"Referenced": the original files from my camera's card - or Aperture files?
New to +Aperture 2+.
I may be misunderstanding *Referenced vs Managed*.
I understand that Managed takes care of everything - including backups to the Vault.
But does "Store files…" (e.g. in ~/Pictures/Images etc) mean:
1 - keep the original ('DSCN' etc) files uploaded from my camera's SD card etc in ~/Pictures/Images etc,
or
2 - keep some other, new, files generated by Aperture in ~/Pictures/Images etc?
IOW which files will be stored outside Aperture if I opt for Referenced?
Is there anything (else) I cannot do with Referenced?
TIA!
Mark,
When you import as referenced, the file location for storage is the location that Aperture copies the files to from your camera or memory card. All the edits and metadata relating to your photos are stored in the Aperture library.
AFAIK, the only thing you can't do with referenced files that you can do with managed files is have Aperture saved them in the Vault. In referenced, only the adjustments and metadata are saved in the Vault - you have to save your photos to backup or another disk manually (or with Time Machine).

Calx

I have accidentally deleted photos imported to my iPad (model prior to Air) and at the same time I have deleted the same photos from my camera memorycard. Can anyone help retrieve them to either device As there were over 300 which cannot be replaced?

Is there a way to save photos from lightroom without the original file?
I recently imported photos into lightroom, but I failed to save the original files on my computer and they are deleted from my card. The pictures are still showing up in lightroom. Is there a way to save them from lightroom without the original file?
Your images aren't - and never were - in Lightroom, they're just referenced in Lightroom's database.
Lightroom does generate jpeg previews of the originals though, and you can export those using Rob Cole's Preview Exporter plugin: robcole.com - PreviewExporter.
To be clear though, these aren't the originals. -
Lightroom displays files and exports files darker than the original or from Photoshop
Hello all.
I would first like to preface this by stating I am not technically minded, and I know nothing (or very little) of ICC profiles etc.
Though assume someone will attempt to tell me to do something with them in a really technical way which I won't understand, please treat me like a 4 year child in this regard.
I am using Lightroom 5.6 on a Mac running 10.9.4 I have CS6 Photoshop and have a Spyder 3pro calibration device and have linked all of the Adobe programs to the output of the calibration to "hopefully" ensure quality control.
I recently have been scanning analogue film and importing this into Lightroom 5. I have noticed that the file imported always looks darker than the original.
When I have exported from Lightroom them they look like crap.
There are no import additional settings as they are all turned off. I did that when I installed LR.
I have also noticed than whenever I imported a Raw file for some reason the original file would look great for a second then when clicked on would also change to something less appealing. But I digress.
So in attempt to show what is happening. I have created some images to illustrate my problem.
Also it does not matter if I turn the soft proofing on or off.
Lightroom Softproof on
Lightroom Softproof off
Lightroom vs Photoshop Histogram - Very similar
Left: File opened from Lightroom as the Original Right: Original Photoshop File
Left: File opened from an Export from Lightroom Right: Original Photoshop File
Any clues as this is very annoying and at the moment makes Lightroom 5 unusable. Can you put one of your scans somewhere, like www.dropbox.com, and post a public download/share link to it? I'd like to try one of the scans on my computer, though, to see if it does the same thing. You can crop an original down to something smaller that includes sky and trees like your screenshots show.
I am guessing there is a gamma problem or a profile problem somewhere. What Profile do the scans have embedded in them from the scanner? You can turn on the three Ask checkboxes in your color-settings and see what it says when you open an original in Photoshop.
My guess is that LR is using a default profile that doesn't match what Photoshop is using, but perhaps there is a gamma issue, too.
Have you tried opening one of the originals in the Camera Raw plug-in, perhaps from Bridge or just from PS / File / Open. You may have to set your PS Camera Raw settings to prefer ACR for TIFs. ACR and LR should be about the same in file handling so it'd be interesting to see if that is the case. -
Hi, on my last PC when transferring music to my new MacBook Pro i noticed i had about 6 duplicated of each song in every album i took hours in removing them.
I Just wondered Does iTunes store the original music file and then copy it into a separate folder?
If i delete the original file from finder will it remove it from my iTunes library or vice versa. I didnt want to lose any music like i have some how managed to on my old computer.
Or should i keep both files of it in the Music folder and also iTunes library folder?
Which is best ?DrewPowell wrote:

It does both at the same time.
When you add files to iTunes, it copies them into /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/ folder. The original file remains where it was.
You can drag a file to /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/Automatically add to iTunes/ folder.
This will add to iTunes and move it to /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/.
I keep a shortcut of this folder on my desktop then simply drag files to the shortcut to add to iTunes.
Then there are no "extra" files around. -
When using Iphoto to import photo from existing folder to iphoto, what happens if:
1. I delete that photo in iphoto? will the original file in the folder be deleted too ?
2. when importing, does the hard disk store 2 versions of the photo, hence occupying additional space in the harddisk?1 - no -- iPhoto only manages fiel within the iPhoto library - it does not ever do anything with files outside the library
2 - No idea what you are asking - by default (and strongly recommended) iPhoto copies the original to the iPhoto library and you delete the source file outside the iPhoto library - iPhoto alwasy has at least two versions of every photo and some times three - it always have the original, a thumbnail and once a photo is modified a preview - this is not optional - if it is not what you want then iPhoto is not the correct progrtam to be using for phopto management

Moved iTunes library to an ext hard drive to make space on my int drive... Followed steps from apple. Now I cannot access my music... It says: "File could not be used because the original file cannot be found. Would you like to locate it?"
I moved my iTunes library to my external hard drive some time ago and I followed the directions listed here on the apple support page. It did copy my library and now is on my hard drive... I can open iTunes and use it to sync all of my devices but I would like to play my music... I can see all of my music files but can not play them if I click on an album or song it says the following: "(file name) could not be used because the original file cannot be found. Would you like to locate it?" I click locate but do not know where to go from there? I need a way to access all files and not to hunt down one at a time on my hard drive... I am pretty sure I deleted the original library to make space on my internal drive which was the reason for moving it. I have tried and tried to fix it and do not have a lot of time to do so with a one and two year old at my house who do not like it whenI sit down at my computer. What to do??? Any help is much appreciated!!!See Make a split library portable. Move all of the bits of the library together in the the correct shape and it should work. Or undo exactly what you did and then start over.
If you're a former Windows user don't try merging two folders together that have the same name by dropping one into the same folders as the other, as that goes badly on a Mac.

I recently reset my computer and copy my music from an external hard drive to my itunes library. When I click on a song to play i get an error message that says " the song could not be used because the original file could not be found". But when I have my external hard drive plug in the song will play with no problem. What do I need to do to play my music without having the external harddrive plug in ???????? Please help
Because the location for each song in your library is on your hard drive. If the hard drive isn't there, how can iTunes play it?
You'll have to move/copy the music from your hard drive to your computer's hard drive.
Basically, EASIEST way to do all this, if you don't care about your play counts, etc...
-Delete EVERYTHING from iTunes, so that your library is now empty.
-Go to "Advanced" inside of the "Preferences" window, found in the "Edit" drop-down. You can also access Preferences by pressing Ctrl+, (Press Ctrl and the comma key)
-Change your iTunes Media Folder Location to something simple, but on your computer. I use C:/iTunes. Make sure "Keep iTunes Media Folder Organized" and "Copy files to...." are both checked. You can close Preferences now.
-Now, drag and drop your music from your hard drive into your iTunes library. iTunes will automatically add the music to your library, as you would expect, and also creates a copy of each file to place into that iTunes Media Folder you just created.
Shouldn't have any more problems... -
How can I relocate songs from my Itunes? Itunes tells me that the original files can not be found! can someone help?

I can't do it that way. I erase these songs from the iTunes Library, but when I sycronize the iPhone, all these songs are copied again to the Library. Isn't there any way to stop that? Everything I buy on iTunes Store through my iPhone cannot be erased from the iPhone?
WHY can't you do it the way 100 million people do it? -
The movie “The Hunted” could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?

I completed the migration of my music an dphotos files from a PC to my new imac. Both transferred initally and I even synced my ipad with the imac thereby transferring most of the music to my ipad. However now itunes says the music isn't available because it can't find the original music files. How can i find the original files? I am getting the same error on my pc too.
They aren't in your user Music folder? Have You tried Spotlight?

How do I find music that has been uploaded to iTunes from a purchased CD and iTunes is “unable to find the original file?” I no longer have the CD. I have tried all the usual methods of looking in my iTunes library and through Find. No Luck.
Backup drive?
Subscribe to iTunes Match?
If neither of the above and you don't have the CD and can't find your tracks on the computer then they you're stuck. A file recovery utility will cost $100, plus another $100 for an external drive to which to resue the files, and may not even work. You can buy a lot of CDs for $200. -
I dropped my external hard drive that contained my iTues library and the disk is no longer readable. I figured I would simply transfer my music back from my iPod to my MacBook Pro and it loks like it worked. All the songs are there, but I receive a message that the original file can't be found when I try to play anything. ANy help would be greatly appreciated.
A Couple of questions..
Is the location shown under preferences/Advanced/General still showing the correct location?
Is the check boxes under this checked or unchecked? -
