Reformat - Now how to merge iPhoto library ?

After installing Lion my 18 mth old Mac Book Pro slowed down dramatically (windows like !)
I have reforamatted and reinstalled but now have a new account !! and 2 iphoto librarys
Can I merge the library's ??
Can I then delete one of the accounts ??
This is looking very messy and complex with one account
Joe Bloggs
and one I had to name ...
Joe BloggsX
I am very confused and want to start again with my original account/home floder and get back to one account.
Help .... please.

Rename the second iPhoto 2 library to something other that iPhoto Library and put it in the Pixtures folder next to the other library on your new MBP.  Then open it with iPhoto11 to convert.
Once both are converted to the same version you can use iPLM to merge them into a new library.
HOWEVER if you don't care about any metadata you might have in your last iPhoto 2 library you can use    SyncPhotos
to import the photos in your iPhoto 2 library into your iPhoto 11 library.
Here's how it works:
1 - it compares the databases and/or album.xml files of Libraries A and B.
2 - the files in A that are not in B are imported into B by copying the original files from A into B's Import folder.
3 - it then does the same for B.
4 - metadata is not copied.
It can be used to just copy from A to B and not sync both ways if desired. It will work with 2 libraries that are different versions, i.e. between an iPhoto 08 and iPhoto 09 library.

  • Downgraded OS from Mavericks and now can't open iPhoto library.

Updated to Mavericks which made my machine unusable. Consequently reinstalled 10.8.5, and now I can't open iPhoto Library without updating to Mavericks again and installing latest version of iPhoto. Any ideas how to make my iPhoto library compatible with iPhoto 7.1.5?

If it were me, I would be addressing why Mavericks did not seem to work.
Your machine easliy meets the minimum system requirements to run Mavericks and simply buying more RAM is not a valid fix for your reported issue.
If you are really determined to stay on Mountain Lion but now have an incompatible iPhoto library you could try a workaround -
    - Right click on the iPhoto Library, choose Show package contents, look for a "Masters" folder. All your original pics are located within this folder.
    - Hold down the alt key, whilst doing this, click the iPhoto icon on your dock and choose to create new to create a new "empty" iPhoto library
    - Go back to your Masters Folder and Drag individual folders accross into the already open iPhoto to import them. Each folder you drag in will be treated as an "event"
Having said all this, I would really be trying to upgrade to Mavericks again first before trying a "messy" workaround.
Why not let us know what happened after you upgraded before trying this?

How to use iPhoto Library Upgrader

    Hello Terence,
sorry that I come here with a completly different thema but I follow your answers since long and they are always excellent! And I do not know who could help... as I can not find the solution in Apple Support Communities.
I am very afraid with my MacBook Pro: midd. 2012
Prozessor: 2,3 GHz Intel Core i7
    4GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Intel HD Graphics 4000 384 MB
    Software: OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)
    Kernel-Version: Darwin 12.5.0
    iPhoto 11, Version: 9.4.3 (720.91)
    iPhone 4s, 64GB Version:7.0.2 (11A501),
    Symptoms:
    1. I have notice three days ago that Spotlight allways answers I should go to the web when I look for data in my computer. It seems that Spotlight can not find anything from my computer.
    2. Timemachine has no data before the 28th. January 2014 (!?) No idea why this happens
    3. In Finder window when I go to "Alle meine Daten"(= All my data) there is absolutely nothing there...it means 0 objekts are there.
4.In  Systemeinformationen (=Systeminformations) if I go to Software and then to Programs... there is nothig there because the Plug-In do not react quick enough (Das Plug-In hat beim Sammeln dieser Informationen nicht schnell genug reagiert). I am asking me which Plug-In it is and where to find it...
    5. On my iPhone the Photo-stream suddenly shows only 110 fotos from Dezember on, but in My MacBookPro the iPhoto Stream shows of course the lasts 1000 ones...from 25.01.2013 to 03.02.14 as it did allways before.
I am not going to sync anything until I discover what is going on...
    6. On my Contacts suddenly appeared the link address of a "game" in my own card ( both in iCloud and Lokal AddressBook)... and I have never ever played an online game (!?). So I deleted this two links as I discovered them some days ago...
I do not know what is going wrong here but I'm afraid to loose all my data in the computer, so I am making a secure copy in an external drive right now...
Could it be a virus inside... a software problem may be...?
The mayor  Problem is how to get the programms to work (Spotlight, etc), or how to repair them.
I'm trying to find something wrong in the Protocols I have here, for example
    - the Repair protocol for users from 27.01.2012 ( /Users/Begona/Library/logs/fsck_hfs.log).
    - the Datasystem-Reppairprotocol from 01.02. 14 (/var/log/fsck_hfs.log)
    - the Installationsprotocol from 04.02.14...
    but I am really lost.
Thank you very much for reading this, help would be high appreciated

how to make iPhotos library available to other users

To give others selective access to your iPhoto library, you have the option of using iCloud Photo Sharing, if the privacy implications don't bother you. The images will be stored temporarily on Apple servers.
If you want to give full read/write access to more than one user, see the support article linked below.
iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users
There is a way to share the library without moving it to a secondary volume. If you really need to do that, ask for instructions.

There are some wireless external hard drives that can be used with the iPad.
The Kingston Wi-Drive, which costs $50 for the 16 Gigabyte, and then $30 more for every 16 gigs more. It works by you turning it on and then accessing the files on it from an app that you download on your iDevice. You can access music, movies, and other stuff. No connections or anything, it works like a WiFi connection, you connect to it from the setting on the iPad under wireless networks.
Then there is the Seagate GoFlex, which some would recommend over the Wi-Drive. But this one costs $199 and had 500 Gigabytes of storage. It works the sameway as the Kingston: no wires, runs over its wireless connection. You can actually fit up to 300 HD movies on it.

  • How to open iPhoto Library copied from Macbook onto external HD, on my iMac ?

How to open iPhoto Library copied from Macbook onto external Hard Drive, on iMac?  "Not enough storage??" is message that appears.

How much free storage do you have on your iMac's system drive and on the external hard drive?
And how have you been trying to open the library?  Do not import the library into iPhoto.
You simply connect the hard drive with the library and double-click the iPhoto library on the external drive to open it in iPhoto. That will work, if you are using iPhoto 9.6, the only version of iPhoto, that is compatible with MacOS X 10.10.
Or hold down the alt/options key while double clicking the iPhoto icon. This will bring up a library chooser panel.  Select your library on the external drive.
If the iPhoto Library has been created by an older version of iPhoto it will need to be upgraded to the new version, and that may require temorary additional free storage on your system drive and the drive with the library.
If the library has been created by iPhoto 7.1.2 or earlier, you need to install and run iPhoto Library Upgrader, see:  iPhoto '11: About the Library Upgrader

  • How to merge iPhoto v2 libraries into one iPhoto v11 library

    Hi,
I just are going through a major upgrade from my iBook dual USB (500 MHz Power PC G3, OS 10.4.11) to my brand-new MacBook Pro (2.3 GHz core I5, OS 10.6.8).
As my old iBook was running so slow, I had splitted my libraries into two using IPhoto Library Manager some years ago running with iPhoto 2. Now I need to merge these two libraries into one and then transfer it to my new computer and let iPhoto 11 upgrade the library at once.
Based on very helpful earlier threats, I intend to follow the process below:
Merge libraries using iPhoto Library Manager (registered version) to get one library (on my old computer)
Copy this library into the Pictures folder of my new computer
Open iPhoto (shift key will give me the option to select if needed) and it will automatically upgrade my library.
So far so good - but I experience one issue I did not manage to solve. I use iPhoto Library Manager version 3.5.2 on my old computer, but after starting the merging process it tells me I need iPhoto version 4 at least; but I have version 2 only. I guess I cannot use iPhoto version 11 on my new computer as I first need to merge the libraries as old versions, as the iPhoto version 11 cannot work with the not yet upgraded libraries, can it? I have the IPhoto Library Manager registered version 3.6.8 installed on my new machine.
Before I make a major mistake to my pictures (> 20 GB): is it possible to upgrade both old libraries separately in iPhoto v11 and then merge them in iPhoto v11?
    Many thanks for your advice!
    Best regards,
    Markus

  • Why/how is my iPhoto library larger than the hard drive it is stored on?

I store my iPhoto library on a 2TB external hard drive. The library file itself claims to be 2.65TB and created 12 years before I purchased the computer (see pic). I have confirmed this on other computers.
I know my library to actually be closer to 680GB as I've been using it for a long time. When I click 'get info' on the drive itself, it shows it is around 945GB full which makes sense as there are other files also stored there.
Could someone please explain how a 2TB drive can hold a 2.65TB file? Then, could someone help me restore it back to its actual size? I would like to back up my library but can't easily move such a massive file. I am also worried about its stability as I presume something is corrupt in there.
    Thanks in advance.
p.s. When you look at the image below, you may notice other libraries (the one in question is highlighted). I have had MANY troubles with crashing libraries and gone through MANY rebuilds to get my library to where it is now; complete and working but oddly sized (and not appropriately backed up!). If I could easily and safely migrate all my photos, their originals, their edits, the places and faces etc to another program I would definitely consider it because iPhoto and Aperture are simply not behaving as I'd like them to.

I am unsure if it has been formatted MacOS but it is a My Passport for Mac so I imagine it was initially set up correctly - especially as it has worked well until now.
You can check that by selecting your external drive in the Finder and using the command "File Get Info ⌘I " on the drive. The General section of the info panel will show you the File System.
I have never seen that symbol in in iPhoto. In Aperture it is marking photos that have been downloaded from Photo Stream or Flickr or Facebook.  Are you syncing your library with any of these services?

  • How to copy iphoto library folder from Time machine to new hard drive

How do I copy my iphoto library and music library from my time capsule to my new hard drive?
I have a Macbook pro - 2.53 GHz - 4 GB memory.  I just replaced my hard drive to 500 GB and upgraded to OX 10.9.4. I created a new user account and login password for the new hard drive.  I copied my documents folder to external drive before the old hard drive failed, but I was not able to copy over my iphoto library or imusic library.  My old hard drive was regularly backed up on my time capsule (1TB).
I used migration assistant to transfer my user account to the new hard drive (1 of 3 on the time capsule).  The data transferred successfully, but at login the login name  does not match the user folder. Nor do any of my passwords allow me to login to the transferred username/account.  When I login to the account that I set up on new hard drive I can see the userfolder migrated in but the folders do not allow entry.
What can I do now at least to get my photos on the time capsule onto my current hard drive? Can I go into my time capsule like an external hard drive and simply copy over my iphoto library from the last back up of the old hard drive?

You probably tried to move a user account from your TC to your computer that was already active on the computer.. this is one of the no no's that pondini lists.
    See how to migrate. http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrateLion.html
There is a huge amount of info there about transferring files.. that you must not have a user account of the same name as the one you migrate.. and how to transfer files between migrated accounts.

You might need to fix up permissions or reset the password for the account.

  • How to Restore iPhoto Library from BackUp?

My iPhoto library has gone blank, although its trash has the 4,555 images. And all organization, albums, keywords, photo names, gone. Recently my backup storage, where library kept, went blank. I got a new backup, and a pro restored most of old data, and transfered to new one. So, I have the Library on the new backup, and need to restore it in the iPhoto Library, rather than create a new one, which as I understand will lose albums, keywords, etc. A friend says that way to hold down a key when opening iPhoto that will have it look for old library and restore? Not in Help or elsewhere.
I had a MacBook Pro, when this first happen. Now have iMac and have iLife 09, but don't want to instal it until photo library restored.
Sounds basic, but how to restore.
    Thanks,
    Armando

    Armando
The simplest way to restore is to put the Library in the Pictures Folder and launch iPhoto.
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' To select a Library.

  • Error Message (Arrow and Exclaimation Mark in Yellow Triangle) Showing on Bottom Right of Some Photos after Merging iPhoto Library into Aperture

The strange thing is that some of these said photos with an error message have a normal thumbnail and can be opened fine, but the others (most of them) just have an empty space in the thumbnail as if the image can't be found.
I tried to Locate Referenced Files as Leonie suggested in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3686982?tstart=0 but got this message 'The Selection Doesn't Have Any Referenced Files', so i presume that's not the issue.
In the thread mentioned above, Leonie mentioned something about not emptying trash. I did empty my trash recently, and started to think these images may have been poor quality ones i previously deleted in the iPhoto library … but that still doesn't explain why the error currently appears on some images which seem to work fine (these images are ok quality ones and there is no way i would have deleted them in the past).
Also - the 'Processing' message at the bottom of the browser seems to be spinning endlessly. I just left it for over 10 hours overnight and it's still going. Could this be linked to these error images which it's having a hard time finding/loading?
Quite baffled at the moment, and would really appreciate any feedback. TIA.
    EDIT:
I just looked more closely. It appears that most of my folders have duplicates of the same image with exactly the same file name. And all the images with the error message have them on both duplicates (i.e. one on an image that has an empty thumbnail, and one on an image that's fine).
When i initially tried to import the library, it proceeded half way then failed. After opening the iPhoto library in Aperture first, and then doing the import again, everything worked fine. So, i'm wondering if the images with errors that are empty/blank may be the result of the failed 1st import.
What's puzzling is why they weren't overwritten (especially since all the file names are exactly the same). When importing the library, i chose 'merge' instead of 'add' when prompted, thinking that would solve it. Obviously not.
    EDIT 2:
After reflecting on this, i thought one solution may be to:
    a) Find all the error'd images that are empty/blank and delete them, and then
    b) Find and remove all duplicates
So i followed Leonie's suggestion to create a Smart Album and use the 'File Status is Missing' rule.
But now, i see that there are images that i imported into Aperture months ago that have the same problem. And the new thing is that there are duplicates with errors where *both* images are visible (whereas for the iPhoto library i just imported, there were dupes where one version was blank and the other was visible and seemingly ok).
I'm really hoping there is a simple solution to this, and am awaiting some feedback before i try anything else.
NB. This is a super large (over 100GB) Aperture library that i am trying to consolidate everything into. It is Work In Progress and i was only going to back it up once the import of various iPhoto libraries was done. However, I'm wondering if it's better to just back up first - but if i do it now, the backup will include all these errors and duplicates. What would you guys do?

    UPDATE 2:
The users in these 2 threads seem to have a similar File Status Not Found issue:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4086569?tstart=0
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/17757686#17757686
Followed Leonie's advice to look for the (missing) masters inside the Masters folder, and indeed, they were missing. So, that confirms the reason for the error message.
If this does not work, because you have managed originals, inside the Aperture Library, look for your originals in the Aperture Library Package. Select the Library in the Finder and ctrl-click, then select "Show Package Contents" from the pop-up. In the Finder window that opens, navigate to the folder "Masters". Your missing images should be inside; the folder is structured by date of import.
Of course, the question is - why the masters for these few images are missing, when the other images in the same project that were imported/merged at the same time are fine.
Trying to do the library import/merge from iPhoto into Aperture again. Fingers crossed. Will report back on the result.

  • How to read iphoto library on WD passport across two Mac Book Pros an 08 and a 11?

    Hello,
      Please help!
I have a MBP '08 (mine) & a MBP '11 (not mine). I am copying all photos, video & itunes files to two external hard drives. Both computers are full and need to be emptied and the 2011 will be leaving my posession soon. My issue right now is with iphoto.  The 2011 laptop is running iphoto 2011. The 2008 laptop is running iphoto 2008. I am not in a position to purchase a 2011 iphoto upgrage for my '08 computer.
SO with all that being said,  I need to have all files from both computers boot from either external drive onto my 2008 Mac Book Pro right now (or any mac for that matter would be nice).  The first external hard drive is a WD My Passport 500GB, the second is a Mercury Elite-AL Pro 1T. So far I copied the iphoto library from both computers onto the WD Passport. Went in through 'finder', 'pictures', 'iphoto library', and simply dragged that whole file onto the external. Did this same process with both computers in the exact same way. With the 2011 macbook copy there were no issues other than when I went to see if the library would boot on the 2008 macbook it said the version on the '08 computer was not able to open because it was an older version than the 2011. First bummer. Then when I finnished copying library from the '08 macbook to WD I tried to open it on the 2011 macbook and it said the library has to be updated to the '11 iphoto version and then it would not respond in any later version.  Second bummer. That won't work for me as I will be operating from my '08 laptop only. The final glitch I encountered on my '08 laptop was when I finnished my copying and unplugged the WD, I went to open the iphoto app from my dock as usual on the '08 computer and it said it couldn't find my library. I did not delete anything! SO I went into 'finder, 'home', 'pictures', 'iphoto library' and opened it from there and all my pictures booted up in the app that way, but that's lame. I want it the way it was and don't see why it should've changed.
That's it! Pardon the long description. I don't know how to be more concise. I simply need all files from both computers to boot up from either external hard drive onto my '08 laptop using '08 iphoto if that's possible and I'd like my original iphoto library on my '08 to load up from the app in the dock like normal. How do I accomplish all this??
    Thank you or your time.

You can not open an iPhoto '11 library using any older version of iPhoto
Wne you opened the iPhoto '08 library using iPhoto '11 you were told that this would upgrade the library and it would no longer be usable by previous versions and you clicked OK to do that
And the iPhoto library must always be on a volume formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) - what format is the WD MyPassport?
YOu can purchase iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  and rebuild the iPhoto '11 library(s) using iPhoto '08 to downgrade it - see the IPLM FAQs for their instructions

  • Puzzled How to Import iPhoto Library

I have an existing iPhoto library. I go to File > Import > iPhoto Library... and select the Pictures/iPhoto Library folder. I then press Import, which presumably begins the process, but instead, it opens the folder (i.e., in the Finder pane of the file picker, it was showing Pictures and iPhoto Library with iPhoto Library highlighted. clicking "Import" shows iPhoto Library and its contents with nothing highlighted).
So, my question is, how to I tell Aperture 3.0.1 to import my iPhoto 6 library? It seems nobody else is having this problem or it'd be all over this forum and/or Google. What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks

I am also having issues importing an iphoto library into Aperture:
Yawwwwwnnn said that iphoto 6 won't import. News to me and now that I'm well informed, if this is in fact the case, what do I do? Upgrade at cost to Iphoto 8 for the privilege of importing into $200 worth of new software?
Hope not. I guess the key is doing less than a truckload import of files but as I just installed, my options are not clear. Any comments pointing me in the right direction would be very much appreciated.
    Cheers

  • HT6378 How to upload iPhoto library into iCloud Photo library?

    Hi,
I am having a MBP mid 2012 w/ Yosemite along w/ iPhone and iPad, all running 8.1. After having upgraded all devices to latest version, I wonder how do you get now the Mac iPhoto library into iCloud Photo library? iCloud Photo Library setting has been enabled on all devices.
On the iCloud, All Photos folder just shows a fraction of what's on my Mac iPhoto library, probably the most recent pictures I have taken and there's no sign of any automatic uploading as suggested by all Apple Ads...
    Thanks
    S

After having upgraded all devices to latest version, I wonder how do you get now the Mac iPhoto library into iCloud Photo library? iCloud Photo Library setting has been enabled on all devices.
iPhoto on your Mac is not supposed to work with iCloud Photo Library. The new "Photos" app for the mac will be able to do it. The release of this app  has been announced for "Early next year".
For now, only your mobile devices can upload to iCloud Photo Library.  So you have to upload your photos to the mobile devices to get them into iCloud Photo Library Beta.
That is not easy, because you cannot upload from your iPhoto library to your iOS 8 devices using iTunes with  iCloud Photo Library Beta enabled on the device. It will disable syncing photos with iTunes. As long as you are using  iCloud Photo Library Beta, mail the Photos to your devices or upload using Photo Stream.
