Reformatted ipod nano using disk utility - no longer works

Idiotically I decided to use disk utility to reformat my 8Gb iPod nano (5th Gen) as I wished to use it temporarily as a USB drive compatible with Mac and Windows. Now that I wish to use it again as Apple intended, I find that iTunes does not recognise it in the Source list.
It shows up fine on the desktop and when the iPod is charged, it always asks me to select a language, and then comes up with the menu screens (music, videos etc) but it is empty with no data.
I tried following the instructions in this support document http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3540 but was foiled at step 5 as I do not have the file they wish me to trash.
Any clues on how I might go about fixing this? I would very much appreciate any assistance!!
Cheers

Hello kismet_kracker,
Maybe trying reformatting it again via *Disk Utility* except this time, change it's file system type to Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) and see if that helps.

  • I erased my iPod nano with disk utility and tried to restore but I get a 1430 error and it never restores.

Ok so I tried to connect my iPod nano to my computer, but when I opened iTunes, the iPod automatically ejected. I thought that restoring it would fix that, but since I couldn't restore it in iTunes because it kept ejecting itself, I decided to erase it using disk utility. I read on here that it's possible to do that. So then my iPod said to restore in iTunes after I erased it, so I did, but it failed with an 1430 error. How do I fix it? Is my iPod destroyed for good?

Take a look at this support document regarding that error. iPod: Can't restore or update in iTunes with error 1415, 1417, 1418, 1428, 1429, 1430, 1436, or 1439 - Apple Support

  • Disk Utility no longer working

I use Disk Utility whenever my Mac starts acting quirky, and for years this has seemed to do the trick. I would find a number of permissions that needed repairing, and that was that. But lately, it doesn't seem to be effective. When I try to repair permissions, I get a list of "repairs" that never actually get done (I know this because I have run DU twice in a row and get the same list each time), and I get no satisfaction in terms of performance afterwards. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Here's what I'm getting in the report:

    Permissions repair complete

    A few suggestions:
    1. Download Onyx, it's free. They also have a permissions repair routine, see if it does something different. Disk Utility is kind of basic.
    2. Not all performance issues are permissions related. You could have out-of-date software, a bad hard drive, etc. If you have the AppleCare extended warranty, then use TechTools to analyze your disk. Or if you don't, then use Disk Utility.
    3. Take a look at this website. There is more info there than you could ever imagine, I'm only 15% through it, but I've gotten a lot of hints on how to upgrade performance.
    I hope this helps.

  • Ipod freezes using disk utility

I am yet another ipod owner whose ipod (40 gig 4th gen clickwheel) freaked out when I updated to the latest firmware and itunes.
My computer (new imac g5 running 10.4.2) asks to initialize my ipod when I connect. Disk utility freezes when I try to erase my ipod HD. Repair always ends in failure.
Is there another disk utility software (such as drive genius, diskwarrior, etc.) that I can use to fix my ipod's hard drive?
Before I invest the money, has anyone fixed their ipod this way or am I looking at permanent HD failure?

  • USB erased on Disk Utility; no longer working...

Hi, I noticed my USB was getting full after deleting tv episodes (deleting old to replace with new) so I erased the disk in Disc Utility.
The USB (Sandisc Cruzer) still works on my MBP, ie I can open it to transfer files, but when I plug it into my DVD player it doesn't recognise that anything has been plugged in. I've tried the same in a different DVD player with the same results.
Can anyone help with a resolution to this, as all was working prior to me erasing.
    Cheers

The USB drive gets full despite deleting the files because you forget to empty the Trash. When you delete a file, it goes into a hidden directory on the drive called ".Trash". If you don't empty the trash, the disk is just as full as it was before, you just can't see the files. Eventually, there's no space left on the device, despite not being able to see the files (actually, if you look in the Trash, the files are there).
If you reformat the USB drive and intend to use it with your DVD player, you want to format it as an MS-DOS formatted disk (presumably with an MBR-type partition table). By default, Disk Utility will use the Mac HFS+ filesystem (and, if you change the partition table, GUID). This would mean that the disk would work fine with Macs, but not PCs or consumer devices expecting a MS-DOS (actually FAT-32) formatted device.
Reformat the disk using the MS-DOS filesystem in Disk Utility. You will not be able to recover any files from the partition. After deleting files from it, make sure to empty the Trash.

  • Disk Utility no longer working correctly

I did a search and couldn't find a similar problem, so here goes.
    I'm running OS 10.4.11 on a G4 PPC Dual 1.25 GHz.
I've done the regular updates the last several weeks:
    QuickTime-7.5.5
    iTunes- 8.0
    Xserve RAID Driver Update- 1.0
    Java for Mac OS X 10.4, Release 7- 1.0
Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update- 2.2
    Security Update 2008-006 (PowerPC)- 1.0
    Security Update 2008-007 (PowerPC)- 1.0
Migration and DVD/CD Sharing Update- 1.1
    iTunes- 8.0.1
    iPhoto Update- 7.1.5
Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update- 2.3
    Safari- 3.2
    iLife Support- 8.3.1
    iTunes- 8.0.2
    Safari- 3.2.1
Since the updating of the above, when launching Disk Utility, I get the spinning beachball as it tries to find my hard drives. It spins and spins and spins, but my drives don't show up.
Sometimes logging out and back in and then restarting will make DU work ok, but that can't be normal. It should work on each launch.
Is anyone having similar problems? Anyone know what the cause and solution may be?
Thanks in advance for any help, and Happy Thanksgiving!

    Hi,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, or things don't load/run, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.
The combo update for PowerPC-based Macs...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateppc.html
The combo update for Intel-based Macs...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateintel.html
Repair Permissions before & after re-install, then reboot again each time.
If all the above do not resolve the problem, then it's time for an Archive & Install, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Or, Might give a try with Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.

  • Software Update and Disk Utility no longer work (Leopard)

Hello. After upgrading yesterday from 10.4.11 to 10.5.0 then updating to 10.5.1 I find that repair / verify permissions no longer works (it just hangs after starting).
And the same with Software Update, it starts the check then just hangs. Grateful for any ideas!
Overall I am finding Leopard much slower in operation than Tiger. Peter

Create a new admin account with Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Accounts and see if the issue duplicates itself logging into that account. That will say if the issue systemwide, or just localized to the a bad user cache file. If the issue persists in the new user, you can try looking in the System -> Library and Library -> Cache, Applications Support, and ByHost folders for cache files relating to Software Update and Disk Utility. Once you find them, carefully extract them to comparable folders on your desktop you create (i.e. name one systemlibrarycache) so you know where you go them from, and restart your Mac. If the issues go away after two restarts then it is just one set of bad cache files. If the issues return after two restarts, you have something generating bad cache files which needs a more system wide repair tool.

  • Disk utility no longer working, any alternative HDD maintenance prog?

    Hi all,
I have an early 2003 Powerbook G4 12" aluminium. 80Gb HDD with about 4.5Gb free. It's running very slowly but I hardly tax the machine so I'm not too bothered, but I tried to run Disk Utility to make sure everything was ok and it couldnt even verify permissions. It said it might take several minutes to run the permissions, but after 20+ minutes I gave up.
Is there any alternative free program that'll check all the important bits and make sure things are fine?
I used to use OS9 and ran things like Techtool lite and Norton speedtools; zapping the PRAM, optimising the drive and that sort of thing. I get the feeling the HDD on this powerbook is fragmented to ****, but then I didn't think Macs slowed down from such things like a PC.
But its made me realise I don't have any kind of housekeeping tools to keep my now OSX machines running (those being the G4 powerbook and a Quicksilver G4, running Leopard and Tiger respectively).
    Many thanks for any help.

Are you running Disk Utility using your Tiger install DVD? If not, you need to.
Another popular utility is Disk Warrior (more powerful than DiskUtility), however, it costs about $100.
You don't have enough free space on your hard drive as it is typically recommended to have 10-15% free.

  • Disk utility no longer working after 5.3.1 upgrade - urgent!

After all of my talk about not becoming an early adopter, this happens - tonight I upgraded my AirPort software to 5.3.1, but after resolving a brief episode of not being able to connect to my AEBS, I was able to restore my Internet access. What I haven't been able to do is mount my USB hard drives. They are visible when I open AirPort Utility, but no matter how many times I try to adjust the settings - changing passwords, even allowing guest access - the hard drives do not stay mounted. The moment I click on one of them, I get the spinning wheel and then the "disconnected from server" error message, and poof, they disappear. What's more, I tried to "downgrade" back to 5.2.1, but I'm not allowed to. I have more than 300 GB of files that I can't gain access to, so this is a serious problem, especially since I have two computers. Help is urgently needed.

I suggest you get a proper NAS with a USB port and hang your disks off that - solved all my problems...

  • IPod nano 4th generation backlight no longer works.

After 2 years of faithful service my iPod nono no longer allows me to view the screen without the help of a bright light pointed at the screen. I tried the 5 'Rs' in the manual, it is fully charged, plays as it always has but without the backlight. Please help.

If the 5 R's didn't address the issue, it's likely hardware related, meaning you'll need to have your iPod serviced in order to gain full functionality of it again.
Otherwise, it's time to start saving for a new iPod.

  • Cannot format iPod using Disk Utility

My iPod (5th Generation) has been displaying a -48 error for weeks, and i tried to follow the advice to format my iPod using Disk Utility. However, after leaving my iBook 1.2Ghz G4 on over night with Disk Utility erasing it, the little bar was still stuck on partitioning, never moving. What can i do?

try reset in iTunes. Then follow the steps in Jason Creasey's excellent procedure in the long thread ref Code -48. Good luck.

  • External harddisk became extremely slow after reformat using disk utility

hello everyone~ let me try to describe as clear as possible!
to start with, i have 2 external harddisk:
    hd(A)-120G, format in Mac OS Extended (journaled), it's and old harddisk and is nearly full;
hd(B)-200G, format in MS-DOS (ie. FAT32), it's a new harddisk with plenty of space.
what i wanted to do: make both hd(A) & hd(B) read & writable in mac & windows.
so, i tried to move all files in hd(A) to hd(B), hope to reformat the hd(A) to MS-DOS. but then i found out many big files can't be moved to hd(B) at all, and then i found out there's a 4G limit to the FAT32 format.
then, i tried to format hd(B) in NTFS, hoping that it can be read & writable with the help of MacFuse in both mac & windows without file size limit. so i downloaded and installed the MacFuse in my mac and format the hd(B) in a PC with Vista. well i was a bit impatient.. so i chose quick format only. then i plugged it in my mac~ yes it's readable & writable!! but the speed was like... 2mbps.......yes, 2MB per second. i really can't stand this speed! i thought it's becoz of the NTFS format... maybe it makes the transfer speed slow in mac?
so finally... i reformat the hd(B) into Mac OS Extended (journaled) using Disk Utility in OSX. i gave up the idea to make it usable in both mac & window.. i juz want the bigger harddisk to serve as a backup storage harddisk and i'll be happy with that already. so, after the format, i started moving files from hd(A) to hd(B)...and....well... the speed remained at 2MB per second.... which means, it takes like an hour to transfer juz 2G or so... i think the speed is very strange right?? maybe i messed it up making it different formats one time and another... and i dunno what to do with it now!!
    anyone...please help me?? =(

Hi aniDa, and a warm welcome to the forums!

  • Reformat external hard drive for Windows machine using disk utility

I have a Maxtor 160GB dual-interface external HD. I used it for my Mac OS X. I erased and reformated the hard drive on my Mac to MS-DOS using Disk Utility for use on my fathers Windows XP. I hooked the hard drive up to the Windows machine and the hard drive was visible in both Windows Explorer and on the task bar. I right clicked on the hard drive and selected Format. The formatting takes a while but at the end an error appears indicating the hard drive was not formattable. How can I get a MS-DOS formatted hard drive (from a Mac) to be used on a Windows XP machine with a NTFS format?

    Turns out it is possible:
    Maxtor Support..
I would use your Disk Management utility within Windows to repartition and reformat the drive. To access Disk Management, right click on My Computer, go to Manage, and then choose Disk Management. Within Disk Management the drive should show in your list of disks (Disk 0,1,2 etc etc). I would delete any partitions that are on the drive. To delete a partition, just right-click on the partition and choose delete. Make sure you’re deleting the correct drive. Once the entire drive says unallocated then the drive should be ready to partition and format. Just right click within the Unallocated Space on the drive and choose the New Partition or New Volume option to set up the drive.
I followed the instructions and everything worked.

  • Using Disk Utility to erase SDHC card taking too long

So... I had this 32 gb memory card that neither my camera nor my computer would read (iMac running OS 10.9.5 Mavericks and the camera's a Canon Power Shot SX40HS, just in case that matters).
I decided to try erasing the card using disk utility just to see if anything would recognize it after that, since nothing else seemed to work. Now, it's says it's partitioning with an estimated time of 1 day! I suspect I did something wrong. Why is it partitioning? I just wanted it to erase the card! I don't really understand all the jargon in the disk utility, even though I've used it before. I chose the least secure erase setting so it might not be impossible to recover items.
Here's the screenshot of what it's up to- still. Am I formatting the wrong thing? I don't have anything else that's 32 gb that I know of, so I'm pretty sure it's the right item, but it's taking FOREVER! Can I stop it somehow, or would that wreck the card? I put the name as 32 GB Lexar, just to be clear what I was erasing, but maybe I've messed something up. HELP?

I'm not sure what you mean by a modern disk utility. It's what's on my machine. I have the latest version of the operating system that is available, as far as I know. I've tried to download Yosemite, but it wasn't available yet.
I just need to know how I can stop this process, as it is now showing it's up to 2 days and 14 hours! That's ridiculous.

  • Erasing Volumes using Disk Utility

I used Disk Utility to make copies of numerous cds and dvds. Doing this created a long list of volumes on my harddrive that I can not delete using erase or erase empty space (these fields are grayed out). I tried booting from the OSX disc however when I did that the volumes weren't even visibile. I also tried converting the disk images to a writeable format. All this did was make a copy of the existing volume. Does anyone know how to delete Volumes in another way, either using disk utiltiy or other software?
    Thanks,

Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   disk utility, delete or erase volumes

If you are getting nothing for file system what has gone wrong is something in your computer/operating system, not on the iPod.
Try running Scandisk first, then formatting or, at this is not recommended generally, if that doesn't work partition the iPod and then format it.
But you might also want to consider a reload of XP. I reiterate, if it gave you nothing to select under file system this is most likely a problem with your operating system or USB chain.
