Referenced vs managed VS. file locations

I've always used referenced files; now keeping the AP library on the local disk and the referenced image files on an external FW800, 7200rpm 16MB cache drive. (I think there was a time when even the library was on an external drive - using a previous version of AP.)
I recently read in one post that you should really keep the library on the local drive, not an external (something about it being safer to do so). And if referencing files, you can put them on an external HD.
If this is true and one were to use a managed file system, does that mean the library (which includes the images) should always reside on a local drive? The user guide indicates how to move the library to another drive, but must it always be "in" the mac and not on an external drive?

pvonk wrote:
Yes to OWC - I've purchased a four of these in the past year (FW, not eSATA) and like them so far.
With inspiration from another post, I've decide to abandon the referenced library in favor of the following strategy:
Copy files from the photo card (using ImageIngesterPro) to an external FW800/7200 OWC drive. Then import into AP managed library on the internal 7200 drive, keeping the OWC as a backup of the originals. The OWC is backed up using Chronosync to another OWC FW800 external. The vaults are also made to that OWC. So I have originals on one drive, library on local drive, and vault on another external. In addition, I use Time machine on yet another home drive and a second at work. Plus I use CrashPlan for another backup of the internal. (I'm a safety kind of guy.)
You might say I'm over protective on the backups, but, ignoring these, my workflow is
card -> external --(import)-->local managed library.
I will eventually try using the local drive next for a project.

  • Version/Referenced File name changes and managing reference files.

I had an issue with wrong version names for reasons of my own DAM workflow. I changed the name in the metadata portion of Aperture and changed the name in the drive the has the referenced files for the versions (and there are no duplicated versions, etc). When I go to manage the referenced files, I get the old version names popping up in the manage reference files window/dialog. the names I want show up elsewhere in Aperture and on the reference external drive, but not in the manage reference files dialog. Is there a way to ensure that all of Aperture knows my new version names and new referenced file names?

Oh, and I did restart the application, but not the machine.

  • Best practices re file locations for bootstrap, fonts, js, imgs, custom css regardless of App provisioning or Design Manager

    Hi
I am working with a media company who are producing our responsive branding which includes bootstrap for a new publishing intranet.  It occurred to me that I need to encourage consistency in the file locations regardless of if the files are provisioned

    Hi Stacy
Thanks for your comment.  In the case of my client there will be a fair amount of common stuff that will be on the top level site and also the subsites say bootstrap and certain corporate images. However, I agree, the UI will have  more granularity
in the branding If I deploy your option.  Say  I have business area site which will have a different CSS to reflect its identity; even if has the same master page as other business area sub sites. Also, nn sites could have nn file structures
for css, js, etc which would take a bit of management.Maybe there is a "hybrid" approach I need to consider here.

  • Referenced and managed files

I know this is a topic with a wealth of discussions but my search doesn't seem to bring up what I'm looking for.  Can anyone direct me to previous discussions or other web sites that deal with the whole topic of referenced vs. managed files?  Is there a good book to pick up for that?  I want to have Aperture access my photos from an external drive (for freeing up hard drive space) and I need to better understand how to do that.  Yet it sounds like I should be keeping it in Aperture as well via some sort of compressed file (managed?)  Basically assume I know nothing and want to understand the ins and outs of referenced/managed masters.
    Thanks,
    Steve Hadeen

    Hi Steve.
It's hard to understand -- but not _that_ hard  .  A book is not required.  See if this short description helps.
Be careful (and specific) with your nomenclature -- it will keep you from getting mired in the bogs of confusion that rim our sun-lit plateau.  Your camera creates files.  You import files into Aperture.  On import, Aperture puts that file somewhere, and thereafter refers to it as a Master.  The Master is never altered.  You control where Aperture puts it (and you can have Aperture move it at any time).  What you see in Aperture is an Image.  Every Image has a Version and a Master.  The Version is a text file containing instructions on how to vary the Master to produce the Image.  The Version of the first Image created by Aperture when it imports a file is essentially null (it contains no information).  When you create a new Version, Aperture names it "Version 2".  (The confusion here is that Aperture encourages the user to call Images "Versions".  This is a bit of a devil's bargain: it helps the casual user, but confuses the careful user.)  You can see the Master of any Image displayed in the Viewer at any time by typing "m" (it triggers the Image/Master toggle).
All you need to do is have Aperture move some or all of your Masters to your external drive.  Note that you can easily, at any time, convert Masters from Managed to Referenced and vice versa.  Note too that backing up your Library does not back up any Referenced Masters.  You must back up Referenced Masters in addition to backing up your Library.

  • Windows 7 ultimate task manager can not open file location

hi, I just re-installed the Windows 7 Ultimate on my laptop several weeks ago, everything goes well until I find this error. When I open Task Manger and right click one process, then an error occurs when I click "Open File Location". It shows as
    "taskmgr.exe
This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel."
There is no any information in the windows event log about this error and I try to search online but without any solution. Could anyone help me figure this out? TIA!

    Hi,
Since it prompts that it is related with file association, you can try fixing it.

  • Want to change the SQL Server Agent Job History Text Files Location

We have SQL Server 2014 installed on a couple servers, but they were not consistent on directory paths during the installs. I am trying to get the servers to all match.
On one server, SQL Server the Agent Log and Job History files were being written to [H:\Data Root Directory\MSSQL12.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Log].
I want to change that to [H:\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL12.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Log] to match the other server.
I have ALREADY gone into SSMS - [SQL Server Agent] - [Properties] and changed the "Error Log " "Fle Name" to [H:\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL12.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Log\SQLAGENT.OUT].  And that is working great.
In [SQL Server Configuration Manager] - [SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER)] - [Properties] - Startup Parameters entries have been changed to the new path (-d, -e, and -l), and under [Advanced] both Data Path and Dump Directory are pointing to the new path.
In [SQL Server Configuration Manager] - [SQL Server Agent (MSSQLSERVER)] - [Properties] - [Advanced] Dump Directory is pointing to the new path.
However, the job's History text files are still being written to the old path.
There is no setting in the Jobs or the Maintenance Plans that controls the history file location.
I have searched the registry and changed three settings from the old path to the new path.  The registry does NOT contain any more references to the old path.
I rebooted the server, but when the jobs run their history text files are still be written to the old path.
Does anybody have any ideas??   Thanks

I checked the [Job] - [Step] - [Advanced ] - "Output File", and the field is blank.
I then reviewed all the tabs and left menu items in the Job...I cannot find any where the references the old path.
I then went to the Maintenance Plan and checked every thing there.  Still cannot find what is referencing this old path.
SQL Server is also still writing xel files to this old path...if that offers any clues.
The text file being generated is the recap of the Job run.  Starts with this:
Microsoft(R) Server Maintenance Utility (Unicode) Version 12.0.2430
    Report was generated on "xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx".
    Maintenance Plan: SQL_Backups_Log

  • Referenced vs Managed, Fragmentation etc

There are two hugely helpful (and huge!) posts in this forum on the subject of fragmentation and whether to use referenced or managed images. Many thanks to Kevin Doyle in particular for his erudite discussion of the topics. However, much of what he says applies to heavy pro users and I am left a tad confused over what might be the best strategy for a light user such as myself.
Most (80%) of my photography is done on film (usually rangefinders and usually medium format 6x7) and then scanned in on an Epson flatbed, each image tends to be 50-75 MB but I do have some that are 150MB+. Currently, I have around 2,000 files in Aperture, which gives me a Library of around 24GB. Very small beer compared to most of you guys.
I built my Aperture 3 library from scratch (GPS off, Faces off) and so far it has performed reasonably well - not screamingly fast but no sudden hangs or crashes either. However, having read the two recent mega-posts on this issue, I am wondering how best to proceed and I'm keen to adopt best practice now rather than to unlearn bad habits a few months down the line. My workflow is still evolving but for now I scan onto my laptop hard disk, use PS Elements to remove any dust or scratches (but no other changes) and then import into Aperture as a managed image (ie a "Master" image that is OK at the pixel-level). I then use Aperture to make any further changes (levels, curves, convert to B&W etc).
So far so average. My Aperture Library is still in my laptop Pictures folder - the default Apple location (I know, I know..) with a backup on my Time Capsule and a Vault on a LaCie portable hard disk (not quite enough backups, I realise that).
So my question is, am I such a small user that I should go back to not worrying about all this, or should I change the way I work? I am tempted to move to a system in which I have an external hard drive, partitioned so that a portion (50-100GB?)is set aside for the Aperture Library using referenced Masters and the remainder set aside for the Masters themselves, and then clone that hard disk as a backup. Or is that overkill and would it be OK to keep the Library on my internal hard drive?
    Thanks in advance
    Ian

I recently converted our ~50,000 image 400Gb Aperture library to referenced from managed. Using the relocate masters function it was very easy to do and not horrendously time consuming. In your situation I wouldn't worry about converting to referenced in the future if needed, it is pretty easy to convert the library either way.
One thing you could do with you only having a small managed library is duplicate it onto a new partition of your internal drive, and then relocate the masters to an external, thereby converting it to referenced, and see if you notice any speed improvement. It won't take long to do, and for you the results would be real world. The small referenced library you'll end up with would be quick to defrag by moving it off the partition and then back on again. If it works you can keep it that way, if not delete it.

  • Managed Processed files, where did it go?

If I have Aperture managing raw files & I process the this raw file & run
it through Photoshop retouch etc..press Save, where does it save this
processed image, in the Library? If it does then is there a way to save
it to my Managed original folder?

    Steve,
Do you mean to say that your raw files are Referenced (i.e., not in the Library)? Managed files are located in the library.
If you open a file in an external editor, the file is saved in the Aperture Library, and it is Managed. If you want to change the file to be Referenced and located outside of the Aperture Library (such as an external drive), then select the image and choose the menu option File>Relocate Master. You will be presented with a dialog box that lets you choose where to relocate the image outside of the Library.

  • How can I find Bitlocker External Key File location?

My Windows 8.1 PC includes a system drive and data drives. All the drivers were encrypted using Bitlocker with the data drives set for autounlock.
I recently decrypted the system drive (without decrypting the data drives) and reinstalled the OS, after which my data drives required the Bitlocker recovery key to unlock.
However, I had "backed up" the recovery keys to my Microsoft account but now I can find only the recovery keys for the system drive. The recovery keys for the data drives cannot be found on my Microsoft account.
I have tried to use the "manage-bde" command at the console to obtain the recovery password but I am only getting the Numerical Password ID and the External Key File Name. Can anyone provide advice on how I can retrieve the passwords or the
    External Key File location?
    Thanks.

    Hi Ridgewood,
As my point of viewer, the BitLocker Automatic unlock volume is also protected by BitLocker Disk Encryption. The user encrypted information is stored in the registry and volume metadata. After a user unlocks the operating system volume, BitLocker uses the
encrypted information to unlock the data volume automatically.
After the reinstallation of the system, the encrypted information is lost and BitLocker can’t unlock the data volume automatically.
Every volume has own recovery key.
As mentioned in your post, the data drive require the recovery key to unlock.
I suggest you to double-check the OneDrive and try to find out where did you store the recovery key.
If you can’t find the recovery key, we can’t help you to decrypt the data volume.

  • Open module for managing property file and environment variables

Looking for an open module for managing property files and environment variables (like CLASSPATH) set in a shell script. For handeling properties (preserving comments, supporting includes, appending new entries, and more) I have looked at SuperProperties from openadaptor but find certain functionality lacking. • How can I set the workgroup templates file location in Office 2013 to point at a folder stored on Sharepoint (2010/2013)?

    Hi All,
Been doing quite a bit of research on this but drawn nothing but blanks or alternative suggestions, none of which are viable.
So the outline of the issue:
Deploying Office 2013 suite to organisation and wanting to have custom templates available for users to choose from, but want those templates to be centrally stored and managed on a SharePoint site.
In Word 2013, for example, when you create a new document, you are presented with a page to choose from 'Featured' templates (or blank document)
So, if you wanted to have custom corporate templates, you could modify the file location for work group templates, thus creating a Custom Office Templates folder locally on your PC.
Great. This means when you select 'New' in Word 2013 you can pick from the 'Featured' templates, or the 'Personal' templates area.
However, I have a collection of test corporate templates (for Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc). These are stored on a SharePoint site internally.
If I try to modify the work group templates location in Word 2013 to point towards my SharePoint site (or any HTTP address for that matter) it won't work.
I know that I could point it towards a Network Share location instead, but I don't want to do that.
Is there any way of getting it to point towards a SharePoint site, any way of modifying it? Or perhaps an even better solution that I could use?
Any help, thoughts or ideas would be massively appreciated! And forgive me if any of my logic is off, but it does seem like this should be a straight forward thing to do given that Office and SharePoint are both developed by Microsoft and you
would like to think they would inherently have better links!
NOTE: Going to Office 365 is also not an option either!
Eagerly awaiting an answer from someone incredibly clever!

    Hi Tony,
Thanks for your response but this is not what I was looking for.
Those articles relate to setting a default template in a SharePoint document or form library.
I will try to be more concise.
    What I want is:
    (1) For users to be able to load MS Word 2013 on their laptops/desktops (connected to corporate Wireless/LAN)
    (2) Once they have opened MS Word 2013, I want them to be able to choose a template from the welcome screen. (There are MS Word Defaults like 'Blank Document' or 'Cover Letter' etc)
I want to add a second tab which is called 'Personal' or 'Corporate'.
    (3) MS Word 2013 allows you to create custom WORD templates and save them locally on your machine (either in the default location for templates, or a user-specified custom location (e.g. My Documents, Desktop etc).
    (4) In advanced settings, there is an option to modify file locations. This is where you can point MS Word 2013 towards the folder (locally) that contains the personal templates that you have designed which you want to use.
    (5) QUESTION: Is there a way to have lots of corporate WORD templates (perhaps one for Marketing, Sales, Procurement, Project etc) - Basically LOTS of different templates all stored in one location on SHAREPOINT, or in a SharePoint document
library. THEN... once those templates (documents) are stored on SharePoint,
IS THERE A WAY to go back into the advanced settings within MS WORD 2013 and modify the file location for templates so that it points towards the SharePoint document library?
I want all the templates to open in MS Word 2013, not within a browser, and I don't want users to have to go to SharePoint to find a template, I want it to be integrated into their local MS Word 2013 so they can choose a corporate template the moment they
    load up MS Word 2013.
When I have tried to modify the custom file location for templates, I can only set it to an address locally on my machine, or a network address (mapped network drive).
However, I do not want the templates to be stored on a shared network folder, I want them to be in a SharePoint Document Library.
The issue I have found is that I cannot enter a SharePoint Library URL as my file location, nor can I enter any HTTP address.
IS THERE A WAY AROUND THIS?

  • How to manage linked files with multiple designers?

    Hi,
I work at a small company with multiple designers (5 of us) where 3 of us work remotely. We use dropbox to manage our files so that everyone has access--we keep client files in specific folders and stock media in a shared folder.
Currently whenever we open a file that's been edited by someone else, we have to go in and individually relink the files. Some would prefer to embed the files, however this can increase filesize by 60-400mb. Our current files total in at around 500gb, so I don't think that's a viable option.
4 of us are on Macs, 1 on Windows. 1 has CS5, 3 have CS6 and one has CC.
    My question is this:
If we all have the same path to dropbox (or the same path to the file, either way) will Illustrator be able to automatically find the files?
    Eg. X:/Dropbox/...
If so, will it work cross platform?
I know InDesign has a better link management system, is there a good plugin that would help with this?
I'm going to continue to do my own research and testing, but I thought I'd consult those more knowledgeable than me.
    Thank you!

Thanks for your response. Currently, dropbox works so that it syncs online but also is stored locally on your hard drive (not like a network drive). So one person could have a different path to the dropbox folder than the other. As for the second part, that would be about the same as embedding it in the file as far as general disk space usage. We use many of the same stock photos in multiple files, so keeping them in the same location reduces the amount of space used. It wouldn't be a huge problem if illustrator used relative paths instead of absolute paths, but alas.
I was forgetting that Mac OS doesn't use drive letters, so there probably won't be a way for illustrator to read things as the same path cross-platform...
I'm still wondering if there are any good plug-ins which help find broken links.
I found this: http://techblog.willshouse.com/2011/01/16/adobe-illustrator-linked-files-fix/ which might be helpful, but I'm wondering if there's a better solution.

  • W2K8 & Win7 - Setting system-wide Trusted file locations not working

Win 2008 Network, Win 7 workstations.
RE: Setting system-wide trusted file locations
I have an application using Flash stored on a network location that accesses other files in the same location.  This causes the security warning "The following local application... is trying to communicate with this internet-enabled..."  I can add the location to the trusted sites in the Setting Manager and the warning goes away.  It is not practical however to do this on every machine on the network.  I have tried the FlashPlayerTrust directory and mms.cfg file and neither of these seem to work.  Is there a trick to getting the FlashPlayerTrust directory to work properly.  If I could get this working, I could create a script that copies this file to all machines on the network.
Any help you be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Todd,
Can you please provide just a little more detail?
    * When you say "accessess", what API is being used?  Are the paths to the other files relative, file: URI http: URI, other?
    * In the FlashPlayerTrust directory, are you using the same path notation as appears in the Settings Manager?  What's a sample {filename}.{ext} being used?
    Thanks!
