Reformatting when installing Snow Leopard
Hi guys, I just installed Snow Leopard today. But apparently while using Migration Assistant, I accidentally import all my stuff back, which I don't want to because there's loads of unwanted stuff. So I was wondering if it is advisable to reformat the computer again and do a clean install. By the way, this would be my third attempt because I didn't do a clean install during the first attempt. Yes, I may have OCD and may sound like an amateur, but hopefully one of you guys maybe able to help me out.
Thanks in advance.
While granted, every full rewrite of a hard drive is probably more harmful that leaving it alone, the frequent writing and rewriting of a hard drive due to adding and removing data is probably more harmful than a single sweep. Think of repeated mechanical actions. As these drives though are typically rated for 10,000 hours MTBF and more though, a relatively new machine shouldn't experience a much more earlier death as a result of either procedure. My procedure while it may not be as quick, would at least help you isolate whatever your issue is. Simply reformatting risks losing data quicker, as any data loss or corruption anywhere in your backups may not be as easy to recover if you tried a simple wipe. I try to attempt the least risky approach first, and only risk the most when nothing else works. See my backup FAQ*:

How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update. While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
Restart the computer.
Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
Wait for installer to finish loading.
E. If updating:
Download and install update(s)
Use Software Update, or
Download standalone updater(s).
If the above does not work then you may need to first repartition and reformat the hard drive then do a clean install of Snow Leopard. Be sure you first make a backup so you can recover all your files. -
No response when installing snow leopard disk
I bought a "wiped" machine. I install the snow leopard disk I bought and hold down "c" key and all I get is the white screen with the grey apple logo. disk stops spinning and that is it. Help!!! it is a birthday gift and I am running out of time.
so I bought the snow leopard Mac OS X disk (per a chat with the online apple sales folks)
Then it's almost a certainty you have a retail disk, which is good.
I think the computer was just wiped improperly
No matter how badly, or incorrectly a hard drive was erased, there's nothing to stop the Mac from booting to a DVD, other than the following...
(or the age of the computer and install disk are incompatible).
That would be the most likely reason at this point. Without knowing exactly what Mac model you purchased, this is a guess, but Snow Leopard will not boot to any Mac with a PowerPC CPU. It requires Intel.
Somewhere on your Mac, there will be a visible serial number. Do not post it on these forums. Go to this site and enter it in the open text field. It will tell you exactly what model Mac you have, and its hardware configuration. Please note here what model Mac you have and CPU type. -
Problem with iphoto 09 (lost all faces/locat) when installing Snow leopard
Hi,
Before updating to the new snow leopard I did a back up using time machine so I am safe with regards to all photos I have. I first use to use Aperture 2 but found it not useful and when Iphoto 09 came I bought it and imported all photos from Aperture library to iphoto.
I then spent days and days updating the face recognition and also updated the locations on all photos, I have about 10000 photos so it took a while..Then I made a back up with everything and updated to the new snow leopard. Now all my faces and locations are gone. The photos are still in the old aperture library but I really do not want to spend another 3 days or so updating all the faces again.
Also one small issue, I am not able to update my aperture to version 2.1.4 as when I click on aperture it says you have version 2.1 and it is not compatible with snow leopard. tried to download the 2.1.4 but that also does not allow me to update...
Any idea on what to do??What do you see in the iPhoto Window?
tried to download the 2.1.4 but that also does not allow me to update...
Where is Aperture? All the Apple apps need to be where the installer puts them. In the case of Aperture that's loose in the Applications Folder, not in a sub-folder and not anywhere else.

IMac freezes when installing snow leopard
This iMac intel was formerly owned by a friend. i got it last week and he said I would own it if I could fix the two major problems:
(1) The LCD screen has alot of dints/freezed pixels when running linux, and these freezed pixels are roughly distributed on several horizontal strip zones. Please refer to the attached pictures. And when booting Linux, some words are wrongly displayed, which doesnot happen on my another PC which runs the same version of linux.
(2) Although there is the above problem, this imac runs well with Fedora OS 6. however, when I try to install Mac OS 10.6, it freezes on the first step of installation. More serious, there are distorts of pictures and more dints/pixels. some times, the cursor of the mouse is surrounded by some fixed pixels that move together with the cursor.
So my question is:
(1) Whats the major problem of this iMac, video card, logic board or the LCD screen? I do not believe the logic board ahs big problem, because this machine runs well with Fedora 6. Maybe both the graphic card and the LCD has problem.
(2) If the video card is faulty, can I replace it?
Thanks all!You can attempt to reset the PRAM in the machine, but it looks as though there's a hardware problem. It's actually kind of difficult to determine if it's the graphics hardware or the mainboard, but neither are really servicable. You'll want to take it to get serviced.

New iMac arrived today, turned on and loaded fine.
After getting to the desktop, I inserted the Snow Leopard disk and restarted the computer.
I held alt at startup and selected the Snow Leopard disc from the options.
The computer proceeded to give me the 'bad RAM' error: grey screen + 3 beeps, over and over.
So did I get an iMac with bad RAM? Poorly seated RAM?
Very frustrating, I'm disappointed Apple.Good luck: Don't install a version of Mac OS X earlier than what came with your Mac
Earlier versions of OS X, including the present retail version now sold, contain drivers incompatible with the firmware installed on new Macs. You will get the exact same error code you are observing.
I'm having a hard time believing it is a RAM problem if the computer works fine in OS Lion but gives the error when installing Snow Leopard.
This has nothing to do with memory. If you don't believe me run Apple Hardware Test and see for yourself.
If AHT passes and your iMac boots Lion, Apple will tell you to pound sand.
As I said earlier,
A new iMac should have shipped with Lion. Attempting to install an earlier OS version will not work. -
How to install Snow Leopard/Logic 9 on same drive as Tiger/Logic 7
Well I guess my subject said it all. I wanna keep Tiger & Logic 7 but install Snow Leopard & Logic 9 on the same drive. When installing Snow Leopard will it give me the option to partition the hard drive? Any pros & cons to doing this? Some detailed help would be great. Thanks.
Basically from the *disk utility* you'll have to create a new partition big enough to accommodate the new system. As in the picture, select the disk you want, then shrink the size of the disk within the volume scheme graphic ( in this pic I've halved my system volume ) then hit the plus button to create a new partition and when you have it the way you want hit apply and follow the instructions. ( the highlighted blue area shows the existing data on the disk. )
Then you can install the additional system and Logic 9 on that partition. -

I have a macbook pro 1,1 with 1.83 ghz processor with 1gb of ram and 25 gb of harddrive space left. i currently have version 10.4.11. any ideas about why this is happening or how to trouble shoot?See the following:
I suggest you backup your Tiger system, then boot from the Snow Leopard DVD, use Disk Utility to erase your hard drive, then install Snow Leopard. You can then selectively restore your files from your backup. To make this process easy be sure to create your new Snow Leopard user account with the same username that you have for your Tiger account. Any third-party software that you have you should reinstall rather than trying to copy from the Tiger backup. -
Am running Tiger 10.4.11; just got Snow Leopard 10.6.3 (regular OS disk, not upgrade). When I install Snow Leopard, will it wipe everything? overwrite Tiger? Do I need to make backups of applications and files to reinstall after Snow Leopard Loads? thanks!
Hi Donald,
No it doesn't erase anything by default, it does what we used to call an Archive and Install feature, which can give you a new OS, yet preserve your files and settings if you have enough room on your HD...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
But it does it automatically unless you specifically erase the Disk, but will replace Tiger completely for the OS & several Apple Apps like Safari, Mail, etc, yet preserve your old settings for those!
If you think you may need Tiger to run any APPs that do not work in SL/10.6, then clone or backup first.
I would recomend 2 things before installing though...
Make sure you have enough RAM & HD space.
Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
General requirements
* Mac computer with an Intel processor
* 1GB of memory (I say 2GB at least)
* 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the new Mac OS X SL/10.6 Install Disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

I have OS X 10.5.8 on my iMac, I'm trying to install Snow Leopard. When I insert the disk and click install it starts, but when its about 1/4 of the way done the computer restarts and my disk spits back out. When I look to see if it installed it still says 10.5.8. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

I bought the Mac OS X Snow Leopard Install DVD from the Apple Store. -
I had to delete everything on my computer and install the operating system again , but I had to install Snow Leopard because it was the cd that came with the computer when I bought it. The problem is that I had already paid for the OS Lion and even had upgraded to the Mavericks . I do not think it's fair to have to pay again and I would like to upgrade my operating system without having to pay again for the same system.
Hi anatuta,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you are trying to upgrade your Mac to a newer version of OS X, after completing a fresh install of Snow Leopard.
If you have already purchased and downloaded OS X Lion and Mavericks, you should be able to find these items in the Purchased section of the Mac App Store.
You may find the steps in this article helpful with finding the items:
Mac App Store: Finding your purchased apps - Apple Support
If you do not see the items in the Purchased section, they may be hidden:

I installed Snow Leopard and have the latest version of iTunes. However, when I connect my iPhone 4S, it charges and iPhoto opens, but iTunes doesn't seem to recognize the iPhone. It simply doesn't appear in the left column. What gives?

Need to reformat HDD running Mountain Lion and install Snow Leopard
I bought a new Retina Display MBP and want to sell my Late 2008 MBP.
My 2008 MBP is running Mountain Lion, but I want to format the HDD and install Snow Leopard. When I try installing Snow Leopard from the DVD, I get the following message: "You can;t use this version of the application Install Mac OS X.app with this version of Mac OS X."
How can I get this done? The only way to do it is to boot from the Snow Leopard installer disc and the erase and install. In other words you cannot "downgrade" OS X 10.6 over top of 10.8. Besides, if selling it an erase and install is the best thing to do anywya - gets all your info off it.

i have a 2006 imac i just brought back from the dead when i try to install snow leopard it says i can't on this computer why not
There is your problem. DVDs that ship with a Mac are machine specific. You will need to purchase a retail copy of the DVD $29.

How do I tell my allowed pop-ups to always come to front?
I use a web-based accounting program that is very dependent on pop-ups. It's easy to forget you've left your pop-up window open and when you click on something that would bring one up it simply refreshes the one that's hiding. Is there a way to get F
