Reformatting my computer and itunes on manual mode

I need to reformat my computer and I want to save my files onto my ipod. i currently have it set on manual mode because I don't store my music on my computer, only on my ipod.
If I reformat my computer and reinstall everything, will Itunes be set back to automatic mode, so that when I plug in my ipod it will erase everything?
Or am i safe to uninstall everything/reformat, and then reinstall itunes and plug in my ipod and have everything still on my ipod?
thanks.

The setting is iPod-based, so as long as you read every dialog box when you reinstall, you should be OK.
May I suggest backing the music up to somehwere other than the iPod? Safety, is all.

  • White screen and computer and iTunes will not recognize

I was attempting to install the update, when my computer and iTunes stopped recognizing the iPhone. Now it is stuck on a white screen, and I can't do anything. Help, please!

    Hi,
Try restarting the iPhone by holding the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears> then slide to turn off> and turn the iPhone back on by pressing the Sleep/Wake again, as described on page 46 of the iPhone User Guide.
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/iPhoneUserGuide.pdf
If you cannot restart the iPhone, try resetting it by holding the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons until you see the Apple logo as described here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305743
If the issue persists, try putting the iPhone into recovery mode as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808

  • I reformatted my computer and now I'm trying to re-sync my iPhone.

I just reformatted my computer and now I'm trying to re-sync my iPhone to my new iTunes library. When i try sync it, it tries to sync my new library on top of my old iPhone library instead of replacing it. So it's trying to add another 20GB on top of my old 25GB library. Why isn't it just erasing all the stuff i don't have anymore like it usually does?

the issue that i think you are encountering is the "device was synced once before" to an account. now your resyncing the device under technically a different account (granted it was a upgrade or clean install to win7 most likely win said do a clean install) things changed and account relationships (pointers changed) causing duplication.
you could manually delete the duplicates in one of two ways.
directly on the iphone or with the settings I had mentioned (go to itunes - file - display duplicates)
but I would most likely try and take them off the iphone instead.
here is a thought, let us assume that you have itunes open....and your in your music library.
from the space and duplication issue
can you create a new folder on your desktop.... then drag x number of songs to the folder (technically creating a back up copy)..... then litterally go back to itunes and physically delete the copy (moving it to trash - two step process - delete from playlist - delete from library) freeing up "space as it were"  to get you past the   space issue your encountering when you attemp to sync.
techmically this would give you a back up of songs, but reduce the number of songs being syncd
then you could, connect the device with the reduction of songs accross the boad (itunes)
it would possibly get you to the point where you could do a sync and not run into any issues (thats a goal here)
if you got to that point
you could then disconnect the phone, you would readd the folder that you created on your desktop to itunes
you could the eliminate the duplicates (from the library and ideally have one set of songs) to sync with checkmarks to your phone when you reconnected.
And you are correct. step 2 would cause songs to be lost
you would loose the 500 off of the phone, thats why option two was a concern (loosing the 500 songs)

  • Rebooted computer and i cant manually manage music!

ok, so i needed to reboot my computer the other day and didnt do a back up because i though that the virus would just end up back on my computer..lol so anyway! i re-downloaded itunes and authorised my computer and it says "computer 1 of 5 has been authorised" but all my music has been erased from my computer! now, i am aware that music from an iphone can not be "downloaded" onto a new computer, however it is the same one! i dont even want to download it back onto the computer! i just want to be able to click the little "manually manage music" box without it saying "all music must be erased" please help me...
    thank you for your time

    Sorry. Cannot be done.
When you reformatted your computer, your itunes library became a new library. You cannot sync or manually manage music without losing it.
You should ALWAYS, aways have a backup copy. Always.
You can transfer itunes purchases. Without syncing: File>Transfer pUrchases

  • Computer AND iTunes don't recognize my iPod touch.  Comp thinks it is a camera.  iTunes won't bring up devices at all.  I've already uninstalled iTunes and QT and reinstalled after problem that happened when I updated iTunes... getting beyond P/Oed!!!

Computer AND iTunes don't recognize my iPod touch.  Comp thinks it is a camera or something.  iTunes won't bring up devices at all.  I've already uninstalled iTunes and QT and reinstalled after problem that happened when I updated iTunes - updated iTunes completely demolished my computer's ability to recognize the sound card and computer had NO sound at all.  I had to uninstall iTunes, QT, AND my sound card and reinstall them all.  Sound worked fine, but now I can't sync my iPod.  Computer recognizes that "something" is hooked up (thinks it might possibly be a camera) and I get that "open with" window.  In "my computer" it shows that there is an "iPod" connected, but it is pictured as a camera.  In iTunes my username is no longer appearing (although account info is there) and NO devices whatsoever get listed.  There is nothing wrong with my USB ports or cable.  And of course Apple won't help anyone unless you pay them to. ... I am getting beyond P/Oed!!!  You pay hundreds for a product and all you get are headaches with their stupid bug infested software and no support at all.
Can anyone out there help me clean up this unbelievable mess Apple and iTunes has created in my computer?
    Thank you.
    Evie

After three completely wasted days trying to figure all of this out I finally got it fixed - on my own - by reading dozens and dozens of rogue posts in indie forums from people that refuse to dish out money to have a company TRY and advise possible fixes on their own glitches.
(here's a novel idea - fix the glitches Apple.  Or - don't send out updates filled with bugs in the first place)
Everything (several applications) had to be uninstalled in a very specific order and then restarted , then it all had to be verified with manual deletions of leftovers, and emptying the recycle bin, then another restart, then iT had to be reinstalled again and the system restarted again, and two more update downloads. Holy!!!
I love my little iPod touch, but I honestly must say, when this kind of thing happens (and it has several times now when I try to deal with iTunes or Apple), it makes me want to flush it down the toilet.

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

  • My Computer and Itunes will not recognize my ipod

I recently had to reinstall itunes on my computer. Now, my computer and itunes won't recognize my ipod. But I can change it from my computer. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do? I would really like to update my ipod!
    Thanks.

First of all, try another port on your computer. Some ports are not connected direct to the motherboard and do not recognize the iPod as well as those that are. Reset the iPod each time you connect it to another port.

  • Ipod freezes computer and itunes and has corrupt songs

    Hi,
a while back I was having problems with my 160gb IPod classic. Every time I plugged it in the entire computer, and iTunes would freeze.
This ended with a trip to the Apple store and after a lengthy session, the iPod was restored to factory settings. (The guys had a lot of trouble doing this, didn't seem an easy process)
Recently I plugged the iPod in (Windows 8) and added a few more albums.
Later on when playing the iPod on my dock, I noticed a lot of the CDs were missing, completely erased. I had heard of a bug on iTunes which removes CDs that haven't been bought via iTunes, but seems strange as NONE of my albums were bought from iTunes.
I've also noticed that songs appear to be corrupted on some albums. They begin to play, stop, then skip to the next playable song, skipping over the ones that won't play.
Problem is that when I plug it into my HP laptop, it freezes until it is unplugged again. Same with iTunes, it wont respond while the iPod is plugged in.
The computer registers it as a removable drive but says it is full. Device manager recognises it and says it is working ok and has the latest driver etc.
What I want to do it restore it to factory settings but I just can't do it via iTunes and the computer doesn't give me the option as it's not recognisable in 'My Computer' as an iPod.
Can't take it into the store again as the warranty has expired.
There must be a way to return it to factory settings, if not manually without a computer, than maybe via device manager?
I'm not too up on the technical side of things so any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Peter.

Eventually managed to restore to factory settings.
Anyone heard about that ITunes 'bug/virus' or is it just scaremongering?

My iPhone 4s hasnt been used in over 6 months. Everytime I plug it into my computer and iTunes, it says it requires a restore and update. It then comes up with an error after completing the download for the restore and update (takes around 10 minutes).Someone help me as I'm using the original iPhone 3 at the moment and it won't even take an ios 7 update!

Just to confirm on the screen of the iPhone do you see the itunes symbol with a cable pointing up to it?. If you do then your iPhone is inrecovery mode and would require you to restore it.
Now first you want to make sure iTunes is up to date and the cable you are using is not damaged. You also want to make sure iTunes is up to date.
Now if you get an error message then follow the article below to find out what causes the issue:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3694
In terms of the iPhone 3G that is definitely not able to update to iOS 7. Only the iPhone 4 and larter can update to iOS 7.

I have an iphone 4s that is having display issues. If I turn the phone on, it vibrates to acknowledge it successfully turned on but the screen stays solid black. I can plug the phone into my computer and itunes will recognize the phone as well. However, itunes can not do anything with the phone because the phone is locked and I can not unlock the phone because the screen is black.
    >CURVEBALL!!!<
The screen does work though! Through trial and error along side a little troubleshooting, I was able to figure out that the screen will cut on after the phone dies completely. The phone has to die completely with no battery power left. Then if I plug the phone into a charge and wait a while for it to charge, the phone will turn on like nothing was ever even wrong with it. I charge the phone up to like 30% and turn it off then bam the phone turns on but the screen is solid black again.
I am currently in the process of waiting for the phone to die and when I turn the phone back on I am going to completely remove the auto-lock and lock code off of the phone for the time being.
    Any other suggestions? Please help!

Sounds like the device was dropped at some point and damaged as a result.
Take it to Apple for evaluation and a replacement.
