Referenced files on RAID NAS via wireless = SLOW

I've done some searching here to see if this question has come up before and I didn't find much. Here's the situation: I have all of my photographs on an external network attached storage (NAS) device running X-RAID (proprietary version of RAID 5 essentially), accessing it via the built-in wireless in my Macbook Pro, and when I import photographs from the device into Aperture, I make sure they are set to be referenced. All is well and good at this point.
The problem is that when I try to browse the images after they have been imported, Aperture seems to take forever to load just one image... literally on the order of 30 seconds or more per image! This is incredible, since the speed of the wireless is 54mbit. The files I am working with are around 12 MB each, so even 2 MB / sec, it should take maximum 6 seconds to load an image.
I confirmed that the wireless is definitely not the problem here by dragging and dropping a file from one of my collections using the Finder. Total time is about 3 seconds from the RAID to my desktop, and the Network page in Activity Monitor confirms the surge of network flow across the wireless. Back in Aperture land, it literally crawls along at a snails pace of around 400 - 500 K/s until the image finally loads and the Loading circle goes away.
Anybody know if there's anything that can be done to speed up Aperture? Doesn't seem like it from what I can see on the preferences page. sigh - this is really starting to annoy me, all these little problems with Aperture. It's definitely not turning out to be the be-all-end-all photo management solution I was hoping it would be.
p.s... I completely disabled preview generation and erased all the previews from my library. No projects cause previews to be generated now.

Your wireless speed will be nowhere CLOSE to 54 Mbit. That is the rating on the specification -- but if you get 20 Mbits/sec you are doing very well. The specifications on wireless are, practically, 2-3 times what anyone can get. It's an industry-wide lie.
There is absolutely no way you will get "good" performance like this. The closest you could come would be to turn on previews. But still... you need a wired connection. It doesn't really matter if drag copying is faster (even by 2-3 times) than working within Aperture for copying... neither are acceptable for working with RAW files. Get a wired (Gigabit) connection or use a direct connection... Firewire 400 or better.

  • Transferring file pc laptop - ibook via wireless

    Hi,
I need to transfer files from my ibook to a win laptop.
1)I used a flash drive but got damaged files.
    2)Os 9 can't see my ipod nano!
I've got an airport 802.11b on my ibook and an intel 802.11b/g on the asus win laptop. Can I transfer files through wireless? How?I'm a newbie of os 9
    tnks a lot

A1: Unfortunately, I am not familiar with the card in question (someone else may be able to provide you with exact information). Generally speaking however, special Mac driver software is needed for Ethernet cards.
A2: There are some limitations regarding Mac OS 10.4 and certain older systems. Without going into details, you may not be able to use all machines as servers, but it is usually possible to create a connection that will allow files to be transferred.
A3: Yes, a direct connection, typically (depending upon the machines involved), requires a crossover cable. A connection via a hub or a switch (router) will use normal cables.
For additional information, have a look here and here.
There are a couple of alternative solutions. Pro primo, you could try a wireless connection to your existing network. This web page could perhaps be of interest. Secondly, a CompactFlash card (or another flash card) used with an inexpensive PC Card adapter (see, for example, here) would let you carry out the transfers.

  • MBP keeps crashing, won't let me transfer data via wireless or hardwired to external or NAS,

Im somewhat of a novice so bear with me, MBP late 2008 core2duo, 4gb RAM, 128gb SSD is machine specs running 10.9.1. Whenever I try and copy and paste through finder files of any size over 100mb it locks up and spin dumps via wireless, finder stops responding cpu spikes erratically, memory pressure sits a constant 2.91gb for a length of time up to an hour before it restarts and gives me the gray screen of death, after 3 more hard boots it will eitehr start up or I dump the PRAM, I have verified permissions via utility, all good, exit disk utility and computer fires back up opening applications as it was pre-crash, files that were being transferred are inaccessible and have to be deleted off the media I am transferring to, which is a 2tb WD My Cloud NAS, when I perform same operation with console open to try and monitor logs for what exactly is happening I get spindump and console stops responding, computer locks up and process restarts. I have tried plugging directly into my router and the only noticeable difference is that I dont get a spindump, everything locks up and I get same results.
Under console in the Report Panic i get this :
    1/17/14 11:52:44.517 PM ReportPanic[227]: com.apple.message.domain: com.apple.ReportPanic.matchedpanic

    Sender_Mach_UUID: 9A39CD52-406C-33F5-A1C6-E8D8FCD836D5
not sure what that means... Under system log queries i get about 1800 of these :
    1/18/14 12:18:39.345 PM com.apple.WebKit.Networking[220]: unlink of file /Users/<<NAME REMOVED>>/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/fsCachedData/F70130BF-75FF-4F51-BA6D-631F35400D FF failed.  Errno=2
and than two of these at the end :

  • Can't copy files to NAS via smb

I'm trying to move my Logic files to a NAS in a RAID 1 configuration prior to installation of Logic 9. I'm connecting via Samba. However, I'm continually getting this error message after only a few files are copied:
"The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items."
Going to the first file that did not copy, I can see that I have read/write permission for it. I've repaired permissions, verified disk, etc. with no luck. After numerous failed attempts, I tried copying the files in question to the desktop and it worked fine. I used these NAS drives two weeks ago to make disk images of both my iMac and MacBook prior to loading Snow Leopard, plus I ran built-in utilities on them, so I'm fairly sure they're working correctly.
I searched the forums and didn't see anything exactly like this, so any help you can provide is appreciated.

I'm having the same problem when trying to copy files to an SMB share on a OpenFiler based NAS. I noticed however, that if the files are in a folder, they will copy to the smb share without a problem. I can then move them out of the folder in the SMB share, delete them, etc. I can also create an empty folder on the share. The only thing I can't seem to do is copy up a regular file. I get this same error message. I have read that it may be a bug in 10.6.3? But curious is other tyes of NAS devices have a similar behavior...

I would like to send contacts via wireless in vcf format in an e-mail. iPhone doesn't even see the attachment. Is there a special file contact type for iphone?

    I must be more specific:
I am attempting to send a vcf from a Windows Computer using Outlook to another Email account that syncs with an iPhone. When I read the e-mail on the iPhone, I can't see the vcf file. But I can see the contact on outlook as a VCF.

  • AP3 collaboration, referenced files on external RAID

We are a small photo-studio with three photographers working together.
    Here's how we work now:
    - we import into AP3, unreferenced.
    - when we finish the project we export as new Library and save it to an external RAID-solution (Synology) for all to have access to the project(s)
    problems with this:
The weight of the exported projects, hence the time to copy and import
what we would like to do:
    - use referenced for the RAW images
    - keep these on a shared drive
    - pass around projects which weigh less and speed up the process
Will the Libraries pick up the correct referenced files after importing them into each users Library or after opening them as a stand-alone Libary?
    Any problems we can expect?
Any good references or help on the subject is welcome and appreciated.
    many thanks
    Henk

Yes it may work but also yes you can expect problems. Aperture is a single-user application not designed for the collaborative workflow you describe.
Apple badly needs a pro single-user laptop/desktop Apple-supported synch workflow. Badly needed and requested since v1. Here we are years later still dealing with workarounds, some flaky. Filemaker, Apple's other database app, has had this capability for decades.
Hopefully other folks will post solutions that may work, but remember that multi-user workarounds of this single-user app are prone to being flaky. Plan accordingly, including most importantly to back up original image files on and off site prior to import into Aperture or any other images management app.
    Good luck!

My 2nd generation Airport Extreme very slow via wireless (5 and belows mbps) wired over 20. Please help! What could it be?

It is very possible that you may have some form of Wi-Fi interference nearby that is preventing your AEBSn from providing a clean RF signal on the 2.4 GHz band.
I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like iStumbler, or AirRadar to determine potential areas of interference, and then, try to either eliminate or significantly reduce them where possible.

  • How can I connect to a NAS via internet

I've been searching the forum for an answer and have found close but not quite. I'm running a Macbook on Snow leopard as is a friend that I am now working with. She (or rather, her husband) also has a NAS connected via a wireless router on a home network. We would like to load the files that we are both working from on the NAS so we are working from one set of master files. We both move around alot (btween Fance & Italy). Now, I can access the NAS easily from her computer on their network - the Mac picked it up automatically but now that I'm home, I can't seem to find it on my computer. I've tried putting the IP address of the NAS into Safari - error message, server not responding. I've also tried to connect to server via afp - same thing
My question is: how can we access the NAS via the internet? Does her husband have to specifically creat an account on the thing for me? I'm at a loss here as I have no experience of NAS devices.
    Thanks in advance

The problem here is that you do not have direct access to items on their LAN. What you need to do is set up port forwarding on their router so that requests on whatever port the NAS uses are forwarded to the NAS from the router. The other way (probably more secure) to do it would be to set up virtual private networking (VPN) so that you can connect to their entire LAN as if you were part of it while actually on the Internet. The router would have to support this of course.
    Best of luck.

  • Regarding Artwork and managing of iTunes Movie files on a NAS Drive

My Macbook hard drive was virtually full so like many other people in my situation I made space by moving my Movies and TV folders from iTunes media to a NAS networked hard drive connected to my network router at home.  That's great, freed up loads of space and when I'm home my iTunes wirelessly finds it and can even stream the content via my Apple TV.  My question now though is how do I add artwork to movie files that I have ripped from my DVD's?  I've been going into the info pane and adding artwork as I normally do and clicking ok, but then nothing changes.  It's as if iTunes cannot write the artwork image to the file on the NAS drive, or connect the thumbnail to it.
This has led me to question how do I now add a new movie file to my iTunes if the folder is located on a NAS drive now.  I also normally add a movie file to my iTunes library and then amend it's metadata i.e. the video type (movie/TV Shows), add artwork etc.  My concern is that I'm not sure how to add more files and also once I do I cannot seem to amend the metadata.
Does anyone have experience in this and can they explain how best to do it.

I have a similar setup with an iMac and media library on a TC and can add some converted movies but not all and changes to metadata don't save.  Files aren't hidden somewhere in Home movies.  I thought it was a format issue so switched to m4v Apple format and found that i can add some to the library but not others.  Any that do add, don't take changes to the metadata - no error message, just doesn't process.  Interestingly, I recently upgrades from a Windows pc to the Mac and under Windows it worked perfectly!

  • Aperture 3 doesn't see Network Drive that holds masters of referenced files

    Hi
I created a new referenced library with about 35000 images and for the few days it worked fine. The Referenced files are located on a Drobo that is connected to My Mac OS X server. I connect to it Via AFP.
About 2 days ago, I opened the library and the library does not see the referenced files. When I choose a file and select 'Locate referenced Files from the File menu, the locate window pops up and it shows the Drobo as being offline, even though I have mounted it, and outside of Aperture, I can access it and use it - it is definitely mounted. the "Mount" button is greyed out in the Locate referenced files window, and when I select the file using the file browser in this window, which I am able to do even though Aperture Shows the Drobo as Offline Volume Status section above, the "reconnect button remains greyed out.
I have rebuilt the library, rebooted the server, unmounted and remounted the Drobo, and no matter what I do, it does not see the referenced files.
Can anyone help me recoonect these files?

I am having the exact same problem in Aperture 3.0.2. Aperture says that 529 files in a particular library are "offline" when they are on a mounted volume. The external volume on which they reside is very much ONLINE despite the fact that Aperture says it is offline.
In fact that same volume shows up in the bottom half of the window that pops up when you select the files in Aperture and choose "Locate referenced files". I was able to successfully reconnect several thousand files by simply navigating to the files that Aperture identified as "offline" in the bottom window. But these 529 (out of a total of 4266) won't reconnect and in the bottom window the pixel dimensions for the file I'm trying to reconnect are missing. If I navigate to the files in the Finder the pixel dimensions are shown. I was able to reimport some of the so-called "offline" files on the "offline" volume. There were originally 572 that would not reconnect, and I reimported 43 of them, leaving me with 529 that should be connected, but aren't.
Last week I spent several hours on the phone with the tech support team at Apple, but they so far have been unable to help me solve this problem. I could just reimport the files, but then would have to lift and stamp adjustments for all 529 files and get rid of the "offline" masters. One of the tech support people was going to research whether it might be possible to somehow do a "force reconnect", but hasn't gotten back to me about this.
The external volume on which these files reside is an OWC Qx2 which is a 4.5 GB Raid 5 connected via firewire 800. In addition to being completely accessible outside of Aperture, I have run Disk Utility on it, and it verifies.
I am hoping that Apple will come up with a fix for this problem soon.

  • HP 3050 - Cant Connect To Anything Via Wireless

I am very baffled as to what is going on this is how my computers are connected....
My main PC is connected to my router via an ethernet cable
My 2 laptops are connected via wireless
They arn't in a network so to speak as in they see and share files they just use the router to connect to the internet now my PC I got is working fine so it sends info to the router via Ethernet and bang printer prints via wireless, Now for my laptop I installed the CD software V 22.5.0 according to the disc. I went through the set-up and wanted to connect wireless so I followed the screen prompts used the USB cable to install device drivers and though the next screen see's my printer and network name it will not connect at all says it cant find it to actually connect to it.
I turned off the windows firewall on the laptop thinking that could be it but no I even went into the screen where I can manually type the IP address of the printer and it still wont find and connect to it, for router is a Netgear DGN2000 with the latest firmware I have set it up so that all the hardware I know thats connected has a IP address reserved so everything gets the same address all the time.
I even tried to get into the printer via IP address in IE9 but it wont even connect to it  even searching in Add Printer it wont see my model even though the software is installed unless I keep it connected via USB to keep drivers on
Can anyone help because I have seriously tried for days
    This question was solved.

    Hi,
That means nothing wrong with "seeing" each other (asuming the printer can also ping the laptop). I'm chatting with my network people now (using communicator). Hope he can have some thoughts. I will update this.
Updated: He was saying why you selected to use USB to install on laptops ( I followed the screen prompts used the USB cable to install device drivers ) ? You need that printer driver and its wireless utility. Should be on the CD.

Hi, I want to use my Capsule just as a back up via wireless. How do I set this up without connecting it with an ethernet cable to either a router or the iMac??

I misunderstood what Time Capsule is and had hoped for a wireless backup device that didn't have to be connected to the router.
The TC is a wireless backup device.. it does not need to be connected to the main router..
The problem is the computer.. not the TC.. the computer has only one wireless card.. if your current internet is by wireless.. then you must choose.. internet or backup.
But my other suggestion will work.. get a wireless USB stick compatible with Mac OS.. there are plenty and cheap.. since you are in the same room as the TC they will work fine.. plug it in and load the driver.. taint hard.
You should do the first backup by ethernet though.. wireless is too slow.. once you have that, you will do fine.
Search ebay for wireless n usb.. Mac compatible..
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-EDUP-Mini-Wireless-11N-300M-USB-LAN-Card-WiFi-Adapte r-Nano-Card-Soft-AP-/150864362939?pt=US_USB_Wi_Fi_Adapters_Dongles&hash=item2320 377dbb#ht_3553wt_1165
As you can see.. they are getting smaller and neater.
I have no idea if it works .. haven't tried one.. but I have used USB wireless stick on the Mac to overcome this issue.
You will need to set static IP .. not hard but you need to set specifics if you do buy one post again for the setup.

  • Can I hook up a NAS via Fibre Channel?

I am building a Linux NAS to be accessed by my Macs. I've purchased fibre cards for all of my macs, an LSI fibre card for my Linux machine, and a McData 4400 fibre switch. I'm trying to configure my fibre network so I can share files from my NAS. I've got the fabric set up, but everything that I read is talking about using SAN software to connect to a SAN, not a NAS. I can't find any information at all on how to do what I want to do, or whether or not it's possible. Can someone please help me figure out how to set up this Fibre Channel network, or at least figure out if it's possible or not? Thank you!
    -Ryan

Is what you want technically possible? Probably.
In an earlier era, you could have a network or an image scanner or other devices connected to a host via SCSI; via a storage bus. There was all manner of odd SCSI-connected gear. (Think of SCSI as expensive multi-host USB with big expensive cables and with expensive peripheral devices, and you'll have the general idea. And FWIW, SCSI is the underpinnings of USB.)
You would end up writing a whole lot of driver code for the devices and hosts you have, too.
Which is where folks end up with commercial SAN solutions, or with NAS solutions, and not with using a SAN as a network.
The various Fibre Channel controller vendors discussed but never seemed to have sorted out the network interface designs for their FC controllers.
If you want to roll your own storage arrays akin to the [Apple Xsan|http://www.apple.com/xsan> or the HP [MSA|http://h18000.www1.hp.com/storage/diskstorage/msa_diskarrays/sanarrays/index.html] or [EVA|http://h18000.www1.hp.com/storage/diskstorage/eva_diskarrays/evaarrays/index.html] SAN arrays, well, have at. You'll likely end up needing to write host disk drivers, as well as the firmware within the SAN controller. Networking drivers might be a bit more tricky; I haven't looked at those device interfaces in a while, and you'd need to tie those drivers into the host network stacks. Once you have some or all of that working, then the hosts can see the block storage out on the SAN. If you need sharing, you'll need to sort out a cluster or SAN file system to run atop the block storage or atop the network connection you've built; a file system that can coordinate distributed access.
Possible? Sure. On a budget? Probably not.

Here's a bit of optional background on my situation:
My tidy little home network consists of two computers (imac Intel Core Duo and a Mac Book Pro) and airport extreem router.  I also have a maxtor HD wired to the imac via fire wire for time machine backup.   The imac is the primary file storage location and I share the home folder and sub-folders to the mac book pro with RW access to the files.  There is not enough disk space on the imac to store all the files so I have my pictures stored on my macbook pro.
OK so now I have several questions I'm hoping you can help me with moving all my files to the NAS.
Is the NAS the right approach or do I need a server.
How can I get the Home folder to recognize or essentially sit on the NAS?  The alternative (which I do with my macbook pro) is to point the user to the remote drive my configuring the side bar links to the external drive.  I appreciate your advice here. I also know there are a bunch of details regarding moving my itunes and photo library which is a separate topic.
How do I handle file permissions with multiple users?  Are there issues with a folder created by one user on the imac, limiting RW access by the macbook pro user?
Regarding the NAS,  if I get a 2TB (two disk drive) NAS, I assume I can create two partitions (one for each drive) and have one for storage and another for time machine backup.  Any advice here.
    Thank you,

Remove the hard drive and get one of these USB hard drive adapters. http://tinyurl.com/a5l2htj Then plug the adapter into your iMac to see/retrieve the files.
     Cheers, Tom

  • Can´t edit or trash files on my NAS – (Error code -36)

I have all my files on a NAS. I have got a problem - I can´t trash any of the files via finder (tried Mac OS X 10.7 and 10.5). When I try I get this message: "The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “FILENAME” can’t be read or written. (Error code -36)"
I can change name on files, I can open, but not edit. I can put new files on the share and make copies, but can´t trash och edit files. I have searched for a solution but haven´t found anything that works.
I can via the nas own Web file Manager trash files but not from finder.
If I open an rtf-file, it says that it is locked in the titlearea, but its not locked if I shows "info" on that file in finder.
I can download any file of the nas to edit in the mac but not as long as it´s on the nas-share...
    Please help... I´m geeting desperate...

    Update:
I have found what makes the problem appear, If I configure the Qnap to not "Enable Network Recycle Bin", then everything works, but when activated same problem. I have tried everything with access rights, but nothing solves the problem when Network Recycle Bin is activated. This is strange because before I reformated the drive to begin from scratch this worked…
Update 2: A new firmware 3.6.0 was released today - Installed it and it fixed the problem!
