Refreshing the desktop?

I've been having a problem where my icons and things on the desktop have left over things displaying from other programs. Without restarting, is there a way to refresh the desktop?

Applications that are no longer running shouldn't leave anything visible on the Desktop. Cached files are stored in separate cache locations, not on the Desktop. File icons, application icons, and the like can appear on the Desktop and in the Desktop folder. Why you have items remaining from programs no longer running is beyond me, but suggests you may have other problems to fix such as a preference file or a corrupted cache file not related to the Desktop but to the application that caused the zombie images to appear.
Hard to tell when I can't see to what you are referring.

I know this will sound nuts, but every time i download something to my desktop, it won't show there. But if i go with the file manager it is ther at ~/Destop.

XFCE 4.4 uses FAM (File Alteration Monitor) to get notification when a file or directory changes. Don't forget to add 'fam' to the list of DAEMONS in /etc/rc.conf

How do i refresh the screen on the Desktop?

i have multi screen computers, each monitor has a different wallpaper (by setting a pic file as web content)
so, a simple solution to change the wallpaper would be to change the file so that the wallpapers displayed would be different. however, the results will not show unless i hit the F5 button to refresh the Desktop manually.
is there a way to refresh the desktop programmatically?

iCloud is not currently available for your desktop. You may be confusing iCloud with the cloud drives available from other developers such as Microsoft and Google.

Window Tabs: dragging the window tab to the desktop

Window Tabs: Tried to grab the top of the finder window and wound up dragging the window tab to the desktop.
This creates a mini-window have to logout to remove.
If you right click on the finder icon in the dock and select show all windows they are in the list selecting them seems to do nothing but return you to the desktop.
What the heck is it?

Hi roninkai I'm also experiencing this behaviour, if you drag a finder window by its tab on to the desktop it creates a mini finder window that doesn't do anything. I keep doing it by mistake.
You can get rid of them by doing a Force Quit on the Finder from the Apple menu, this quickly refreshes the desktop and then they disappear.
Hope they fix this in the next point release.

Finder not refreshin the desktop.

When downloading files from Igetter o Firefox they download directly to my desktop... If i go through the finder / local disk / desktop i'm able to see them
But if I press F11 (to see my desktop) they don't apear...
Have to kill the finder and then appear.

I am having the same problem, except that it is not just with downloads. The same applies to mounted disks and any other icon that usually shows on the desktop. If I browse through Finder I can see the mounted removable disk or newly downloaded file, for example, but if I look on my desktop neither appear.
This has only started happening since I upgraded to Leopard earlier this week. The only way to refresh the desktop seems to be to force Relaunch Finder which is both time consuming and should not be necessary. Would appreciate any help from anyone who can offer a solution.

Bookmark drop downs that go outside the Firefox window are left on the desktop when bookmarks closed requiring a refresh to clean up

If I open Bookmarks and select a folder that is longer than the Firefox window is high, the part of the bookmarks list that falls outside the window remains on the desktop when I leave bookmarks or close the window. I must then do a refresh of the desktop to get rid of the junk. Does not happen with MS IE9. I am using Windows 7 Home Premium on a SONY VAIO laptop. It started when I went to the VAIO last November. A "Show Desktop" or a refresh of the desktop cleans it up.

Could you try disabling graphics hardware acceleration? Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches with some graphic cards/drivers.
You usually need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).

The desktop keep on refreshing

i have imac. now runs upgraded version 10.9 OS X. since yesterday there is auto refreshing on desktop.

I got some answer on search about removing Dropbox and drive(google). I had google drive which i moved to trash. After disconnecting from server , just like log off..the problem is now resolved.

In our organization we have the Hide and disable all items on the desktop setting enabled on our Windows 7 computers. As we are testing Windows 8.1 we have come across an odd behaviour with this setting: At log on the desktop is configured as expected: No
Icons. But after 90 minutes, or when running gpupdate /target:user manually, the Icons appear.
How can I make the setting stay?

Hi Johan,
After the icons appear ,I suggest you use gpresult command to check the result.
It seems that some setting overrided ""Hide and disable all items on the desktop".

Trying to figure out how to change the desktop background with powershell/batch.

The entire thing I'm doing is pretty pointless lol. But I wanted to prank my mother. This is my computer by the way nothing malicious. I just had an idea that the next time she goes to click and open opera I would have a batch files disguised as it instead
that would just say some things. Mimic deleting files. Kill exlporer.exe. Change the background to one I created saying something like GOT YA! with a troll face or something. And then either run explorer.exe again or shutdown my laptop. I don't really know

One of my user was unable to receive email from her desktop outlook, browser and her phone. On her outlook, the status of her exchange is disconnected. Then when she tried to access her OWA, this error prompted below "
"Something went wrong. We're having trouble getting to your mailbox right now. Please refresh the page or try again later. If the problem continues, please contact your helpdesk."
Her emails started coming in again after about 45minutes later. It happened twice today.
Anyone have the same symptoms as mind?

Cannot click items on the desktop

Hello,
I've had an issue where I sometimes, just seemingly randomly, I cannot click folders, items, etc on the desktop. The click just will not register anything. I have some folder, files, and the "Macintosh HD" on my desktop and I cannot click anything. I have to force restart finder and then it will work again. The first time, I thought it was a fluke, but it has happened several times now and I don't know what's wrong.
On a related note, sometimes when saving files from Entourage to desktop, nothing will show on the desktop. It will just not show up. I can find it when looking in the ACTUAL desktop folder, but not on the desktop itself.
Has anyone experienced this before? Anything I can do? The desktop issue seems knew to .6, but the saving to desktop has happened since .4. Thanks!

I had the same issue today and while it was happening, I spent some time trying to figure out why this was occurring. It was a weird end to the reasoning behind it, which is prob. why most people had never experienced something like this.
First, the two issues of not being able to click the desktop and not seeing items saved to desktop from Entourage ended up being completely related.
As soon as the problem occurred, I immediately went to clicking around the desktop and noticed nothing worked. I clicked on Macintosh HD, Folders on my desktop, files, etc and nothing would work. Also, a few minutes prior, saving to desktop from Entourage did not work. It would not show up on desktop, but would show up when I looked at the files in the folder. I knew restarting Finder would make it work again, but I wanted to know why. I went ahead and remembered that I had an issue with my monitor after every restart where I would see screens double. To make it go away, I have to go into Monitor settings, change from 60hz refresh to 75, then back again. For some reason, I started leaving it at 75, so going back and forth 2 times total. I opened the Monitor settings and changed the refresh rate to 60. All of a sudden, the files that were not showing up, DID show up, and I was instantly able to click on all of my icons on the desktop and files. Weird, I know.
All I can say regarding this is that I was not able to click anything on the desktop, I couldn't save items to desktop from Entourage, until I changed the refresh rate. Files that were "not on" the desktop, suddenly were, after the blue screen came and went after changing refresh rates.
Anyway, that's my experience and I'm thankful I do not have this problem anymore.

Old pictures on the desktop and invisible dock when I change user

I have a late 2011 macbook pro with Mountain Lion installed. This problem came out with this OS. In practice, when I log in with my secondary account (without password) and change to the administrator account (with password), the Mac loads old pictures on the desktop, and the thing where the dock's icons usually stand is invisible.
This appears not to be shown when I log back into the secondary one and re-log in the Admin.
Why this happens? And how do I fix it? Help please, it's getting quite annoying...

Most likely one of the two computers has a corrupt data which is not allowing the Sync to complete.
The Refresh feature (called "Reset" in older Firefox versions) can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your bookmarks, history, passwords, cookies, and other essential information.

Whenever I close Firefox, it remains visible until I refresh my desktop.

Whenever I close FF, the window does not disappear until I right-click on the desktop and select "Refresh." It is repeatable. Firefox is the only program doing it. If I have two FF windows open and I close one, it disappears appropriately.

Update:
A couple more things. If the FF window is straddling both of my screens it does not have any problems. It seems more likely to have problems when there are other program windows visible.
