Referenced masters and automounted filesystems in Aperture 2.1

Folks,
I've recently set up an automount for an nfs share from my raid for use in storing masters for my aperture library. Unfortunately, Aperture doesn't seem to be fully prepared for automounted filesystems. Here's the behavior I've noticed:
Scenario #1:
Create an automount that mounts the nfs share under the /Volumes directory using the Directory Utility in Leopard.
When I do this, and 'relocate masters' for a project, things seem to work acceptably, as I can navigate to the share in the referenced files manager. However, if I exit out of Aperture and immediately restart, Aperture believes the volume is offline. Only after starting the referenced files manager does aperture become aware that the filesystem is indeed mounted and available. This is less than ideal. It defeats the purpose of configuring an automount if I still have to do something special to make the mount available or convince Aperture that the mount is already there.
Scenario #2:
Create the automount using the 'net' option. This mounts the filesystem under /Network/Servers/<hostname>/<share>. This is completely unusable from Aperture as far as I've been able to tell as the referenced file manager can't even navigate to /Network. My initial preference would be to use the net option in the automount configuration, but at this point, I'll take anyone's suggestions as to how to integrate automounted filesystems into Aperture...
So, my question is, does anyone have a suggestion on how to get Aperture 2.1 to play nicely with automounted filesystems under Leopard?

Okay the [fifth|http://www.kbeat.com/Site/Blog/Entries/2008/5/8Everything_you_never_wanted_to_know_about_color_management%2C_part5....html], and final, entry in the blog series is up. I won't for one minute claim to have all the answers to all the printing problems people keep having with Aperture. I can only say that like many of you I began with prints that I was less than thrilled with on my Canon Pro9000 from Aperture. Now, after doing everything I outlined in the five blog entries, I have prints that I'm extremely happy with. They are a close match to my screen, they have deep, rich colors and have really good detail. I really hope some of you, after reading the blog, get better results.

  • Referenced masters and IPTC

Hello, I am evaluating Aperture and playing with the different possibilities.
I'd like to know if, when I am adding IPTC informations, it's possible to update the original master referenced image. I think, in fact, that Aperture only writes in its library and add IPTC only after an export.
Is it instead possible to "sync" the original master image, so that if I open it from - for example - the finder - I see the added IPTC informations?
    Thanks,
    Antonio

i can see why you would want something like that, it's sometimes easier to search for your images with spotlight and keywords than to wait for aperture to open and use its slower search function on the whole library. aperture, however has a philosphy of not changing original master files, probably for some very good reasons. although it would be perfectly possible and easy (i think iview media pro did it that way on the mac) to store the ipct data in the file's resource fork, and thus not changing the original, apple chose not to mess with the file at all. after all, they already write all the info to the database and a series of plist files saved in the library. a third place to write all this, and a place where the user could easily mess up the resource fork would simply complicate things.
in aperture 2 there is a way to export your masters with the info embedded into the file, and not an xmp sidecar. you could export your masters with iptc data, delete them from the library and reimport them referenced, but there would be no way to sync the info without repeating this step and you would lose all your image edits along the way.

  • Backing up Referenced Masters

Would like some advice on what you consider the best approach to backup when using a mix of Reference Masters and Managed Masters in the library.
My understanding is that you cant use Vault on Referenced Masters and cant use Time Machine either.
    Your advice is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    LArry

Just to be clear, all edits and adjustments, along with thumbnails and previews, regardless of managed or reference masters, are stored in Aperture Library.
Just use Vault to backup your Aperture Library (that has managed masters and adjustments, previews and thumbnails). Your referenced master, simply needs to be backed up by duplicating the files on another drive than where is resides. I simply save may referenced masters on two separate external drives when I read them off the card on exactly same folder/directory structure. If you get a RAID drive (other than RAID 0), it will do this for you automatically.
Many people use multiple Ap Library and is not an issue, but not typically for the reason you've brought up. Rather, one for business and another for personal, or one each for major clients.
    Cheers

  • Freeing up laptop HD - referenced masters

I'm working with a large project of my India trip as a I travel. I have it sub-divided into albums based on different places I've visited as I visit them (chronologically).
I'm working on my laptop so space is limited and I now want to delete some of the initial referenced masters and externally edited versions. Is relocate masters the correct way to do this? And what about relocating externally edited versions? As I'm on a slow system, I still use PS for editing.
I backup my entire system to two external FW drives using CCC. So I already have 'relocated masters' on external storage. So all I really want to do is delete the masters/externally edited files on my laptop but I don't want to cause a break in Aperture's links. Is there a way to take advantage of these external drive files in the whole relocating/reconnecting process? Or do I need to relocate separately?
One possible solution I can think of: Would moving the referenced masters and externally edited images to the trash and then use Manage Referenced Files to point the broken links to the equivalent images in one of my external drives be sensible? And what about the other backup drive? If the external drive whose images the aplibrary now links to failed, could I then use Manage Referenced Files to restore the path to the other backups on my second external drive?
    Thanks for any help,
    Ross

I think you're saying you've got the images both on your internal drive as managed and on external storage. You want to delete the managed images on your internal drive, and use the images on the external drives. If I have that right, and assuming you've made all the adjustments to the images that are managed, and wish to keep those adjustments, then your best bet is to actually delete the images on the external drive then relocate your masters from your library to the external drive. That way you'll get them off your internal HD, keep all your current adjustments, and eliminate duplicates.
As I reread your post I'm not positive I understand what you're trying to do. You can delete referenced images from within Aperture and check the box to delete the masters. This will move your images no matter where they are to the trash. If you've then got them someplace else, edited with PS, you can import those.

  • Importing Masters and Versions from iPhoto

Is it possible to import both Masters and the associated Adjusted Versions from iPhoto into Aperture 3?
The manual tells how to import the masters into the Aperture library but does not seem to tell how to import the corresponding versions adjusted in iPhoto.

In iPhoto all images are masters in a sense. When you adjusted an image in iPhoto a duplicate image was made and the adjustments were done to the duplicate giving you two separate files.
When you import your iPhoto library into Aperture these two files (the original and the adjusted image) are two separate files as far as Aperture is concerned. Aperture will keep them together and apply keywords to each to help you sort it all out once you running the Aperture library but they will not have the same master version relationship that masters and versions created in Aperture have.
So when you import your iPhoto library all images will come over, you don't need to do anything special to get the adjusted images.

  • My 3.4.5 has ~ 35000 jpg masters.  I have set aperture not to create previews on import and have ensured "maintain previews" is not ticked.  Every time I start aperture it insists on creating previews for ~ 4300 images. Why?

Having had the previews created I selected all photos and "delete previews".  It did this quickly and no more previews being created.  Once aperture is closed and then re-opened aperture immediately sets about creating the previews for the same photos.  I don't understand why this should be happening.
This is occuring on my Mackbook Air (Aug 2012) which has 256 GB storage. I am fast running out of space as I am using "Managed Masters".  I intend to make the masters referenced by relocating them to an external HDD but before doing this would like to clear up this problem first. I keep my Vault on the external HDD and have Time Machine and Time Capsule.  When I have relocated the masters to the external HDD I intend that TM backs the external HDD to the TC.  I tink that I will use the second partition on the external HDD for Carbon Copy Cloner to back up the Mackbook Air.
Any help or advice warmly welcomed.

    Frank
    Many thanks for your input.
Following your advice I have selected all the projects individually and checked the status of Mantain Previews.  Some were indeed marked up for Mantail Preview so I have unmarked them.
I have also selected Photos and deleted  previews and also repeated this for My Projects.
Checking the Get Info for the Preview folder in Aperture Library in Finder this now tells me that I have zero bytes for 564 items.
Close and then reopen Aperture and it regenerates these564 previews in the blink of an eye.  I haven't been able to locate these photos yet.  I know there are about 120 in facebook and 10 in photostream but dont know where the rest are.
It seems the issue is not with Aperture but with myself and not understanding Aperture sufficiently well
Do you see the problem this way?

  • Aperture 3 Backing Up Referenced Masters

I am trying to develop my workflow better.
I shoot images into the field and download them to my laptop. I then transfer them back to my iMac when I get home. I use Aperture 3 for my pictures.
In Aperture, I have all of my files referenced to a external drive. I want to back these photos up overnight using a Drobo or Synology NAS drive.
Does anyone have any experience on which would be better?
I could also implement a workflow in which the files will be referenced on the Drobo or NAS and then backed up overnight. I will be backing up the referenced just in case something were to happen to it.
    Anyone have opinions on this?

    Aperture 3 added a "Trash".
The deleted versions go into the trash, and you have to empty the trash to truly delete them. At this point it will ask if you want to delete the referenced masters as well.
As a pro, I'd rather not have a trash... But oh well, gotta appease the newbies.

  • Aperture thinks a project has offline referenced masters - but it doesn't!

I've just been consolidating two Aperture libraries by exporting projects from one library and importing them into another. For the most part this has gone smoothly, but in one project all the images have the little badge with the red slash through it, to indicate that the referenced masters are offline.
But they're not! The project itself is 2.2 GB - so all the photos are actually in it - and when I click 'consolidate masters' for that project, Aperture tells me there are no referenced masters for this project. For every image that's missing a master (if that makes sense) there's a version that's NOT missing a master. So the data's there and I can work with the image - I'm just a bit worried about making radical moves without knowing exactly what's going on
I've tried deleting the project and reimporting it, but to no avail - also, when I delete the project, it tells me referenced masters are offline and can't be moved to the trash.

  • Aperture 3 not deleting referenced masters

I have upgraded to Aperture 3 and unfortunately it does not delete the (newly imported) referenced master file.
Aperture 2 always asked whether I also wanted to delete the master or not, when deleting a version. Aperture 3 has not asked me this question yet. Is this by design or is something not working?
When a version is selected in an album and I select "File>Delete master and all versions" the versions are deleted, but when I go to the folder where the reference masters are located the file is still there. The files are in a folder on my Mac book pro.
    Thanks for any thoughts/solutions

  • Aperture 3 Referenced Masters on a Network Drive

I purchased a Synology Disk Station as my network attached storage solution. I was hoping to have my iTunes media and my Aperture referenced masters on the RAID-enabled network drives. I have had nothing but trouble with iTunes referencing media (extremely slow) so I gave up. Now I am attempting to relocate the Aperture masters to the network drive. According to this article, http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3252 I should definitely not be moving my images to the network drive, as the drive must be formatted as Mac OS Extended, but the Synology Disk Station volumes must be formatted as FAT32. Meanwhile, I did try to relocate some images. One problem I have is that if another user logs in to my iMac before me and mounts the network volume named Sally, when I log in and mount the network volume, the volume name is not the same, it is Sally-1, and Aperture cannot find the referenced masters! I imagine this would happen with any network drive when multiple users are logged into the Imac.
It seems like I have a gigantic network brick that I may be able to use as a glorified Time Machine backup drive, or is there something I can do about this? How does one have networked Mac OS drives? Connecting a drive to an Airport Extreme the only way?

    Re iPhoto on a NAS:
    Still trying to solve this.
iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos. Simply a NAS is not a suitable home for an iPhoto Library.
Workaround: Make a dmg formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and put the Library on that and store it on the NAS.
I think I have to mirror the iTunes solution above,
This involves having iPhoto reference the files on the NAS with the Library on your internal HD or some other volume. I strongly suggest that you don't do that. Unlike Aperture, iPhoto has no tools to reconnect with lost masters (Originals in iPhoto) so should anything go wrong you'll find yourself re-connecting each individual photo in the Library with its Original +one by one+.
but figure out which folders to move
You would need to recreate your Library as a Referenced Library.

  • Aperture 3 - Deleting Referenced Masters in Finder

Here's my scenario: I've recently installed Aperture 3, and imported many iPhoto Libraries into it. I currently have just over 100K photos in a managed library, and performance is slow. I'm switching now to referenced masters to (hopefully) improve performance. I suspect that I have several thousand duplicate photos (could be as high as 10K duplicates because my wife has mangled the iPhoto libraries over the years).
Once I've finished converting from managed masters to referenced masters, my plan was to run a duplicate checking app to delete all the dupes using the finder. The question is - if I delete a referenced master in the finder, will that screw up my Aperture library?
I did attempt to use Duplicate Annihilator on Aperture itself, but because my library is huge it would take about a week to complete, and I can never go seven days without rebooting (I travel a lot). I think because I have so many photos, I need to delete dupes in the finder.
Any advice would be appreciated . . .
    - Nick -

The one drawback to doing it outside of Aperture is that you will be left with a bunch of missing files.
You could setup a filter with *File Status* missing and then if you're sure there isn't anything in the result that is truly missing just delete them Aperture.
Haven't done this myself so can't say for certain it won;t cause problems but I don;t see why it should.

  • Aperture loosing track of referenced masters

I'm having a problem with Aperture loosing track of referenced masters. I have more than 10,000 images in Aperture most of them are stored as referenced masters. I have several projects where "some" of the files have (according to Aperture) gone missing. The images were imported into Aperture at the same time, have always been in their current location (in the same directory), and have not been treated any differently than each other. Looking at the files in the grid view doesn't show any differences in the master file location. Does anyone have any idea how Aperture gets confused?
    thanks
    Rich

It seems to be leopard thing, probably connected to either time machine or spaces. There are a number of threads about this, but no real answers as far as I know.

  • Aperture not seeing referenced masters on Samba share

    Hello all,
I have moved my referenced masters from my laptop to a Samba-mounted RAID server. I go to mount the Samba share and for some reason, Aperture won't see my referenced masters. It also shows the volume as being offline, when I know for a fact it is mounted, and can browse the Aperture masters directory to find each and every master...
Is there any way to get aperture to see these masters?
    Thanks,
    -Noah

OK, this is a long shot, but it happened to me once.
I tried to relocate some managed images to an AFP share which I thought was mounted but wasn't. Because the path that I wanted to relocate to was already loaded I just clicked OK and this is what happened - Aperture created a Folder in /Volumes/ with the name of the AFP volume. So later when I did mount the volume none of my referenced files showed up. This is because while the name on the desktop was correct the Path to it was /Volumes/AFP-share 1/ instead of /Volumes/AFP-share/.
So in short look in /Volumes/ (you can get there by using the Go-->Go to Folder menu in the Finder and typing /Volumes/) and see if there is a folder in there that should not be:-) If there is check to see if there are any images in it and move those to your desktop before deleting the folder.

  • Changed disks in my RAID, Aperture lost all referenced masters.

    I have a G-Speed eS RAID system. I had 4 X 1TB disks.
I decided to change the hard disks to 2TB ones to double my storage capacity.
I retained the same volume name. I backed up the 2.5TB of data to 3 other disks and then copied it back to my upgraded RAID.
So I have a completely identical file structure. My photos were in /Volumes/GS/photo, and this is where they are now. However Aperture lost all connections to the 35000 referenced files.
It seems that there is no way to tell Aperture that old /Volumes/GS and new /Volumes/GS is the same location from my point of view (is your point of view different?). This means I have to reconnect each one of the 100+ projects manually. I DO NOT LIKE THAT. Am I missing something, or is this a nasty oversight? Don't tell me that this is a "feature" and one can only move REFERENCED masters from within Aperture...
Note: Repairing or rebuilding the library does not help.

    Your suggestion works, but
    1) You have to first select all photos in the "photos" smart album. If you do select them all, "Reconnect All" will not work.
    2) Most important, after reconnecting, I also told Aperture to rebuild my library. And it lost them again... The photos got connected to a <null> named drive which is shown as offline.
We are talking about a big deficit of reliability here...
I had a backup of my Aperture Library. So I reconnected the files again, without a Library rebuild this time.
But what if I need to rebuild my library in the future?? I AM SCARED...
No need to mention that I have lost all day moving around many gigabytes of data, reconnecting files, etc etc. This is hardly a productivity boost.
The worst part is that I like a lot the Aperture UI and I hate the alternative.
    But Aperture is unfortunately unreliable.
Just play enough time with the loupe on my MacPro and the application will crash.

  • Referenced masters both in Ap3 and Ap2

I have referenced masters on an external HD that I access through our wireless network. Even though I have specified where the master images are, Aperture seems to forget or not have the correct drive name available. This is inconvenient bc now I have to locate external masters and reconnect them again. It's getting pretty annoying. Is there any way to stop this behavior? Also, tonight on Aperture 3 I tried to reconnect masters but it kept selecting a PSD file and when I clicked on the associated master file, it would not ungrey the Reconnect All button and eventually Aperture crashed.

To convert managed masters to referenced masters gp to File->Relocate Masters..
To have imported images made referenced in the Import Window chhose the location you want the masters stored:
Seelct a location or create a new one.
