studio monitors' is liek asking which flavor of ice cream, in some ways. So many choices that range in price, and it's really up to preference and function. What's good is that there are so many models out these days and some excellent inexpensive models, whereas just 6-7 years ago, powered monitors were generally rather pricey and less prolific. Good thing about self-amplified models is that you don't have to take up the extra space with an external amplifier.
I would go into a Guitar Center or Sam Ash and try some out. Depending on how much sound editing/edsign you do, there's a whole plethora of choices that are very affordable. For most video editing purposes, a good pair of 5.25" woofer monitors and 50-75W or so are plenty, unless you have a really large rig/console with a lot of distance between you and the speakers, or yo plan on playing things really loud. You may or may not want to add a subwoofer depending on the sound work you do. The Rolands you mentioned, the M-Audio BX5a, Yamaha HS50M, Samson Resolve 50a, Alesis M1 Active 520, KRK RP5, TapCo S5, and others in the same size/price range will give plenty of volume and accuracy for video work, and even sound design. Choices get more specific and pricier for those who do a lot of recording/mixing and sound work specifically. But a lot of those choices would be overkill for a video editing setup.
It's important that you get the sound to the monitors well, though, and preferably not via a mini-plug to RCA adapter from your computer's rear sound out jack. Look into good USB or Firewire audio interfaces or sound cards. Just about any of the compact powered monitors out these days are much better choices than the subwoofer and computer sattelite speaker packages that you can get at any store selling computer stuff these days.
As for 5.1...I never do any 5.1 surround work. I usually do all my editing and designing in stereo, and when it comes time to the final mix at a facility, we take care of the surround there, because they know how to do it. For most users who try to do 5.1 on whatever software that's available, it usually doesn't come out quite right...either because the mix itself is not good, or they just put things in 5.1 without checking for phasing anomalies, or the process by which the sound is put into 5.1 is just a poor reverse-pro-logic kind of thing. It's just not the same as having the sound professionally mixed and mastered.
I don't know the extent of sound work you do, but in general, I would suggest that you not worry abot 5.1 while editing and finalizing your sound edit/design. It's less to worry about and fight with, and a good stereo edit/mix will sound fine on a system with good pro-logic through a 5.1 speaker system anyway. Plus, speaker and room placement of just a stereo pair is essential enough, with 5.1 it's even more of a pain, if you really want to edit and design accurately. Can you set up all 5 speakers equidistant from your listening position at your editing station without rearranging the entire room? It's much easier with just two speakers, and since they are studio monitors, they are (a little) less dependent on the overall room placement, hence 'nearfield'. 5.1 Surround usually isn't done in editing, it's done in mixing and mastering, where they assign which sounds belong where, and process the whole thing out correctly.
    Good luck!

  • Only showing frame in reference monitor that I am paused on

This seems to have just started happening out of no where.
My reference monitor is no longer playing through the project and showing each frame, it will only show the frames if I scrub through them or pause / start on them.
All I did was put in a new audio track (which I removed but didn't solve the problem)

One has never been able to play footage nor have realtime scopes in the reference monitor.
You can only scrub to make it move.
Only Source monitor and Program monitor play realtime.

  • MacBook Pro display usable as a reference monitor for a camera shoot?

I am shooting a video project and wish to try and use my 17" Mac Pro display screen as a reference monitor on a live mini-DV camera shoot for focus and color versus lugging around a heavier CRT and battery back. Will the MacPro display be sufficient to significantly judge color, exposure, and focus? I know it's not ideal, but with improvements in LCD displays over the last few years I would like to hear from other users who may have tried using their display screens in this way and see what their results were.
    Many thanks,
    John

While the answer in itself is probably no, you could however spend some time to get yourself a known comparitive situation. With some careful calibration and comparison to a final result you should be able to get it to a point where, while not perfect, you know what you're going to get.
By the way, the matte display will produce far more consistent colour than the glossy display.
Utlimately though for the best results the suggested CRT solution is the one to go for even though it's somewhat a pain.

  • Reference monitor doesn't play simultaneously in real time? How is it used?

I thought the point is to have two monitors playing back simultaneously for scopes / composite or to send to a secondary feed for clients, similar to video village on set.

Not sure why you started a new thread on this ..but anyway.
The reference monitor is not designed or suitable for a secondary feed to external monitors.
It is used to have two looks at same frame eg a composite and a scope
or two looks at  different frames eg unganged .  This maybe for a CC and grading comparison.
It is not absolutely vital that it plays in real time for either of these instances.

  • Premiere CS6 reference monitor blacks out!!

I am using PPCS6 on a windows 7 machine and it has been fine up until today, now the reference monitors on screen and my external monitors just keep going black and I have to save, exit and open it again for clear it but it only lasts a couple of minutes before it does it again.
No plug ins, updates etc were installed since yesterday when it was working fine.
    Any help?

    Welcome to the forum.
The first thing that I would investigate would be my video driver(s).
What is the make and model of your video card?
What is the currently installed version and date, for the video driver?
Is that the latest from nVidia, or AMD/ATI? If not, download, install and test the latest version.

  • 2 Reference monitors for Waveform/Vectorscope

CS3 - Is there a way to add a second reference monitor? The first for waveform and the second for vectorscope? I don't care for the combined ones because they are too small. Also, is there a way to make it default to waveform every time PP starts instead of having to change it to that mode every time? Finally, what does it take to make them display realtime while the video plays?
    Thanks!
    C

I don't think there is a way (I would love to learn there is, though).
But you know what? I agree completely (and I made sure this was heard) that WFM and Vectorscope are the essential ones and that the existing combo options make them way too tiny. What we need is not a second reference monitor, but these two things: one one hand, more versalite combination options (so you can have whichever two you want, side by side). On the other, the scopes display shouldn't have a fixed aspect like it does now. It should resize, even deform, the scope display so that it fits horizontally as you drag the reference panel as you like.

  • Multi-cam vs. the Reference monitor

I use multi-cam to cut two views together.
Each view is in its own sequence, and those two sequences are the two tracks in the "multicam source"
While viewing the "multicam destination" sequence,  I often use the Application-wide keyboard shortcut to "Toggle Multi-camera View".
I like to keep the Reference Monitor up with some scopes on it while editing, to keep an eye on the relative color between the two cameras.
Sometimes, the Reference Monitor pops back to "Composite" view, instead of my scopes.  It happens SOMETIMES when I use the hotkey to
    toggle Multi-camera view.
Whether it changes the Reference Monitor view depends on which panel has focus when I hit the hot key!
    1) If the Program monitor has focus, and I hit the hot key to toggle Multi-Camera View, no problem, the Ref monitor stays on scopes as I want.
    2) If the Timeline panel has focus, then the silly Reference Monitor pops back to Composite View.
FYI, I checked, and there is no specific Timeline panel hotkey using the same keystroke (I am using shift-6)
Any idea if there is something to prevent the Ref Monitor from changing its settings from scopes to Composite like this?
I doubt this is an intended behavior, probably just an odd edge case.
I do see that the Program Monitor panel has an available keyboard shortcut called "Multi-Camera", but since I don't have the problem when focus is in the Program Monitor, I don't think this is relevant.  (I have it assigned to no keyboard shortcut right now).
As a side note, It would be really nice if the program monitor could remember for each sequence whether it should be showing "Multi-Camera View" or not.
I often have to switch between looking at the multi-cam destination, and looking at other sequences... and it makes no sense that those other sequences should be viewed in Multi-cam mode, just because some other sequence was being viewed in multi-cam mode.   No?

Premiere Pro CC, Version 7.0.1 (105)
    OS X 10.8.5

    Right,
So here was the problem, in case any of you people out there are going nuts with what appears to be a broken project.
In the timeline above the multicam layer, I was dropping in graphics. I was cutting and pasting them in.
In order to do so I have to highlight the layer that I want to drop the graphics onto.
    As shown below.
As soon as a layer gets a highlight other than the Multicam layer, the Program Monitor will no longer show multicam.
Remove the highlighted layer as seen below.
    Hope this helps someone.
    Cheers..

  • Using reference monitor with master clip

I love the ability to color correct the master source rather than each timeline clip! I love it so much that I want to color correct my master clips independently of the editing process but the problem is that I cannot get the reference monitor to display a scope that is synchronized to the master source clip.
In working around this the old way, edit-first, I still find often that other parts of the master clip (not chosen for a sequence) are much better for color correction (like a good face or a color calibration card.) Thus I assume there is a way to do this that I do not understand? (Or, alternately, am I thinking about it wrong?)
    Thank you!

I have identical real time TC for all 3 cameras, and two cams are continually recording. the third is roaming.
Here's a link to a past project: News & Events :: PCC's Christmas Lights Spectacular :: Pensacola Christian College
As you can see, one is locked, one is on a tripod getting closeups, zooms, and pans, and the third is moving around getting various angles. The two on a tripos are left continually recording, but the roamer starts and stops (it's handheld, so it's easier to just start/stop).
@shooternz, could you elaborate on your method a bit? You seem to indicate that you can just drop the third camera's clips in the sequence based on Time Code. I'm not familiar with TC Panels or TC Markers.
As for not all of them being used... I do have several dozen clips left over the course of a half-hour concert... :/

  • Reference Monitor Stopped Working

While working on a project I had to use "Interpret footage" to change the frame rate and pixel aspect ratio on a clip. After making the change, my reference monitor stopped working correctly.
Prior to making the above frame rate change, I was using the reference monitor for a waveform analysis which would play smoothly on both the Program and Reference monitors. Once I made the clip change, I lost the ability for the reference monitor to play smoothly-- it only holds an image of a single frame. In order to see the clip play I have to hold down the right arrow button. The program monitor works fine. And yes, it is set to gang.
The interpret footage command screwed something up. Any ideas?
I'm using Premiere CS2 with XP Pro Service Pack 3. NVIDIA Quadro FX 1400 card, AMD Dual Opteron 254 processors on a Tyan Thunder mobo.

    Hey,
I had this exact same problem!
I know this is an old thread, but just incase someone comes along here looking for a working solution,
    Liquid80 from http://forums.adobe.com/thread/688529
    posted this answer,
"Then  for some reason I decided to click on "Window" on the menu bar without  even thinking and then clicked "Program Monitor"!!! PROBLEM SOLVED!!!
There  are TWO different views. One called "Program Monitor" and the other  called "Reference Monitor" and the annoying thing is they look nearly  identical but function differently!!!
So all this time you had "Reference Monitor" open instead of "Program Monitor"."
    All the best
