Refine Mask Problem

I am attempting to you the Refine Mask and get the basic selection made, create the mask, but it will not make any adjustments to the mask.  If I try to use the Refine Radius tool, or Edge Detection, nothing happens.   What am I not doing. or doing wrong?  I have followed the video tutorials in the Adobe Help site.
The image was originally a jpg that I converted to a PSD for editing, if that makes a difference.

In the tool bar are you clicking on the appropriate buttons. If you have the left most button active all it will do is create a new mask every time. I alway use just the add and minus buttons...unless I mess up and hit the wrong one from time to time!
I hope this helps.

  • Problem with Refine Mask (Edge) Tool (+Refine Radius Brush)

    Hey all,
I'm a teacher at Vancouver Film School in Canada.
Having some major problems with the Refine Mask tool in Photoshop CS5 (+5.1)
Especially when using the Decontaminate colours check box.
    it eliminates smart objects
it leaves artifacting (especially in areas where I use the Refine Radius tool.) see posted image
these are consistent problems. When I uncheck decontaminate colours, the artifacting doesn't happen and smart objects stay in tact.
Is anyone else having problems with this?
    Also having this problem
sometimes the radius will only increase INSIDE the selection  and not in the center like it should. This is the most frustrating  because it's not consistent but happened on 4 systems yesterday while teaching a class.

    Hi Notsosimpleton,
You most likely already know this stuff.
I have been experimenting with two images with Photoshop.  I agree that masking is a non destructive method of editing your image, but when you choose to use the decontaminate color option the refine edge feature automatically changes from new mask to new layer with mask indicating that the decontamination is destructive.
Smart objects by there nature prevent pixel level modification. From my (general) understanding of the decontaminate color feature, Photoshop is attempting to replace edges which contain colors from the non selected area with colors from the selected area, in turn your smart object needs to be rasterized to allow this process to take place.  This then creates artificating because Photoshop is painting on to edges with color, leaving undesired rubbish around your selection. The majority of this is hidden by the mask.
Changing your selection method or using clone stamp with the blend mode set to color and replace edges using selections from inside the selection area.  Affectively doing what Photoshop would do, but manually.
I am not sure this really helps?, but I always try using other masking methods to achieve the result i.e. channels, paths.  I would be happy to experiment and share the results.

  • Extreme Bug in Photoshop: Refine Mask slow

    Hello!
    Im using Photoshop CS5 (v 12.0.4) on iMac (27-inch, Intel Core i5 2,7 GHz, 8gb – should be _fast_)
Everything else works perfectly but my problem is with Refine Mask tool, with medium sized images 3000x4000px.
It takes extremely long time, from 5 to 15 minutes, to make any kind of adjustments in this tool.
And now Im wondering whether this is a common bug or something that can be fixed?
    Thank you so much!

    Thanks for the reply!
Unfortunately that didnt solve the problem. I got quite fresh iMac (OS X 10.6.8), I bought it couple months ago so i havent really done any maintenance yet.
We have these same iMacs at work where we do professional image manipulation and advertising etc. And this Refine Mask tool is extremely slow there also.

  • Refine Edge vs Refine Mask

    Good day people
What would you guys say is the relationship between the Refine Edge Dialog box and the Refine Mask dialog box? I'm busy with Advanced Photoshop and this is one of the short questions I have to answer. The only answer my textbook gives me is that the Refine Mask dialog box has the same options as the Refine Edge Dialog box.
Could anyone give me an answer for 3 marks, please?
    Monya

Wouldn't it be best to go find the two dialogs, experiment with them, and get to know what they do?

  • Mask problem in Premiere Pro CC 2014

    Hello!
I have a strange problem with the mask tool in Premiere Pro CC 2014, and made this video to explain the problem.
    Hope someone can help me.
    Thanks a lot
    /Per Haar
Mask problem in Premiere Pro CC 2014 - YouTube

But the whole point is that I am not able to place the mask properly because of the strange way it behaving. The purpose of a mask is that it should affect the area it is located above and not somewhere else, and it should also fill the entire mask and not only a spot at the center of the mask area.
It has nothing to do with the order of things, or if I turn up feathering or extract the edge. It's all about the wired way it applys it self.
If I apply and drag the mask to the corner, it should affect the corner and not somewhere near the center of my footage. As it is right now I have to zoom out to 25% and drag the mask way out of frame to affect the corner of my footage.

  • Refine mask - radius tool size shortcut ?

    hi
i have a question about radius tool in refine mask
is there a shortcut to increase or decrease the size of the "brush"
on the toolbar the preset is locked -> screenshot
i can increase the size moving the mouse over size and increase & decrease
i tried a shotcut to increase / drease the size of the radius tool
in the edit->keyboard shortcut there is not items
    thanks
    windows 7 ultimate

I use a Wacom for that type of work, so don't really use the short cut tools as it is easier with a pen in my hand to just use the slide bar, BUT, I did hear in a "Lynda" video...there's a great one, though I'm still having issues with the refine tool on hair....it loses depth of color and goes almost gray....the part I'm trying to define....Anywhooooo.....I believe she said the left and right bracket bars.  Excellent tutorial and on this site.    Hope this helps and hope I remember correctly as don't use it!

  • Refine Mask extremely slow

I've just upgraded from CS3 and the selling point for me was the new Refine Mask features in CS5.
Everything is working beautifully - except the Edge Detection brush in Refine Mask.
It's very, very slow - I just sit and wait until it completes the tiniest stroke of the brush.  I'm working with a 20 mb file, so it's not particularly large.
I'm using an iMac  OSX 10.6.3,  2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo,  3GB SDRAM,  ATY RadeonX1600 Graphics.
Would appreciate any assistance you can offer.
    Thanks,
    Catherine

  • Masking problems

    Hi.
I have stumbled over a masking-problem, that I hope you can
help me solve. I have made a mask with a movie clip containing
several graphic objects on separate layers. Please see reference
    image 1.
I tried to create a "splattering" effect, which I felt I
did... until I played the result.
It seemes that overlapping content in the mask will null out
the overlapping areas in the mask, and reveal content behind the
masked layer. Please see reference image 2.
What I wanted was to reveal the masked layer only, not the
content behind, so that it would look similar to reference image 1.
Please explain what I'm doing wrong and how I can fix this.
    Thanks alot in advance! :D

    too
Are you talking about the root-timeline? On the root I have
two layers. One with an image, and the other one which is a mask
layer to the first. The mask layer contains a movie clip. This
movie clip is my "splattering"-mask. The idea is that the image on
the first layer of the root-timeline will be gradually revealed by
the effect created in the movie clip lying on the mask layer.
The movie clip contains several layers. Each with a separate
single "splat" motion tweened to create a realistic look.... well,
at least good enough for me. :) - The problem mentioned appears
when two layers in the movie clip are overlapping. This causes the
mask to null out the overlapping areas when run.
Is this the same method you're describing? If so, what do you
    suggest the problem is?
And what suggestion do you have for solving this in the code?
I assume you're talking about ActionScript? I'm open for anything
as long as the problem gets solved. :D
Thanks alot for your help so far.

  • Refine Mask Dialog - hair masking

Still getting mixed results using "Refine Mask" feature. I have seen the tutorials on this -Russel B, and Juleane Kost. Sometimes the results are outstanding, other times I have to resort to contrast masking, etc. I currently have a series of portraits shot against blue (basically a blue screen). Some of the subjects have good hair contrast (very dark brown or grey). There are many parameters to set in the refine mask dialog. I need a clean, sharp silo of hair edges. I have tried many combinations, and typically use "smart radius". But I am particularly disappointed with the results of one subject who has grey hair -good contrast against the blue. They mask tool keeps including too much of the BG blue. I have also tried decontaminating colors, but prefer to do that later with a layer set to "color". Some of the tutorials sneer at the use of Contrast Masks (which I typically get good results from). But the the Refine Mask options often produce flawed results -which is surprising with these blue screen portraits.
Would welcome suugestions from other pro users for setting parameters, brush diameter, within Refine Mask dialog to halp get more accurate/nuanced results. I know you're not seeing my images, but I'm guessing that certain parameter combinations generally work better in a wide range of situations.
    Thanks!

You seem to be taking the pictures with the idea of extracting them from the background. Blue and green screen are used for video because there is no blue and green skin tones. The background is removed by hardware and it does not have to be that good around hair at 30 frames per second human vision is not going to see how good or bad a single frame may be.
For still images you much better off using a white or light gray background.  These will not cause a color cast and the fringe hair areas will have a neutral white or gray color which blend well with all colors.  Light the background  that is some distance behind the subject evenly with its own light source and see to it that no shadows fall on it. • Photoshop CS5 Refine Mask Edge Problem

Whenever I try to use the Refine Edge tool for a mask, it will not add what I have selected to the mask, rather it will take it away. This always happens when I use the tool, no matter what view I am in. Any suggestions?

I take it you are starting with a layer with a layer mask, and using Mask Edge in the Mask panel?  Have you got a copy of the same layer underneath it?
The shift edge slider is fairly subtle.  Try draging it to 100% one way then the other. Do this with a layer filled with a contrasting colour immediately below it in the layer stack.  You'll see a difference, but it is not much.   If you use big values with the feather slider, now that WILL be obvious!

  • Quick Selection Refine Edge Problem

Using CC 2014.2.2, and the Quick Selection tool, when I go to Refine Edge the Refine Radius Tool/Erase Refinements Tool
is grayed out.  When this is clicked, and the cursor moved to the selection, what shows is a slashed circle.  (The universal
    sign for "No").
I've tried various views, settings, and layer arrangements, and changed the bit from 16 to 32 to 8, and nothing seems to allow
those tools to be used.  I've also reset the Quick Selection tool.
Screenshot of image, but the slashed circle will not stay in place for a screenshot:
    Dropbox - 2015-03-12SS.jpg

You have View set to Marching Ants.  I think every other option will allow the use of the brush.
    A couple of tips:
Any amount of Smoothing will prevent Refine Edge of selecting individual strands of hair.  Negative values of Shift edge will have the same effect.  If you think about it — if a hair is two pixels wide, and you set Shift edge to -4 the hair has gone.
Try setting View to Black, uncheck Show Original, switching in and out of Show radius.  This will show if your radius extends far enough, but equally important, shows if you have painted 'into' the image.  This can cause the annoying softening of edges.
Don't use Decontaminate colours until you have the other settings working well.  I don't think I have ever needed to use such a high setting for it.
One problem with having Remember settings checked, is that it can overwrite useful defaults.  For instance, checking Decontaminate colors switches the output to New layer with layer mask, and that is really useful as it allows you to clean up the selection manually.
Refine Edge was a real game changer, and dramatically speeded up the selection process.  Unfortunately, I don't think it was anything like as intuitive as Adobe would have us believe, and nor have any of the tutorials I've seen really and truly got a grip on it.  The Martin Evening tutorial maybe comes close.

  • Masking problem in speedgrade cc

Hi, i am using direct link in premiere to speedgrade, using 4k footage but editing in 2k sequence with scale to fit option,i am doing my cc with vignette mask and coming back to premiere(all grades done with adjustment layers),when i removing that scale to fit option in 4k sequence, footage is changing to 2k to 4k,but the mask didn't,is this is a bug or is there any way to change my mask grade to 4k....

Can you please do some screen grabs to illustrate the problem?
My thoughts go to the possibility of your editing a JPEG that JPEG decompression "block" artifacts, or maybe a pattern of noise in your image.
I just tried selecting a subject using the new feature then doing a Refine Edge and didn't see a problem...

  • Project coding mask problem

    Hi friends,
    My coding mask is: 00/XXXX.X.XX.XX.XX.XX.XX
The First six characters are for the Project definition.
First I created the Project definition, eg: 13/0000.
Then I created the top level WBS element which will be the same as the Project definition, 13/0000.
Then I created the 9 second level WBS elements (limit is 9 as per the coding mask) eg: 13/0000.1, 13/0000.2 and upto 13/0000.9
Then I want to create some 20 WBS elements under the first WBS element (13/0000.1). At this time the system is allowing me to create the first 9 WBS elements, i.e, 13/0000.1.1, 13/0000.1.2 and so on upto 13/0000.1.9. According to the coding mask the system should allow me to create upto 99 WBS elements at this level. But this is not happening. I am surprised. I want to know why this is happening. Please help me out.
    regards
    Pratap

Sorry for the delay in reply. There was some problem in SDN website here as a result of which I was not able to post my reply.
In the meanwhile I found out the reason for this problem.
    My coding mask was 11/XXXX.X.XX.XX.XX.XX.XX
Since it is 'X', the project creation was not being allowed to create more than 9 WBS elements.
I then tried changing to 11/XXXX.0.00.00.00.00.00
    Now it is working fine.
    Thanks for your support guys.
But I have one more doubt now.
I have the old Coding (11/XXXX.X.XX.XX.XX.XX.XX) in my quality server. How do I make changes and transport it now? I may face problem since I have already created projects in the quality server with the old coding mask. Please sugget.

  • SDO_RELATE AND SDO_GEOM RELATE MASK PROBLEMS

I am trying to use the SDO_RELATE operator on my spatial table.
    I have been experiencing problems.
I also get the same problems if I use the SDO_GEOM.RELATE geometry function.
    Background
    Table2 contains about 20 000 rows.
    Table1 contains about 1 000 000 rows.
    Both tables contain area geomteries.
I can not get the following 'masks' to return any results.
    -- OVERLAPBDYINTERSECT
    -- COVEREDBY
    -- COVERS
    -- OVERLAPBDYDISJOINT
    The all return -
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel
    Elapsed: 00:00:20.00
However the mask INSIDE does work!!! And it returns the correct results.
The query syntax I am using is below. And substituting any of the above mentioned masks for INSIDE results in the ORA-03113 error.
I have validated all the geometies in my table using SDO_GEOM.VALIDATE_LAYER. They are all valid.
    Query Syntax
    SELECT /* ORDERED */ count(g2.parcel_ref)
    FROM table2 g2
    WHERE 1 < (SELECT /*+ ORDERED */ count(*)
    FROM table1 g1
    WHERE SDO_RELATE (g1.geometry,
         g2.geom,
              'MASK=INSIDE querytype=WINDOW') ='TRUE');
    SELECT /* ORDERED ORDERED_PREDICATES */ count(g2.parcel_ref)

    WHERE 1 < (SELECT /*+ ORDERED */ count(*)
    FROM table1 g1
    WHERE SDO_FILTER (g1.geometry, g2.geom, 'querytype=WINDOW')='TRUE'
    AND SDO_GEOM.RELATE (g1.geometry, 'inside', g2.geom,0.001)='INSIDE');
Does anybody have any ideas why all the masks (except INSIDE) fail?
    Thanks,
    Bob

    Dan,
I have finally got back to looking at my problem queries.
The first discovery I have found is that I can repeat the problem using one feature in one of the geometry tables.
You can see the syntax that I am using below. As I stated before, the INDSIDE query works, but the COVEREDBY fails.
OVERLAPBDYINTERSECT,COVEREDBY,COVERS,OVERLAPBDYDISJOINT also return the same ORA-03113 error.
    SELECT /* ORDERED */ count(g2.parcel_ref)
    FROM table2 g2
    WHERE g2.id = 3658
    AND 1 < (SELECT /*+ ORDERED */ count(*)
    FROM table1 g1
    WHERE SDO_RELATE (g1.geometry, g2.geom, 'MASK=INSIDE querytype=WINDOW') ='TRUE');
    *** THIS ONE WORKS!
    SELECT /* ORDERED */ count(g2.parcel_ref)
    FROM table2 g2
    WHERE g2.id = 3658
    AND 1 < (SELECT /*+ ORDERED */ count(*)
    FROM table1 g1
    WHERE SDO_RELATE (g1.geometry, g2.geom, 'MASK=COVEREDBY querytype=WINDOW') ='TRUE');
*** THIS ONE DOES NOT WORK! The error is below.
    SELECT /* ORDERED */ count(g2.parcel_ref)
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel
I have also been running some other queries on my data.
Again, one query works, the other does not.
    SELECT /*+ ORDERED ORDERED_PREDICATES */ count(*)
    FROM table2 g1, table2 g2
    WHERE g1.id = 194
    AND SDO_FILTER (g2.geom, g1.geom, 'querytype=WINDOW')='TRUE'
    AND SDO_GEOM.RELATE (g2.geom, 'overlapbdyintersect', g1.geom,0.0001)='OVERLAPBDYINTERSECT';
    *** THIS ONE WORKS!
    SELECT /*+ ORDERED */ count(*)
    FROM table2 g1, table2 g2
    WHERE g1.id = 194
    AND SDO_RELATE (g2.geom, g1.geom, 'MASK=OVERLAPBDYINTERSECT querytype=WINDOW') ='TRUE';
*** THIS ONE DOES NOT WORK! Again, the error is below.
    SELECT /*+ ORDERED */ count(*)
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel
I have checked that the two problem geometries are 'valid'.
    SQL> select sdo_geom.validate_geometry(geom, 0.001) from table2 where id=194;
    SDO_GEOM.VALIDATE_GEOMETRY(GEOM,0.001)
    TRUE
    SQL> select sdo_geom.validate_geometry(geom, 0.001) from table2 where id=3658;
    SDO_GEOM.VALIDATE_GEOMETRY(GEOM,0.001)
    TRUE
Below is a print of the geometry of each of the problem features.
Have you got any ideas as to why the queries are failing?
    Thanks in advance,
