Reformat external hard drive - "bad superblock", "magic number wrong" error

i was just given a brand new 300GB USB hard drive, however, as it came NTFS-formatted, immediately after plugging it in for the first time, i fired up Disk Utility, and attempted to format it with UFS.
The problem arose when the progress bar just sat there for an hour at a constant 5%. Assuming the program had stalled (it hadn't...though it would have sat there indefinitely), i quit Disk Utility, opened it back up, and again attempted to format the drive--only this time, almost immediately the program output:
BAD SUPER BLOCK: MAGIC NUMBER WRONG
LOOK FOR ALTERNATE SUPERBLOCKS? yes
SEARCH FOR ALTERNATE SUPER-BLOCK FAILED. YOU MUST USE THE
-b OPTION TO FSCK TO SPECIFY THE LOCATION OF AN ALTERNATE
SUPER-BLOCK TO SUPPLY NEEDED INFORMATION; SEE fsck(8).
i opened up Terminal and tried manually to find an alternate superblock, to no avail.
fsck -b32 /dev/disk2s3
i've been unable to find any solutions to this issue online, but i'd really like to use my drive i've heard that this problem has to do with hardware that's about to fail, however, this is a brand new drive, and i'm quite certain the error is as a result of the aborted reformat operation.
Does anyone know how to remedy this? Thanks in advance.

Hello TheRedWino, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Hmmm, what kind of Case/Chipset does it have?
Have you tried erasing it with Zeros one Pass?
"Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the Erase tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume, then choose MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Partition tab.
6. Click Erase & look for Security Options. choose Zero 1 pass."

I have a Macbook pro 13" A1278. I purchased it around december 2010. I have a HHD 3.5" drive desktop select II 1.5TB. I purchased it around Febuary/March 2011 to use with my Macbook pro. I formatted it and moved all my files to there, I got it so my macbook's hard drive wouldn't brake and I lose everything on my macbook.
    Is there any fixes?

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."

  • Need to reformat external hard drive for time machine?

    Hello,
We recently purchased an external hard drive for our family iMac after we had to have a new hard drive put in. We picked up a Western Digital 1tb My Book (http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=725). I set up the external hd with time machine and all was fine for about a month.
An error message of "The backup volume is read only" started appearing. I attempted to repair the disk through these directions http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3275#1 but when I was trying to follow the steps, I think I disconnected the external hd without dismounting it, so now I'd assume I need to reformat the external hd. I can't seem to find instructions on how to do this. Where should I look for reformatting my external hard drive?
Any other tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.

  • Reformatting External Hard drive: Disk Utility crashes near the end

I recently updated to Leopard and emptied off my external hard drive and then wanted to (zero out data &) reformat it and start fresh so as to use it with the new Time Machine feature.
However, near the end of reformatting it with Disk Utility the progress just stopped and after giving it some time I did a force quit and sure enough it came to light that it had crashed. Since then I've tried again several times to the same result. I even tried doing it of the Disk Utility on the install CD and it crashed with one minute left!!
Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated!

Use a more powerful utility such as DiskWarrior, or a product such as those listed here.

  • Recovery of reformatted external hard drive

My kid accidentally plugged my external hard drive (which I use to back up my Think Pad laptop) to my new MacBook Pro and let Time Machine reformatted it to become my mac's backup disk. Now all data that I stored before in that external hard drive is lost. How can I restore it? Thank you everyone. - Gabriel.

Thanks guys. I have to try to save it at all cost. All of our personal data, including graduation, wedding, birth of the kid, everything is in there.
And that was the only place all that data was stored?????
Well I am sorry for your loss but whenever you have data in only one place you are destine to lose it.
Externals are for storing backups of data that exists elsewhere. Not as the only place it is stored. But hey everybody has to go through it, at least one time. And some many times.

  • Inherit Time Machine History on Reformatted External Hard Drive?

A few days ago the external hard drive I use to store all my data got corrupted. This external drive is also the location of my home folder (I moved it off the primary disk to have more space). The main OS system disk is fine and I was able to login to the guest account, but couldn't log in to my primary account since the drive wasn't working properly.
From the guest account I ran disk utility on the external drive and it was unable to fix it and it required reformatting. I reformatted the drive and restored the data to it from the my Time Machine backup. I then was able to log back in to my primary account. As far as I can tell all my files are there. However now when I open Time Machine there is no history.
Based on other info I've found on these forums and others, by reformatting the drive (even with the same name), Time Machine treats this as a new drive and wants to start a new Time Machine history for it. I've learned about the inherit history commands that I can run but before I do that I had a couple questions:
    1. If the history is still available, should I be able to see that when I manually browse the contents of the Time Machine drive? There is a folder with a "full sized" backup but I don't see any subfolders with incremental backups.
    2. If the command fails to link history, is there an alternative to get it back - or should I just format the Time Machine drive and start a new full backup. It seems like everything restored ok, but I'm nervous about reformatting the backup.
    3. Might there be a better configuration for my home folder storage for day to day use and backup purposes? With this issue, it was unsettling being effectively locked out of the machine since the home folder is on the external drive. Also it seemed doing a "system" restore could only restore the system drive and not the "complete system" including the external drive. It would be nice if I could just restore everything from Time Machine in one shot without having to shuffle things around, reformat manually etc.
I'm running Mavericks on a Mac Mini if that helps. My external drive is 2TB with about 1.25TB of data currently and my Time Machine disk is 1.5TB. System disk is 1TB.
    Thanks!

Your best option is to start another backup on a new hard drive. You should do that anyway, as one backup is not enough to be safe. Put the old drive aside until you're sure you'll no longer need the data on it, then erase it and start over.

  • Data retrieval from reformatted external hard drive

I have an 80Gb Lacie rugged portable external hard drive that I had to reformat in Disk Utility in order to mount properly.
In the 'Erase' option I picked 'Don't Erase Data' in the Security Options. As I understand it the data is still retrievable until I start loading fresh content on the drive.
Anyone know of a way/program of retrieving this data?
    Thanks

    Hi Jason,
If you cannot find the data on the drive, your best shot at recovery is Prosoft Data Rescue. There is a free trial to see if it can recover what you need. But don't do another process on that drive until you've downloaded and run it.

  • Lightroom .lrcat file on external hard drive = bad?

True or False: Adobe engineers recommend against running one's LR catalog off an external hard drive (the .lrcat file, not the pictures), with the preferred method being to use a catalog (.lrcat file) that exists on the computer on which the application software is installed; the reason being that one is more likely to experience database corruption and diminishing performance if running it off a hard drive.
as background to this simple True/False: I teach in a lab setting and in past when I had students create the LR catalogs on their external hard drives I always had several corrupted catalogs and crashed drives during the semester; since implementing a workflow of students creating catalogs on the lab's computers (and copying the folder w/ the .lrcat file to their external hard drives at the end of the class for backup/home use) I've had no such incidences.
I thought I had read a post regarding this on John Nack's blog but cannot locate any reference to it.  if someone can point me to some documentation in a white paper or on the web about this recommendation from Adobe's engineers it would help me convince my academic colleagues!
thank you very much in advance for any response.

Back a quite while ago there was an issue with OSX (I'm sorry but can't remember if it was specific to Tiger or Leopard) and external USB drives causing catalog corruption. If I remember correctly it had something to do with a timing problem between the OS and hardware. By chance is your lab running an older version of the OS and are the problems mostly on USB?
If not, I would agree with the other poster that improperly dismounting drives is a likely culprit. I'm in an academic environment where we're running LR on hundreds of OSX machines with very few problems (with LRCAT on the externals). Almost always it can be traced back to either bad cables, improper dismount (LR is still running), or drives that are in marginal condition. But having said that, the catalog can be fragile and students have a way of bringing that out...

  • Reformatting External Hard Drive Without Losing Files

I recently switched from a crashed HP to a Macbook and am trying to reformat my external hard drive, but it looks like every option requires me to delete the files on my hard drive. Is there a way to avoid this? I'm a fitness instructor and ALL of my music is on the hard drive...
    Thank you!!

Why are you reformatting the drive?  Is it formatted in NTFS for Windows?  If so, the Mac can read the files off the drive, which is what you'll need to do.  Reformatting is a destructive process, so if you want the drive in a different format (such as Mac OS Extended) you will need to copy the files off to another location temporarily and then bring them back once the drive is reformatted.  Since the Mac can read the old drive, an external drive formatted Mac OS Extended could be attached as well and the files moved over.
If you don't want to do that, there are some third party options that will allow the Mac to read and write NFTS drives.  The downside is that it's more than a bit tricky to do, and the risk of things going wrong when writing is likely why Apple defaults to only reading the NFTS drives and not writing to them.
If you will need to use the drive on both Windows and Mac machines the one "common" format is FAT32.  That has its own issues (including a hard and fast 4GB maximum file size) but either OS will read and write the drive without complaint.

  • External Hard Drive Deleted Whole Folder When Moved (error -36)

  • My USB port doesn't detect my external hard drive. What could be wrong? (WD My Passport for Mac)

My Passport for Mac originally worked and I was easily able to download files. It even worked on my MacBook Pro. Now, when I attach this external hard drive and open Finder, the external drive is not there. I've run Disk Utility. I've shut down, hit alt+command+p+r and still, the USB port does not recognize the external drive. Can anyone help.
I don't know if this started after I had problems with a virus (Trojan) and I used MacKeeper AND Sophos AND MacBooster to try to "clean up" the virus. I delete the viruses (8 of them from email), and they come back with another check. This makes me wonder what is the best antivirus software!
    Thanks for anyone's help!

Even though it is dated, check through the steps discussed in this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1126326
When you restarted the Mac, did you connect the WD drive while the Mac was shutdown, make sure the drive was powered if it has an external power supply, and then start the Mac?  I always turn on all external components before powering up the MacBook Pro or iMac.

  • I recently transferred my itunes library to an external hard drive. Now I get the error message 'the original file could not be found. Could you like to locate it' when i try to open songs. My iPod syncs ok.

I recently tranferred my iTunes library to an external hard drive. Now I cannot open songs and get the error message ' The song "***" could not not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it'. This applies to all 9742 songs!!. My iPod still syncs ok, but I can't play songs on the PC. Can anyone please help.

It would help to have more background about your iTunes collection such as if you keep it on an external drive, or if you have moved or renamed anything recently.  iTunes is very sensitive to you renaming or moving files or folders involved with your media.  iTunes only keeps a reference to where a media file is located  and then goes to look for it when you try to play it. If you have changed things since it was added to itunes then it's like me sending you to look for a friend in my addressbook but that friend has moved.
The other possibility is your computer is starting to lose files.  Again, the computer uses a reference database to tell it where on the drive to look for a file. If that database gets corrupt then it starts losing files.  Use Dsk Utility's first aid to verify your hard drive.

  • Successfully upgraded to 3.3 Unable to backup to external hard drive. Aperture closes unexpectedly without error message.

Upgrade to 3.3 was successful. My library is stored on an external hard drive and I have vaults stored on different hard drives. Aperture seems to be functiong OK but I am unable to backup to my external hard drives. The application seems to go through the process of upgrading the library again and quits unexpectedly at step seven without an error message. Anyone come up with a work around before Apple sorts this bug out?

What do you mean when you say "unable to backup to my external drives"?  Are you updating your Vaults?  If so, are you able to create a new Vault?  If you are, create them and confirm that they work.  If they work, delete the old Vaults and keep the new ones.

  • Reformat external hard drive for Windows machine using disk utility

I have a Maxtor 160GB dual-interface external HD. I used it for my Mac OS X. I erased and reformated the hard drive on my Mac to MS-DOS using Disk Utility for use on my fathers Windows XP. I hooked the hard drive up to the Windows machine and the hard drive was visible in both Windows Explorer and on the task bar. I right clicked on the hard drive and selected Format. The formatting takes a while but at the end an error appears indicating the hard drive was not formattable. How can I get a MS-DOS formatted hard drive (from a Mac) to be used on a Windows XP machine with a NTFS format?

    Turns out it is possible:
    Maxtor Support..
I would use your Disk Management utility within Windows to repartition and reformat the drive. To access Disk Management, right click on My Computer, go to Manage, and then choose Disk Management. Within Disk Management the drive should show in your list of disks (Disk 0,1,2 etc etc). I would delete any partitions that are on the drive. To delete a partition, just right-click on the partition and choose delete. Make sure you’re deleting the correct drive. Once the entire drive says unallocated then the drive should be ready to partition and format. Just right click within the Unallocated Space on the drive and choose the New Partition or New Volume option to set up the drive.
I followed the instructions and everything worked.

  • Reformat External Hard Drive

I recently backed up my MacBook through Time Machine because I wanted to delete all of the multiple iPhoto Libraries/Photos/Thumbails/Extras. I backed everything up beforehand and everything is where I want it to be.
I was wondering if, when I back up my MacBook again, does Time Machine erase what I have erased on my original hard drive?
    --Megan

Time Machine will delete those items if they're no longer on the MacBook's internal drive and there isn't any free space on the backup drive. It is intended to be used to retrieve items which have been accidentally deleted from the original drive or earlier copies of overwritten items, not as primary storage.
