Reformatted hardrive, copied files from backup, but won't boot.

Hi,
I reformatted my hardrive to remove partitions and then copied back all folders from a backup of my files (including the OS X 10.3.9). When I restarted the computer (PB G3), I simply get the folder with ? flashing indicating it cannot find the System. The disc is fine and can mount through firewire. I tried repairing with DU via firewire to another PB, but no change.
One important issue - when I intitially copied my files to a backup, a message came up saying some files could not be copied. Are these the issue?
Is there any way to get the system to reboot or do I need to reinstall the OS?

Do you recall if the Security Update 2006-004 (10.3.9 Client) got installed? (It was created Aug/01/06 so it would have been done recently)
Another easy way to see is that the prior Finder version is 10.3.2 while the SU Aug. 1-06 installed Finder version 10.3.3
That one kind of loused me up a bit when having my Home (folder) items copied over from a previous backup.
The bottom line--- If Finder loads in rather smooth no problem, however if Finder responds slugishly you may need to run the update.

Recovering files from mac that won't boot?

The other night when I was reading on my Macbook Pro, it randomly started giving me the spinning-wheel-of-death. I waited for about 15 minutes, but ended up shutting it down in the end because it was still frozen. I tried restarting, but now it won't boot past the grey screen with the apple logo. I tried multiple times, and eventually it would try to boot, get to the grey screen, and then just shut off.
I got it to bring up the OS X recovery page, and tried to verify the disk (the internal hard drive), but it told me I needed to repair it. So, I tried to repair it, but it told me it had stopped and that I needed to remove my files from the drive, reformat the drive, and then put them back on.
I'm not sure what the next steps are here... I've heard that there is a way to use a firewire 800 cable and another mac book to help remove files if my computer won't boot. Is this a good option for trying to save my files, and if so, can anyone explain how to do this for me?
Is there anything else I can do that might bring my darling Macbook back to life?

Will the button not restart it or even from the menu bar? And what exactly is wrong, what are the symptoms? Will it not boot up or just not restart? But ya your best bet is to boot into target mood. If you cannot turn off your computer with any button (but it does turn it on) I would say let your battery die completely or remove it. Then hook it up via firewire to another mac, plug it in, and hold T as you turn it on, this will put it in target mode and allow you to retrieve your files (assuming the hard drive isn't dead which could be a near possibility from what you described. Good luck, if you have more info as exactly what is acting up, maybe we can find a better solution for you. Otherwise good luck.

Windows Explorer EXTREMELY slow at copying files from network, but robocopy works

Hi guys,
I'm having a REALLY BAD performance issue when copying files over from SAMBA 4 to any Windows 7 computer. To copy a folder containing 50 files with a total of 10 MB using the explorer it takes about 20 minutes (!!) at a rate of 3-5 KB/s, but when using robocopy
the same folder takes like 3 seconds to complete. Also, the issue does not occur with older versions of Windows, like Windows XP and Windows Server 2003.
Please please please come up with some ideas except the usuals like disabling Remote Differential Compression, disable autotuning using netsh, setting local security policies for NTML authentication or trying new switches / upgrading network drivers or windows.
I DID IT ALL, but nothing helped!

Cannot copy file from backup DVD to HD folder

Whenever I finish a project, I had burn the various files (movie, text, pictures, pages, etc.) onto DVDs to free up hard disk space for present projects. Usually, I would use a disk image to burn those DVDs. Recently, I needed material from those DVDs and I found that I could not copy them from the DVD to my work folders on my hard disk by dragging them from the DVD window to another open window. I could only do it the roundabout way of opening those files individually using the programmes (like pages, iPhoto, etc) and then use the 'Save As ...' option in the File Menu. It was a huge hassle. I then looked into my other DVDs and found that they were the same way. I find DVDs easier to manage. Is it because I am using disk images or is there something wrong in the way I burn the DVDs. Please advise

When I try to move the files from the Finder Window with the files on the DVD, I do not get the plus sign when I try to drag it to the desktop or any other window. Even when I try with the option key pressed, there is no plus sign with the mouse arrow. Someone suggested to use the terminal and I did. It was a hassle, though.

If you're old phone that was repalced was a higher version of iOS, it wont be able to restore. Update your iPhone to the lastest iOS 7.0.4 and try to restore it then.

iWork (no 's') for iOS & iWork for Mac have not gone away.
iWork.com (beta) (also no 's') is going away the end of July. iWork.com (beta) is/was an online method of sharing iWork files with other users & never moved out of beta in 3+ years. It is a completely different entity than the iWork apps & is not & never has been necessary for the iWork apps to function.
A Numbers document, as well as Pages or Keynote documents, cannot be opened on a PC. You must first export them to a file that a PC can use. For Numbers that is generally Excel. In Numbers on your iPad tap the wrench & then tap Share & Print & choose Excel as the file type.
As for transfering a file from a PC to an iPad, I'm not sure as I don't use a PC.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
When you try to copy data to the external drive, what happens? If you don't see any error, the external drive is formatted in NTFS, and OS X can't write in it.
To be able to write on this external drive, you have to use an app like Paragon NTFS. Another solution would be to format the external drive in FAT32 or exFAT with Disk Utility > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html Make sure you copied all the files of the external disk to the internal disk before doing it

Is synching over wi-fi viable? I've never done it, but when I tried something similar back in the old Palm PDA days, it was S-L-O-W, slow as molasses. I realize that the i-device are far more modern with faster processors, but wondering whether it's even worth exploring doing this.

Can't copy files to backup disk

Got my new iMac core duo a couple days ago. First noticed I couldn't get it to copy files from my old G4 laptop via FireWire. Today I wanted to backup from the new coomputer to my external backup drive, but if the backup was large enough for the progress bar to show up, it would hang. Wouldn't let me cancel or anything, and I had to shut down the external drive. Kept trying to copy items one at a time but still would get this problem. Sometimes the progress bar won't go away even if I power down the ext. drive, and I have to do a restart. Extremely annoying!
Also, on occasion, when the computer goes to sleep it will forget I have a wireless trackball (Logitech).
Other than that, I love it!

Well it turns out there was a bad firewire port on the external drive. Now if I can just keep it from losing contact with my trackball when it sleeps.
Some people say to never let the Mac sleep, but others say you have to leave it on at night so it can do some Unix maintenance. Anybody know what the answer is?

Restoring Files from Backup - Firewire Drive

I recently performed a complete re-install of Tiger on my iMac G5, and it is working nicely now. I used SuperDuper to back up the my hard drive to an external firewire drive before doing the install.
Here is my issue: When I try to copy files from the firewire onto my internal hard drive, I get this message: "One or more items have special permissions and cannot be copied. Do you want to skip them?" For example, I received that message when I tried to copy SuperDuper from the firedrive into my internal drive.
I do not want to bring everything from the backup onto my machine since I believe it was software that might have caused my issues which led to reformatting to begin with.
Is there a way to bypass this error? A key combination, perhaps?

For apps, I would reinstall from the source. There may have been corruption over time. Most Mac OS X app files are not single files at all, but a package, which is like a folder. You can look inside by right (control) clicking on an app and select +Show Package Contents+. Some apps that use an installer program may also place support files at +Library/Application Support/+, both at the root level and user account level; you may not know about those files. Also, there may be a newer version available (for downloads) that you didn't even know about.
However, for the apps that were drag-and-drop installations, it should be OK to do the same from your backup, if you don't want give your apps a fresh start along with the OS reinstall on a blank volume.
FYI, there is a way to get a fresh Mac OS X system without reinstalling apps, or even restoring your user data. You use the +Archive and Install+ option in the Mac OS X Installer. This will retain user accounts and settings, as well as third-party apps, while installing a fresh system. You should still backup your data as a precaution (since something bad could happen), but your data should still be there when you restart into the fresh system. Your installed non-Apple apps should also be there, although you may need to reinstall or re-register some apps. The bundled Apple apps get reinstalled.
As for your immediate permissions issue, try copying it from the external drive into the Shared user folder at Users/Shared/. If that works, try moving it from there into your user account folder

Can't copy files from mounted DMG. What's up??

So all of a sudden, I can't copy files from mounted DMG files. It's strange because if there is one file and I drag it to another location, like desktop, it won't copy. If I drag 2 files from the mounted DMG to the desktop one of them copies. If I drag 3, then 2 copy... it's always all but one of the files... never all of them.
I've tried repairing permissions but nothing works. I'm at a loss...

Try holding option when you drag the files. This tells the mac to move the files to the desktop of your computer not the desktop folder of the DMG (usually a hidden folder)
If that doesn't work it may be that you need administrative privileges to move the files. Make sure you are logged on as as an administrator by selecting the account tab in system preferences and making sure it says "admin" under your user name. Log on to or create an administration account then try moving the file.
