Refresh placed word-doc

hello,
i placed a word doc (word 2010)
safed the indesign doc (indesign cs6)
edited the word-doc in word
safed the word-doc
open the indesign-doc
and now...
question: how can i "refresh" the text to get the new word-content in indesign?
thanks a lot

It is possible to link the Word file when placing so that it will update, but htat is a preference option and must be chosen before placing the file to be effective. It is off by default, so unless you changed it prior to palcing the file initially the only way you can get your new changes in the ID file is to either make them manually in ID or replace the Word file.
Note that if you choose to link a Word file any changes you might make, including formatting, will be lost when the linked file is updated (which is probablythe main reason this option is off by default).

  • Grey lines across my Placed Word doc

What is causing grey lines across my Placed Word doc and how do I get rid of them?

It looks indeed -- from your screenshot -- like you've got paragraph rules enabled as a default setting currently in your document.
Before you place the Word document in your InDesign document try the following:
Edit > Deselect All (to ensure you have nothing selected).
Type > Paragraph Styles - ensure [Basic Paragraph] is selected.
Type > Character Styles - ensure [None] is selected
Type > Paragraph. From the Paragraph panel menu choose Paragraph Rules
Select Rules Above (top left menu), ensure Rule On is not selected.
Select Rules Below (top left menu), ensure Rule On is not selected.
Also if you are inserting your docx into an existing text frame, check that at the insertion point (click with type tool as insertion point), the Paragraph Rules are disabled.
Next try and place your docx again. Hopefully that'll resolve the issue.

  • Placing Word docs with custom style mapping

I am trying to place Word 2007 docs in InDesign CS3 using custom style mapping.
When I place the Word doc, InDesign creates a whole new set of styles with the correctly mapped new names but with the Word style definition. It records no name conflicts with the my already existing styles of the same names. Each of the new styles has the disc icon next to it, showing it was imported.
If I delete each of the styles I can replace it with my original InDesign style, but isn't the point of style mapping to eliminate that step?
    Thanks.

This issue is now solved in the 6.0.4 update. See the release notes for item #2335625.

  • Placing Word Doc & formatting

I've heard mention of one or more scripts to help clean & apply decent formatting for Word imports. I've looked at the find/replace by list script, so far my needs have been met with Find > format italic Apply > Char Style > Ital, and Find format Bold Apply > Char style > Strong.
I'm looking at something now, plenty of everything including superscript. Just prepping this message, I see that glyphs have gone wrongs, parenthesis, replaced with for no apparent reason.
Is it time to learn Grep? I fear Grep.
The Word Doc came in as a docx, saved as .doc on a machine running Word 2003 with the compatability plugin. I think we're seeing much more character problems with docx lately. Eyeball proofing long docs for these types of things doesn't seem practicle. (Most of my type problems are happening on my laptop which has much mor muscle than my desktop, fwiw)

Fearing GREP or not, you can learn about it from the various resources you'll find with a Google search for phrases like "InDesign GREP tutorial rorohiko" without quotes. Rorohiko has an interactive  GREP query builder you can learn a lot from. I may take my own advice someday and learn more about GREP.

  • Lifting a photo off of a word doc, placing in iPhoto.

With my PC, I would make albums using Word. I would scan a photo to the Word doc and place it among text. Now, with my new Apple, I wish to take some of those photos and get them into iPhoto.
I have transferred the Word doc from the PC to my mac. I have tried to "copy" the photo, but that doesn't seem to work, as the "paste" function doesn't know what to do.
    I am in iPhoto 09 on a Mac OS X 10.6.4.
How can I get a photo off a Word doc in my Mac, and put it in iPhoto?

Or select the photo in word and print - select the PDF option and use the send PDF to iPhoto option - this will work universally for programs that use the Apple supplied print APIs

  • Placing and then splitting a Word doc

I have a long (for me) and pretty messy Word Doc that I need to bring into InDesign and turn into a 32 page report. It is a continuous doc with 7 sections.
When I bring into InDesign (place and shift+click) it creates a continouos multipage InDesign file that flows from beginning to end in a chain of text boxes.
Not sure how this is going to end up or where the page breaks are going to be, especially when I start reformatting and resizing the text and inserting images.
What I would like to do after import is to split the 7 sections at section end (so that section 1 is a chain of text frames, section 2 is a chain of text frames etc etc.). That way if I make changes in the first section it isn’t going to have a knock on all the way through the doc to the end.
If I use the Breakframe Applescript that is bundled in the script palette it seems to break the links between every text box. I suppose i could then laboriously go through an relink the boxes in Section 1, Section 2 ext but this seems quite painful.
Is there a way to achieve this? If not what would be good practice to bring the Word Doc in in defined chunks?

You can apply a paragraph style with keep option: On Next Page to each section title, and that will keep every section start on a it's own page even if you make any change.
Another option you can create book document:

  • Placing one word doc sectioned over many INDDs

Is it possible at all to place a portion of the Word doc into mulitple INDD files?
Working on a book, I am given one doc for the whole book, but must break it into chapters, etc. I can't cut and paste of course, because I lose all formatting. Our editors can't seem to grasp using word styles instead of local styling everything as normal + bold or whatever.
It's way quicker to fix this in InD using Find Replace than to fix it first in Word and break up the doc as it properly should be done. So, is there ANY way to place a part of a doc and then place the next part in the next IND chapter doc, etc?
    Any suggestions appreciated!

There are a bunch of different ways that occur to me, each with its own drawbacks. One would be to place the whole Word doc into a fresh INDD, then shift-select pages from the end of your INDD and drag them into a new one. Or use Move Pages in the same way. Here's a link to a script posted on InDesignSecrets that automates the process for you.
In the long-ago past, when I needed to work with files like yours, I just opened up the Word doc, deleted everything but Chapter 2, resaved as WordDoc-Chap2-toplace.doc, closed, reopened the original, done the same thing to Chapter 3, etc.
But no, not so far as I know: when you place a Word doc into an InDesign doc, you don't get any option, you have to flow in the whole document. You can only chop before, or chop after. Seems to me that chopping after is easier, but I don't know enough about your own workflow and your own document to tell you that chopping afterwards will be easier for you.

  • InDesign crashing when placing a word doc

I am trying to place a word doc into InDesign and it keeps crashing. Tried restarting.  Tried breaking the doc into smaller part.   Still not working.

The only time I had a similar situation with a word document, I had to save it as plain text and place that into Indesign. Nothing else worked. The downside is you lose any formatting but at least you won't have to type everything from scratch. Make a copy of your file and give it a try.

  • Cross references corrupted after placing Word document into an InDesign document

I am placing a word document which contains cross references to headers and captions/figures within the document. They seem to be fine and function correctly in the Word document, however, after I place this word doc into my InDesign doc, I take a look at the cross references panel and notice that the cross references have been corrupted. It is wrapping the wrong portions of text from the cross reference destinations. See screenshot for a visual of how the cross references are malformed. For example the 7th cross reference in the list should say Framework Details, not "Framework Detai
InDesign Cross References Panel - showing malformed bits of text
Another visual of this issue can be seen if I view the text frame in Story Editor view, see below. You can see that the cross reference source tags (blue arrow like symbols) are wrapped around the wrong portions of text. The blue tags shoud be wrapped around Framework Details and 52
    InDesign Story Editor
You can see below as to why I think the cross references are fine in the Word doc, you can see the same cross reference I used in the example above in the word doc and it is wrapping the correct portion of text:
Word - showing cross reference is formed corerctly
Why is this not being maintained after placing this file into InDesign?
Also I am not performing any cross reference updates after I import, this problem occurs immediately after the place of the doc.
Why would InDesign be having difficulty in importing these cross references? I have set up a simple test Word document with cross references to headers and figures in and they have imported fine. What could be wrong with this other particular word doc that would be causing this "corruption" of cross references? This is not only causing my cross references to break visually and lack the update capability but also I cannot export the InDesign doc to an ePub as it keeps crashing. I believe from my reading on the web that if there is only one broken cross reference source i.e. the cross reference destination that it is trying to link to is missing, then the export to epub will fail. So this is causing a massive headache for me at the minute.
Is there anything I could be looking at in the Word doc to try and figure out why the porblem is occuring in the first place?
If anyone has any tips or a possible solution to this I would really appreciate it. Even better if someone knows the reason why this is happening I can tackle it from the source and prevent it happening time and time again.
    Thanks, Dave

    Only bad experiences, Peter ...
I've seen this character shifting before on numerous occasions, both with cross references and with hyperlinks. (It's especially funny with hyperlinks, 'cause you can see that the outline box shifts one character at a time per each next link...)
The thing is it's not just limited to hyperlinks and cross refs. Dave's screenshot doesn't show bold, italics, or other local formatting, but it's a fair bet these are off by a couple of characters as well.
Dave's experiment of making a "minimal" Word document to confirm it's a persistent bug didn't work. I found the same thing: either a document comes in fine, or everything is foo-bar right from the start. There must be some internal Word code that InDesign forgets to count as 'a character position'. Without delving into the Word file with some very advanced tools, it's anyone's guess what code that would be.
I can only offer the one solution that works for me: in Word, remove all hyperlinks (which is what Word uses for internal links as well as for external ones) and convert all cross-references to text. Then, if the file finally imports fine, re-build them in InDesign. It's a cumbersome workaround, but slightly better (only just) than checking each reference, delete, rebuild, check next -- etc. (And with that the chance that your other text attributes are also off.)

  • A font not used in an MS Word doc is showing up in the PDF properties and won't embed

A friend needed a new manuscript uploaded to a publishing site. I retyped it in MS Word (2007) using NO formatting shortcuts and using only ONE font (Georgia)  for both body and headers/footers. Placed all the jpg illustrations on the pages. Then saved it in the required PDF format for the publisher's system to use. They also require that ALL fonts/symbols are embedded. Even ONE character that is not embedded will void the file. I'm now on attempt 17.
When I checked the properties on this PDF file, the font I used, including italics, symbols and bolding, are noted as embedded. However, it also says that there is ARIEL font (which I did not use) that is NOT embedded. AARRGGHH.
This gal wants her book ready in two weeks. HOW can I resolve this? Any ideas? I saved it once through MS Word using the PDF option, but also tried it through my Photoshop Elements. Same result. My PC uses Windows 8 (NOT 8.1) and the Adobe Reader XI.0.7. The Java files are the most current update as of yesterday.

It seems to me to be a problem of MS Word, not Adobe Reader.
Also, I don't know how you can convert a Word doc to PDF with Photoshop Elements.

  • Converting MS Word docs with coloured bacgrounds to pdf

Forgive an Acrobat 'dope' but this outwardly appears to be a simple problem ....... that I can't figure out!
For work I am using Microsoft Office Word 2003 (MS Office Pro 2003) and Acrobat 8 Pro.  I have no problem converting an MS Word doc, with background or foreground images and text, into a pdf.  However, if I give any MS Word doc a coloured background, using the Format Menu > Background > and then selecting a colour, that colour is not carried across in the conversion to pdf - I end up with a standard white page, instead of the coloured one!
Where am I going wrong?  Or is this coloured background something that Acrobat won't convert, whatever I do?  I don't wish to produce a 'pseudo' effect by placing a coloured image behind the text (which I know will work) because the pdf file sizes become larger than I want.  I want to 'colour the paper' using MS Word's menu, and convert to a pdf with that same 'coloured paper' being the result.  Is it possible?  If so, how?
Thanks, in advance, for any help that may be available out there ......

In WORD: TOOLS>Options>Print>Background Colors and Images (I already had background printing checked, but that refers to the printing process, not the background. Checking this other box does the trick. It is probably off by default to keep from using ink in regular printers.)

There are 2 options I can think of:
    1. If they want to add commentary to a report book, Report Books can now contain MS Office documents, which can be included - they must be loaded onto the Workspace first. This is probably best for items like a quarterly management pack.
    2. If this is something the users wish to run over and over again, it's probably best to setup a MS Word document containing the reports in the book to be used with Smart View: You can export the current page of the current data object to Word, PowerPoint or Excel as an image. After insertion, you can re-query the corresponding Web application to refresh the image.
-> This creates a standard report template (in Word, Powerpoint or Excel), which can then be modified by the users to add commentary as required.
Check out the Exporting to Smart View for Office, Page 103 from the Workspace Users Guide (bpmui_user11.1.pdf) for more details: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E12825_01/nav/portal_2.htm

  • A Spreadsheet Embedded in a Word doc

This may be one of those very basic things, but I just can't find an answer in the documentation myself. I have a Word document that has an Excel spreadsheet embedded in it. When I make a pdf from that Word doc (Acrobat Pro 7.0), the Excel icon show up in the pdf but it's apparently only an icon. I can't open it.
Is there a way to make a pdf with embedded objects like spreadsheets or Power Points in it that the reader can then open and access?
    TIA...

Are the images placed in a table? Many Word user have the habit of doing that. Tables are not handles the same way in Word and Pages so they get "hidden" in Pages. One way to find this out is to change the size of the paper of the document. You do that in the Page setup in the file menu. Create a document that is much longer that the default one and see if you images will pp up.

  • IMPORTING WORD DOCS

I am wondering, what is the best way to import text into an InDesign document? I usually just drag a word doc onto the InDesign document - but i sometimes get issues where hard returns are placed in the middle of paragraphs and other annoying glitches. Can anyone tell me what is the best way to do this?
    thx,

It won't turn a sow's ear into a silk purse if that's what you want to know.
ID doesn't just add hard returns in the middle of paragraph for no reason. There's got to be something in that file.
