Reflowable Epub issues

So I think I've really messed up my project. This is my first book and in all it's wonder I'm trying to convert this as an EPUB, which I've never done before. I've tried fixed layout and it looks beautiful, however I can't increase the fonts (for those that would like to have larger fonts). Aside from this one area, it's wonderful. So I tried a reflowable epub... uh oh.
For some reason I probably didn't setup the "styles" correctly to translate into a reflowable epub format. There are many unwanted line breaks, and my chapter titles are separate from the main text area. This is more of a teaching book so most users will be using ipads or tablets, and I'm a bit stuck at this point. I want to offer the epub version free if you purchase my hard cover book, but I'm afraid this process may be too much for my inexperience at this point.
Any suggestions?

Producing good ePubs in not intuitive.
Take this step-by-step online course and it will explain how to successfully create ePubs and how to subsequently also convert them into mobi files which you can uploaded to Amazon to be read on Kindles.
Tablet users can download apps that can read both these digital formats.

Video does not show on iPad in reflowable epub

I placed a video in my InDesign file, as an FXL it works just fine, but when I export to reflowable epub, the video does not show on the iPad (I only see a blanc container), it only shows in iBooks on the desktop... Help, what am I doing wrong, am I missing something?
(video is: mp4, h264, placed in: InDesign CC 2014 file on a Mac)

Which version of Edge are you using?
Please update to the latest version of Edge which is 2014.1.1 if it's not already, and then try to reproduce this issue.

Exporting to reflowable epub

I'm new to InDesign and I'm having an issue with formatting when I export my file as a reflowable epub. The .indd file has each chapter starting on a new page and the table of contents reflects that. However, when I export it, the page breaks disappear. Does anyone have any advice/tips on how to fix this issue?

You need to choose your options in the ePub export options dialog (when
you are about to export your ePub).
Under the General tab there's an option that says "Split Document". Tick
that, and then choose whether you want to split the document based on a
single paragraph style, or on several paragraph styles.

How can I code to play audio continuously from page to page in iBooks for reflow ePub

Hi,
I have tried and successfully completed the iBooks ambient soundtrack option in Fixed Layout ePub. It works fine.
But while trying the same in Reflow ePub, it is not working in iPad iBooks. I have latest iBooks version and latest iOS version in my iPad.
Please let me know how can I code to play audio continuously from page to page in iBooks for reflow ePub?

As soon as the user turns to the next page, the audio stops.
That's how it works in all cases.
the book is a read aloud book.

TOC to ePub issue

InDesign CS5; MacOS 10.6.5
When I export my TOC document to ePub, the TOC doesn't show—only the last two pages containing text and an image.
The TOC has defined paragraph styles. I think I have my export settings correct.
Help in isolating this issue is appreciated.
Note: Viewing other documents in the book via export to ePub do show up correctly—although the book does need formatting tweaking for ePub.
Also, when I tried exporting the entire book via the book panel, InDesign begins the export, but no activity in the progress bar; I have to force quit to get out the endless loop. Then, when I restart InDesign, untitled files begin to open—10, 20 and so on; I then have to manually close each file.
I suspect the TOC is causing this issue.

Firstly. Unzip your epub file
Change the filename from "filename.epub" to "filename.zip"
Unzip the file
So you will see under the OEBPS folder all of your files as "filename.xhtml"
Also a .css file which holds your style for the books (paragraph and character style)
Step one (linking your TOC)
Open you TOC file in Dreamweaver.
Select the first entry
Click on the picture of a folder in the bottom box
Select the corresponding file. In this case it's Acknowledgments.
rinse and repeat all entries in your TOC (sure it's repeatitive but it works).
Then open your individual files which you have link to from your TOC. (you can open them all at once)
Select something to link back to, and point the link back to the TOC file.
Rinse and repeat
The once you have done this.
you need re zip your your folder to an epub.

Simply drag you folder onto it. this will zip up you folder into a .epub

Small Caps ePub Issue

I am working on putting text into the ePub format and keep running into the same issue.
I want the title of the chapter to utilize Small Caps. Within InDesign I've got it look exactly the way I wish for it to - "Chapter One" appearing with small caps.
I've Highlighted the phrase "Chapter One" and applied a paragraph style that has the following features:
[no paragraph style] + next [same style] + Times New Roman + size: 24 pt + small point
When I export to ePub to view the document in Adobe Digital Editions these changes are not present. I've tried just about everything from applying character styles and nested styles, but nothing is working. I'd like these Small Cap appearances to work in the ePub versions as well.
Any thoughts on why this is not working?
Any help is much appreciated. Scouring the internet for a while has not turned up any advice.

Hi- I have a problem with small caps and epub export too, in InD 5.0.
I defined a style with a nested stye that applies small caps for the first four words. I see this definition in the CSS output by InD:
span.no-style-override-2 {
font-variant: small-caps;
I do not see this style applied in any of the content. If I manually code it in:
<p class="first-graph" xml:lang="en-us"><span class="no-style-override-2">Eric and Kate, young</span> ....
it is correctly displayed. I'd like to get InDesign to export it correctly. I notice the same behavior in 5.5.
What can I do to have my nested style properly marked up in the epub export?

Epub issue in CS4

In my version of inDesign CS4 I don't have Export to Digital Editions visible, I do have Export and Export to Dreamweaver. Is there a step to activate this feature? Any help would be great. I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.3 and have been experiencing problems with it from the very beginning.

Ivan, you'll have to log onto these forums and change your email preferences. Log in, click on your avatar at the top of the page which will take you to your profile and you'll find a tab called email notifications, you might want to check the mailing lists tab too No one else can fix it for you... Well they probably could if you got really desparate .

What is the best way to preserve page numbers from InDesign to EPUB?

I have a project where the source files are InDesign based - the final step before the product goes to print. We want to bring this content to reflowable EPUB format, but we need to keep the print page numbers in order to support citations.
Has anyone faced this type of challenge previously, and what was the approach pursued? While an InDesign 2014 export to EPUB Fixed will preserve the page numbers, there will be a lot of cleanup required to make these files reflowable again.

Hi Douglas,
I agree that the common practice of removing the page numbers works with regards to trade content (fiction, non-fiction, magazines, etc) where pages generally are to communicate how far you have 'travelled' in a particular title. With reference works, however, this particular type of metadata can have a greater meaning - communicating to other individuals the location of a reference in order to allow them to see the reference in its original context. It becomes a way of locating relatively precise locations within a work that is being referenced.
Currently, and we can expect for some time, the original print content will be the authoritative version that is referred to, or cited, as a means of communicating the exact location of a specific reference to another individual. Although evident in many industries, perhaps this arises most commonly in legal texts, where a lawyer as part of an argument or a judge in writing a decision will cite a text reference by title, volume, possibly edition, date/year, etc. and, ultimately, the page number - which in the end is just another piece of metadata relative to the text that appears on that particular page. In order to create digital copies of these types of texts that can still function relative to the print authority, an accurate page number that corresponds to the print needs to be available somewhere in the texts. (This is true both ways, by the way - both in terms of following a cite to a specific location within the content; and citing a specific location within the content).
For many publishers, InDesign will be the final, what I would call 'exportable' format that can maintain a certain degree of information about the context of the source content and will have page numbers represented that precisely reflect what will be found in the final print version.
I have some ideas on how I would like to present this in a reflowable digital version (and reflowable text for this type of content is desirable for all the reasons it would be elsewhere - adaptability to screen size, ability to resize/change fonts for different reader experience, etc). And the new EPUB fixed export function will allow me to preserve the page numbers and through some programming I can get to a point where I can isolate the text that corresponds to a specific page number from the InDesign exporta manual solution would not be an improvement), but with a somewhat 'cleaner' export of the text of the content, where the precise fixed formatting is not so important.
The perfect solution would be to allow page numbers to be preserved within a 'hidden' tag in the EPUB reflowable export - so that the content of each page would be preceeded by an <a id="Page_75" /> tag, with words that are hyphenated belonging to the page on which they started. Note that the use of such a tag would also go a long way towards supporting the call for a "page-list" and hyperlinks as you've described them above. If the publisher wanted to make use of such a tag, it would be available to them - otherwise the tag would be ignored by publisher and eReader software alike.

Error message: Page Anchor not found: 188 when exporting to ePub

I have been working on exporting a book from InDesign CC 2014 to reflowable ePub format. The book is about 250 pages long with numerous photographs, all of which are anchored objects. I am now able to export a good-looking ePub file, but I keep getting just this one error message, Page Anchor not found: 188, followed by the pathname for the file. I don't see a problem at page 188, but I'm not very experienced with InDesign. I have done several searches, and I'm not sure exactly what a "page anchor" is. Can anyone help me figure this out? Can I just ignore this error. Thanks.

I had similar problems which were resolved when I anchored images only within text with styles that would not be included in the TOC, and also made sure there were no blank paragraphs (unnecessary hard returns) with a style that would be included in the TOC. Hope that helps.

Why fixed layout is more expensive than reflow?

I noticed that fixed layout is more expensive than reflow and i do not understand why.
To my mind, the work is the same : modify css and some other pages (toc etc.)
so the price should be the same.

Fixed Layout EPUB with InDesign currently requires knowledge of custom plug-ins to precisely position objects on the page. You're not getting any help from InDesign. It can be quite time consuming.
Reflowable EPUB with InDesign CC can be mostly done by properly formatting the document with styles, by using the Articles panel, by customizing objects with Object Export Options, by mapping styles to tags, etc. Most of the work is done in InDesign and it requires less time.
I can say publicly that Douglas Waterfall, InDesign's software architect, has hinted that he is leading work on the Fixed Layout area and we may see big changes before long.

Export to Fixed_Layout EPUB: Paragraph Styles not exporting to CSS class tags

Hi,
As it says, my Paragraph Styles aren't exporting to CSS class tags with a Fixed Layout EPUB.
...But Object Styles are working ok.
Seems to work ok when exporting to HTML or Reflowable EPUB... just not Fixed Layout.
Any ideas?

Any tips for ensuring that checkboxes and hyperlinks work in ePubs?

Can anyone help and give tips on how to get the check box buttons and hyperlinks to work when exporting to ePub? I must be missing something but no matter what I do they will not work when exported to ePub from InDesign CC (current version). I have to make these work for a book that's going on sale by the weekend, so any help will be gratefully received!

Fixed or Reflowable EPUB?
Fixed Layout EPUB in the current version (InDesign CC 2014) cannot represent text-based hyperlinks. It's a limitation until the next version.
There is no support for PDF forms in EPUB (checkbox buttons).

Hyphenation in epub

Hi,
I am creating an ebook and I use hyphenation, but in the export as reflowable epub the hyphenation is missing. What am I supposed to do?

In a reflowable EPUB, there is little you can do about hyphenation. Remember that your eBook will be read on a variety of devices at different resolutions and aspect ratios. Some EPUB readers apply hyphenation, some do not.

Indentation in EPUB

Hi,
I am creating an ebook using Indesign CC. I have lots of code in it. I have added it in the text frame within the flow of the text and also tried putting it in independent text frames too. Indesign CC shows the indentation, PDF is fine too, but when I export it to EPUB all indentation is gone. Can anyone please help me with this. I need all the indentation intact.

You haven't said if you're on a mac or PC. I understand that on a PC you can directly open an EPUB. But, as I am on a Mac I need a utility. I use a little app called EPUB Unzip and then to zip it back up you'll need EPUB zip. Just search on Google for them. They are open source (free). Or you can use Sigil to get into the EPUB without unzipping. Sigil is good, but does change the file structure a little bit, and for that reason some people don't like it. For a reflowable EPUB it doesn't matter much. Though I don't think I'd open a fixed layout EPUB with it. Sigil is also open source—it's very easy to use, too.
You'll also want an EPUB validation app. I use Pagina EPUBcheck 3.01 (open source). Or you can use the free online checker here: EPUB Validator (beta) though it's for SMALL files. I like Pagina because it suggests fixes for errors—even though those fixes may be completely greek to you and me.
Finally, I really suggest you get a subscription to Lynda.com and watch everything Anne Marie Concepcion has ever done on EPUB. While not the be all and end all, her knowledge is a very good place to start. Lynda.com is $25 per month but you can quit anytime (though um, I haven't, because well it's kind of addicting). So, even if you only use it for a month, you'll learn a ton and it'll be well worth it.
Lest I sound like some kind of freakin' expert, let me assure you this is a long and painful process, with little help out there for us "non-programmer" types who've been thrown in the lion's den. I am still learning everyday, by my own wits it sometimes seems. Even today I am learning (most painfully yet) how to program a fixed layout read-abound book by trial and error, because even after BEGGING Adobe ON BENDED KNEES we don't have support for read-aloud and according to insiders hereabout they have NO PLANS to give us that. Yes. I am going to continue to whine about it, frequently.
