REFORMATTING VIDEO

SX170IS :  i shot some video i want to send out... apparently its to large...  can i reformat it, even after its shot ?    thanks, dave.

Just iTunes. Plug in the iPod and after it shows up in iTunes you can use the Restore button from the summary page to reformat it to Mac format.
And if you want you can also leave the iPod formatted in Windows format if you wish. It will still work fine on a Mac.

  • Trying to reformat videos to play on ipod

I just purchased a ipod video, i'm trying to import my old videos from my computer. I purchased the QT pro to help with this. I followed the instruction that I was given to reformat the files, but when I get to the progress bar i'm getting nothing. I've let the progress bar run for 5 and 1/2 hours and i'm just now at 30%. Please let me know if i'm doing something wrong, or if ther's a better way. By the way my OS is windows XP.

I found a free program that converts video to files compatible with the iPod video:

  • Not converting to ipod format

Hi, have read all the discussions relating to reformatting videos. I have .mov file, tried to convert via Videora and PSPware and both have failed. We have tried to eliminate all possibilities, but cant tell why we can't transfer to ipod even just as .mov file. Is this an issue with the type of file or is there something I should be doing to transfer to ipod?

    Have you seen this, it might help you;

  • Can't figure out how to add bars to reformat 16:9 video to fit a 4:3 frame

Hi all, I'm a long-time user of iMovie 5, and a professional Avid video editor. On my home computer, however, I have some serious issues using the "dumbed down" version of iMovie '08 which, unfortunately, it seems I must use if I want to avoid purchasing new software, and don't feel like trucking my personal work to the office.
Usability issues aside, I'm at a total loss as to how to reformat my imported video clips. At the moment I have a .dv file which is exported from FCP in a 16:9 format. I want to take this into iMovie '08, format it to fit a 4:3 window, add it to a bunch of other clips, and export a finished 4:3 movie to then put on DVD.
Importing is fine, editing is meh but works (sorry, I'm a snob), and exporting works fine, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to put a reformat on the video. The goal is to have black bars on the top and bottom of the video image, squeezing the anamorphic 16:9 video down so that people don't look vertically stretched in a 4:3 window.
What I do NOT want to do is crop out any of the video footage. The goal is to keep all of the video, and just add the black to the top and bottom in order to make it look, well, normal. For the life of me, I can't figure it out. it looks like this would be something that the Crop / Fit tool does, but that won't let me extend the fit outside of the frame of the video, nor will it let me put a 16:9 fit inside of the 4:3 viewing window (I only have a 4:3 option when in 4:3 mode, and only have a 16:9 option when in 16:9 mode).
Thank you very much for your insight.
PS: Just as an aside, why on earth did apple move iMovie '08 away from timeline-based editing? The old iMovie versions were quite powerful editing suites in their own right - even with limited video and audio layers. The '08 version seems to just hate users who want to do anything remotely close to frame-specific edits.

I guess I've got to add the flags back in somehow? The weird thing is that the movie is the correct aspect ratio in iTunes and Quicktime, just not iMovie '08.
iTunes, QT Player, and previous versions of iMovie all relied on the "Current Display Size" setting to set the aspect ratio. (I.e., you can modify this setting and change the aspect ratio by merely changing the display size in QT Pro and re-saving the file for these apps.) Unfortunate, iMovie '08 looks for the flag for the main display/export, and, if Apple hasn't changed things, uses the "current display size" to set the aspect ratio of the thumbnails... Weird.
How would I add those flags back in? Can I just open in quicktime and save a new copy? Or am I going to have to contact the original source of the material and have him export it again (with different settings? And what settings would those be? He's coming from FCP).
If the content is of exceptional quality, you could try re-exporting it in MPEG Streamclip using the "Export to DV..." option. This will re-flag the file with the aspect ratio you select in the export window. Also, be advised that performing destructive edits in iMovie '08 that forces the data to be re-written to new containers will lose the flag in the process unless Apple has made some recent changes to avoid this.

  • Best software to recover video files on reformatted SD and CF Cards? Or worth seeking professional help?

    Hi all,
The person I work for has mistakenly re-formatted a collection of SD and CF cards (incl. Sony F3, AJA Ki Pro Mini). He needs to recover video files.
Is it worth it to have the cards professionally recovered at a place like Tekserve, or is there a software program anybody here has had success with? There seems to be a lot of recovery software out there and it's hard to tell what's trustworthy. I should mention that the software doesn't have to be free, it just has to be effective and cheaper than a professional recovery.
A few other stray but important questions:
-What are the risks of running a recovery program that fails? In other words is it possible for software to damage the old data so that no other program has a chance of successfully recovering it?
-Most importantly: is it possible to recover at least some data from a card that has been reformatted and then recorded over a bit, but not all the way? I have read that if the whole card has been recorded over, the old data is irretrievable. But there's only a little bit of new material on this card.
    Thanks!

Reformating storage devices usually involves deleting the catalog that tells the OS where files start and end. The files are still there unless you have chosen a secure erase where the systems writes zeros over the whole drive several times (sometimes known as a DoD format).
What this means is as long as you do not try to write to the media, the files are still there. Best practice would be to clone the media then work on the clone. This way you do not introduce any addiional changes.
The more important element of your question is "can I get these files that still exist off the the media?". The answer is a resounding "maybe".
I have used FileSalvage to try to recover material from a failing hard drive. It was pretty successful with small files (Word docs, Acrobat files, Adobe Illustrator images and the like)  but considerably less successful with large video files. I believe it is because video is more sensitive to end of file (eof) markers and if those are not found, the whole file is useless.
If you have reused the card, the chances of getting anything go WAY down as the way files are written to storage devices is not that orderly. Bits get written all over the drive/ flash storage. When there is no catalog to tell the OS what memory locations have a purpose, new files can be written over multiple old files. Will this completely remove any chance to recover your material? Most likely, but if you are purchasing software anyway it will not cost you any additional cost to try on those cards. You might get lucky.
Also, in the locking the barn after the paddle is lost upstream, this is why I always create two copies of the contents of cards before I start editing. 1 copy goes on the on-line editing RAID and the other copy go to an archive drive. Then once a week, I'll back up the archive drives in the studio to a set off-site. This way I have 3 copies while I'm working and 2 copies once the project is closed out. Given the low price of hard drives, it's easy to create redundant backups.
    Good luck,
    x

  • Ichat video not working after reformat

Thanks for coming here to help me on my problem guys. I am a PC user and my friend is an apple macbook owner. We always videochat with eachother over AIM. Tonight We were video chatting fine and my friend wanted to reformat his macbook. After he did that, he came back online onto ichat and now when he does a videochat request, it seems to load fine but his video is a black box and I cant hear him. He can however hear my mic. On his end he can see his own video fine and everything looks ok in the setup settings as well.
What setting is it that is causing this problem for us? I know his router settings are fine because its always worked. All he did was a reformat of his laptop that caused this situation, Im not an avid mac user though so Im not quite sure how to solve this one. I would imagine its not the port settings in the actual router though because like i said, it was working fine right before the reformat.
Thanks for the help guys. Hes done a system update so far and is 100% updated if that helps.

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
Not sure why this got Bumped so quickly. It has not been more than 15 hours since you first posted. I post for about 3 hours each of my evenings 7.00pm to 10.00 Pm my local time. The first post was recorded at 05.46 (The discussion Software displays Local time to each logged in reader.)
Why on earth did he want to reformat ?
    Creating a second Partition ?
iChat to AIM on a PC can be notoriously difficult to get sorted.
Often it either works or it does not despite any tweaking of settings.
If he wiped his drive and reinstalled the OS we cannot rule out the router but I will come back to that.
    Tweaks/Settings.
A MacBook tells me he is most likely on Leopard (10.5.x) or Snow Leopard (10.6.x)
    A) Firewall.
He should go to System Preferences > Security > Firewall
    i) Leopard - He should use Allow All or Allow Specific apps and Add iChat to the List
ii) Snow Leopard - He should go to the Advanced Button in the same place as listed above and Allow Signed Apps and add iChat to the List.
iii) In either, Stealth should not be ON in the Advanced Button.
    B) Internet speed
    i) In Leopard go to System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming and set the speed to 1.5Mbps T1/Intranet/LAN
    Restart iChat if Open.
ii) The above setting does not exist in Snow Leopard.
iii) In either go to iChat menu > Preferences > Video Section and set the Bandwidth Limit to 500kbps as starting, test, point.
    C) Router.
If he used Port Forwarding to Open the ports his device may well have wanted him to Point the ports to a Specific IP (Computer)
His computer may no longer have that IP as Reformatting makes it look like a new device.
If his device has it it would be better to use UPnP.
The fact his Preview does not resolve in to the Pic-in-Pic part and show you, plus the fact you see Black instead of video with associated Audio issues suggests a Speed issue (the Quicktime Setting in Leopard if set to Automatic is actually only 384kbps).
    D) Updates.
IF he did an Archive and Install the process reinstalls the OS but leaves all the apps and personal stuff untouched (Settings are a choice along the way)
This means his iChat may not match his OS as it gets Updated in some of the OS Updates.
He should Update to either 10.5.8 Here --->> http://support.apple.com/kb/DL866
    Or the 10..6.4 ---->>> Here http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1048
Everything else we know to try is in this Users Tip http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1968438 Listed above the Topics.

  • Reformat 60g ipod video for windows

I would like to reformat a recently purchased ipod already mac formatted (and loaded with files) to windows. The idea would be to use the ipod and itunes with both pc and mac.
I haven't purchased any songs from itunes and plan to use my existing music as mp3s rather than m4p or m4a on the ipod.
I have an external hard drive (formatted fat32) which can be used to back up music/video files which reside on the mac computer (and are also present on the ipod), transfer them over to the pc, then back onto the ipod again after formatting.
I've read that apple does not officially support a windows formatted ipod to be used on a mac. I've also read that using an ipod formatted fat32 on a mac slows down read/write in itunes, etc, but not sure if that also applies to the latest ipod video units.
Can someone verify this? I would like to be able to use the ipod on both platforms.
Can I just format the ipod with windows into fat32, or do I have to use the apple software to do this?
Would using the ipod like this be more trouble than it is worth?
    dell   Windows XP

    Thank you Niel.
I have an old winme computer that I've been using to format my external hard drives to FAT32 and have had success for 200g and 300gb drives which xp and mac then recognize, but there probably is some advantage in using Apple's refomating software for the ipod, so I will use that.
The ipod will be used on both xp and mac. I came across a post regarding using one of the older ipods formated in FAT32 and how that file system slowed certain functions with the mac as opposed to HFS formatted ipod and was wondering if anybody has experienced this with the ipod video.
When using ipod with both xp and mac, are there any other issues to be concerned with, like syncing with itunes, etc?

  • HT1329 Can I reformat a video ipod from a mac format to a windows format?

I am wanting to give my old video ipod to my mother. The problem is that I use a mac and she uses a PC. Am I able to reformat this ipod to a PC for her?

    Hello there Kelly,
When you follow the regular syncing steps outlined in this article named iOS: Syncing with iTunes found here http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1386, iTunes in Windows will prompt you that the iPod needs to be erased and synced. That process will format the iPod to the use the Windows file system.

  • Reformat to Mac -- Lose all videos?

I made the switch from PC to Mac (which I love!) but it seems that getting my iPod to do it with me is causing some problems, so here's my dilemma (along with a lot of questions...)
When I connected my iPod to my Mac, the computer recognized it but iTunes did not, prompting me to download an iPod update, which I did not accept because it prompted me to restore it to its factory settings since it was not Mac formatted. I did not want to do either because I have a few videos on it that I wouldn't be able to restore if I went with those options.
However, the reason I have those few videos on my iPod is because a friend who uses a Mac put them on there for me using his computer. So if his Mac/iTunes could recognize my iPod plugged in, what am I doing wrong that mine can't?
Does reformatting my iPod to Mac settings erase everything on my iPod? Is there any way to save those videos from my iPod to my computer? Or am I just going to have to suck it up and do without the videos?
Thank you in advance for any help given, it will be much appreciated (even if it does turn out that I can't save these videos, I just need to understand all my other problems)

    Fixed on my own!

  • HELP! Reformatted drive with Video source files

I accidentally reformatted my external drive that contained the source files for all of my iMovie '09 projects/library. I am currently using Data Rescue II to attempt recover. Fortunately (I hope), all of the project files are on my internal drive.
In case the data recovery doesn't work, does anyone know if I will be able to reimport the video and have the project files recognize the new sources?
Please don't tell me I should have backed up. In fact this was the very thing I was trying to do. I simply made the biggest bonehead mistake in reformatting the wrong drive. I am so bummed now. All of my family videos.
I would greatly appreciate any assistance.

I lately made a test, by dragging Events in Finder to a diff. location.. = project kaputt . dragged files back to original location = project fine.
when you look inside a iM-Project file with the plist-Editor (part of the DevTools), you'll notice as item 62 a 'link', e.g. "~/Movies/iMovie Events.localized/HF100 Import/clip-2008-05-23 23;06;51 1.mov" .. which reads in Human English:
my import is in the iM-Events folder, named 'HF100 Import', followed by the naming scheme, iM uses automatically..
=> in your case, if you re-import, you HAVE to use the exactly same Event names as before! .. in theory, your re-imports of video could work..
How many Projects/Events are we talking about.. ?

    you should have backed-up ..

  • Web pages and videos don't load smoothly after I reformatted my hard drive.

    Hi:
I reformatted my MacBook hard drive 4 days ago, then the internet didn't run smoothly in my MacBook. If I typed in an internet address, my Safari would freeze for 10 seconds. Most videos also had problems loading in my Safari. I checked my internet upload and download speeds, and those are normal. What can go wrong with my MacBook? How can I fix it? Thank you very much for any suggestions.

Have you tried a different browser? Download Firefox or Google's Chrome and see if either of those works better.
Have you run the updates for your computer?

  • Biggest Blunder of my Life? Reformatted 1tb of Samples and Videos NEED HELP

i reformatted a tb of samples , music, videos, some are backed up but its months of work that isn't.
is there a disk i can buy to recover? or any other suggestions. i feel like throwing up.
    thanks

Just don't panic. I have more experience of recovering files on PC but you should find a specific type of recovery for if the drive has been formatted as opposed to just files deleted. Don't be too quick to consider that the files are lost if the first attempt/software doesn't work. Another bit of software might do 100% better than the first depending on the quality of software and condition of the files but if you've done a straight format of the drive and nothing else there is a good chance the files are there and recoverable.
It will be a slow process though as you have such a lot of data to recover - don't rush it and don't give up too quick! Good luck!

  • 5k iMac i7 3 tera fusion 4 gig video fusion drive won't reformat help

MMy bto 5k shipped from China sunday night and arrived in Maine this morning.... Amazing when you think about it for a bto
iinstallation and set up we're going fine and I started up boot camp assistant to crate a temp boot camp while I wait for my thunder bay 4 box to take the drives for my old Mac pro when boot camp will have a1 tera SSD all to itself....
so carved off a 700 gig boot camp partition which the assistant formatted fat I then plugged is the lighting to FW adapter in a LaCie 2 tera fw 800 drive to act as a bridge to my LaCie DVD burner which uses the old fw400 cables and inserted my new shrink wrap win 8.1 retail 64 DVDs and up comes the win 8 install in very tiny type in a tiny window which got a bit of a laugh out of me.
And I go through it to the point of selecting that boot camp partition and then said it could not use a fat partition and I should reformat it from the win 8.1 installer which I did and then it said it could not use and unknown partition so I said great and booted back to 10-10 and the boot camp tool to put things back and it said it could not I then went to disk tools and it also said the  3tera fusion could not be either reformatted or put back to a single partition I was on with tech support where I went up through 4 levels of support due to the 5k bto which most had no knowledge of. We tried the optioncommand r to get to DT and the same problem as did going to reinstall from the net which after a 30 min down load could not reformat either it is now kicked to Cupertino with a call back tomorrow
am betting it will take a Unix comand line to reformat but be aware there may be boot camp issues with my configuration
and  any help here will be great fully received

  • MSI KT3 Ultra-ARU video lock-ups

    Hello,
I have a 3 month old MSI KT3 Ultra-ARU.  I am running Windows XP Professional and I am having a periodic lock-up where the screen will show blinking colored blocks and the system will freeze.  Sometimes just hitting reset will cure the problem.  Other times, hitting reset will create two vertical stripes of colored blocks scrolling down the screen.  I have used the board on two entirely separate systems (One with AMD Athlon 2000+, Gainward GeForce 4200, 512 MB Samsung 2700 DDR, Western Digital Expert HD (tried both IDE #1 and RAID controller) (Other System, Athlon 1800+, a different Gainward Geforce 4200, 256 Crucial 2700 DDR, an older Maxtor hard drive).  In either system, every once in a while, the system will freeze as described above (it has happened in Netscape 7.0, Microsoft Word 2000, America's Army game).
I have played around with the bios settings, reformatted hard drives, tried various revisions of the nvidia display drivers, swapped out video cards, etc.  Any ideas?  Do I have a bad board?  Do I need to flash the BIOS?  If the board is bad, what do I need to do to return it?
    Thanks,
    Matt Gumaer

The second system has a 330 watt enermax power supply.  With the new system I put together, I put virtually the same board (MSI KT3 Ultra 2 with bluetooth and RAID), everything is the same as my first system (except the KT3 Ultra-ARU) and the stability is fine.  So, I'm reasonably confident its not the power supply.
