Refine Edge in Photoshop CS6 superior to Fluid Mask 3?

I have been using Fluid Mask 3 since Photoshop CS3.
But, recently, looking at a tutorial at a retouch DVD I bought, it seems that the CS6 version of Refine Edge is superior to Fluid Mask.
It seems to have a far more advanced algorithm, and the fact you can work in layer mode with actually seeing what you are masking off in real view, it seems to me it's time to ditch Fluid Mask 3.
What's your take on this?

no difference.
i have tried to check and uncheck everything...
if i adjust the sliders, i get NO Preview... but when i click OK, the resulting photo has been completely ruined by the tool...
I tried deleting preferences...no change
the weird thing is that this problem was very sudden.  Just a few weeks ago, I was using refine edge with NO PROBLEM. it is my GO TO tool for extracting people out of pictures...
but then one day, it just stopped working...
Do i need to reinstall CS6???

When I click on Refine Edge... instead of a brush icon, I get the CIRCLE with a SLASH and my system keeps dinging because the tool is just not available.
I deleted my preferences...but it is still a problem
NOW... when I adjust the sliders, i don't see a preview of the adjustments...

  • Is Refine Edge better in CS6 than CS5.5 than CS5

Is refine edge better in CS6 than CS5.5 than CS5 - have there been continual improvements
    Thx

The CS5.5 code is no different than CS5.  I can't say from personal experience whether the newest code is better; I've been able to get good results from both.

  • Refine Edge Freezes Photoshop CC

Hi. I've been using Photoshop CC for a couple of months now with no issues. I've used the Refine Edge ability many many times and had no issues. I recently changed the "view" in refine edge to overlay mode, and did some work with that dialogue yesterday and everything was fine. Since then, whenever I open Refine edge, the entire application freezes, and I have to terminate Photoshop in the windows task manager.
The video card driver is up to date, and there have been no other changes to my computer that I know of. I've actually uninstalled and reinstalled PS, and the same problem persists.
What could be causing this freeze and how do I solve this?
I am using a Windows 7 Enterprise machine, 64 bit, 16GB RAM, dual monitor set up with Nvidia Geforce GTX 560 Ti

As a follow up, I think I've narrowed down the issue a bit - I reset preferences in Photoshop, which reverted my setting in Refine Edge back to a default viewing more which was not overlay view. This seemed to work fine (i.e. PS did not freeze up). However, if I switched to overlay view, part of my workspace (a square or rectangle) would turn red (as its supposed to), and the rest would not. Plus, PS will freeze up. Thus, the freezing problem seems to be related to using overlay mode in refine edge. It just - becomes too much to handle, for lack of a better term.
    Anyone have any thoughts?

  • Operation of "Refine Edge" in Photoshop Elements 11?

In trying to use "Refine Edge" in PSE 11, having obtained the drop down menu and clicked on "Refine Radius Tool" - the icon turns to the prohibition sign
rather than a brush. None of the menu controls has any effect. I have watched several instructional videos on this subject and so I think I know what I am doing!
But I cannot find any control to change the situation. Anyone met this before? Most grateful for suggestions.

It's possible in the Refine Edge dialog you have Show Original checked.
If so, uncheck Show Original and see if the makes a difference.

  • Quick mask in refine edge- Adobe photoshop elements 8

I installed elements 8 on two machines. When I make a selection on one machine and go to refine edge quick mask the unselected area is mask off. On the other machine the selected area is masked - Which is wrong. I reloaded the program onto the machine and the same thing happened. How do I get the inverse area masked.

    Some how my
default file got change and by reinstalling the soft ware it retained its settings.
By holding control shift Alt at start up gave me the option of getting rid of my settings folder. Works fine now.

  • How do I get Vertus Fluid Mask 3 to show up under filters in Photoshop CS6

The Fluid mask installer doesn't recognize Photoshop 6.  I selected other and tried to put the “Vertus Fluid Mask 3” folder that contains the files dbghelper.dll & FluidMask3.8bf into the Photoshop 6’s plugins directory.  It’s not available within Photoshop.
It does however function as a freestanding program so I know it works on the computer.  It also worked very well under CS5.
I’m sure Vertus will get around to upgrading, but I’d like to be able to use it with my current projects and not have to wait for them
UPDATE:  The above procedure works for the 32 Bit install of CS6...  Not with the 64Bit....  would like it to work with 64bit since I edit some sizable files

There's a new version out which works as a plug in for CS6 64bit, free update for all FM3 users.

  • Photoshop Refine Edge Tool questions

I made a Quick Selection of a person and am using the Refine Edge tool with the goal of extracting the person from the image so I can place her somewhere else.
I set the Smart Radius box, and Radius to about 2, smoothness to about 9, and then I take the Refine Radius tool. I start brushing around the edges of the hair to add missing strands to the selection.
1.) When brushing around the head, should the + that is in the middle of the brush be brushing on the very edge of the hair? Should it be touching both the edge of the hair and the background? How does it work best?
2.) Do you only want to use the Refine Radius tool over areas of hair? What else does it work well with?
    Thanks.

Quick Select and Refine Edge are one the biggest game changers in recent Photoshop history IMHO.  They make it so quick and easy to make complex selections, anyone can start making amazing composites, but Refine Edge just isn't as intuitive a tool to use as some of the tutorials make it out to be.  Not even close, and I am not surprised that people have problems with it.  Next time you Google up a tutorial ob Refine Edge, take into account the clean white background they are starting with, and then go find a tutorial that uses a busy background.
Hair is fine.  You can't do fine with lots of smoothing and feathering.  Smoothing is going to tame jagged edges, and feathering is going to make the edges soft.  Hair won't survive that.   If you have a busy background, then there's a good chance you are not going to get a good selection.  That's why the Martin Evening tutorial I recommended is so good, because it is a lot truer to real life than most, and it lets you fine tune the selection to wherever you are going to composite it onto.

  • Refine Edge Tool Not Highlighted to Open - CS6

    Hi Everyone,
I have been using CS6 on a mac OSX retina without any issues until today, the "Refine Edge Tool Box" isn't highlighted anymore to open? is there some simple answer to this to reactivate it to open as it should? any helpful info would be appreciated - Thanks

OK, I rebooted the mac and whatever caused the glitch seems to have disappeared

  • Refine edge not working in cs6 64 bit

This might be user error, but I'm having difficulty with the Refine Edge  tool.  When I use Quick Selection to highlight a subject, and click on  Refine Edge, I am unable to add or remove part of the selected region  from the mask. I can erase, or draw over, and it shows, until I depress  the mouse, and it goes back to the original selection. I reset my preferences and still not working.  It has worked in the past.  Just stopped working.
    Thanks for your help!

Anyone can help me ? Thanks

  • Photoshop Elements 6: "Refine Edge", where is it?

I'm trying to follow these instructions:
In the Layers palette, make sure the proper layer mask is active.
In the Effects palette, double-click the "Refine Edge" pictogram.
In the Effects palette, I see Filters, Layer Styles, etc ... I can't find Refine Edge?

Thank you Barbara ... I couldn't find it in any of the tools (lasso, magic wand, ...) for example my lasso tool option bar shows: selection options (new selection, add to selection, etc.) feather, anti-alias, width, edge contrast, frequency, and tablet pressure ... don't see "refine edge".  But there it was under the Select menu.  I really appreciate your prompt response.  Trying  to learn from a book tends to be time consuming and aggravating as it's easy to get hung up on little issues like this, resolving it made my day.

  • Photoshop refine edge radius tool will not turn on

I've used the poligimal, magnetic, and good old lasso tools as well as both the magic wand and the quick selection tool and for some reason when I select the Refine Edge tool everything is selectable and workable EXCEPT the eraser and refine radius tool. (photo proof)
I'm assuming I changed a setting somewhere because it was working fine before, but I have no idea what to check.
    1) I restarted the compuer
    2) I selected reset tools  then
    3) reset all tools
    4) I've tried every combination of tools to see if I was limited to one means of lassoing the pic
    5) I've opened various types of pics
All in all, I get that darned little icon which will not let me refine the edge any further.
    Any suggestions?

I've tried it with every combination I can think of. On, off; maximum settings on various sliders to nothing. I just tried it again and I still get the same round pointer with the circle and slash through it, meaning I can't use the tool.

  • Photoshop CS6 crashes constantly on 2 very different macs, but CS5 running very stable!

    hi
our photoshop cs6 (with latest update to 13.0.4) keeps crashing daily and is not stable at all.
so we would work with cs 5 again, as this version is very stable and wont crash even once in a year.
we are daily/"9-5" working at a photographers´ studio and use 2 different macs:
    - brand new mac pro 6-core (2010/Westmere) with 48GB RAM under system 10.8.3
    - old mac pro with Two 2.66 GHz Dual-core Intel Xeon "Woodcrest" from 2006 with 16GB RAM under system 10.7.6
(both with standard equipped/shipped graphics cards)
cs6 crashes daily whith following tasks:
    - frequent crashs: using "motion blur"
    - frequent crashs: using "refine edge"
    - sometimes using "transform tool"
during our tests, we found out, that "disable graphics card" (photoshop>settings>performance) in the mac pro from 2006, would prevent a crash, when using "refine edge". in the latest mac pro from 2010, we did not find any solution to prevent a crash.
a "crash", we define as follows: during the mentioned tasks, photoshop is gone from the screen in the blink of second, and an osx sign appears "photoshop has crashed"..
    thanks for your time..

Instructions for submitting crash reports with your email address: http://adobe.ly/gNJWVY
As Chris states, this will help us track down your issue.
I agree is Christoph, I would suggest leaving OpenGL/"Use Graphics Processor" enabled and twiddling the Advanced settings for Drawing Mode to "Basic." Then restart Photoshop and see if the problem still persists.
That setting is the main difference between CS5 (Basic) and CS6 (Advanced).

  • Photoshop CS6 issues seriously impairing productivity

Ever since I purchased CS6, I have encountered these 2 issues, thought they weren't a big deal and carried on, but I found myself in the past few months always using at least 6 extra steps to do what could previously be done within 1 sec with a very simple additionnal option within the menus.
    - Rounded Rectangular Selection :
The rectangular marquee tool previously had a little box which added the possibility of transforming the current selection radius to instantly have a rounded rectangular selection. Now we have a "Refine Edge" tool which does not even do anything when the selection is used on the full canva and does not even affect the selection within the selection boundaries, using the radius option will add a radius to the selection.
    - Contract Selection
We can contract a selection if it is partially outside of the canva, but cannot if it is perfectly fitted on the edge, why disable the option? It would have taken 2 second to add an extra condition allowing a normal mode contract if all 4 edge have been selected. We lost this functionality just to add a minor feature allowing the selection to be contracted on only the sides that were not touching the edges.
A correct implementation would have allowed both, not cut one to add another.
Both issues are pretty much linked to the same thing and this is getting really frustrating, I just signed on for the forum because I couldnt handle this never getting patched, I feel like I should have sticked with an older version instead.

Think you wrong there you could  feather  cornors some in prior versions and get somewhat rounded corners but you should have been using the rounded rectangle tool to do what you want in all versions of Photoshop. Put the rounded rectangle tool into Path mode then turn the path into a selection of you need a selection when a Path, Shape or or pixel fill will not do.

Many complained about this.  When there is a select all selection when the canvas size is selected the only modify selection option availavle for use is now is border.  If all you want to to is contract the selection by some number of pixels its easy to do.  You modify border 4 px then do selection invert.  You could make an action to automate this the first step would be an interactive selection modify border that is followed by the invert selection.
