Reformatting for Mac OS X

Hi
Purchased WD Mypassport 1 TB external hard drive formatted for Windows. How do I reformat for Mac OSx 10.8.5?

Connect the disk and have a look at the instructions in the blue panel in this link:

  • Reformat for Mac OS X 10.6.7 reinstall?

My 27" iMac (2.66 GHz Quad Core Intel i5) has been acting increasingly flaky over the course of the past two weeks. Problems have included the hard drive refusing to mount & a bout of frozen/quivering menus. Previously rare application crashes have become more frequent.
Minor measures (disk repair, trashing preference files) didn't resolve all the problems, so clearly it's time to reinstall the OS. Everything has been backed-up (twice) and I'm now considering the options before proceeding.
This iMac is mostly used for video/audio editing: many power-hungry apps (Adobe Production Premium CS5.5, CS5, CS4, FCP, Logic, etc) are installed.
The older/unneeded CS5 and CS4 applications should really be removed.  Uninstalling the older two Adobe suites alone could take hours...and  I'll probably have to reinstall CS5.5 anyway.
Would reformatting the drive and reinstalling all applications from scratch be a better choice than just reinstalling the OS? Would the benefits be worth the time and effort? On Windows machines, I've always reformatted before an OS reinstallation, but I haven't done this on a Mac in many years.
If it matters, I don't anticipate upgrading this iMac to Lion in the immediate future.
    Thanks,
    Felicia Lovelett

I just got the HP M1536dnf ethernet attached printer/scanner/fax laser printer with AirPrint support (I did have to Flash the printer's ROM to get the AirPrint support, but that was not very hard).
I can print, I can scan, I can FAX over the network.  After flashing the ROM, I can print directly from my iPod Touch.  And I can FAX directly from the printer front panel, as well as use it as a copier.
It is ONLY a Black & White (grayscale) laser printer.

  • Can a Windows Hard Drive be reformatted for MAC?

I have a windows computer that I do not use anymore, that I put a 2nd Hard Drive in it. I was wondering if it is possible to install it in my G5 and format it to use it with MAC?

If you have a PATA/Ultra ATA drive, you will need an external FireWire enclosure.
Once you have attached your drive to your G5, use Disk Utility in the Utilities folder to reformat the drive with the Mac OS X Extended filesystem.

Connect the HDD to your MBP and open Disk Utility>Erase.  Select the external HDD from the column on the left and the click on the ERASE button.  Select the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format.

  • How to Format Toshiba Hard-Drive for Mac with Parallels?

    Hello,
I recently bought a Toshiba Hard-Drive with the following features:
    500GB
It is a Canivo Basics 3.0
It is USB 3.0 and 2.0 portable hard drive
It has already been formatted NTFS for Windows XP, Vista, 7, and 8
The box says that it can be reformatted for Mac
I have a Macbook Pro with Retina Display that I bought this year in late March/early April.
It runs OS X Mavericks, and Parallels Desktop 9 for Mac.
I would like to reformat it so that I can use it on my laptop both with Windows and Mac OS at the same time. I do not wish to use a partition as I want to access the hard drive through Mac and Windows at the same time on my laptop and I also want to be able to access the Mac things on a Windows computer and vice versa.
I have never formatted a hard drive before, and I would like to use a completely safe software, or no software at all, if it is possible.
I am sorry but I don't have a very high knowledge of this.
    Thanks,
    Sandy-Wood

It would be easier, using Parallels, just to format the drive for "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". You can see it both in the Windows/Parallels and the Mac side. Leaving it formatted as NTFS is not going to allow you to access (write to) the drive unless you use third-party software. Formatting it for Mac lets you use it, as I said, on both the Parallels VM and the Mac side.
If you were using Boot Camp, I would advise leaving it formatted as NTFS and purchasing NTFS for Mac to access the drive on both OS's. You can mitigate that by formatting the drive for Mac:
    Good luck,

  • Formatting a "PC" Seagate ext HD for Mac, and formatting  iOmega ext HD.

Not sure exactly which forum this is best on, but I'm getting some other related support here so I hope it flies.
I'll soon be switching my backup drive from an iOmega ext HD to Time Capsule. So I'll need to reformat that iOmega to then use as a Network Added Storage drive. Any things I need to be sure to watch out for when I do that? Journaling, etc.?
Same question with a 1 TB Seagate ext HD I got. Says it's for PC, but I believe I can reformat for Mac? Could someone walk me through that? I can see it when connected to my laptop, and seems to work fine, so maybe I don't need to format for Mac?
    Thank you

For drives connected directly to the Time Capsule or AirPort Extreme, you will want them formatted as either HFS+ or FAT32 in order for the AirPort Utility to "recognize" them. My recommendation is to use HFS+, formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

As long as the drive is NOT formatted for NTFS, Macs can access it. Drives formatted in HFS+, and connected to the TC or Extreme, can be accessed by either OS X or Windows ... and Linux even. However, drives formatted in HFS+, connected directly to a Windows device, cannot not be accessed without additional software on the PC.

  • URGENT HELP: Need to reformat an external hard drive for Mac/Win!

We got a Desk Hammer external hard drive and my hubby chose to format it as Mac Only when it first initialized. We needed it to be formatted for Mac/Win usage. Now we cannot figure otu how to reinitialize and reformat it. It's been years since I messed with his Mac. Help--right now we just have a big old doorstop instead of a hard drive! BTW Desk Hammer is no help with support (I guess that's why they were on sale); their website isn't even complete!

Use the Disk Utility application found in /Applications/Utilities to format the Drive as MS-DOS File System. This will be readable by both Mac and Windows platforms.
    Hope this helps! bill

  • Reformat a Mac iPod for Windows

    Hi,
I have a 5th gen video iPod that I formatted for Mac, but now I want to format it for Windows instead. I have followed the articles on the site on how to restore, how to format for windows, and looked at the posts here as well, but my Windows machine will not see the iPod from iTunes or anywhere in Windows to restore it. If it won't see it, does that mean something is wrong with the USB connection or is it just because it is already formatted for Mac? How do I just the iPod clean and start over on Windows? I cannot get Windows to see the iPod with iTunes. I cannot get Windows to see the iPod in my Computer to erase the drive. Where do I go besides the standard articles on the Apple site that say to restore it (because they all assume that iTunes can see the iPod to restore it).
    Thanks,
    Brian

    Aditi,
Welcome to the discussions. I haven't done what you're asking, but here's how to reformat it: Restore the iPod on the Apple computer.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Your external disk is formatted with NTFS, a filesystem that OS X doesn't support in order to copy data to this filesystem.
If you don't want to erase your hard disk, you can use an application like Paragon NTFS that will allow you to write in your external drive without having to format your external disk.
Another option is to format your external disk. As you have movies, you should format it in exFAT. You have to format the external drive on a PC unless you haven't got a PC. If you want to do it on a Mac, use Disk Utility > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html
If you aren't going to use your external drive with PCs, you can also use "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)", designed for Mac OS X but it won't be read in any PCs

  • How can I reformat my ipod touch for mac

How can I reformat my ipod touch for mac I used to have a PC I've all ready tried to restore several times but it won't work. What can i do?

Just plug it into the mac, and do a restore. Make sure you are plugging the ipod into a usb 2.0 port and not through a keyboard or usb hub. Also if itunes offers to use a backup during the restore, don't use it.

  • I have a WD My Passport for Mac (2 TB).  It quit backing up my mac mini (8/2013) stating that it needed to be repaired.  Our IT person reformatted it.  Now time machine states that it can't back up 234 GB,  because there's not enough space.

I have erased the passport for Mac and started all over. When there is ~15 minutes left in the initial backup of the mac mini hard drive (234 GB total), it gets weird and time machine states that it it calculating the time remaining.  24 hours later, it is still backing up but shows that <200 GB of 2 TB are available and it quits backing up stating that there is not enough room.  HELP!  The WD My Passport for Mac and the Mac mini are less than a year old.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes.) You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard."
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamp of the last "Starting" message that corresponds to the beginning of an an abnormal backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showing, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.

  • How do i reformat an external hard drive for mac

i just bought a new external hard drive to back up my mac but it is not formatted for mac yet

You can do that in Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities).
With your new drive attached, choose it on the left. Choose the Partition tab. Decide if you want one or more partitions. Give each partition a name and choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format. Then click on Options and choose GUID partition scheme. Click on Apply. Your new hard drive will be erased and formatted properly - when done, it is ready for whatever you want to put on it (you do not need any software that may be on the drive currently).

  • Exporting selected contacts from Outlook 2011 for Mac

I've wanted to easily export a set of selected contacts from Outlook in Microsoft Office for Mac 2011.  I've been through many threads about synching to Address Book and then exporting, but I've found a host of troubles, including duplicate copies of contacts being created.
So, I finally broke down and wrote an AppleScript script to export all of the currently selected contacts from Outlook to a file in either vcf (vcard) or csv (comma separated value) format.  The best use of this script is to:
-- Install this as a script in Microsoft Outlook by saving the script below to Documents>Microsoft User Data>Outlook Script Menu Items
-- Change to your Contacts in Outlook.  Use the Outlook search bar to find the contacts you want to export.  You might search by name, category, company, or anything else that identifies the contacts you want to export.  Or, you might just leave the view showing all contacts.
-- Select the contacts you want to export
    -- Launch the script
The script will have you select between vcard and csv and select a destination file.  This hasn't been optimized for speed, so if you're exporting 100's or 1,000's of contacts, be patient.  And there isn't a progress bar at present, so you have to wait.  It will display an alert when it's complete.
Sorry not to have a download location for you.  You'll just have to copy the script text :-).  Keep in mind there's been some but limited testing.  Read the comments for details.  And enjoy.
