Reformatting mom's laptop

Hi, my mom has an old Toshiba Satellite that is so filled with the family's stuff that we decided to format and reinstall or reset it back to factory standard was there a factory standard for the Toshiba to reset back to or should we start looking for a Windows XP disk and drivers for the Toshiba?

Provide some more information to get better advice.
What model Satellite?
What version of Windows?
Other than the fact that there is a lot of 'stuff' on it, is it running OK?
First rule of computers: If it's not broken, don't fix it.  You may be much better off just deleting the 'stuff' than trying what you propose.

  • I deleted my account on my mom's laptop and now I can't access my iPhone's music anymore

I kept all the files in my mom's account and it is in a folder under my name. I even have my music in iTunes in there but it is listed in between codes in a notepad both under the names of iTunes Music Library and Library.
Is there a way for me to somehow convert this code into the actual itunes so that I could put the music into my iPhone again? I'm pretty sure when I had to delete my account, i was still able to readd music without it all being deleted.

  • Help PLEASE-mom dropped laptop!

My mother dropped her laptop and damaged the screen, and it has a small crack in it. My brother-in-law who "does computers", told her it may be possible to buy a new screen and replace it. He also said it would be possible to hook up an external monitor thru a USB port. Is either or both possible?

  • When I had my ipod I used my dad's computer. I then lost my ipod and moved. I have my moms old laptop.I logged into my account and synced this computer but there is no music in the library. How do I get all my music back I bought on itunes.

I need help. I would like to get all my music back. Thank you

For what silly reason would someone expect media to magically appear simply because they signed into iTunes?
Media is only where the user puts it.
Either copy the media from the old computer (or it's backup) to the new computer or download past purchases from iTunes.

  • Can I Reformat windows 10 after upgrading my laptop to windows 10?

My Laptop model  is lenovo G40-70 with a preinstalled OS of windows 8.1. My Laptop comes with a factory reset option. How do I do that in Windows 10 or do I need to clean install? And Where can I download the Windows 10 iso? Lastly  How can It determine if my Windows 10 is genuine after clean installing? I havent yet upgraded to Windows 10 because I'm afraid I might not be able to reformat/reset my laptop to factory settings.

    Hello,
I would suggest making a backup of the G40-70, and testing that backup to verify it works.  If there is an option to create factory recovery media for the Windows 8.1 installation the laptop came with, you can try that as well.  Once you have verified you can backup and restore Windows 8.1 on the laptop, go ahead with the Windows 10 upgrade process.
After you have successfully upgraded the existing installation of Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 on the G40-70, you will be able to download the Windows 10 ISO from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 and perform a clean install of it.

  • Can more than one laptop use a wireless network at a time?

Hi...quick question and this may be a stupid one .. but a few months ago my uncle was living with us and had a laptop which had a wireless Internet connection. I had already had my Ibook set up and was using a wireless Internet connection. When he turned on his mine stopped working? Why was that happening? Also ... my dad is buying my mom a laptop for Xmas and I'm sure that it will have a wireless connection as well? I'm hoping that same thing will not happen again. Why would the wireless router only read one laptop in the same house? Aren't wireless routers suppose to read more than one computer? I just don't want my MAC to be unable to use the Internet once another laptop is in our house. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks a ton!

    IBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Karen, welcome to the discussions.
Using a wireless router will enable you to connect upwards of 50 computers all at the same time and simultaniously.
Take care to read the set up procedure for the particular Wireless Router you are using for your Network.
There are several different ways to confiqure a wireless Network.
AS long as all of the computers you have, do in fact have wireless cards in them you shouldn't have a problem.
There is a difference in the set up for PC and a Mac.
There is also a difference in Wireless Routers and there capabilitys, some are for older wireless 802.11b compliant systems. Whereas the newer Routers or Base stations are for both older 802.11b and the newer 802.11g connections.
They will say 802.11b/g or something close.
Most will require you connect your Internet Service Providers Modem to the WAN Port of your choice of Wireless Router. Like I said follow the directions.
    Good Luck

  • Can I safely reformat just one of my partitions on my external hard drive?

I am 99% sure of the answer, but I'm just looking for a bit of confirmation before I pull the trigger...
I have an external Western Digital hard drive that I have partitioned into two parts. "WD" is used to store all my music, projects, movies, etc., this making it ESSENTIAL that it DOES NOT get erased! The other partition, "TM" is for Time Machine backups.
I just reformatted my computer last night and I went into the "TM" partition and deleted everything. I didn't need those backups now what I'm starting fresh again. But when I go to configure Time Machine after my fresh reformat of my laptop and I choose the "TM" partition, Time Machine says, "In order to start backing up with Time Machine the disk “Time Machine” must first be erased. Erasing will destroy all information on the disk and can not be undone.".
Is that safe?! WIll it just reformat the "TM" partition and leave "WD" alone or will it erase the entire hard drive (aka. both partitions)?! Please let me know. Thanks!

The erase option in Disk Utility (and supposedly TM, which I don't use) can be used on individual volumes (partitions) of a disk.

  • Ichat video not working after reformat

Thanks for coming here to help me on my problem guys. I am a PC user and my friend is an apple macbook owner. We always videochat with eachother over AIM. Tonight We were video chatting fine and my friend wanted to reformat his macbook. After he did that, he came back online onto ichat and now when he does a videochat request, it seems to load fine but his video is a black box and I cant hear him. He can however hear my mic. On his end he can see his own video fine and everything looks ok in the setup settings as well.
What setting is it that is causing this problem for us? I know his router settings are fine because its always worked. All he did was a reformat of his laptop that caused this situation, Im not an avid mac user though so Im not quite sure how to solve this one. I would imagine its not the port settings in the actual router though because like i said, it was working fine right before the reformat.
Thanks for the help guys. Hes done a system update so far and is 100% updated if that helps.

    Hi,

Not sure why this got Bumped so quickly. It has not been more than 15 hours since you first posted. I post for about 3 hours each of my evenings 7.00pm to 10.00 Pm my local time. The first post was recorded at 05.46 (The discussion Software displays Local time to each logged in reader.)
Why on earth did he want to reformat ?

iChat to AIM on a PC can be notoriously difficult to get sorted.
Often it either works or it does not despite any tweaking of settings.
If he wiped his drive and reinstalled the OS we cannot rule out the router but I will come back to that.
    Tweaks/Settings.
A MacBook tells me he is most likely on Leopard (10.5.x) or Snow Leopard (10.6.x)
    A) Firewall.
He should go to System Preferences > Security > Firewall
    i) Leopard - He should use Allow All or Allow Specific apps and Add iChat to the List
ii) Snow Leopard - He should go to the Advanced Button in the same place as listed above and Allow Signed Apps and add iChat to the List.
iii) In either, Stealth should not be ON in the Advanced Button.
    B) Internet speed
    i) In Leopard go to System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming and set the speed to 1.5Mbps T1/Intranet/LAN
    Restart iChat if Open.
ii) The above setting does not exist in Snow Leopard.
iii) In either go to iChat menu > Preferences > Video Section and set the Bandwidth Limit to 500kbps as starting, test, point.
    C) Router.
If he used Port Forwarding to Open the ports his device may well have wanted him to Point the ports to a Specific IP (Computer)
His computer may no longer have that IP as Reformatting makes it look like a new device.
If his device has it it would be better to use UPnP.
The fact his Preview does not resolve in to the Pic-in-Pic part and show you, plus the fact you see Black instead of video with associated Audio issues suggests a Speed issue (the Quicktime Setting in Leopard if set to Automatic is actually only 384kbps).
    D) Updates.
IF he did an Archive and Install the process reinstalls the OS but leaves all the apps and personal stuff untouched (Settings are a choice along the way)
This means his iChat may not match his OS as it gets Updated in some of the OS Updates.
He should Update to either 10.5.8 Here --->> http://support.apple.com/kb/DL866
    Or the 10..6.4 ---->>> Here http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1048

  • HP DV6700 Laptop Problem

    Hi,
I was reformatting my HP laptop (Vista OS) and I didn't realize I was using the restore cds from my wife's older HP latop which has the XP OS back from 2005. I tried pressing the F11 key and no luck with recovery. I noticed that my wireless internet is not working either.
Is there anything I can do to get the Vista OS back? I put all my pics and files onto flash drives before I started the reformatting. I am thinking I am going to have to buy the HP Vista Restore CDs from HP. Any ideas or suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Randy

Did you make the restore CD set for your computer when you first got it?  You should have done so when it prompted you to do it.  You'll have to find those discs and use them.  Alternatively, you can go to the HP website, search for the drivers page for your make and model, and see if HP still sells the restore CD set for your *exact* model. If they do, there will be a link there to order them.

  • After reformat HWsetup remembers old settings?

I just reformatted my Toshiba laptop to out of box state. When I open the lid, the laptop boots up which is not the default setting in HWsetup. Why after a reformat would HWsetup not be restored to it's default settings. Why would "Panel Open - Power On" be set to "Enabled" when the default is "Disabled". Any thoughts?
Odd thing is the first few times I opened the lid after the reformat I don't recall it booting up. Then suddenly it did.

HWSetup doesn't store any settings itself. It just accesses the BIOS. Reformatting the hard drive doesn't do anything to the BIOS.

  • Problems abound... help!

My iPod (w/Click Wheel, 30GB, from 2004)is starting to act up for the first time. It started last Wednesday. I was listening to some songs and halfway through one, it skipped to the next song. I thought perhaps the song was corrupted since it was my first time listening to it so I just ignored the problem. The next day though I was listening to an album I had already played and knew there wasn't any problems with it except this time, for a few songs, it skipped. That day, before I started my computer, I connected my iPod to my computer and when I tried starting my PC, it didn't. It just remained a black screen. But as soon as I unplugged my iPod, my computer started up. When my computer was finished starting up, I plugged my iPod in and clicked on iTunes but it didn't work. Once again, as soon as I unplugged my iPod, it worked. I plugged my iPod back in and tried opening iPod updater but I got the same results. I've also tried opening 'My Computer' but each time, it freezes up until I disconnect my iPod.
Throughout this, I reset my iPod yet it still didn't work. I've restarted my computer and I've re-installed the iPod software. Nothing. I would try to restore my iPod but I can't access the updater while my iPod is connected. I've also tried my mother's iPod cable on my computer, and that didn't work. I tried my mother's iPod on my computer and it worked fine. I plugged my iPod into my mom's laptop though and my iPod froze everything until I unplugged it.
And now today, I tried listening to my music on my iPod but it doesn't even turn on. It just shows the Apple logo and then a blank screen for a few seconds than a folder appears with an exclamation point and says www.apple.com/support/ipod underneath. Then goes back to a blank screen and repeats the process over and over. I tried resetting but it won't work. I used the AC adapter and that didn't work either. Tried my computer and it still doesn't work.
Is there anything I can do? I'm really frustrated and just want my iPod to work again. Please help!
    ~Lindsay
      Windows XP

    Hello,
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=501330&tstart=0
    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iPod updater.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning !!!! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)
    http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html
2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

  • Officejet J6480: Drivers Installed, Printer Offline

I have been having this problem for ages with my OfficeJet J6480 since the newest update of Solution Center 13.0, which has since caused a lot of grief for both network printing and Scan To issues on my mothers Aspire 6530 which has Vista 32 Bit on it. My machine which is a custom built Asus P5N-D with Windows XP 32 Bit on it works flawlessly with the printer wirelessly and has no problems with Scan To features.
I have reinstalled and scrubbed the drivers so many times, plus a reformat. When the installation occurs the printer works perfectly, then later the printer cannot come online wirelessly with my mom's Vista machine.
The only issue I can find is that in the Vista Control Panel under Printers is that the J6480 is seen as Offline, and to get the printer Online, I would have to right click on the printer and select "Use Printer Online." This fixes the issue until the computer gets shutdown. I don't know what to do and it is really bothering my mom.
Here are the Network Diagnostics for both computers:

I have a couple of general recommendations:
    1) From the D-Link DIR-655 WIRELESS SETTINGS -> Manual Wireless Network Setup:
    (a) set the 802.11 Mode to Mixed 802.11n, 802.11g and 802.11b for best compatibility.  If you are positive that there are no 802.11b devices in the area, you can use Mixed 802.11n and 802.11g.
    (b) Disable Auto Channel Scan and select channel 1, 6 or 11.  To find the best channel, download our Network Diagnostic Utility (located here) onto a laptop wirelessly connected to your DIR-655,  run it and select Show Advanced Tools and then select Display Detected Wireless Networks.  Try to pick a channel that is at least 5 channels away from your strongest neighbor.
    (c) Set the Channel Width to 20 MHz and Visibility Status to Visible.  This gives you best compatibility.  While the 20 MHz setting does slow down your network somewhat, unless you don't have neighboring wireless networks, interference from those networks effectively prevents the use of two bonded channels (to get 40 MHz) in the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi band.
    2) From the PC, uninstall the HP Customer Participation Program (if it was installed).
