Reformatted computer - Songs need to be "Located"

Hello,
I recently reformatted my computer. After the process was done, and I turned on my computer, I tried to hear songs with Itunes. All my songs appeared in the library, however, every song I tried to play didn't work. Instead i got an exclamation mark and a message requesting me to locate the song. However, all the songs still have the exact same path - nothing had changed. It also may be important to note that my songs are scattered all over the computer, and are not orginized in the itunes' music file. Is there anyway I could do "Massive Location", or something of that sort?
Thank you very much!

Assuming the media is all located on drives other than the one that was reformatted, do the other drives have the same drive letters that they had previously? If not correcting those should resolve things. Select a track entry in iTunes, press ctrl-i to Get Info and cancel when iTunes prompts to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for where iTunes "thinks" the file should be. Where is it really? This should give some clues as to what might need to be done.
I do have a script to locate and reconnect songs but it mainly expects files to be located in some semblance of order, i.e. Artist & Album folders below a single parent folder. Just how scattered is your collection?

It's gone and you most likely are not getting it back.
If you had important info on it, you should have made backups so you would not lose the data.

  • Reformatting computer - do I need to deauthorize?

    Hi all,
I will have to reload Windows XP Home on my daughter's computer from scratch (using the backup/reformat disks). All of my daughter's documents, including the My Music folder will be temporarily saved on another computer, and then returned to the reformatted computer.
Do I need to perform a deauthorization on the iTunes music before I save them off in order for them to work on the newly formatted computer after I return them? I am not concerned with the music working on the backup computer.
    Thanks!

Its always best to deauthorize before this so you
don't end up using 2 of your 5 authorizations on the
    same PC
Hi - I'm not sure I understand. They're going back to the same computer, it's just that it will have a refreshed OS. Will iTunes think that it's a different computer?
    Thanks!

  • I just reformatted my Windows XP computer and need help transfering everthing from my iPad and iPhone back into iTunes

I recently had to format my Windows XP Pro computer and need to transfer all the iTunes information from my iPad1 and iPhone4 back to my PC. I could use some help, everytime I try it it says it will delete everything on my iPhone/Pad and reload everything from the new iTunes (now only 54 songs instead of the 342 that I have on my iPhone right now.)

You have a backup of your computer, or at the very least of your iTunes media, correct?
Simply copy your backup of your iTunes media into the iTunes library on your new computer.
Connecting and syncing your device to the new computer without first recovering your iTunes media is a really, really, really bad idea.  iDevices are designed to ONLY sync with one computer.  When you plug your device into a new computer, it will wipe all media on the device when it syncs.  The only media you may be able to salvage and transfer to the new computer would be anything bought directly on the device.
If you do not have a backup of your iTunes media, then you will want to look at a way (using software from a third party company)  to extract the media from you iDevice.

  • Reformatting computer- what will happen to iTunes?

So I have to reformat my hard drive, so I bought an external hard drive and I think I transferred my music to it. I just went through my iTunes and copied and pasted the songs that I don't have on CD onto my external hard drive...will that work? I couldn't find another way to do it.
So the dilemma I have now is when I reinstall iTunes onto my reformatted computer, what will I have to do to get those songs to play? Will authorizing my computer to play that music allow me to transfer it back into my computer, without having to keep my EHD plugged in?
Or is there a better way to transfer my music? There isn't an "iTunes folder" in "My Music".
    Can someone answer my question???
    Thanks.
      Windows XP

Just curious.....why do you think you have to take the drastic step of reformatting your system?
Assuming a valid need to reformat, an external hard drive (EHD) is a good backup solution for your situation -- also as an ongoing backup device. Copying your entire My Music folder to your EHD should do it. Just make sure that you really copied ALL your music files to the EHD. Also, you should verify that your iTunes folder is indeed inside of your My Music folder.
After reformatting and regenerating your WinXP system, just copy your My Music backup in its entirety to its former location on your system drive. Then, reload the iTunes software and you should be good from there. Several other experienced posters in this forum may have some good links to articles for further assistance. Gook Luck.

  • I get the icon for "The song can't be located

I get the icon for "The song can’t be located; it may have been moved or delete" but it is there and if I play it it does play.  However, it will not sync.  I have thousands of songs in iTunes and this appears on many of them.  Is there a quicker way of clearing the icon other than playing each track?

That icon does indeed mean that the file cannot be located (I just needed to confirm this, to avoid future confusion).
When you start iTunes, any external storage locations need to be ready to read and have the same drive letter associated with the drive as it did when you added the songs to your iTunes Library. If these conditions are not met, then iTunes will be unable to find the file.
In addition, if the file has been renamed, moved (but still on the same drive) or even deleted, by you, or any other programme, then once again, your iTunes will not be able to find the file, hence the exclamation mark.
I'm no experrt on NAS storage, but essentially, the file path to the song's file must remain constant. iTunes looks for the files as soon as it starts up.
If all your Librayr is external to the computer, you could try re-linking the whole Library to iTunes. Alternatively, I think it's going to be one at a time.

  • Computer Crash need info

A computer that I am working on has crashed, and windows is no longer accessible. I was able to access the file system via another computer. I am trying to transfer over purchased I Tunes songs and movies from the hard drive. What do I need to do to make sure that the songs and movies are accessable when I load them to the reformatted computer?
    Thank You
    Kyle

Basically log back into your Apple account and then authorize that computer.

  • I transferred my itunes to an external hard drive from my mac, now all of my music needs to be located. Help...

I moved my itunes library to an external hard drive, now all of the music says it needs to be located. Not sure, but I believe it is not directed properly.

if you do iTunes > Preferences> Advanced you can change the location of where your music is stored.  Click on change location and direct it to your external hard drive.  Of course, your external hard drive will need to be connected to your computer to play the music.
When you moved your music to an external hard drive, did you copy the folders or move the folder off your computer completely? I copied the folders, and left iTunes folder in my Music folder and all seems to work fine. one hitch can be is that your Library in iTunes will list all of your content, but if you have some albums on the hard drive of your computer and some on your external hard drive, iTunes will need to be told where to locate these files.

  • How do you get I tunes to automatically skip songs it can't locate?

I really don't like the latest upgrade.  Getting rid of the coverflow is a bad idea.  It was one of the things I liked about Itunes, so might not bother with Itunes anymore.
However, in the meantime, when playing all my music before the upgrade it would just skip songs it can't locate, which will happen a lot for me.  Now though, it stops playing and brings up an error message, giving me the choice to locate the file, or cancel.  If I click cancel, then Itunes stops playing.  This is really frustrating.  Is there a setting somewhere, or is it another reason for me to want to leave Itunes?

Can't really remember if that's possible, as I don't have any desire to do that, but I think you need to put them in a playlist.

  • When I click on a song in my iTunes library I keep getting a message telling me that the song could not be located. What is going on?

When I click on a song in iTunes Library I keep getting a prompt that says the selected song could not be located. What is going on?

iTunes can't find your media files, which are normally located in ~/Music/iTunes. Try a Spotlight search on your computer for your media files, and move them back into that location. If you can't find your files, then try going to your backup drive, if you have one.

If you Google ipod nano 6th generation manual, you can download the PDF manual. Here's a quote from page 19:
Transfer purchased content to another computer:
1 Open iTunes on the other computer and choose Store > Authorize This Computer.
2 Connect iPod nano to the newly authorized computer.
3 In iTunes, choose File > Transfer Purchases from iPod.
Songs that are not from the iTunes store can be copied to the new computer, and you just have to do File>Add to Library to get them into iTunes. And if you don't plan to continue using your old computer, you should deauthorize it because you only get 5 authorizations for iTunes store purchases, and this will cancel out the authorization on the old computer.
