Reformated external hard disk still shows files and folders

Hello.
I recently bought an external hard drive, which I'm connecting by eSATA through the ExpressCard slot in my (now last-generation) 15-inch MBP, late 2008. I began getting disk errors and disk utility told me to reformat the drive. I reformatted it (as HFS, unjournaled) using through Disk Utility using the "write zeros" option, which took about 4 hours. What puzzles me is that Disk Utility still shows that there 9 folders and 16 files on the disk, with about 160 MB of space used. If I verify the disk, these numbers increase. Each time I erase the disk, they go back down to 9 folders, 16 files. Of course, in Finder, the disk shows 0 items.
Can anyone explain to me why this is happening? Should it be this way, or is something wrong here? I am still getting "keys out of order" errors even after this reformat.
Thank you

It sounds like it never gets to the stage of actually erasing any data. This may indicate a directory problem with the drive*:
http://www.macmaps.com/directoryfaq.html
Which could also mean something is wrong with the drive itself.
So if after repairing the directory, you still can't format the drive, I would assume that your drive is faulty, or the format you are choosing doesn't work well in your operating system.

  • External Hard Drive Not Showing Files

Hi. I'm really in a panic right now because school starts tomorrow and a problem occurred with my external hard drive today. Before I start, I would like to clarify that I use a Macbook Pro 15" (not Retina Display). Here is what happened:
Around 6 months ago, I was organizing the contents of my external hard drive into folders (i.e. "Movies" > "Romance," "Action," "Horror," etc.). In the midst of doing so, my laptop kind of froze and before I knew what was happening, the contents of the "Movies" folder was invisible. The "Movies" folder itself was still visible and accessible, but its contents were not. When I double-clicked the "Movies" folder, nothing would be shown. It was as if it was empty. The problem is that something was still taking up space on my external hard disk. When my friends asked to copy some of my movies onto their computers, I agreed and saw that they could access the "Movies" folder on their Mac laptops! This means that it was probably a problem with my Mac laptop. I decided to ignore it because I was still able to access the contents of the folder if I plugged in my external hard drive into my TV (it's an LG TV).
Today, I decided that I've had enough with the invisible folder. I needed to access movies from the folder and because I couldn't access it, I got very stressed and decided to repair it myself. It was probably one of the worst decisions I've ever made.
I opened Disk Utilities and clicked "Repair Disk" and then "Verify Disk." I then clicked "Repair Disk" again just to be safe (which was absolutely stupid in hindsight). Hoping it would have solved the problem, I ejected my external hard drive and plugged it back in. Once I plugged it in and opened it, I was faced with this:
There was absolutely nothing else visible in my external hard drive. The reason I'm still fighting to fix this and not throwing out the hard disk is that when I got the info of my hard drive, a lot of space was still taking up my hard drive. Here is what I did (the name of my external hard drive is "Mines of Moria"):
Mines of Moria > right-click > Get Info
Once the info was shown ("Mines of Moria Info"), I saw this:
Do you see how annoying this is?! It clearly states that there is only 17.78 GB left on the external hard drive meaning that there are a LOT of files on this hard drive considering its capacity is 1 TB, but I can't access or see anything inside the external hard drive! I tried to open my hard drive on my brother's Alienware (Windows 7), but it couldn't open it because its format. I also tried plugging it into my LG TV and the only folder visible is the "found.000" folder and I can't access it.
Please give me some advice as to what I can do as soon as possible. I am willing to go to a store to fix it, but I would much rather try to do it myself at home. I transferred all my movies from my laptop to this external hard drive because I had no more space on my laptop (yes, almost 90% of the space taken up on my external hard drive is used up by movies and episodes).
Please help me. I also have school files on here (granted, they are from two years ago, but you never know when you're going to use them). I'm a HUGE movie junkie and I've downloaded so many movies that I don't even remember what I downloaded last week (I just can't keep track of which ones I've downloaded when).
This is really important to me, so I would be VERY grateful for any and all relevant and helpful tips and advice.

The problem is caused by the third-party software you installed in order to make NTFS volumes writable. Refer to the developer for support. You might be able to repair the volume in Windows using the CHKDSK program.

  • External Hard Disk not showing up on Finder

    Hi
My HP Pocket Media Drive (USB), when plugged into my MacBook, does not show up on the Finder, even though it shows up on System Profiler. It only shows up on Disk Utility in certain occasions (such as after shutting down and starting up again). I have checked my Finder preferences, that external hard drives are shown on desktop.
I have tried resetting my PRAM and SMC too, but I still can't access the hard disk.
    Any help will be appreciated.

On the chance that your Mac has a phantom folder in its Volumes folder, with that external drive not mounted, invoke the Finder menu option Go > Go to Folder. Enter "/Volumes" (without the quotes) in the field and click "Go". In the resulting window if you see anything with a name that resembles your external drive, trash it.
Anyone know how I can have the external hard disk automatically mount onto my desktop (and thereby bypass the need for several click-thru’s via the finder window)?
Once you're able to mount that external drive, open the Accounts panel of System Preferences and click on the lock in the corner to authenticate if needed. Select your account on the left, then the "Login Items" tab. Drag the mounted disk icon into the window then close System Preferences. That disk should now mount when you log in. A Finder window will open, but you can close that manually. If that bothers you sufficiently, if you search these discussion groups you may be able to find threads that discuss how to work around that.

  • Using an external hard-disk with both mac and XP

I would like to use an external USB hard-drive to use with both my XP desktop and Macbook. This is mainly to store photo's and music. Am I right in believing this is possible so long as I format the disk in FAT32 first. Is there a file size limitation?

    Hi,
I was planning to buy the Western Digital 'My Passport Essential 160GB USB Portable Hard Drive'. If I formatted that as FAT32 - would that be ok. Also can I use it as my ITunes 'base'?
    Yes and yes.
But be aware that you can encounter difficulties with USB-powered external HDs, since such drives generally need more power from the USB port than a Mac and/or PC usually can deliver.
My personal choice would be to get a power supply for the external HD.

  • Extern hard disk not showing up

i used to use an older macbook, where my extern (it is a WD) would always show up.
it would also show up on other, newer, macbooks, even pros.
now i have gotten myself a macbook pro and it wont show up!
    what do i do?
    thank you in advance
    lauritz

Try the External HDD on an orher Mac if possible.  Do try all USB ports and other cables.  I have read that WD enclosures themselves can be the problem.  If you can swap the internal WD HDD into another enclosure, try that as well.
    Ciao.

  • JFileChooser not show files and folders

I had a java program using JFileChooser to open files. It worked fine on my Linux Redhat 7.
Recently, I upgrade to Linux Fedora 5. I found the FileChooser does not show any directories or files for me to chose from. It's just and empty FileChooser Window. It has a couple options by the "Look In:" combobox, but again there is nothing to chose from in the window where the folders and files should show up.
I download JFileChooserDemo.java sample program from sun's website, the sample
program has the same problem. I tried the same program on my window XP, it worked well.
I believe it's something related to system setting.
    Do anyone know what happened?
    Thanks.

I suspect that you are using the version of Java that comes with FC5. Try telling your application to use the version of Java you have downloaded from Sun (You did download and install a version from Sun). You can do this in several ways but two obvious ones are
    a) Give the full path to the java version you are using. On my FC5 this is
    /usr/local/jdk/jre/bin/java
    b) Place your jdk bin directory very early in the PATH so that the search finds it first.

  • Using ipod as external hard disk between macbook and PC

    Hello
I have formatted my ipod mini to the mac, but I also have a PC at home which I want to transfer files to and from. Can the ipod still be used as an external hard disk between the macbook and the PC or is that not possible?
    Thanks

If your iPod is formatted for Mac it won't run natively on a PC because the Windows OS does not support the HFS Plus file system and therefore will not see the drive. XPlay for instance gets good reviews and has the added functionality to let you copy your songs back to iTunes. MacDrive from the same company is not iPod specific it's for connecting any Mac formatted drives, if you want to use your iPod as a removable storage device it will work for that. You can get XPlay and MacDrive at these links:
    XPlay 2
    MacDrive
You can read another user's experience of using XPlay at this link: iPod on Mac and Windows

  • Can't mount my external Hard Disk

I bought a new mac book. I have been using an external Hard Disk with the laptop i am currently using. I tried to connect the 160GB external hard disk to my mac and it doesnt mount. It worked well for the very first time I connected, but then it showed up some error msg that the disk has been ejected improperly and the data might be lost. It doesn't even show up in the disk utility after I connect it. It works fine with my thinkpad though. Could someone help me with this....
    Help is greatly appreciated....

    hi there--
try an smc reset of the macbook http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319 and then see if the drive is recognized then. if not, then try a different port if there is one available, or try a different external device with the same connection type to see if all devices with that connection type aren't recognized. good luck.

  • Can not connect an external hard disk

    Hello,
For the second time , I have a problem while connecting a external hard disk. (the first issue was not solved).
Previously, I was triying to connect my external hard disk. But my powerbook 10.4.11 could not see it. I could heart my external disk "running". It was doing a small repeatitly noisy. But in the finder, it was not displayed.
Now I am triying with another one and I am experiencing the smae problem. Finder does not displayed it.
I guess the USB port does not display enough power. But I am not sure.
Do you have a idea how can I solve my proble in order to be able to see external hard disk and copy file in it?
    Many thank for your help

I connected the external hard disk to a pc and checked the in disk management management tools. I activate the partition of the external hard disk, then I reconnected it to my Powerbook 10.4.11 and FInder can not see it...

  • I have macbook pro 13.3 inch ..mac os lion 10.7.5   i want to tranfer data from macbook to external hard disk  without loosing data which in already in extrnl drive

i want to take back up of my macbook . so i have external hard disk around 1 tb and already have 230 used ...when i transfer manually with out time machine ....because i want to tranfer into windows .....so how to change ntfs into fat32 without loosing data in external harddisk ?

You don't have to change NTFS to FAT.
Just install Paragon NTFS and you'll be able to transfer your data to your external HDD even if it is NTFS.

    Hi,
    I am using Windows 8.1
I have an External Hard Disk i have partitioned it to 4 parts.
One drive is now inaccessible due to sudden power failure while listening Music from that drive few days ago.

  • How do i retrieve file vault protected files from an external hard disk that used to be my mbp's hard drive? the hard disk got corrupted and will no longer boot. I put it in an enclosure and attempted to copy my files but failed because of FV encryption.

This external hard disk used to serve as the main drive of my mbp. It got corrupted and the OSX would no longer load. I upgraded to a 500gb hd and used the old hd as an external drive. I tried to copy my files but i could not access them because of the filevault encryption. 110gb of hd space appears as used which means that my files are still in the drive. Is there a way to retrieve these files? thanks

According to your post, you're using Leopard, so FileVault only encrypts your user folder (unlike Lion). On the mounted external drive, in your user folder, you should see a file called username.sparsebundle, with username being your user name. Double-click that file to open it and it should prompt you for a password. Type in your password and the file will mount as a volume in Finder. You should be able to copy all of your files over.

My external hard drive will not open and only shows up in Disk Utilities. When I try yo repair it, it give me and error of invalid sibling link. How do I fix my external hard drive?

Invalid sibling link may not be fixable by Disk Utility. (Disk Utility is very conservative, and will not attempt repairs that might cause you to lose data.)
It is an indication of serious Directory damage.
    that leaves
    a) third-party Utilities that will take those risks, or
    b) re-initializing the drive (which deletes all your data) and restoring from another backup source.
    c) "Copying off whatever files you can salvage" has gone by, and you cannot copy anything off a drive that will not mount. You may be able to use "rescue" programs such as prosoft engineering Data Rescue to copy files to another drive, but that sounds a lot better than its reality. You may get many files, but not get ANY filenames.
