Reformat from MAC os to PC

My son gave me an iPOD and loaded it with songs and movies I like. Problem I'm encountering is he loaded from his MAC and I have a PC. When I connected to my computer to upload some more songs the iPOD says I need to reformat. I don't want to loose what he has given me but also do want to make full use of the system. How can I save what is on and yet download and upload?

Hi ptbob,
Yes, you probably will need to reformat ("restore") your iPod through the iPod Updater if you want it to properly be recognize and function in iTunes
All you need is if your iPod is being recognized through "My Computer, though, to transfer music.
If it is being recognized by "My Computer", then you can transfer songs from your iPod to your PC a couple of different ways.
If your iTunes is set for "Automatic" in "Preferences -> iPod" (the default setting), however, connecting your iPod to iTunes now would automatically delete all the content off your iPod. This action cannot be reversed.
Instead, hold the "Shift" and "Ctrl" keys together for about 20-30 seconds as soon as your iPod displays “do not disconnect” to prevent any possible automatic syncing from happening.
Now, onto the transferring. There are a couple of ways to copy the songs over to your computer.
You can try the method of manually copying songs from your iPod to your computer by accessing your iPod's hard drive.
See this link for the details:
MacMuse - Transferring iPod songs to iTunes
If you would like a program to do this for you in a more automatic way, then select one you'd like to use from this list.

  • How do I make it so iWork docs don't have to reformat from Mac to iOS

How do I make it so iWork docs don't have to reformat from Mac to iOS?
When I edit docs and spreadsheets on my Mac with OSX Mountain Lion with documents in iCloud, they have to be reformatted when I go to open them on my iPad or iPhone.  This is minor annoyance but an annoyance nonetheless.  Is there a way to format docs on the Mac so this does not take place?

    Hello KatTreeRain,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Change the music video's *Media Type* to Video. To do this, right->click on the music video and choose *Get Info* and then head over to the Options tab. There you will see the *Media Type* option with a drop down list. This will move the music video to your Videos/Movies.

  • Reformat from mac to windows?

i got a 20 gig ipod from a friend who has a mac. i have windows. i want to reformat it but son't know how. also i want to keep the music he put on the ipod. is that posible?

Windows won't be able to read the iPod until you put it into a Windows compatible format. Unfortunately, reformatting the iPod will, inevitably, erase what's on it. The best way to get the music would probably be to have your friend burn it onto a CD for you, and then import it into your own iTunes library.
To format your iPod for Windows, you can do this two ways. The easiest way is to restore the iPod.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If, for any reason, you are unable to restore your iPod:
    1. connect your iPod and wait for your computer to realize something is connected to it
    2. double click My Computer and look for either "iPod" or "Removable Disk"
    3. if it is a removable disk that you see, make sure it is your iPod and not some other external flash drive you have connected to your computer
    4. right click on the removable disk and click "format"
    5. when the dialogue box opens, click "quick format" and then click "start"
You should then receive a confirmation dialogue telling you that your drive has been successfully formatted. After this, iTunes should open by itself momentarily, and allow you to set up your iPod (name it and set your sync preferences).
Reply if you have more problems / questions

  • Reformatting from Mac to Windows and hitting issues.

Recently got a new Windows computer that I moved my library to, so I needed to reformat my iPod. I was prompted by windows to format the disk, and I did using the default values (file system: xFAT; allocation unit size: 256kb) and then attempted to restore via iTunes. It tried and gave me an error (1415, I think? It directed me to this page). So I restarted the computer to try again, but now iTunes is telling me that it's detecting a corrupted iPod. It can't seem to restore it. Not sure where to go from here.
Any help with being able to restore the iPod properly would be great.

The iPod is probably OK, since the Restore works on the Mac.  And iTunes on Windows should reformat it for Windows during the Restore.  Don't know why it does't...
Since you have both Mac and Windows to play with, try this...  On the Mac, connect the iPod (with iTunes NOT running) and open Disk Utility.  The iPod should appear in the sidebar.  Select the iPod device (not the volume indented below) in the sidebar.  Go to the Partition tab.  For Partition Layout, select 1 Partition.  Click Options, select Master Boot Record, and OK.  Name it whatever you want.  For Format, select MS-DOS (FAT).  Click Apply.
When that completes, which should be in less than a minute, eject and disconnect the iPod.  Connect it to the Windows PC, and run iTunes.  Whether you are prompted or not, do a Restore.  Any difference?

  • Reformatting from Mac to Windows

I got a replacement iPod mini yesterday and it is formatted for Mac and I have Windows. Is there any way that I can reformat it so it's for Windows?

Plug it in, select it in iTunes and select Restore.

  • First Gen iPod reformat from MAC to PC?

Is it possible to reformat a first gen MAC formatted iPod so that it will work on PC? Also, is there a way to save the songs that are currently on it before the reformat so that I may upload them again on to it once it is PC ready? thanks

I highly doubt it because windows uses the FAT32 format while the Mac uses HFS Plus which is why windows needs a program like itunes to transfer files. So no i doubt you could do it.

  • Reformat external drive from mac os to windows

the windows partition on my mac book pro is close to full.
i would like to use an external drive formatted for windows for my growing number of pc games (gw,tdu, fsx, dirt - which run great on the mac book pro windows partition btw).
i tried to reformat a mac formatted external drive using disc utility, erase, format volume, but only choices were mac os extended and unix - no fat32, dos, or windows choices.
if i start up my mac book pro using windows, the drive does not show up in the 'hard drives' section of 'my computer'
please let me know how to reformat this mac formatted external drive so i can use it when the mac book pro is running windows.
    thanks

Hi Stefan, Turns out my old ext hd was corrupt. Bought a new 300G G-Drive and got a brand new problem which you may have heard of - the dreaded hal.dll crash. My windows partition crashed and after much effort I finally have everything working.
Had to go to the mac store to get a boot camp 1.4 disk (mine was the original) was able to save files from the corrupt windows partition to my mac partition. next i used boot camp to revert to a single partition on my internal drive, saving my mac system and files. next used boot camp to partition the internal drive into big mac and 31G windows. reinstalled windows. next using disk utility i split my 300G external into 10 30G partitions using your GUID suggestion and formatting in ms-dos(fat32) so my mac could read/write to it. dragged the files i saved to the 30G partitions and they work fine. loaded more games into the 30G partitions and they also are working fine.
could not have done it without your pointing out the GUID option.
    vielen dank, john

  • Reformat to FAT32 from Mac OS Extended

Bought iomega 320GB HDD formatted Mac OS Extended from Mac Store and was told to reformat to FAT32 simply go to Disk Utilities/Erase/Volume Format/FAT32 and voila!. Problem is, under Volume Format there is no FAT32 only Mac OS Extended (Journaled), Extended, Case Sensitive-Journaled and Case sensitive. Same on both my iMac and Pro and both running 10.5.5. I need to be able to transfer files (movies, photos, data) from my Mac and be able to read them on a PC running Vista overseas.

I had the same problem. But when I select MS-DOS (FAT) and erase the external hard drive, the format is still in Mac OS Journaled and then the sub drive is in MS-DOS (FAT). However, my XP PC still does not recognize the drive. How can I make it just MS-DOS (FAT)?

i reformatted my mac pro from lion back to snow leopard how do i get my music back. i have it on my iphone and when i sync up i still do not have my music on my mac how do i transfer it back to my mac.

Wow, you didn't make a backup of your files first?
You shoudl have come here first for help before doing that.

All I can say is make sure you have the same account name on the computer like before, even if you have to create a new user under System Preferences>accounts, then log into your itunes account with that and try to reverse sync from the iPhone like you would normally.
Apple doesn't expect one to go backwards, so they are not all that friendly, you may have to ask around on MacRumors for third party software that can reverse sync from iOS devices.
    Good luck

  • Transferring large volume of files from mac to PC?

Hi i have a mac with osx 10.4.8 and a pc, i need to transfer a large amount of files from mac to pc (around 200GB)
Now i have lots of external HDs which are all used by either the PC or the macs. the ones formatted for the macs cannot be read atall by the PC without some expensive software, the PC formatted one i have appears to be readable on the mac, but when i try to copy the files onto it or change anything, i am not able to change/add anythingn due to permissions problems.
Not sure what to do, i have quite a few HDs with plenty of sapce, but if they are all in the wrong format i cant really wipe/reformat them easily with files on them, nor do i want to buy yet another HDD just to transfer some files....
    Any ideas/advice?

  • Going from mac to pc- genius bar screwed me

Okay I had my ipod since january and I had a problem with it once, my computer was taking too long to recognize it. So I took it into the genius bar and he connected it to his macintosh, I am an adament PC user (i know i know i need to get a mac), I told him i use a pc and everything, My pc is not recognizing my ipod, im getting a message that says "Device is not formatted for Windows" so i naturally went to the restore so i can reformat it but the ipod updater says unable to mount ipod. I have 5k songs on my ipod now i need to add another k of songs and im so frustrated please someone help a fellow ipod user out. Basically i need to reformat my ipod from mac to pc using a pc cuz i dont have a mac.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
There are no songs on your iPod, right (since it was restored)?
Make sure the software on your computer is up to date...
    iTunes
    iPod Updater
    Update iPod's Software
Also, try connecting the iPod via a different USB port.
You may want to try putting the iPod in Disk Mode prior to connecting it and see if you are able to restore it (while it is in Disk Mode)...
    Putting iPod into Disk Mode
Finally, if you can't get the iPod to restore, then try connecting it and opening My Computer. Does the iPod show up in My Computer? Try right clicking it and going to Format. Does anything happen?

  • How do I reformat a Mac 30 gig I pod to windows. I get error message 1413?

How do I reformat an I pod from mac to windows?

    errollflynn2000 wrote:
I was told that I could reformat a external so that my Mac could read both Mac and Windows info.
Aside of using crappy FAT32 with its 4GB limitation or the not really better ExFAT, there are two alternative ways:
Enable your Mac to "understand" Windows NTFS.
There also at least two ways. MacFuse/ntfs-3g for the more experienced user ( http://macntfs-3g.blogspot.com/ ) or Pargon's NTFS for Mac ( http://www.paragon-software.com ) for the not so experienced.
Enable your Windows machine to "understand" Mac's HFS+ filesystem. on a similar way.

  • How do i save files from mac pro to an external hard drive

how do i save files from mac pro to an external hard drive

Your external drive is formatted NTFS which OS X can read from but not write to. You can either install third-party software on the Mac to enable writing to the drive or repartition and reformat the drive for exclusive use with the Mac. If you don't need to move files between a Mac and a PC, then I would recommend the latter solution.
    Tuxera NTFS 2012.3.2
NTFS for Mac OS X 9.5.3
    To repartition:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select the external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • Switching from Mac to Windows with no CD

Yes, I too fell in love at first sight with the nano, and will be giving my mini to my boyfriend (who got it for me in the first place). He uses PCs and Windows.
I did a search on reformatting the mini from Mac to Windows but all the answers seemed to involve installing the iPod for Windows software. I don't seem to have this anymore, and Apple helpfully doesn't provide it for download.
Sooo...how is my boyfriend to reformat my mini for PC? Will just plugging it into a machine loaded with iTunes for Windows do it?
Sorry if this is an often asked question; maybe what I should be asking is where or whether I can get the iPod for Windows software. Will whatever is provided with the nano work for the mini on a PC?

Download the latest version of iTunes and the iPod software updater onto the PC. Install iTunes, then the iPod software updater. Then run the iPod software updater, connect the mini when told, and choose to restore.

  • Copying files from Mac to PC network shared drives.

Copying files from Mac to PC network shared drives.
We have shared mounted drives in AIX Fusion that we can pull files from and copy to the mac, however we can not copy files from the mac to the drives.
“Error in user parameter list (-50)” With MS DOS-Formatted Volume.”
The drives are mapped on the mac using SMB. We can go to the files on the mac and use “save as” and this works and saves them on the shared drives.
We can not drag and copy them to the shared drives. Every time it fails and we get the above error. We can create folders but not move any files.
When we look up the error, it is referring to certain characters that can but used in a Max OS X filename and are not allowed in MS-DOS filenames. We are not using any of the characters not allowed.
The drives have all the basic set up in AIX, RWC. All the PC's we have can drag files to and from all our shared drives.

Either install software which enables the Mac to write to NTFS drives, or MacDrive on the PC, or reformat any drives you'll be using to share files between the computers as either FAT32 or exFAT.
