Referenced library on internal SSD boot/applications drive?

I have a referenced library, the masters are on an external drive; right now the library is on another external drive (mini, so most everything is on external drives via firewire 800). I'm swapping in an OCZ SSD to use for my boot/applications drive, together with a few GB's of documents that I frequently use. Taking advantage of the weekend to set up a drive to clone on to the SSD after I install it.
Any advantage to moving my library over to the internal SSD?
As a side question - my library has expanded to about 3 G Bytes. Is there a procedure to "compact" the library, maybe it has accumulated useless data between importing, deleting, making changes and then discarding versions.

I have moved my entire homefolder (incl. the Aperture library) to the SSD bootdrive in a raid0 setup. While the overall experience is definitely a lot snappier, I didn't find my workflow much faster than it was before with respect to Aperture. I guess most of the time I'm fiddling around with image-edits that hardly involves HD access.

Installing Snow Leopard on New Internal SSD (without External drive)

All,
I have been searching and searching for a sufficient answer for this question, but have come up short thusfar. So any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.
Basically I have an early 2009 MacBook Air (RevB) with a 128 GB HDD (not SSD). It has been painfully slow the past few months, and with the move to SSD for the new Air's - I've decided to swap my older HD for a new 64GB RunCore SSD (using the online guide from iFixit). However, as the MacBook Air inherently has no DVD drive - and the new HD will completely blank and not allow for the DVD Sharing to take place, I'm a bit stuck.
Here's where the complication sets in - I do not have (and would really rather not purchase) an external Superdrive or external DVD drive just for this one process. However, I do have a MacBook Pro that I would like to use to install Snow Leopard onto the new blank internal SSD.
Finally, I would also like to install Snow Leopard cleanly (i.e. not cloning my existing MacBook Air HD first).
Therefore, my BIG question (in three parts is:
1) Can I install Snow Leopard onto the new internal SSD before I install the new SSD itself into the MacBook Air (i.e. the new internal SSD comes with an external enclosure to presumably allow for cloning prior to installation). Therefore, can I just install Snow Leopard from my MBP's Superdrive to the new SSD using the new SSD + Enclosure as an external HD?
2) When complete, and then installed in the MacBook Air, will the new internal SSD boot correctly?
3) Finally what formats should I go for (GUID, Journalled, etc.) - or is that not really applicable in this case?
Hopefully that all makes sense...?

Okay just copied this from a tutorial on how to do it.
*OSX 10.6 method for bootable USB key install*
Insert your retail DVD into drive.
Plug in usb key. I recommend getting at least a 16gig drive so you don’t run into capacity issues.
Open Disk Utitlity. Locatied in Applocations/Utitilties/DiskUtitily.app
Partition the USB drive and select GUID in the options so it will be bootable on a Mac.
Select restore and drag the image of the DVD on the left into the input path.
Drag the USB drive into the destination drive.
Click the restore button.
Sit back and relax cause you will be waiting for about 20-30 mins for the key to be formatted properly.

Using existing 1Tb Home Folder from new SSD boot drive

So, I am completely stuck.
My plan;
Mac Pro (2008) with RAID card. 4x750Gb drives as RAID5, Home Folder is resident there at 1.25Tb.
Purchased 160Gb SSD. Performed clean install of 10.6.7 on it connected by e-SATA.
Migrated Applications. Booted into SSD; Used Advanced Users from System Preferences to point at original Home Folder on RAID.
My result ;-)
50% success but many of the sub folders in ~Library are locked with permissions. Preferences, Mail etc.
Everything is 100% OK when I boot from the original Raid (which is great as a fallback)
My hope;
That there is some way that the original Home Folder would be 100% fine when referenced from the new SSD boot drive.
£1,000,000 to the first MacWiz to help me solve this... (joking about the £1,000,000 but I would be very, very grateful indeed)

I just went through a similar issue and solved it with a little persistance.
Follow these steps:
1) All you need to do is cmd + i or "get info" on the folders you want access to
2) in the bottom right of the window that pops up click the small padlock symbol
3) enter your password (the login password for you mac) to "authenticate"
4) Click the arrow by "sharing and permissions" to open that drop down
5) click the + button in the bottom left corner
6) in the new window that pops up click administrator or your specific user (both work fine)
7) when it adds that user click the "privilege" and choose Read & Write
Hey presto, when you refresh the finder window the folder will be accessilble!!!

IPhoto Referenced Library: repair aliases

Hello everyone, I have an iphoto referenced library of about 58 thousand pictures, I have the originals stored on a 1TB lacie hard drive ("castor") connected through firewire 800. Tonight I was doing some funny stuff in order to get that drive clean and empty for re-partitioning (since disk utility wound't let me erase a couple of mac journaled partitions I didn't need anymore without reformatting the whole volume), so I took all the pictures, documents, applications, and a mac os tiger (from which I boot sometimes) to another daisy chained 1TB lacie (pollux) and once I was done, back to it's original home ("castor"), I thought that, even formatted, it would keep it's original path, but may be it didn't for when I tried to open my library all of the files where missing. There were only thumbnails and once at full screen it would ask me for the current location of the picture and if canceled, it would show just a huge exclamation mark.
I remade some of those aliases manually but there are 58,000 + files. So I am looking for a clever solution to get all those aliases fixed automatically without having to re-import all the folders containing my pictures again (not yet).
A few days ago I had a rather similar problem with iMovie which I solved by following a tutorial; editing the project's binary file by turning it into html via terminal and then modifying it with the correct location of the files. I hope there might be some trick like this for my mess. I would guess all of the ilife applications have a similar architecture and way to work.
I will post back if I find any fix for others to learn. Meanwhile, thanks in advance for your useful help and sorry for my english, I am Mexican... greetings! .

This man affirms that by double clicking in one of the files and manually finding it's location when prompted (as expected in iTunes) was able to regain the order of his library.
And in http://thedigitalstory.com/2010/05/reconnecting_master.html this function appears to be more reliable and may be I am upgrading to Aperture now.
My "referenced videos" iphoto library seems to be working quite well, even though it passed through the same odyssey of getting out and back to my external hard drive, and it's also within an intricate directory structure.
I certainly have the need of a referenced library since my computer's hard drive is laptop-size and therefore it can't run as fast for browsing 4 years of amateur digital photography, so I think there's no workaround about that, in fact it is a pretty amazing feature.
Meanwhile I managed to solve it using automator: renaming folders, making aliases, and replacing the dead ones with these. The only problem is that the aliases made by automator which uses (I think) a similar method as Finder for creating aliases is that these links occupy much more hard disk space that the ones generated by iPhoto. I am sure I read on some other post that I can get into the iPhoto application package and mess around with its vital files to get the aliases repaired, in a similar fashion as I did to iMovie. How do i transfer some files and applications to and make my ssd a bootable drive

I have a mbp 2009. i'm using the owc data doubler - installing 250gb ssd and keeping my 250 HDD. I want to transfer some apps and files from the HDD to the SSD and make the SSD the bootable drive. I'm not too familiar with teh inner-workings, so i'd appreciate a step-by-step instruction

First - if you want to have the SSD as your boot drive, put it in your hard drive bay and put your hard drive in the optical bay. MacBook Pros 'expect' the boot drive to be in the main bay - not the secondary bay.
After you've made the swap, hold down the option key whilst booting and select your hard drive to start up. Once you've booted, use Disk Utility to format the SSD ("Mac OS Extended (Journaled)") with a single GUID partition. Now you'll be ready to start moving things around.
The best thing you can do - since the HD and the SSD are the same size - is simply to use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your 'old' drive to the SSD. Then you can boot from the SSD, erase (reformat) your hard drive and then move any files on the SSD that you want on your HD. If I were you, I would try to keep most of your music, photos & other docs on the HD and your applications, etc., on the SSD. DO NOT just move your entire user directory to the HD as there are likely some files that are expected to be found in your user folder (the user Library, etc.).

Procedure for SSD boot drive in Mac Pro?

I just purchased a 115GB SSD that I want to use as the boot drive in my Mac Pro running OS 10.6.8. I've read several articles about how to set this up but none seem to be working for me. On the SSD boot drive I want only the essentials: OS, Home Folder, Apps. Everything else (docs, downloads, music, photos, movies, etc.) needs to go on my 1TB storage HD. The problem I'm having using Carbon Cloner and Super Duper to copy the OS, HF and apps to the SSD is they're copying too much data, filling up the SSD with non-essentials (there should only be about 90GB of data being copied but much more seems to be transferred). I can't seem to lean-down what's being moved. Would doing a new install with the Snow Leopard DVD and then copying over only the essential files/folders with Migration Assistant be better, more specific?
Has anyone perfected this procedure, and can give me step-by-step instructions? All help is greatly appreciated!

There are dozens and dozens of threads, MPG, MacRumors and elsewhere.
don't move anything from "home" except the bare essential ~/Library (1GB at most) with CCC and deelect everything else. That should get you down to size.
Before you bought I hope you asdded up the /applications and good estimate. most users can get an OS/apps into 60GB or less (the max I would want to see on SSD you have) FCP and some others or if you hae a lot of large apps - some allow for installing in alternate locations as well as into system/library.
Some - there are always some - have had trouble cloning. Some had trouble with installing, too. Can't win for losing at every turn sometimes.

Upgrading my intel iMac to internal SSD and running 1TB external drive from firewire 800 for mass storage while still using a second external drive for backups...my goal-speed with a SSD, to still have 1TB of room for everything i have now..possible?

I seem to kill HD's every two years...the last two i've installed were WD Caviar Black 1TB 7200rpm 3.5" drives. The speed gains over stock drives have been remarkable. I don't blame the drives for the failures, my machines are up and running 16 hours a day, every day, year round. They die from 'mileage' so to speak...i assume...there's no viral acvtivity or questionable downloads to gunk things up...just lots of work.
I have my third new drive ready to install in my intel based iMac...but i've had a thought...I want to install a SSD in my iMac for the speed gain (and recent price drops)...for standard storage i want to use this new WD Caviar Black 1TB in an external drive bay and connect via firewire 800 for storing everything except the OS and my most commonly used software...am i crazy? will the firewire 800 external drive negate the speed gained with an internal SSD??
I have four iMacs in my office, and one at home. I buy second hand and install new drives and boost memory. I'm going to do this on my 'home' machine...if it works out well i want to upgrade the other three this way...but first i need to know if i'm just dreaming, or will it really make a difference? or even possible??

The SSD gives great bootup and Application launch speed. I think it also speeds up the video rendering a bit, I do all that on the SSD and then move the finished project to the external drives. As far as the speed for the external drives they are quick enough for viewing video and the file transfer rate is good. I had initially put the SSD into an external cradle (FW800) and the system was faster than on the internal drive. I only got a 1.5GBs SATA drive, perhaps yours could benefit from the 3GBs. I know the 6GBs would be too fast and costs a lot more, even the MacPros need special hookups to make use of the 6GBs.

Macbook Pro Retina doesn't see internal SSD drive

I have a problem with my Macbook Pro Retina 13(late 2012). Yesterday I've done clean install of Yosemite. Everything worked fine, and I wanted to restore my files using Time Machine. So I restarted it (command +R), plugged in my extertal hard drive, turned on TM restore option and chose my SSD drive as a place to install. Mac asked me to enter password for the SSD (default filevault2 in yosemite), I entered the password, system accepted it and then something went wrong. System told me to restart mac and try again. I restarted it, and did like previous but this time, my mac stopped to see his internal SSD drive. System was asking where to install yosemite form Time Machine and there were no drive to choose. I turned on disc utility, and I see my SSD drive there but I can't erase it, or unlock (picture in appendage). I can only verify disc and it shows that drive is fine. I've tried to install Yosemite on my external drive and boot from there,to unlock SSD in settings(I've chose my Ex. drive as a place to install Yosemite) but it didn't work. I even tried internet recovery (command+option+R) but I didn't help, SSD drive was still useless.
I think my SSD is still locked, but I don't know how to unlock it now. I don't need to use Time Machine anymore(I have my files in other drive too). It can be clean install but please, can somebody tell me what to do? I have exams this week and really need a computer :<

Start your mac up by holding the alt key. That is boot from function.
If its empty then you might have a hard drive issue. Due to your hard drive being picked up but not the partition on the drive. This will most probably be a OS X reinstall.
Erase the drive and reinstall the OS X or run a recovery mode.

Living with a small SSD Boot Drive on New Pro??? Migration?

Hi Folks, I am seriously considering moving to a new mac pro from my 2008 tower. Aside from peripheral issues, my main concern is how to use the smaller SSD boot drive vs. my now current 2T drive? I've been a mac user since 1985 and my user folder with gigs of mail, documents, pictures (iPhoto and Aperture) and videos, etc., plus my application folder, is much larger than a 512 SSD. I now use a 3T drive as a separate movie/video FinalCut drive, so I've stored that separately. It just seems that if I try to do a migration of my current mac to a new one, I'm going to be creating major headaches and problems.
Before I buy something like that, I need to have a good strategy for a move.

You should try your cyrrent system and clone the OS to a 250GB SSD and 2-3TB data drive

The 2600xt really should have been retured already and confivurd your system with 16GB RAM or more

The nMP is faster but it still needs work and yiurs isn't dead

ITunes 10 stalls on playback with Library on USB (2 and 3), OS X 10.8.2 2.6 GHz intel i7, MP3 320 kbps, playback is fine using internal SSD...

All this power in a brand new mac-mini.. and iTunes is constantly stalling playback every 1 - 5 minutes (only when the iTunes Library is on external drives)..
(1 - 3 second silence interrupting playback then continuing...)

Is there an Apple certified technique to prevent disk spin down ?
Energy Saver control panel indicates that "Put hard disks to sleep when possible..." is unchecked..
Maybe iTunes could simply buffer larger sizes of the file, or the whole file.
(I have enough RAM to hold my entire 3 gig Library..)
(if the stall occurred only in between songs that would be acceptable)
Can we get an iTunes patch for this ???

Removed the 5 IOFirewire files removed from System/Library/Extensions and rebooted. Startup up within seconds!
Haven't used the firewire in a while, but I don't recall having any issues with it previously.
This worked, so I'm happy. Hopefully it sticks.

How to move iPhoto Library from internal drive to ext. drive?

If someome can assist me with the procedure on how to move my iphoto library from my internal drive to external drive, so that I can keep and access all my iphoto library files primarily from the external drive. In addition I would also like to know once the process has been completed if it would be safe to delete the internal iphoto library? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

First and foremost, before you begin, make sure you're doing some sort of backup of those photos and your systems. Preferably with Time Machine to some sort of external drive (besides the one that will store the photos) or Time Capsule.
Then you can follow these steps:
1) Make sure the external drive is formatted for the Mac. You can use Disk Utility (applications-->utilities) and select the drive to find out if it's HFS Extended format.
2) Quit iPhoto, then drag the iPhoto library onto the eternal drive and let it copy.
3) Once it's done copying, hold down the Option key and click to launch iPhoto, it will ask you to select an iphoto library and you would choose the one on the external drive.
4) You're safe to delete the original iPhoto Library from there.. however I still recommend you've made extra sure to back your stuff up.

Can't partition my internal SSD drive

Hello,
After some trouble with mail drop, my mac has frozen, i forced the restart but it could not boot on my drive anymore.
I started in recovery mode and tried to repair with the last backup but the drive could not be unmounted.
I unmounted the drive with diskutil in command line using the force option.
Since then, I can't partition/erase my internal SSD drive anymore, i have tried all format but i always get this error (in french) : "Le balayage des données du volume afin d'empêcher de futures recherches accidentelles a échoué".
How can i erase and partition this drive in order to reinstall Yosemite ?

Did that -- I get a window with three tabs, General, Exceptions, Advanced. Exceptions has a long list, which includes Bonjour, which is checked. But I don't see any list of Bonjour Advertised Services and nothing about CD.DVD anywhere I've looked.
Next possible step??? (I really appreciate all the effort you're putting into this!)

Thunderbolt with Pegasus R4 heavily slows down boot performance of internal SSD

After connecting a Promise Pegasus R4 Raid with a Thunderbolt cable, my Mac Book Pro 2011 (Snow Leopard) needs about 60(!) seconds longer to boot from the internal SSD. Without the Raid connected, my MacBook Pro needs about 20 seconds to boot. When I press the power button, the display of the MBP is more than 20 seconds black before the bootsequece starts. I shorly can hear the CD drive beeing checked after pressing the power button - as usual. The RAID is the only periphal connected via Thunderbolt. No softwareupdates are available. Raid and SSD are pretty fast after the system booted. Is this behavior normal?

Can I move an SSD Boot Drive from a Mac Pro 1,1 to a newer 5,1?

I have a MacPro 1,1 (2 x dual core Xeon, 3.0 GHZ) with 8GB RAM and updated with an ATI 5770 video card, driving a 27" Cinema display; I'm running OSX 10.7.5. There's an SSD boot/OS/App drive, and the data is on a secondary hard drive with backup to the data on an identical third drive. Because it's time to update (I've had this flawless machine for nearly 4 years but need one with 64-bit capability) I've arranged to buy a 2010 Mac Pro 5,1, also with a 5770 card. I don't need the hard drives that are in that "new" one. I would like to just swap the three drives I have in the old one, and put them in the new box. Will I encounter any problems?

There are two types of base Systems:
a) "shipped in the box" with a specific model Mac. These will boot only that model, and software Update does not change that capability.
b) "Full Retail" or "Purchased" (even for $0). These will boot any appropriate Mac, because they contain "Drivers for every appropriate Mac."
Your 10.7 computer shipped with software much older, so I presume you purchased that 10.7, and would therefore expect it to boot any appropriate model Mac.
"A Mac can generally boot software no OLDER than what it originally shipped with."

This table show that any build after 10.6.4 (custom) should work to boot a Mac Pro 5,1 2010.
CAUTION: the last version shipped on a "Full Retail" DVD was 10.6.3, which will NOT boot that Mac directly.
NB> If staying with 10.7, you should check whether you are running 64-bit kernel. If not, a terminal command and a re-Boot will fix that.

I need to work on my pix faster, what is faster to work off of - internal SSD or external thunderbolt drive?

I have an issue deciding what I need to do.
I have purchase a LACIE 30TB NAS with Thunderbolt 2.0 ... my internal SSD is 1TB in my new Mac Pro (2014)
I dont know how photoshop works... if I open the file to work on PS located in the LACIE drive would it be as faster as opening it and modify it on my internal SSD ?
