Reformatting my soon-to-be-replaced Seagate HD..., Reformatting my soon-to-be-replaced Seagate HD...

Sadly, I received the email that my beloved iMac has a faulty HD. So off to the Apple store this week it goes, but hopefully without any sensitive information on it. What's the best route for reformatting my HD so that the least information stays on it? Thanks (in advance)!

Drive Preparation for Lion
1.  Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data, One Pass and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

The iMac comes up with a ? in a folder, even after starting with Option/Command/R keys pressed.
    Please help.

Call Apple to purchase replacement discs or order a copy of Snow Leopard from Apple's Online Store. Follow these instructions:
Drive Preparation and Install Snow Leopard
    1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    7. When completed quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard. Once you boot from Snow Leopard you should open Software Update and install all the available updates required. After you complete this and restart the computer open the App Store application in the Dock or Applications folder.
    8. Sign into the App Store with your Apple ID and password. Purchase and download Lion.
    9. After Lion's installer downloads, install Lion.

  • Ipad Mini Replacement and wanting to purchase AppleCare for the replacement

I have sent my iPad mini for repair of the screen and will be getting the replacement.  Can I purchase AppleCare for this replacement once I register and receive it?
    Thank you.

I don't think AppleCare+ is available for replacement devices, but to be sure you should aks Apple directly for an accurate answer.

Replacement phones are given to you in the same locking status as the one you turned in. If the old phone was unlocked, then the replacement will be.

A Gigaware 9pin to 4pin fw cable solved my issue. The Rocketfish fw cable was crap. And that thing cost me $24.99 from Best Buy. Getting my money back for sure.

    Hi Allan...
Will try to keep this short. Tried to respond yesterday...but message kept coming back as undeliverable.
    I am in SW Louisiana.
Did some checking. Back in Sept of 2006, my screen went black and was experiencing some "popping sounds" prior to it going black. Took it to Baton Rouge (about a 2 hour drive) to CompUSA. They kept it a month and "repaired" it. If I do some serious looking in boxes of old receipt files, I may be able to find the receipt. (Kept receipts because we got flooded out by Katrina in the New Orleans area and was living with mother-in-law during repairs.)
Currently I have the same little problem described earlier to you...collapse to center and black screen for about 15 minutes. Once or twice daily. It has been consistant since first happening back in August...and usually daily when on the computer.
My computer is in the G84201xxxxx range and an eMac USB 2.0.
Saw the message to look at the ones on eBay. Saw a used computer lab one for about $150. May decide to buy it. (Am leery because I bought one some years ago that turned out to be stolen -- I had to give it up when a tech working on the screen saw the serial number from a list of stolen computers from a college computer lab.)
Basically, in your opinion, this problem that I am having will or will not get worse? Capicator problem or cable problem?
Am wondering if the fix done in '06 actually replaced the cable? and WHY I was not told of the recall problem at the time. I know that I had to pay well over $100 for the fix, whatever it was.
Anyway, I will call the 1-800 number this week but expect little or no assistance from them.
When experiencing the problem initially back in 2006, I called Apple tech support and they could do nothing for me and my problem? My extended warranty had run out and was no longer renewable. Strange, if there was a recall fix out there for the problem that I was having, nothing was told to me.
    Anyway, thanks for your input!
    Joe

  • I bought an iPhone at september 2011 but it has been replaced twice, and the last time it was replaced was on February 2012... My question is till when is my warranty activated ???

I bought an iPhone at september 2011 but it has been replaced twice, and the last time it was replaced was on February 2012... My question is till when is my warranty activated ???

Your 1 year warranty starts the date of purchase of the original device. If the device is replaced that original warranty stays the same on the new device. Each replacement does come with a 90 day warranty. So if you're out of that original 1 year warranty... you will be covered for atleast 90 days on your replacement device.

  • TechTool Surface Scan 1000+ Errors. Replace Drive or Reformat?

My computer recently began freezing whenever I tried to open certain files. I found that each time the computer locked up, a Disk0s2 error flashed in the Console. After checking the SMART Status of my drive (Verified) and running Disk Utility (Repair Disk and Permissions), the problems persisted today. I ran a TechTool Surface Scan and found that my hard drive has over 1000 errors. My question is, should I take the time to reformat the drive and zero over it or should I replace my 3.5 year old hard drive?
    Thanks!

Thanks for your response. I was afraid that the writing was on the wall with this one.
    Methinks you're correct.
When I ran Repair Disk, it found two errors, one about a discrepancy in the volume of files and another in the volume directory count. It told me that 1 HFS Volume had been repaired. I'm not sure what this really means.
Always run RD repeatedly until you get two "clean" runs in a row. Each time RD fixes something, something else may be affected, or may not show up until the first thing is fixed.
RD attempts to fix the directory structure, basically the locations of every bit of millions of bits of data scattered across the HD platters. If this directory becomes corrupt, then the data cannot be located/accessed, even if it is still "intact" (would require data recovery software).
As far as an HD replacement goes, it looks like the Seagate Momentum XT might be a good option. Any thoughts?
If 5 people respond to that question, you could easily get 5 different opinions. For my preferences, Seagate has slipped over the last year or two, and although I like the idea of their hybrid drive, I will not buy one until I see reviews reflecting consistent quality. That is my recommendation to you; take a look at some reviews (Tom's hardware, newegg, Amazon, xlr8yourmac, etc.) and see what looks good to you. Another thought, I like to compare it to car brand loyalty. Is a Chevy or a Toyota or a Ford or a Honda, etc. "better?" My current favorite is Hitachi.

  • Is there a replacement for CS6 coming out soon and what will it be called

Is there a replacement coming out for CS 6 and what will it be called

Adobe still sells CS6 (for now anyway).
    http://www.adobe.com/products/catalog/cs6._sl_id-contentfilter_sl_catalog_sl_software_sl_c reativesuite6.html
Click the Buy button then I want to buy: Upgrade. Then complete your purchase.
However, the days of upgrading every other version are gone. Before Adobe released the Cloud, starting with CS6, they amended the upgrade policy and were requiring upgrades with every version.
But that all disappeared soon after when Adobe chose to discontinue perpetually licensed versions altogether last year and go 100% Cloud (subscription) only when they launched CC. They're still selling CS6 for those who insist on it but it'll no doubt disappear over time and there will be no CS7 perpetually licensed version.
The future in Adobe's eyes without doubt is the Cloud, requiring monthly payments and automated periodic license checks on Adobe servers via the internet.

  • I have a MBP 15" from late 2007, right before the unibody.  The battery has just entered "Replace Battery Now" state after several months in "Replace Battery Soon".  Where can I purchase a replacement battery?

Everything on Amazon gets terrible reviews, and I'll bet they are in the same state already.  The machine still runs great, so I don't need to replace it for what I need.  Appreciate any direction on this.

  • Iphone 5 makes a rattling noise from day 1, the replacement also makes this similar noise. customer care can provide me with another replacement but can not promise if the new replacement will have this noise or not. can i get a refund ?

my iphone 5 from day one makes a rattling noise when you shake the device.
the replacement i recieved also makes the similar rattling noise, apple calls it a "common problem" and says its the autofocus of the camera which makes the noise, but people i know are not experiencing any such noise in their evices, hence its not their in all the iphone.
honestly investing Rs 45000 in india i dont expect my device to have a stupid defect as this one,
In my latest conversation i have had with a senior representative of apple care iv been given an option to have anpther replacement but they cant promise me that the new replacemnt will have no such rattling noise it might be even worse.
since apple cant promise me a replacement without any such noise and my device is not even 90 days old, and since apple calls it a common problem in iphone5 is it possible that they give me replacement of 5c or 5s and il pay the difference in price or just have a refund ? since they cant provide me with a solution and keeping this device with this defect is not a solution with me.

Sorry if it's over 14 days apple does not refund the device, just sit tight and keep on asking for a device that doesn't rattle, be firm but polite about your position on the matter.
    Politeness works wonders

  • I have an iphone 5 that was originally with verizon but has been unlocked now by them and the phone is still under the apple warranty, if I go to replace for power button malfunctioning, will they give replace it with an unlocked phone as well?

I currently have an iphone 5 that was verizon locked but has been unlocked by them because of my contract, the phone is still under the apple warranty but the power button is not working, if it was the case that apple has to replace it with another phone, will they replace with an unlocked phone now?
    thanks

The SIM Lock is stored on the Apple Activation Server - if it has been correctly unlocked by a network then this would have been done on the Activation Server.
When you get your replacement handset through Apple they mirror the activation server details of your existing handset and the current SIM LOCK status is mirror'd onto the new device.
(100% Accurate - done mine 2 weeks before christmas due to original 5 sleep button stopped working)

  • Search and Replace String Function replaces line feeds when I only want spaces replaced?

I need to replace every instance of a space or series of spaces in a multi line string with commas (or tabs) so I can dump it into a spreadsheet.
I am using the regular expresion [\s]+ and it works but it is also replacing the end of lines (\r\n) too.
How can I make it replace the spaces but leave teh end of lines intact?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    replace.vi ‏6 KB

Right click on the search string and change it to '\' Code Display. Enter the space character (\s) correctly - you've got \\s right now.

  • I have purchased Apple TV and seagate central. I am able to access seagate central from my ipad3, how to access the seagate central media hard disc from apple tv

I have recently purchased Apple TV 3 and seagate central.
I am able to access the media in seagate central from my ipad 3
Is there any application in Apple TV to access the media in seagate central directly
There are applications to access YouTube etc
Why can't there be application to access our own hard disc?

I am trying to do this as well.
From all the forums and websites and blogs I've sifted through it seems it isn't possible at this stage.
A not so functional option is to access your media through the "SeagateMedia" app on iOS and then using airplay - switch the video/song/whatever over to Apple TV.
Problem is - it seems to only be able to play compatible file types ie won't play a ripped .AVI. So this method is flawed.

  • Ipod nano 2nd gen, 5 years old, has short battery life. Can the battery be replaced? If not, does apple have a replacement program? how much?

    Details:
5 year old 2nd Gen Ipod nano only works for an hour the most. Battery may be approaching end of life.
Can this still be replaced? if not, what are my options? Does apple have a replacement program?

Just would like to share with you, my experience with a friend's Nano with a smiliar problem
The battery level could be too low to boot up the OS of the iPod, which even may corrupted (if you see a folder icon).
The best way to fix it, is to connect it with different device other than your PC as it is likely not get charge at all, e.g.
    1. car charger
    2. ac charger
    3. ipod speaker dock system
    4. using firewire cable
    5. with a Mac computer
The key is to charge the battery level up to the minimum for you to put your Nano into disk mode
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
once you see the "tick" mark, connect it with a computer, and try to do a Restore for your iPod. In case you still do not manage to get your iPod to be recognized by a PC, I am afraid you have to connect it with a Mac, very likely it will allow you to do a Restore as I did last night
