Reference movie or self-contained

which is the better workflow from fcp into compressor. making a dvd of about 12 minutes which will eventually go into dvdsp. i took a reference movie and about 60 percent through it keeps stalling. no idea why. bit rate is normal..as i used the best settings for dvd (under 90 minutes) and didnt change anything. ideas? help? thanks

How do you expect your OS, your application(s) and writing a relatively big file all to run on an already too-full drive?
Sue, you've been around here long enough, go out and get a couple more drives, and clean the junk off your system drive. That ought to be OS, Apps only.

  • FCP quits when exporting ref movie or self contained

This one has be pulling my hair out. When I try to export an hour long project, FCP quits about half way in. Doesn't seem to matter if it is a ref movie or self contained. I get the unexpectedly quit window. I have no idea how to fix this. It is extremely frustrating. Any ideas?
    Best.

Don't use an XDCAM sequence setting. Mixing that format with ANY OTHER FORMAT causes issues. I have had 3 jobs in the last 2 weeks that were HDV and XDCAM, and when they were in their native timeline settings, with other footage and graphics mixed in, I had HORRID times exporting and outputting. The solution? Changing the sequence compressor to ProRes, and rendering again. Then the projects exported fine.
So my rule #1 when dealing with HDV or XDCAM, is to edit in a ProRes sequence...all the time. No matter what. Dealing with GOP native, when you add other things like stills or other footage, is cause for nightmare issues. That GOP format is just too whacky to deal with.

  • How to test if a QT movie is Self-contained?

I have had difficulties in DVD SP because some movies produced in FCE were (inadvertently) created with the box "Make Movie Self-contained" unchecked. I had lost some of my files on my Scratch Disc (render files I think) on which the movies depended and so they would not open and DVD SP itself refused to launch. I recovered from that by devious methods.
However, I now want to confirm or otherwise that each of my movie files is Self-contained, and if not, to re-create them in FCE (if I still have the Capture Scratch for their FCE projects). How can I confirm that please?
    Two possible tests:
    1. Open the movie and do Window -> Show Movie Properties. Select "Video Track" and the "Resources" tab. If the only resource listed is the movie itself, that means the movie is Self-Contained (because it is not listed as relying on any part of FCE's Scratch Disc);
    2. Close the movie. Dismount my (external) FCE Scratch Disc and try to reopen the movie. If it opens, it is Self-Contained (again, because it cannot possibly be reliant on FCE's Scratch Disc).
Is each of these tests definitive and reliable?
    Thanks.

If your render files are definitely on the external drive only, then method 2 is reliable. Depending on the file method 1 may not be. QuickTime still treats it as a complete movie file.

  • Files in MOV-Container missing, although MOV is self-containing

    Hello everybody,
I've got a strange problem here. We are capturing MPEG4-Files with a camera and cutting those files with quicktime pro (so that we don't have do re-encode those files in order to gain time). The files consist of a few MPEG4-Movie-Sequences (that are copy/pasted from the original files) and a small Signation-MPEG4 from the harddisk. Then the files are saved as self-contained quicktime-files and transfered to another computer.
But a few files will not contain the signation, although the moviefiles from the camera are in the container.
Is there a difference in Quicktime if a file is added by drag'n'drop, by "Insert" or "add to movie"?
I can't reproduce the problem (it comes up on a Mac and on Win with Quicktime 7.1.3) and it scares me
Thank you very much, i would appreciate your help.

Could it be a solution that the file is - during editing the video - "Saved As" a self containing movie... But afterwards, when the last file is insertet and when the video is finished just "Saved". Maybe if you save a video through "Save" (and not "Save as"), for new, added files just the references will be saved in a self contained-video.
    Your thoughts?

  • FCP 5.1 keeps trying to export movie as self-contained

Not sure if this is a bug or this is just user error, but in 5.1 i'm trying to export a sequence as a reference movie so that i can send it to iDVD. Can't do self-contained since I don't have the HD space. Regardless of whether or not I hit "make self-contained movie" it crunches, maxes out the read/write meter in Activity Monitor, and starts trying to export the whole movie.
Am I setting something wrong in a weird pref pane?

How do you know the program is creating a self-contained movie? It doesn't sound as though you are letting it finish.
If there are a great number of effects that are unrendered when you export as a reference, FCP must render them to be included with the pointers and ther result is the reference movie can be nearly as large as a self-contained movie.
FWIW - if you don't have enough space for a self contained movie on your internal harddrive, you are probably operating without enough space, period ....

  • Exporting Quicktime Movie not self contained

I exported a QT file withought adding the .mov extension to it. I am exporting a movie that is not self contained so that I can create a QT movie (jpegA) in QT. The Process I used: file>export>QTmovie. It does not create an extension automaticaly so I didn't add it. The file has the FCPlogo with the QT logo inside, but neither FCP or QT will recognize it. I tried just adding the .mov, didn't work do I have to recreate the file and add the .mov manually during creation? It is huge and took 5-6 hrs to create, Is there a way to use the file that was created?
This seems counter intuitive. Never used a program that created a file that I needed to add the extension for without it prompting me to set it, especially when I am asking specifically for a QT movie. Please telll me there is a way to use this 4.5 gig file, I don't have the time to recreate it. Thanks Marc

The movie is completely rendered as far as I can tell(no red lines above sequence, how can I check or make sure it's rendered by rendering in a specific way other than render needs render). It is 94 min, shot in HDV, up to 4-6 tacks of video in some cases with 9 tracks of audio so that may account for size and length of time?
Same machine is being used and I didnt't move the render files. No red lines on project.
You can easily recreate the problem by going through my steps. It is stupid that the .mov doesnt show up. My question is, can I add it afterwards in some way? Make it a smart file or whatever. It is the same type of file just without the extension it didn't ask me to designate or auto designate like would make sense. Sorry for the frustration, I really appreciate your help

  • How to share reference movies ?

I have a few QT REFERENCE movies in my iTunes library.
They play just fine on the Mac running iTunes.
However, when I share my iTunes library on my local network, these reference movies dont appear in the shared library. Everything else does - including QT self-contained movies.
Also, REFERENCE movies arent visible to REMOTE running on my iPhone.
QUESTION : Is it possible for iTunes to share reference movies ?
I've searched iTunes online help, the iTunes forums and Tech Notes ...
The question has been asked at least twice (in 2007), but appears to remain unanswered.
    Any suggestions ?
(apart from creating self-contained movies from the reference movies - that just gobbles up disk space)

    A clue ...
The QT reference movies refer to .dv movie files ...
As far as I can tell, iTunes wont share .dv movies - whether reference movies or self-contained.
Does anyone know what movie formats CAN be shared ?
Noting in the iTunes doco on this topic ...

  • Automator workflow for Quicktime "Save As... reference movie"

I need just to "Save As (a reference movie)" from within Quicktime... I have tried using the "Compress using most recent settings" but that still tries to make it "self-contained," whereas i need specifically to Save As a Reference Movie.
    Any thoughts?

If you save as a reference movie it just uses a pointer to the already existing content which you cannot move or molest, or it won't work. You want to compress it then you make a new movie, and self contained as a result.

  • Losing reference movies when trying to batch in Compressor

    Hi -
I am making a number of time code window burns of interviews I shot for a project. The project was shot in AVC-Intra 100 1080p30. I have exported all movies as reference QT movies, not self-contained. When I drag multiple movies into compressor to batch, compressor hangs up and the reference movies become corrupted.
I have done this exact drill before with another project with no problems.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

  • QuickTime Reference Movies of Fully-Rendered Timeline Taking Forever

Sometimes when I attempt to export a fully-rendered timeline as a reference QuickTime (NOT self-contained), the "Writing Audio and Video" bar takes over an hour (for an 8-minute project) and results in files sizes of many GBs. Has anyone else experienced this?
    Thanks,
    Zap

If your Sequence isn't fully rendered before you export, the reference movie will have to perform the render ... taking extra time and it includes those renders as part of the reference file (hence the larger than expected file size).
To avoid this, make sure the Sequence is fully rendered PRIOR to exporting.

  • Self contained or reference movies

    hi there guys
wondering if someone with more knowledge on this subject can help.
im producing 500 copies of a film i did of a band in final cut pro studio which is being exported to idvd. ive made up a cool menu with chapter markers and bonus features and all seems to work ok, apart from tonight...!
i had my film stall half way through and started to get worried! im basically making all these copies through my new macbook pro and my intel mac and was wondering if anyone knows what is the best means of putting your film to idvd for final presentation?
i have to admit ive always used reference files to final cut as opposed to the main self-contained file and its served me well in the past but was hoping to hear other views. i didnt think there was any difference in the final outcome to be honest.
i realise it may just be a duff DVD but thought i would check from folk who know better.
    thanks very much
    matty

Ditto to the excellent advice already posted above.
the idvd project i did is in best performance but i want to change it to best quality for burning - i take it you can do this at any time by changing the project prefs??
If i'm not mistaken, the iDVD project will have to re encode if you opt to switch between these compression modes which is time consuming.
If I were doing this I'd take Fred's advice and out source the burning. If it were under 50 copies I'd use at least 2 burners from a disc image and lower the burn speed to 2x in Toast / Apple's Disc Utilities.

  • Export To Quicktime Movie (Reference or Self Contained) - GENERAL ERROR

    Hi -
I recently had to re-install FCS2 due to problems with OSX.
Now, for some reason, when I want to export from FCP to get a QT reference movie, I get a general error message. All other options from FCP export seem to work, but NOT export to Quicktime Movie.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.
    Chris

    how so?
we can all do with a dummy's cheat sheet e.g. when making a master monitor the record device, not the computer.
So come on, what'd you do?

  • Self-contained movie asking for source files

I have exported a final cut pro movie as a self-contained file, and after I deleted the source files, as my harddrive was jammed full, I am unable to burn the project onto a dvd. The file won't open in quicktime or final cut pro. It keeps asking for a source file to continue - HELP! It was a two hour movie that I am to be burning for XMas, and it has slipped out of my computer apparently. It was opening on its own without my harddrive connected before I deleted the source files, so I KNOW it was self-contained which is the only reason I deleted the files in the first place! Thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

This is not a new problem. I have encountered it through many versions of QuickTime.
Typically, it happens after I assemble a compilation of clips from various sources, including imported Windows Media files. I diligently check the "Save as a self-contained movie" option, which always indicates a file size larger than the "Save as reference movie" option -- for example, 1.7 MB vs. only 9.2 KB for a short clip. And yet, if I have discarded the original clip, QuickTime is unable to play some of the supposedly self-contained movies because it can't find the deleted source files. It's kind of maddening, especially when there's no way to recover the original clips.
I haven't tracked this, but I suspect it might happen when a clip in one format is pasted into a movie without first converting it to QuickTime. Has anyone else noticed this possibility and tested it?

  • Cannot export a self contained Qucktime movie

As of yesterday I have lost the ability to export a self contained Quicktime move from FCE. The sequence is complete and rendered and I have exported as recently as last month but now it simply makes what's known as a reference movie with the suffix .mov
The Export drop down menu still displays all the Quicktime options.
Additionally the Quicktime icon in my dock when clicked displays a question mark. I tried downloading Quicktime but still no go.
    Please help Tom

Right but what I am trying to convey is that I need to generate the brushed chrome framed, high quality, up-loadable, stand alone video that I used to get with ease and I cannot get that with my FCE. What are you calling it, what is the proper term because I always called them Quicktime. I made one less than 2 months a go.
Quicktime is present in my System Prefs but is not in the dock. When it was a question mark appeared over it. I cannot find it, launch it, etc.

  • Movies edited in QT Pro and saved as self-contained revert in iTunes

Hi all. I'm having a consistent bad experience editing QT movies in the QT Pro player. This is the typical workflow (on Mac OS X 10.5.7, lates QT update):
    1. Screencast captured in iShowU HD saved as .mov with H264 codec
    2. Edited .mov in QT Player (Pro) to trim unwanted footage and tidy dropped frames etc. This sometimes is just deleting portions of the footage, sometimes copying a selection and pasting in a new document, sometimes doing this to combine multiple selections in a new document.
    3. Save as self-contained QT .mov (every time without fail - I don't use reference movies)
These new movies look fine in QT Player, and import nicely into Keynote, and my Keynote presentations export to Quicktime movies fine.
However, when I try to export in ANY format and view in other software (including iTunes and the iPhone), either using QT presets (iphone, AVI, etc) or custom settings, or Handbrake (ffmpeg), or zamzar.com, the result is always either the full unedited footage, or something that approaches the original, but with corruption at the edit points.
The problems are occuring on both my MBP and my Mini, which have very slightly different software installed (eg Perian on the MBP but not the Mini)
What's going wrong and what can I do to put it right?
    Many thanks in advance.
    Mac

I am not talking about mpeg 1 or 2. I take a 100 MB dv, mpeg4 or h.262 clip, set an in and out point, hit trim to selection and hit apple S. it QUICKLY saves the file without rewriting the data fork and keeps it at 100 MB on my disc, even though the data size is now 50 MB in QT. so, the data is not lost, it is still there on my HD, just with new tags to tell quicktime what part to use and what part to ignore . I would prefer to just keep the one 100 MB file that i could retrieve the original if i want instead of keeping that 100 MB file and choosing save as and getting a new 50 MB file, now having to store 150 MB to have the original and edited one.
