Reformat hard drive, but can't use monitor

I have an older iMac that I want to recycle or give away. The computer itself works, but the monitor does not, it remains dark.  I am able to access the hard drive via target disc mode.
Before parting with it, I want to reformat the drive or do whatever it takes  to  remove all of my personal info, passwords, etc . . .   But since I can't actually use the monitor, is there any way I can facilitae that?
Thanks

Put it into target disk mode, hook it up to another computer, launch Disk Utility, and see if the HD is listed. If so, erase and reformat selecting zero out data.

  • Running out of hard drive space---can I use my external hard drive-??

I have a 16GB iPod nano. I hope I can explain my problem well enough.
My laptop computer has the iTunes that I use for syncing my iPod. It has over 25gb of songs in it, but my problem is that it has completely run out of hard drive space, and I don't think I can delete anything else.
I have a 250 GB external hard drive that also has all my songs backed up on it, that has hard drive space left on it.
Is there a way to load new music into the external hard drive, that will sync up to the iPod when I connect it to the laptop, WITHOUT putting a copy of it into the laptop, and taking up space-?
The way it appears to me, and I may be wrong, is that there are 2 copies of eaxh song on my laptop---the one in my music folder, and then the one in the iTunes folder. Is that correct-?
OR, is there a way to remove some of the songs from the laptop, and put them into the external hard drive, but will still sync up to the iPod-?
Thanks for any help that anyone can offer, I'm desperate ~!
I'm not sure if this can be done, but I'd hate to think that I cannot put new music onto my iPod.
    Thanks~!

    Hello melbernai,
I think your best move would be to the move the entire iTunes library including of all of its file to your external hard drive and running your iTunes from there. You can even have it so that all newly imported music is saved to the external drive as well.
For more help on how to do this, I would check out this article on how to move and run your iTunes library from an external hard drive.

  • Need to move photos to external hard drive but can't find them in library

When we bought our Mac in 2005, we moved all of our photos from our PC onto the Mac, so I had pictures dating back to 2003. All of the photos we've taken since 2005 have been imported through iPhoto and show up in the library when we open iPhoto. However, through the library, I can't see any photos prior to 2005. I know they're on the system somewhere, because our screen saver is a slide show, and photos pre-2005 show up.
    My question is twofold:
    1) Where do I find those pre-2005 photos?
    2) I am out of space on my hard drive and want to move the majority of our photos to the external hard drive, but would like to keep a year's worth of photos on the hard drive. How do I move most of them to the external drive but keep some on my hard drive?
    Thanks for any help!

Were these pre 05 pictures imported to iPhoto too?
If so then your database may be damaged:
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
    2) I am out of space on my hard drive and want to move the majority of our photos to the external hard drive, but would like to keep a year's worth of photos on the hard drive. How do I move most of them to the external drive but keep some on my hard drive?
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk. Make sure the disk is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Now you have two full libraries.
    3. On your internal, delete the pics you don't want from iPhoto there.
Now you have a full Library on the External and a smaller subset on the internal.
    4. To choose between Libraries: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
Managing Multiple Libraries - including moving pics/albums/rolls and metadata between them - is greatly facilitated by using iPhoto Library Manager

  • Out of memory on hard drive but can't get rid of clips in Event Library

My hard drive has only 6gb left on it so I'm trying to free up space by deleting some of the clips in my Event Library. When I go to File - Move Rejected Clips to Trash, I get a message telling me there's not enough memory left to complete the operation. I have over 150 gb of material in the Event Library and most of the rest of the memory is used up in iPhoto. Also, previously, I tried to move a bunch of stuff to my external hard drive but had a horrible time recovering clips from it. Can you help?

Hi all... I had a very similar issue.  I had a hard drive replaced by Apple on my iMac due to a total hard drive failure.  I attempted to restore my last time machine back up through my time capsule but I get some type of sparse bundle package error.  It appears that something is coming back from the back up as I only have about 180GB remaining space out of 1TB.  Any advice?  It appears that Apple had re-installed the latest version of Lion back to my hard drive.  I'm completely distraught here as like Romantic Heretic, I have over a decade of information currently lost.
Any help with step by step directions would be GREATLY appreciated.
    Thanks

  • I installed FF 4 beta and lost all bookmarks. Found a bookmark file dated today on hard drive but can't open it because it's a json file.

Sorry, guys, I'm pretty lost. Spent the evening trying to redo a profile; found the profile on my hard drive but couldn't figure out how to change it back. I also read the FF help section quite a bit and '''tried''' to follow all directions but STILL can't do it.

JSON is [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JSON JavaScript Object Notation] format.
You have to use the Firefox Bookmarks Manager to restore the bookmarks from a JSON backup.

  • Just bought and connected iomega home media network hard drive but can't see it on network - HELP!

so per the information from my other thread i bought an iomega home media network hard drive. i've attached it to the westell ultraline series 3 9100em wireless router i got when i signed up for fios. i installed the software that came with the hard drive but it's not showing up on the network. when i log in to the router management console it shows up as the first device under "network stats". what am i missing that's not letting the drive get recognized on my network? as always thanks in advance for any replies.

    Hello jarmin2411
A factory reset from the web interface would correct this sort of issue.  However I suspect that using the pin-hole reset button should also be able to clear the issue as it seems to be a network configuration issue.  The network settings may have become corrupt during the update.   Using the device reset button

  • I have 2 external hard drives, but can not view photos from 1 hard drive in LR5 now. I used this hard drive in LR5 before, but now it does not show up. How do I get the hard drive to show up in LR5?

Any ideas on how to connect hard drive back into LR5?

    Hi:
Let's see if I can help you, help me.    Operating system is OS X, version 10.8.5.
The photos on hard drive (1) have never been removed from Lightroom (or have they?)They have not been removed from LR.
Could you explain why hard drive (1) stopped appearing in Lightroom, it must have been because you did something, otherwise the photos on hard drive (1) will still appear there.LR always worked great, until I had to upgrade my operating system to get LR5 to work.  Then it has been one problem after another.
So, once I ran into this problem and before we started to chat….I simply RE-imported all the photos from (1).  They came in fine, except none of their key words came along with them.  So my ability to find anything is "0".  It was bad enough to have to do the import all over, but the thought of having to re-tag 1000"s of images is overwhelming.
    Thanks for your patience.

  • Macbook Pro can open files from Touro ext. hard drive but can't save to it. Solutions without data loss?

    Hello,
I've looked around for a solution to my problem but I haven't found any specific solutions and I'm not comfortable in trying general ones for fear of loosing my data. Before moving I backed up all my document and music files from my PC to my Touro external hard drive. My main goal for buying this hard drive was to use it to store my itunes music library to save space on my computer and transfer my music from said PC tp my new MacBook Pro after the move. Today I set about doing so and was able to set my itunes up to pulll from the hard drive as well as load all the music I had saved on the hard drive into my MacBook itunes. The trouble came when I tried to download new purchases. It turned out I couldn't because itunes was unable to save them in the new file location on the Touro. I checked into it and I have the same problem with the documents as well; I can open anything already saved on the drive but I can't save any new files. It keeps on telling me I don't have permission to make edits. I'm afraid this mean I have to reformat the Touro for Mac but doesn't that mean I'll lose all that data? Does anyone know of any somlutions that would give me access to the drive without compromising what's already on it? I would just plug it back into the PC and see if I could adjust sharing settings, but it's all the way across the country now. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated!
                                                                Thanks,
                                                                     -G-

It sounds like your HDD was formatted under windows NTFS, which although your mac can read, it cannot write to that file format.
You will either need to transfer the data to another location while you reformat it as FAT on your mac using Disk Utility. Or you could purchase something like iPartition and change the file format to FAT which might take up to 24hours or so depending on the size of the drive. I have never had a problem doing this before but it's not guaranteed that your data will not be lost doing this.

  • 2 Macs sharing an external hard drive, but can't see each other's music

We bought a 300GB Lacie external hard drive, and pointed each Mac's iTunes to the same folder on that drive. Then the computer asked to "consolidate," which means copying all the music on each to that shared folder--which is great so far. But then in iTunes one Mac can only see the music it copied to that folder, and the other can only see the music it copied over. If I go into Finder, I can see both of our music, but in iTunes, no. There is some purchased iTunes music, but mostly just our own CDs.
What happened, and what can I do? Thanks!

Each computer (actually, each user account on each computer) has its own iTunes Library, which is a directory file. Moving computer A's music files to the new hard drive resulted in the Library file being updated to show the new location of the music that already was part of the Library. Moving computer B's files to that same location didn't affect computer A's iTunes Library file.
On each computer, you'll need to use the Add to Library command (or do the equivalent by dragging music folders from the Finder onto the Library icon in the Source panel of iTunes) to get all the music into your Libraries.
If the Copy files to iTunes Music Folder when adding to Library preference is ON (under Advanced\General of iTunes Preferences), then when you add music to your library, those files will be copied to the location in iTunes Music Folder location, if they're not already there. You may want to check these settings to make sure you won't end up with extra copies of music files in locations you hadn't intended.

  • Problem: installed new hard drive but can´t boot from leopard dvd

So I just installed a new hard drive in my ibook G4. At first I started up the computer using the leopard DVD I had purchased. Got to Disk Utility and after a few seconds in the spin wheel came up and froze. So, I shut the computer down and when I tried to boot it again from the DVD I wouldn´t even reach the apple screen. Tried it a few times unsuccessfully.
As an alternative I just tried booting the comptuer using the original CD and it did read it.
I am currently at the installer page but I am concern about installing the old CD as I really would like to run the leopard dvd 10.5.
Is it that my ibook g4 can´t be booted from leopard dvd?
    Please advise. thanks!!

OK, so I decided to leave my computer resting all night and give it a new try this morning.
This morning I was able to boot from the Leopard DVD, so I don´t really think it is a problem with my superdrive. Started to format at 32 minutes to complete. Then towards the 10th minute the spinning wheel appeared, I heard the fan running, then it stopped and then I heard the superdrive making some reading noises. Then all noises stopped and now the spinning wheel continues..not sure what to do now.
In the meantime, I wanted to share also another problem that I´ve been having for quite some time which I don´t know if it is related to my current problem. It is with the computer power:
    - I´ve been experiecing load surges that take my computer from 100% to 1 or 0% and then goes to sleep or shuts down. The same thing happens when I am charging the computer.. it starts charging and showing 2 or 3% charge and then jacks up to 100% in minutes.
    - My computer also makes like a slight humming noise sometimes when the ring around the power cable is in orange color, so I move it around until it stops. When I do that sometimes it goes from orange to green eventhough it is not fully charged. There has been times that under green it appears to be charging (battery charging icon on desktop shows up), and other sometimes like right now when it is in green color and the battery icon on the desktop says ´99%´. Weird enough, once I get the cable in a certain position it enables the battery to charge, if I keep it without moving it, the load surges disappear (at least for some days).
Should I try resetting the PMU? I´ve not done it because I don´t know what consequences it may have.
NOTE: When I bought the computer I never calibrated my battery because I was (and still are) clueless when comes to computer technicalities. I tried using a different power adapter and get the sample problem.
Below is the information I get from coconut battery:

  • I have installed a new hard drive but can not recover from the HP 2 recovery disks

    My computer: HP Pavilion dv9825nr
Windows Vista Home Premiu. SP 1
My old computer (I have a new HP  laptop) had a bad hard drive so I bought a new hard drive  - 488599-001, as recommended by HP.
When I try to restore using the diskds I bought from HP, I get an error: 0x400110020000100A.
Windows does not recognize the hard drive and I read somewhere tghat the Vista restore disks are problematic.
I'd appreciate any help you can give me. Good timing for expert day :-)

    Hi:
If you think you did something in the BIOS, just set it to its defaults, save and exit.
Here is what you need to do to make your own vista disk...
If you're up to a slight but rewarding challenge you can make your own if you can read your 25 character Vista product key on the PC.
Just download the 3 files you need at the link below, and read all of the instructions to create a bootable DVD installation disk using imageburn.
Disregard the part of the text under the first screen shot about "extract the files to the Vista folder."
The files were already extracted to that folder when you ran the X14.exe file by reading the text on top of the first screen shot.
The other thing I noticed is on the 4th screen shot, where it shows Developer ID Microsoft Corporation. I had to type Microsoft Corporation in myself, and then the other codes automatically populated.
When I went to compile the ISO file, ImageBurn gave a message that about a WIM file and ISO, and if I wanted to burn it in a different format.
I selected No, make the ISO file.
It was not that hard to do. I burned both the 64 bit disk and the 32 bit disk in case I ever need them.
I tested both of them on my hp dc7100 CMT desktop PC, they worked perfectly.
When you enter the product key, it knows what version of Vista you have.
    http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/software-os/w/microsoft_os/3317.2-3-microsoft-windows-v....
After you successfully install Vista, you can then install the drivers from your PC's support and driver page.

  • Hard drive full, can I use portable drive?

    Hello
I have just downloaded itunes as I have just purchased my first ipod. I started to put all my CD's onto my computer but have run out of hard drive space on my computer. I have a external hard drive that is capable of storing all my music. Can I put all my music on a portable external hard drive and get itunes to use that as the default music folder? If so how do I do that?
    Cheers
    kooze

Chris, Thanks for the quick response. I didn't Copy anything. I followed all of the directions step-by-step in the document http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305451, up to Step 10. The only step that I haven't done yet is #11, dragging my older C: iTunes location to Recycle Bin. I started iTunes as you said, holding the Shift key, but the start box is looking for a *.itl file which is not in my new "E:iTunes 10-2007" file directory. It did not move over during the Consolidation step. Can I move it into the new E: directory by dragging it. The Consolidation step also seems to have left behind an Album Artwork file directory. Consolidation only copied the actual music files in C:.../iTunes.

  • Installed a new hard drive, but can't install mac os X

Hi! I need some help. I just installed a new WD320GB hard drive in my new macbook, but when I try to install OS X on it I'm not able to. When I get to the "select destination, Where do you want to install Mac OS X" screen, the new hard drive doesn't show up. What do I have to do?

Or you could have purchased a case to power the new hardrive as an external drive, plug it into your laptop, format the drive, then copy the old drive using Superduper! to your new temporary external hardrive. Once you transfer your old hardrive onto your new hardrive (external), you would then remove the new hardrive from its external drive case, then remove your old hardrive from the laptop, and then install the new drive into your laptop. It should work like a charm after that. The best part is that you can install the old hardrive into your external case, format the old drive turn that into a backup external drive. I hope this all makes sense.
Anyway, this was just an idea that actually works best.

  • Hard drive failed, can I use an external drive as my main HD?

Took my 20" iMac to the Genius Bar today and my hard drive is completely shot. It would be $250 to replace it but I was wondering if I could run it off of an external hard drive or do I absolutely have to get a new internal drive? Any suggestions or ideas would help! I just don't know about dropping $250 on a 5/6 year old computer. Thanks everyone!

If you want, you can look up how to replace the drive yourself on YouTube and buy a new hard drive from Best Buy or any other computer store that sells Mac-compatible disks. I did this and I was able to save $100 by not having Apple do it for me.
I think it might be theoretically possible to run the system off of an external drive, but it's not that reliable. I tried it on my external drive, formatted it correctly and everything, but it failed about halfway through the OS X installation, so it may not work for you.
