Reformatting Macbook Pro

Hi there, am a newbie here,
I searched the other threads here but didn't come across an answer that deals with my specific problem...I recently bought a new MacBookPro and used migration assistant to retrieve files etc from my old MacBook. This went fine but a prompt appeared informing me that the old one had the same name as my new one. Instead of just replacing my new one with the old profile I renamed it. This means that I have a bunch of separate folders for iPhoto and iTunes that i have to enter a password for to import them. It is just a mess and I would be happier to wipe it and start over. Looking at some forums it appears problems can start from here. If it is going to create problems would I just be better off cleaning up the hard drive as best I can? Or is there an easy way to reboot everything and start afresh?

Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
After the hard drive has been reformatted quit DU and return to the installer. Complete your OS X installation. Once finished when you go through the Setup Assistant do not create a new account using the same username as the account you want to migrate. You may opt to use Migration Assistant then to migrate your Home folder from your other computer without running into any problem. Once finished log into your old account and delete the account you created during setup. All should be fine.

Hacing problems reformatting MacBook pro. Tried startup with option key but recovery disk option missing. Then tried the Mac os x disc that came with the MacBook Pro however when I get to the selection of where I want to install no HD option appears. Start up disk also appears to be missing. Can only start Mac in safe mode.

Remind them at this time you don't desire a service account, just desire a disc. The only reason you would want an account is if you wanted them to help you with actual troubleshooting.

Data Recovery from A reformatted MacBook Pro!

Hi,
I made a big mistake, by not taking back up for a few files (unfortunately they were extremely critical for me) from my MacBook Pro hard drive before I gave the laptop to Apple service centre, where they had to reformat my Mac.
Is there any way I could get back/recover those files? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks a ton in advance!

Hi - I'm selling my 2008 Macbook Pro and am worried that unless I reformat the hard drive I'll leave on personal information.
I have the super drive but no longer have the original install disc.
Is there any way I can wipe the drive and reinstall the original system without the disc?
I do have a separate Macbook and have the original install disc for that one, can that be used?
I've seen some posts suggesting that the disc utility of another mac could be used to reformat if the computers are linked by a firewire cable - but I guess I would still need some kind of intall disc?
Any help greatly appreciated.

No, unless you have a duplicate model machine and use it's disk.

It's because your on OS X Lion 10.7 and the disks are for 10.6 or earlier.
10.7 and up have a RecoveryHD partition on the boot drive. Hold the Command R keys down and boot the machine into it and Disk Utility and Install OS X is there.
If you install OS X without using Disk Utility to erase all your data first, it just replaces OS X with a new copy.
Only by erasing all your data first, then installing OS X, will cure your slow down problems however it deletes all your users, files and programs in the process.
If you don't want to lose your files, you need to make a copy of them to a external drive before you erase the internal drive.

Reformatting MacBook Pro (early 2011)

Hi guys, I need help by reformatting my MacBook Pro (early 2011)
I want to reformat it, because the last months it became really slow. I've installed and maybe not correctly uninstalled lots of applications and stuff like this... I just wannt to clean it out, delete all whats on it.
When i bought my MBP it came with OS X Snow Leopard and iLife 11... but NO discs. Afterwards i purchased OS X Lion in the App Store (NO disc). I've checked now on my App Store, and under purchased Apps nothing appears.
After refomratting it, if i am not wrong, OS X SL will be installed, and iLife will be deleted.
But I want the clean MBP with my OS X Lion and my iLife 11 on it. How do i do this? None of them are shown in my App Store under "purchased".

That is Completely incorrect. Every Mac computer that came with Snow Leopard or any other earlier version of OS X came with 2 system discs. One is the OS and the other is the iLife Appications disc. If you bought your Mac New then They Were In The Box the computer came in.
If you don't have them, like you didn't know they were in the box and you threw that box out, you can order a replacement set from Apple.
But if you had Lion installed then on the internal drive is the Recovery HD partition. At starup hold down the Command+r keys and that will boot you to the Recovery HD partition and from there you can Erase the Macintosh HD partition and Re-Install Lion. you will need the Apple ID and password that was used to buy Lion originally. It will ask for both of those to start the download of Lion.

hi i want to reformat my macbook pro mid 2012 because i think theres a keylogger in it. my moms email has been hacked recently and i feel that a part of it is because of the teamviewer app (remote dekstop app). i have deleted the app but the perpetrator may have embeded a keylogger in my moms laptop.
the thing is, macbook pros mid 2012 when we bought, the os was already built it. so how do we reformat? help pls!

Reformatting Macbook Pro Hard Drive

OK ... Here's my issue. Our 2011 Macbook Pro is one of the ones associated with the recall and fix that Apple is finally doing.

When it became completely unusable last year we had to retrieve our data from the laptop so we removed the hard drive. Now that Apple is going to fix the issue, we need to re-install the hard drive. The only issue is that we have sensitive info on the drive we'd like to erase. I could do the factory reset if the laptop worked correctly. But due to the issue Apple is fixing, we will never be able to do a factory reset on the hard drive because we won't be able to see what we are doing. I have the drive in an enclosure at the moment and I'm trying desperately to find a way to reset it, but have had no luck. I cannot delete things off the drive using HFSExplorer either. Can anyone provide suggestions on how we can wipe the drive so that it can still be used on the Macbook Pro before we submit it to be repaired? ... or ... Is there another program out there that would allow me to access the mac drive via windows to delete individual items from the drive?
Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

In order to use the new HDD, it will have to be formatted, but that will require a working MBP. Maybe the technician will do that and install an OSX when the logic board gets replaced. When you deliver the MBP for repairs, mention the situation to the genius bar technician during that visit.

They are specific to the hardware, so no. You can always try but i think it will not work.

Cannot reformat macbook pro 2011

I am using a MBP 2011. I have BOOTCAMP, windows 7 installed, which means to say that my harddisk is partitioned.
This is how i got my harddisk to be locked:
-Holding Cmd+R
-Erase Mac OS
-Reformat
Now, i can't reinstall mac OSX Lion because my harddisk is locked. I cannot partition my harddisk because my disk cannot be unmounted. IT'S STUCK. REFORMATTING A MAC IS REALLY A PITA. I've scoured through the forums and websites for hours and THERE IS NO SOLUTION TO THIS. wow. seriously. This is my last experience with apple.

I recently formatted my MB Pro and noticed I no longer have iPhoto despite it being installed on the laptop when I purchased it.
How do I get iPhoto back? Is it on the second CD (applications disc)? If so, what other apps or on the disc?

That's what I thought but Photobooth, Front Row etc were on the laptop after formatting and reinstallation of the OS.
Those are core OS components.
Can anyone tell me exactly what apps are on the app CD?
iLife, and maybe the iWork trial. If you customized your Mac with additional software, that may be found on it as well.

Never mind...I answered my own question For those of you who have to deal with this, go into iTunes, under iPhone, and then choose what you want to sync. You can completely replace the info on your phone or add the iPhone data to your calendar.
Now...how do I back up the info on my computer? Anyone?

Reformatted MacBook Pro (always do on a new computer, to save disk space, by not installing all the languages, printers etc).
Except FrontRow did not install? Where do I find it to install in from the 2 installer disks.

On the Installer Disc 1 double-click on the Install Bundled Software Only icon. After you select the destination disk click on the Customize button, then select the optional software to re-install. FrontRow is included in the bundle.
