Reformatting HD after boot camp error

Okay, I was trying to install windows 7 along w/ snow leopard on my 13" macbook pro with bootcamp, when in the middle of partitioning my drive I got the error message "boot camp disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved."
so i read up on different forums, so I accepted the fact I needed to backup all of my data and restore it. So I went out and bought a HD ($50 for a 320GB - not bad) during black friday and I backed up all of my data through time machine.
So my questions is, what do I do now? do I open up the disk utility and reformat it to a single drive Mac OS Extended Journaled. Or, I heard somewhere you put in your installation CD for mac OS and press 'c' or something. so I'm quite confused on that
Lastly, I was wondering how exactly I was going to restore my data? isn't time machine designed so whenever you plug it in it starts backing up your most current settings, files, config? so do I drag and drop what is in my external HD to the mac HD or what?
any advice is appreciated

Boot from the MacOSX install DVD by holding down 'C' when booting. Use the option to restore from backup.
Use Boot Camp Assistant to remove an old Boot Camp partition. Follow up with Disk Utility's 'zero free space' option to remove the free space debris which is blocking the next use of Boot Camp Assistant's partitioner.

Boot camp error loading operating system

when i hit restart and held down option, i clicked on windows but it loaded a black screen saying error loading operating system. I am running Os X 10.9.4. Does anyone know why boot camps is not working?

Can not boot into OSX after boot camp installation and resizing of Macintosh HD

So from the beginning what I was trying to do was set up my iMac (27-inch, Late 2013) with boot camp so that I could play some old windows based games that can not be played in Parallels.
I went through the Boot camp process and everything set up just fine.
I had both OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 and Windows 8 Professional running but as I was installing games on to boot camp I discovered I did not allocate enough space and needed to extend the Boot Camp partition.
I used boot camp utility to set OS X as the default start up disk and had it restart
I launched into OS X and used Disk Utility to shrink Macintosh HD another 120GB
Restarted again holding option and launched into Windows
Used the disk management in windows to try and extend the boot camp partition into the unallocated space.
It was not an option to extend it so I tried to create a new simple volume from the unallocated space then delete it and try to extend it again.
It still was not an option.
From there I went to restart again while holding option and the only options I had were 10.10 Recovery and Windows
I tried using disk utility in recovery and Macintosh hd now only showed disk0s2
I tried to verify and it could not verify
I tried to repair and it could not repair.
I put the iMac in target disk mode and using a thunderbolt cable I tried using disk utility from my MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2012)

This is the same error I got on my iMac
I used terminal diskutil list and got:

I can see that Macintosh HD was disk2s2 but it now shows its Microsoft Basic Data.
I did not format this partition and it was working fine till I restarted the computer after resizing Macintosh HD.
I am not sure what I can do to fix this.
I've found multiple articles about similar issues, but the issue thet they have was that they could not boot to Windows instead of my issue not booting to OS X

From the Windows Partition using Disk Management I can see that the drive is still labeled Macintosh HD and that all of my data is there.
I have a complete backup so i'm not worried so much about the data.
What I'm most interested in is trying to solve this issue because I'd like to continue using boot camp and I actually work with mac computers and would like to be able to help others if this issue arrises again.

MacBook Pro 13" Late 2011 Experiencing Significant Slow Down After Boot Camp Installation

     Okay, so today, after installing Windows 7 on my MacBook Pro via Bootcamp Assistant, I experienced significant performance slow down (fans going at full blast, applications opening after extended periods of time, keystrokes not being registered) when I returned to my OS X partition/second hard drive. I have dual hard drives, one of them being a Samsung 256 GB SSD with OS X Mavericks and the other being my original 500 GB HDD, divided into a 250 GB OS X Mavericks partition and a 250 GB Windows partition. I have the SSD set as my startup disk and I have it located in the main HDD bay. I moved the old HDD into a caddy and placed it where the optical drive normally should be.
      After multiple failed attempts to install Windows via USB and Bootcamp Assistant, I decided to reinstall my optical drive and use a Windows installation disk. This attempt proved successful, and I was able to install Windows 7 onto the 250 GB partition I had created for it on the 500 GB HDD. After completing basic setup of Windows, I removed the optical disk drive and reinstalled the SSD and the HDD into their original spots (SSD in the main HDD bay, HDD in the caddy where the optical drive normally is).
     After completing this tedious process, I booted my Mac back up using the SSD. However, I noticed something was wrong when the login screen, apps, and nearly everything else on my desktop had slowed to crawl. I decided to check my Activity Monitor to see what the problem might be. Activity Monitor told me that the task "kernel_task" was taking up anywhere from 200-600% of my CPU, which explained the slowdown in performance. I looked around to see if there were others with the same problem as me, and I found that Spotlight Indexing might be an issue, with a potential remedy being move my Bootcamp Partition into the Privacy section of Spotlight under System Preferences. After doing that, I experienced no increase in performance and everything was still going very slowly.
     The next step I took was to see if booting into Safe Mode would help the issue. After booting into Safe Mode on my SSD, I noticed that things were back to their normal speeds, with applications opening at the speed they should be and keystrokes being registered instantaneously. However, the fans were still going and had not shut off once booting into Safe Mode. In addition, I checked Activity Monitor and the "kernel_task" in question was no longer taking up massive amounts of the CPU.
     At this point, I don't know what to do and I need help in restoring my Mac to original speeds. I may end up deleting my Boot Camp partition as a last measure if all else fails, seeing as I installed Windows in the first place for running a few programs and games that I can live without. However, I'd prefer to not have things come to that and fix things before deleting the Boot Camp Partition. I've heard that if everything runs normally in Safe Mode, then the issue is third-party software. Is this true?
     Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am writing this from the MacBook in question in Safe Mode because it's essentially useless in normal SSD operation.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:

4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Windows 7 - Blue screen of death after Boot Camp install

Hello! I have done some searches with no answers, so...
After installing Windows 7 from scratch I then install Boot Camp 3.0 which then leads to the Windows blue screen of death upon reboot. I then have to recover Windows to the previous state prior to installing Boot Camp.
Help!?

Most likely, Apple HFS read-only, which is AppleHFS.sys and AppleMNT.sys - rename those and see.
You might want to run chkdsk after all this to make sure there are no errors with the drive and file system.
Windows Explorer will not accept HFS+ filenames with special characters and will "green bar" and hang when it does, too.
The faulty HFS driver is a valid concern.
Rename AppleHFS.sys and AppleMNT.sys
By doing the following you will disable HFS mount / read mode on windows XP, Vista, 7.
Navigate to c:/windows/system32/drivers/AppleMNT.sys, rename the AppleMNT.sys file to something like AppleMNT_keep.sys or something of your likings.
The faulty HFS driver is a valid concern. It seems to happen on many systems.
You find it in Windows/system32/drivers/AppleHFS.sys
Renaming to AppleHFS_disabled.sys will avoid the blue screens until you have found another solution or Apple updates Bootcamp 3
After renaming both myself because they are no longer "*.sys" or something? they are gone. In my case AppleHFS prevented Windows Backup from running to end and was causing error "some files skipped" and while some might find reading convenient, I prefer Windows not have even read-only access.
You can probably do better with MacDrive, or probably Paragon's HFS driver, to read AND write if needed, to HFS from Windows.

Mystery partition after boot camp fail

I'm on an iMac, OSX 10.10.1. The entire 3TB Fusion HD was a single partition.
I attempted to install Windows using the Boot Camp Assistant, but Boot Camp froze while partitioning the HD. After rebooting, my HD now has a second Macintosh HD partition (~800GB) with a bunch of files in it (which I can't access), and which I'm unable to modify or remove using the Disk Utility (both in OSX and Recovery).
And of course, my HD now shows only 2.3TB.
Is there any way to resolve this short of reformatting the HD? And if that's necessary, any tips on how to go about doing that, plus reinstalling the OS and my Time Machine backup (I'm new to Macs, so I'm a little unfamiliar).

When I get to this step -- "Select the top level hard drive, not one of the partitions (as shown in screen shot)" -- the only option I have is to select the partition, not the entire HD. Note in the screenshot, the capacity is 2.3TB, which is only one partition of the two.
If I try to select the entire HD, I don't have the option to erase.
(These screenshots are from Disk Utility in OSX, not the Recovery one, but that's just so I could get a screenshot of what I saw in Recovery).
If I click to Erase, it notes that I'm only erasing the one partition. If this will, in fact, reset the drive to a single partition, I'll go ahead and do it, but I'm hesitant to reformat and reinstall if I don't have to.
It appears this might be a result of the way the Fusion drive operates combined with Bootcamp. Looking at this thread, there's a possible solution, but before I take that step, another new-Mac-user question -- is the reinstallation of the OS pretty reliable? Meaning if I go crazy with formatting things, am I always going to be able to reinstall the OS as long as I have a Recovery partition or have an Internet connection to do the Internet Recovery?

Problems with starting Windows after Boot Camp was installed on a Win-PC

i have a very interesting problem for the MacComunity (haha -.-). The problem is: after I have installed Boot Camp from my Snow Leopard DVD on my Windows PC (not my iMac); I can not start the system. In the Boot Camp System where i can set the system to start with, there was only the Boot Camp System available (not Vista). However, the system installs some Vista-Updates and some Updates from Apple Software Update (iTunes 9.2, Quicktime 7, Safari 5, Airport 5, Boot Camp 3.1) on my PC.
Everything was all right but after I have restarted the System nothing happend. the System freezed when the boot-Screen (Intel Logo) appears. The Systemkeyboard was not detected. It only detects a n external apple Keyboard. There are some reactions when I press the keys, but the Monitory is frozen, anyway. What can I do?

Sounds like a lesson in there: don't wait to put OS X on an external drive that is usually off line.
Rush to a store or on-line and get a UPS of the 1500VA sort (APC RS would be nice, or SMART UPS 1000VA).
The directory of the drives could be corrupt.
I have all my equipment, modem, routers, the works, but we had a bad storm and one port on the router/modem is out (the one I used, the modem seems to be okay) and I am worried that the UPS's line filter for DSL in is also 'compromised.'
Storms and power outages can wRECK or cuase havoc.
It sounds like you need to map out bad sectors maybe (zero all in Disk Utility) perhaps. The directory, volume blocks, or even journal file, got scrambled. However, because no test can find it means - to me - it could be the "non user partitions" rather than OS X partition etc. Hence, zero the drive or just reformat it in full.
Why have you not ever with these outages, just continued to live w/o one? I wouldn't just shutdown, I would unplug if a storm approaches.
PS: SMC Reset button is under drive bay #4. Give it a 5-10 seconds depress.

Windows 7 Black screen with cursor after boot camp partition

So I realise this is a problem that was plaguing people a few years back. So I'll go from the very start.
I've downloaded a copy of windows 7 professional 64bit from the Microsoft website. My optical/CD drive isn't working, so I've been unable to use it
to install windows. I decided I'd try booting from my USB. So I have the ISO file and formatted my USB and I've downloaded the latest drivers for boot camp assistant on my mac (version 5.0.4) I'm up to date with every update for my mac. Now, I do realise that Apple doesn't recommend using a USB to load windows, but I watched this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8z1gqw0ougo and it explained how to get the checkbox up when you're in boot camp so you can run from your USB.
My problem now, is that straight after I have partitioned my hard drive, it goes on to install windows but upon restarting it reaches "the black screen of death" with just the white cursor blinking. I've tried multiple times and keep getting the same result. I've even tried what Apple suggested and only have one USB device plugged in http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4536

I have solved this issue now but seem to have encountered another one. I solved the above issue simply by keep on trying time and time again, partitioning the hard drive and trying to install windows 7.
Anyway, I have encountered this error: windows setup could not apply the configuration set. The WINDOWS folder cannot be found.

Boot Camp Error "You cannot partition an external disk drive"

Hi all - I am trying to install Windows XP Pro via Boot Camp for the first time. I have all four bays of my MacPro (circa 2007) filled with hard drives. I boot off the first bay, and have a cal digit raid card that controls the other three hard drives into a RAID5 array. I believe that the raid card may be the culprit.
I am trying to install boot camp/WinXP on the first drive. I get the error in the title above when I try to run Boot Camp. I have ejected the RAID5, and I have rebooted to no avail.
I cannot wipe my first drive/boot drive clean. I just wish to partition it via BC so I can switch between XP and Mac OSX. Any guidance is appreciated.

Try removing the other drives is almost always essential with a Mac Pro to get Windows to work. Even Windows 7 doesn't understand seeing Apple GPT/EFI during install - they can be reinstalled later.
Or it could be that any hardware RAID controller also has to be removed. Like Apple's Pro RAID or ATTO FC.
Even w/o the CalDigit and just Apple GPT you would have gotten an error message.
BCA is still after all these years unable to understand and work with a Mac Pro properly. A one-trick/ one-drive only utility that is stumped when it runs into a dual drive setup. Which way why I gave up on using Mac Pro for dual-boot and built some PCs just for Windows 7. I install Windows on PC, then transfer the drive to Mac Pro and it works just fine!

External HD "Not Readable" after Boot Camp Installation

After installing Windows XP on my Mac, I switched back over to OS X and tried to access my external hard drive which greeted me with the message: "The disk you inserted is not readable by this computer." I assume that the Boot Camp process must've affected the external drive and made it incompatible with OS X. The external does show up in Disk Utility, but there are no options to repair the disk, only erase. Can anyone tell me how to reformat the drive, without losing all of the precious data on the disk, for OS X?

XP can't see Mac OS file system.
There is your drive, and your volume_name on the left side column. You have to click on volume_name and select the tab for Repair.
Best to backup before installing or updating any OS, and leave everything you don't need disconnected.
I doubt anything changed, should not have.

Boot camp error "Your disk could not be partitioned" Yosemite iMac

I been trying to boot camp windows 7 on my iMac for 2 days now. I tried several online suggestions but with no success. Everything will work fine until I get to Macintosh HD will be partitioned as, I pick the size and click install. BCA will start partitioning but then will stop and I get a message "Your disk could not be partitioned. An error occurred while partitioning the disk"
Would someone help me please

The only supported method is to backup OSX, erase internal disk, restore from TM backup, and try BCA again.
Before you do this, one suggestion is to run Disk Utility Verify/Repair (twice) and a SMC Reset - Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support after each Repair.
Safe Mode can also help - OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? - Apple Support.

IMac Disc Utility and Boot Camp Error

So my friend just got a new 24" Intel iMac a few weeks ago and it had a bad super drive and memory, so he had to get it replaced. Bad start for a pc switcher. =P But the new one worked out ok. After a few days of going fine he randomly had a Gray screen pop up and he explained to me he fixed the problem by reinstalling macosx but keeping all his info (I did not see him do this) Since then, it's been going perfect he says without any hiccups. Jump forward 2 weeks later, today, I went over to his house to help set up boot camp for him. I started the assistant and attempting to split the HD to give Windows 50gb. It gave me an error saying there is something wrong with the startup disk check out disk utility to fix it. So naturally, I opened Disk Utility and ran a scan and it came up with this EXACT error-

So I already had some reading done about how to repair this kind of thing previously so I placed the install DVD in and reboot holding "C". I then ran disk utility from there checking the HD once again and it came up the same exact error so I told it to repair and it gave me a message saying it repaired whatever issues it had. Assuming everything was okay I reboot and tried boot camp once again. Which it then gave the same error as before that stopped the HD from successfully splitting. So I reran the disk utility and it gave me the exact error I posted above, nothing changed. But the catch is, nothing else seems wrong. Programs run fine and things seem to be going smoothly in his every day use of the computer. Only thing he noticed a few times was when on boot up it just stays at the white screen instead of loading the startup disk (which is easily solved by just holding option) But he made it sound like this only happened a couple times. I noticed a few "fake error messages" that Apple mentions in their support files but I am not familiar enough to know what is what and if it's a fake message why doesn't boot camp work? Does anyone have any ideas?

If running Disk Utility from the install disk gave you & your friend the same error & could not fix it, then your friend will need either DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro to solve it.

Boot camp error 2753

I had been using Boot Camp successfully through v1.3. Tried to update drivers to 1.4, but the installation cancelled itself, saying that there probably was a package issue (error 2753). I have tried re-downloading Boot Camp 1.4 -- same thing happens. I have tried installing via burned CD, and installing via saving the drivers to a folder -- either way, I get the same error. Tried to search for this error, with no luck.
I am running 10.4.10 on a MacBook Pro. I also sometimes run the boot camp OS (XP) with Fusion. (But I booted via Boot Camp when I attempted the update.)
Anyone have a suggestion?

Critical to the Vista - 7 upgrade was disabling startups and services that were not Microsoft.
The Win 7 was booting for teh first time and choking on one of these services.
After 7 succeeded, I did a complete backup, updated windows completely and started adding back the services. Nothing vital seemed to kill it. The updates may have been important but you can't get to them if the initial upgrade fails because of teh service-related crashes.
After that, I fixed audio with the Realtek drivers.
The Magic Mouse still isn't working, but maybe I can write back with that since the web lit is dicey.

Strange Boot Camp Error

I successfully installed Windows XP onto my Macbook and am able to swap between both Mac OS X and Windows just fine. However, when I want to open up Boot Camp assistant, or restart to the windows partition of the mac, I get an error message that states:
Boot Camp Assistant cannot be used.
You must update your computer's Boot ROM firmware before using this setup assistant.
I have been able to install before the 10.5.2 patch with nary a problem but after I upgraded from 10.5.1 and redid the boot camp I get this error. Any help would be appreciated!
