References to photos in iPhoto library fail after upgrading to iPhoto 08
When I upgraded to iPhoto 08, I wasn't aware of the change that made the library a package. I have a database file that contains references to photos in the iPhoto library. (Some of) the references don't work anymore (presumably because the upgrading changed the location of the photos). Also, when adding a new photo, I cannot enter the library, since it is now a package (and adding a picture's reference must be from within the database's adding dialogue window; a reference cannot be added manually). Is there either a way to make the iPhoto library package contents permanently visible? Or is there another way to make the references work again?
APJMS
Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves. If you're willing to risk database corruption, you can restore the older functionality simply by right clicking on the iPhoto Library and choosing 'Show Package Contents'. Then simply make an alias to the folders you require and put that alias on the desktop or where ever you want it. Be aware though, that this is a hack and not supported by Apple.
Depending on the particular database package you use, drag and drop from either the iPhoto Window or a media browser (You can create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS) may work.
Also, for 10.5 users: If you use the extended Open or Attach dialogue (with Column View) you can scroll to the bottom of the Shortcuts and find the Media browser there. Select any pic you want from there.

IPhoto library empty after upgrading to iPhoto 9.6
HI,
I have noticed this problem mentioned by others numerous times with no solution that has worked for me. Has a better fix been found other than recopying all of the files in the 'old masters' list into a new library, effectively losing previously created albums, etc.? Is anyone at Apple actually working this issue since it seems to be pretty widespread and apparently directly related to a bug in iPhoto 9.6?.
OK, first, i have no back up iPhoto library. I had one previously but my secondary external drive got full and I had to wipe it to rearrange a bunch of data. Had planned on re-backing it up when I opened iPhoto and uploaded some new photos from my phone, but this event happened and now I am out of luck...
My iPhoto library is stored on an external drive (Wester Digital my Passport for Mac) and has worked fine until yesterday when I plugged my iPhone 6+ in to upload photos and sync with iTunes. Upon booting up iPhoto, I got a notification that I needed to upgrade my library. I clicked on the upgrade function and was then notified that a mistake was found and a repair was necessary. The repair was ongoing when iPhoto froze and entire system failed, giving note that startup disk was nearly full. After doing system restart and opening iPhoto, I found all photos gone from iPhoto window. iPhoto is using the correct library and after looking at all internal files in iPhoto library, I found all photos had been moved to "old masters, old thumbnails, old previews". Files are below:

Size of iPhoto library is still over 500 gigs, so data is there apparently. I immediately backed iPhoto library up, so at least this data has been salvaged, but I still can't access my photos. I have used iPhoto's rebuild functions sequentially all the way to full rebuild, with no photos being found. I then used iPhoto library manager app's rebuild function, and it also revealed no photos.
So, what can I do to sort this out? Needless to say, with 500+ gigs of photos, I am concerned. I am hesitant to do the manual rebuild using the 'old masters' option since I will lose all of my previously organized albums. Is waiting for Apple to issue a fix that will actually restore lost data only a dream or would that feasibly happen? Thanks in advance for any and all help that can be offered.and....
Here is the step by step method to recover your photos into a new Library....
Please read the warning below first.....
The current emergency only workaround fix for this issue when the user hasn't made or doesnt have access to any backups, is as follows....
Quit iPhoto
In Finder, Select iPhoto Library
Control Click on iPhoto Library and choose Show Package
Drag Masters or Old Masters folder to either desktop or external HD if not enough space on System Drive
Delete or preferably move iPhoto Library file to new location so at a later date one can recover the library again if needed..
Restart Mac
Launch iPhoto... (It should then create a new Library automatically...)
Drag and drop the Masters or Old Masters folder(s) onto iPhoto's icon... or use the menu option in iPhoto to import photos and point to the Masters or Old Masters folders saved out previously.
Be patient............
Photos will then be re-added to iPhoto... and added to the new library...
Note: If you have both Masters and Old Masters folders then add them one at a time, letting iPhoto import and index all the photos from one folder before adding another....
Important Warning!!!: All modifications and folder structures/albums from the original library will be lost.... but at least the original photos are rescued... and a new library is created that should be free of issues with the current iPhoto/Yosemite combination. -
Updating iPhoto Library fails to complete in iPhoto '08
I'm upgrading my mother's eMac from OS10.2 to OS10.5 (and iPhoto from 'really ancient, perhaps '04 if not earlier' to '08). The OS 10.5 upgrade appears to work '100%' but the iPhoto '08 hangs while attempting to Upgrade the photo library. The upgrade process takes about two hours to process the images, with the progress bar consistently moving across the screen. Then, with a small sliver of progress to go (and the message saying '5 minutes' (or '4 minutes') remaining on the progress bar), all apparent Upgrade progress stops. I've let the process continue for 12+ hours w/o any additional progress. Had to force quit iPhoto. Each restart of iPhoto starts the same process (and hang) -- I've attempted it three times so far (different OS/iPhoto patches). All software patches/updates are up to date as of 11/15.
As far as I know, the original iPhoto library was working fine before I started the upgrade.
Any ideas? As a possibility, I'm thinking of trying to 'import' all the photos from a backup, but I'd lose any albums &etc. Anybody have any better ideas? Thanks.NThorne:
Try the following: download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, putting your administrator login name, long or short, in the owner and group sections. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field. Then try converting the library again. Do you have a backup copy of the library?
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file. -
IPhoto library gone after upgrade to Tiger
My iPhoto library was empty after upgrading to Tiger. I am on my 4th digital camera, so you can imagine how many photos I can no longer find. What is worse, and I don't think there is anything worse, I can no longer see photos of my child who is deceased. I want my photos back!! Can anyone help. The "computer nerd" company that did our upgrade is of no help at all. They talk to me as if I knew anything about computers and I know nothing. Please help me.

Three separate issues then:
1. The files which are corrupt or a file format that Preview doesn't recognize
Some things to try:
Change the file suffix to .jpg (i.e lowercase) or .jpeg and see if that helps.
Download Graphic Coverter and try open them with it. Graphic Converter is a image editor, and frankly, if it won't open them, I doubt anything will.
2. "Unreadable Files: 1
The following could not be imported. (The file is in the iPhoto Library folder.)"?
iPhoto will not import files from the iPhoto Library Folder - it's a simple protection against duplication.
3. iPhoto fails to display any of these images at all.
Do you get a blank square in the iPhoto Window? What happens when you click on a pic to edit it in the iPhoto Window? Do you get a ? or a !
The ! or ? turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents. The most common cause of this is User Activity in the iPhoto Library Folder. Have you altered, moved or renamed anything in the iPhoto Library Folder?
If you haven't, then try rebuilding the database. Hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys and launch iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose the top three options.
If you want to start over:
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same film rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual rolls to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

Lost all photos and other problems followed after upgrade to iphoto 6
All of my photos disappeared while creating a calendar in iphoto 6. I was finally able to find them in the trash can???? After loading them back into my library the photos have shrunk. I shoot with an 8 megapixel camera, and now I can't enlarge at all. How can I recreate my original library. Very frustrated with latest release.
Any suggestions?
BillThe new structure organizes photos into Originals and Modified folders. There is a third folder called Data that contains thumbnails created for the photos (smaller pictures used for better performance). These three are essential for iPhoto 6 to work.
Each folder contains a folder for each year (a year folder is created if you have even one photo from that year, e.g. a photo from 4/3/2004 will create a folder called "2004" and any other photos from that year will then be placed within it.
Every import creates a serially numbered Roll folder within the year folder. So if you import photos including IMG_234.jpg from 4/3/2004, for example, the location of IMG_234.jpg will be:
iPhoto Library/Originals/2004/Roll 1/IMG_234.jpg
And Roll 1 will have other photos imported in the same session. If you modify the photo within iPhoto (enhance, retouch, etc), the modified copy will exist in:
iPhoto Library/Modified/2004/Roll 1/IMG_234.jpg
The Data folder will contain a thumbnail for the image in the same path as the Originals:
iPhoto Library/Data/2004/Roll 1/IMG_234.jpg
So inside the iPhoto Library folder, you will see some files and those three folders with their sub-structure folders. Other things within the top level of the iPhoto Library folder, are leftovers from the previous structure - such as a folder called "2004" or "2005" that ISN'T inside Originals, Data, or Modified folders.
PhillyPhan's advice is sage. Don't mess with the insides of the iPhoto Library. However, I did verify on my own system after I upgraded, that year folders at the top level of the iPhoto Library are from previous versions of iPhoto. So you could move those, and those only, to a separate folder on your HD. I moved those off to a DVD-ROM and haven't seen problems since.
Remember: Don't touch any files, and don't touch anything within Data, Originals, and Modified folders. -
IPhoto Library unusable after upgrade to iLife'11
I have recently purchased the iLife'11 Family Upgrade Pack for up to 5 Macs with which my Dad and I have upgraded both of our Snow Leopard capable iMacs.
My iMac was fine when upgraded. Immediately after upgrading I was prompted to use Software Update and then the iMac performed an operation to 'upgrade' my iPhoto Library (or was it the other way around?).
However when I upgraded my Dad's iMac (24", 2.16ghz) the upgrade itself seemed to take ok, but something went awry when the Mac got to the point where it wanted to update the iPhoto Library. During this process it kept reporting that certain files were missing and I was forced to search for them manually. I found these files and the upgrade was eventually completed. I forget now which files they were, however one particular file was repeated a number of times.
Anyway, ever since upgrading the iPhoto Library on my Dad's machine, his iPhoto won't open and he's cussing me flashes.
Any idea what went wrong and how I may fix this?
By the way, I took the usual precautions before upgrading, like running Disk Utility, repairing permissions and so on. I even ran Disk Warrior and got that to fix any potential problems before I did anything.Downloaded the iPhoto Library Manager that you helpfully provided the link for and asked it to rebuild the library.
This appeared to be going well until we got about 75% of the way when iPhoto Library Manager itself froze. Luckily we were able to identify the Photo that it was working on when it froze so we opened up a copy of iPhoto on our backup drive, found the offending Photo and trashed it before emptying iPhoto's trash.
iPhoto continued to behave a bit sluggishly and other problems were aparent such as the Thumb nails for event not changing as the cursor moved over them. So I trashed iPhoto, re-installed the '09 version, then ran the '11 upgrade again followed by the software update of course.
Toboot iPhoto appears to be working again.
By the way, I found out what those files were I mentioned in my first post. They were .dv file from some movies that I don't think belong where they are anyway. They were made by my digital stills camera so that may have something to do with it.
Thanks for the iPhoto Library Manager tip. It helped a lot. -
Carbonite backing my iphoto library again after upgrading to ilife 11
I have Carbonite online backup and have my system backed up. Since upgrading to iLife 11, Carbonite wants to back up my system again thinking everything it backup already is new files/data. This want Carbonite support saids,"we have reviewed the log files and found that duplicate files are being backed up. As the iLife program has changed the My photo and video directories. These are being backed up again. We would suggest you make changes to the settings of iLife program, so that Carbonite does not recognize it as a new data. " My question, want setting am I changing so carbonite doesn't duplicate my back up? it wants to upload 137 gig of data (again) it will take for ever! Thank you for any help.
I also have Carbonite. Before upgrading to iPhoto '11, I divided my library into multiple smaller libraries just so my computer didn't seem so taxed. I have Carbonite in case my computer crashes or is stolen. After doing all this maneuvering of libraries and then the upgrade to '11, my Carbonite was going bonkers.... it even sent me an email saying I hadn't backed up in over a week. I don't know why I got that email. But, I think that Carbonite finally caught up somewhat to my moving around of files and then upgrading to iPhoto '11.
I think I prefer the concept of taking an external HD or two (making one or two additional copies of my libraries).... and, maybe telling Carbonite to not back-up those libraries (the ones that I don't actively use right now) until my Carbonite has caught up on my actively used libraries. Then, once it says that you are caught up, you can one by one add those unused libraries back to your "back-up" to catch any additional changes you may make on those libraries in the future. This way, your current changes are for sure being captured on your Carbonite back-up.
I don't know if this makes sense. And, perhaps your usage is different than mine. But, I had over 14,000 photos in my single library. Now, I have 9 libraries with up to 4,500 in a single library. I only actively use one library right now. And, will be making sure that one is on my back-up with Carbonite. Then, once that is done, I will add the other 8 libraries one by one until they are all updated all the while making sure my primary is being captured as well. But, if something does happen between now and then, I have my external HD with copies of my iPhoto library at least until Carbonite is all the way caught up. -
Iphoto Library disappeared after upgrade
I have upgraded my iMac to Yosemite and have been using iPhoto fine since then (although it is a bit slow), yesterday iPhoto crashed the computer, after several restarts the computer was ok, but iPhoto wouldn't load and then said it needed to be upgraded - So I did this and when I opened this again it crashed then said that it needed to upgrade the library and then it crashed (iPhoto) when I restarted it started with no library and would appear to have overwritten the iPhoto (default) library, I have checked this and although there are other libraries, I am aware of these and these are not my missing library. I found some information on http://www.scanyourentirelife.com/all-my-pictures-in-iphoto-disappeared-how-to-s afely-get-them-back/ and this talks about looking in the 'Masters' file but to be very careful as altering this will cause problems with edits etc. Anyway I found that in my directory a file called 'Old Masters' as well as 'Masters' and it would appear that all of my pictures are now in 'Old Masters'.
So I am opening the right file but how do I make the 'Old Masters' the 'Masters' - is it as easy as shifting the files or changing the name on the file?
Tech Stuff - My iMac is running 10.10 Yosemite and is about 1 year old 27" version and I keep everything up to date (for my sins) - My library 700+ events and is about 176gb in size
Your help would be appreciatedPaul,
Did you find a solve for this? Having the exact same issue. Thanks! -
Iphoto library failed to finish opening (iphoto library manager)
My iphoto library is on an external harddrive and opens (however, without showing the actual picture thumbnails but only the frames where the pictures should be; as long as i am scrolling, i can see the actual pictures). The Iphoto library manager gives an error message that iphoto "failed to finish opening" the library.
What can I do?
Thanks for you help. What format is the EHD? (Note - it must be Mac OS extended (journaled) to have the iPhoto library on it)
and how is it connected to your Mac? it must be on a fast hard wired connection like ThunderBolt, ISB or FireWire

IPhoto quits unexpectedly after upgrading from iPhoto 7.1.5 to 9.2.1
I upgraded directly from iPhoto 7.1.5 to 9.2.1 via the App Store in Lion.
After launching iPhoto for the first time the application starts to rebuild the library. About 5 minutes later it quits and reports an "iPhoto quit unexpectedly" error. I tried simple solutions like restarting and repairing the disk permissions but still get the same error

Why is the item count in Photos for Mac significantly higher after upgrading from iPhoto?
Since upgrading to Photos for Mac from iPhoto, I've noticed the number of photos and videos in my library is higher than what I had before. Granted I imported some photos into the new app since then but taking that into account there's still a big discrepancy.
In iPhoto 9.6.1, the item count is 13,394 and I have since imported 95 new items into Photos for Mac. The total then should be 13,489 but Photos for Mac lists the item count at 13,626. That's a difference of 137 items.
Even taking into consideration that Photos for Mac might be including the 32 photos and videos that were in iPhoto's Trash (now Recently Deleted) folder, it still wouldn't account for 105 mystery items.
Does anyone have any insight into this difference in the number of items?Since upgrading to Photos for Mac from iPhoto, I've noticed the number of photos and videos in my library is higher than what I had before. can't open my photo library after upgrading to iphoto 11. Is it possible to download iphoto 9.0.1 after installing '11. Have followed all the other instructions and am in a loop which doesn't allow me to access iphoto or my photos.
when iphoto wouldnt open we read the trouble shooting info and it said that we may have needed to download 9.0.1 if we had an older version. We obviously didn't download it before the upgrade and wondered if it would cause problems or indeed solve the problem if we downloaded it now!
When we try to open iphoto is says:
To open your library with this version of iphoto it first needs to be prepared
To prepare the library use the iphoto library upgrader available from Apple.
We have downloaded this twice now and it still sends us this message when we try to open iphoto. -
I opened iPhoto today and found I had NO PHOTOS in the library. After a day of reading, I seem to have found them. However, panic does not begin to describe my emotions. They continued to come up on the screen saver, so I knew they were in the computer somewhere. What I don't understand is what happened?? I am now busy backing them up into my external hard drive, again, but just now including the ones from about August 2011 to now. I don't back up often enough, but thank gosh I haven't lost them all. My question is this: What is the best way to get them back into iPhoto? I have an old version of iPhoto and I was prompted to update to '08, which I thought I had and BOOM - all the photos were gone when I said "no". I have lost all my albums and wonder what it will look like if I put them back in? They were found in the iPhoto Data folder. I looked it up in iPhoto Help.
They were found in the iPhoto Data folder.
These are not your Photos. They are just the thumbnails that show in the iPhoto Window. They are tiny and not useful for anything. Look for your photos in the Originals Folder.
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'. Are any Libraries listed? -
I just installed Aperture 3 from a CD. i also imported my photos from my Iphoto library. After importing most of the photos imported are blurry and it tells me the program is "processing" and it never stops. What do I do?

My Iphoto Library won't upgrade / update after Lion install.
Ok so i updated my OS X to Lion and everything seemed fine but the Iphoto Library had an update and I installed it after this. Now i'm getting a message that my Iphoto library needs to upgrade to be able to run on this version of Iphoto. It starts to upgrade fine but never stops i just have a wheel as pointer like its thinking or trying to upgrade. It will go like this for days. I have GB's worth of photos i can't seem to get to. Help
To repair the Library:
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
