REFS, lost hard disk space after Windows defragmentation

Hi,
first some short information about the Server.
Windows Server 2012 Datacenter
OS disk = 60 GB SSD
Physical raid Controller: Areca ARC-1261
Raid  = Level 6
Used Disks = 11 x 2TB + 1 hot spare
File system = REFS
Usable space = 16,3 TB
Real used space (what the tools and folder properties counted) = 14,0 TB
Used space (what i see in the computer overview) = 15,4 TB
Unknown space what I could see with disk scan tool (or the tools calculated) = 1,4 TB
So here what you could quickly see that i've got a "little" problem with wasted/unknown space....
How the Problem originated:
The system drive is a SSD, after running this Server about 150 days and unnecessary little Windows problems i remembered the garbage collector for SSD (TRIM).
So i wanted to schedule with "Defragment and Optimize Drives" an automatic job for cleaning the drive.
My problem was, that I couldn't deselect the big raid volume, but i gave it a try an scheduled weekly the optimization.
Next day i got some alerts "low disk space warnings", i've lost about 1 TB of disk space but could not explain how I could lost this amount of space.
After starting a resizing of the raid, i counted with file property the real used space and could not explain the shown size in the overview.
What I've tried to fix this problem:
First of all, a lot of google....
Shadow copy: checked, fully cleaned, disabled = nothing just a few GB.
Backup: checked, fully cleaned, disabled = nothing, but ran under an extra disk but... could never know what's wrong
Folder options: enabled this far that i could see system protected files and default hidden
Safe boot = tried a safe boot (some solutions for different user in the web) = nothing could not see more or less
O & O Defrag (latest server edition) = didn't support REFS
last of it, new clean installation of windows
My Questions:
Is defragmentation on refs possible/useful or is it just an bug with that  "Defragment and Optimize Drives" tool?
Are the any information's about fixing troubles on REFS or commands on PS oder cmd? (could not find anything on google)
I've got some books for WS2012 and e-books but there are no helpful information's about REFS.
I know this is a big text block, but i wanted to show you detailed the problem and my attempts to solve this problem.
I hope you could help me or show me new ways to solve this problem.
Tanks in future....!

ReFS formats by default to 64KB block sizes (shows up in Disk Management as "Allocation Unit Size" when you go try formatting).
NTFS formats by default to 4 KB block sizes and up to 64KB.
If you have 1 file that is 4KB in size, and you use ReFS (default block size), it's going to occupy the entire 64KB.  That is true of NTFS if you choose to format in 64KB (required for SQL and Hyper-V VHD's and VHDX's).
If your files are smaller than 64K, then stick with NTFS.
Yong Rhee [MSFT]
That is true for the defaults for ReFS but its possible to use a smaller allocation size using the options. Unfortunately most never think to do that.

  • Missing hard disk space after sims 3 force quit

Hi, I failed to notice I had to update to the latest version of Leopard to install the game with the result that the installer got stuck repeatedly half way through and I could only force quit the installer.
The downside to this is that I did this twice and now I'm missing around 7 gigs of hard disk space....anyone know where I can find the files to delete or how I can regain that space?

DiskWarrior, as suggests nerowolfe, won't hurt for sure. It will repair damages done to files and the directory.
Maybe you could spot where the problem files are with this freeware, Disk Inventory X. You probably could identify files that are related to the game that are left on the hard drive. Did you do a Spotlight search to see if there any left?
And I'm also wondering if it wouldn't help to clean out all the caches in case there are temp files stuck in there? Download MainMenu and use it to clean out all the caches like so:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
For the system cache clean up, choose +Deep Clean+. You will need to restart after the caches have been cleared.
Report back to let us know how it goes. Good luck!

  • Hard Disk space after OS upgrade

I just installed OS 10.4 (and the compilation update to 10.4.10) over Panther 10.3.9 on my 12" PB G4. There were about 14 GB of open space on the hard drive before install and it appeared to need 2-3 GB for the new software. After installation, my hard drive is showing only 2.99 GB available. What happened?

    Photographer:
If you do not have an up-to-date backup of your entire HDD or at least your Users Folder, that is the first order of business. Your HDD is exceedingly full and is at risk of a crash, or at least of corrupted directories and possible loss of some data. You must have a minimum of 5 GB as free or available space.
I just installed OS 10.4 (and the compilation update to 10.4.10) over Panther 10.3.9
I am not sure what installing over Panther means. Can you tell me which of these installation options you used? If you used Archive and Install, you will have a folder named "Previous System Folder", which contains your settings Preferences among other things, and all your data will still be there. If you have such a folder, check through it, and if you don't need anything there, just delete it.
The article Where Did My Disk Space Go? offers other suggestions. You can download and run What Size, which will scan your disk and sort by size. Look through contents for an unusually large file.
Please post back with an update or with further questions or comments.
    Cheers.

  • Missing 1gb of hard disk space after upgrading to 2.5 gb of RAM

I recently upgraded my Macbook to 2.5 GB RAM. I took out one 512 MB card and put in a 2 GB one, keeping the other 512 MB one in. After I booted up I noticed I was missing about a GB of space and it was running a bit slow, is this normal after changing RAM?

Not really since VM increases if the demand for VM increases, not the amount of RAM installed. Regardless of the amount of installed RAM the VM file always begins at the same size on startup - 64 MBs with Tiger and Leopard; 128 MBs for earlier versions. If one never runs out of available RAM then the VM file will never change. So in reality the more RAM installed the less likely the VM file size will increase.

  • Missing Hard Drive Space After Failed BC Partition

    Hello everyone,
I was just trying to install Windows 7 on my iMac (Late 2013) using the Boot Camp Assistant, but the partition process froze, so I ended up quitting Boot Camp (I know, I know, bad idea).
Now, I seem to be missing about a TB of hard disk space, even though the partition I was trying to create was only about 350 GB. My 3TB Fusion Drive is now showing 1.91 TB of space total. Also - probably related - everything is showing up as "Other", even though it used to be broken up into Audio/Movies/Photos, etc.
I attempted to start into Recovery mode, repaired the disk permissions (there were few problems, if any) and repaired the disk itself (it said that the Mac was fine), and I've looked at Disk Utility both in and out of Recovery mode to see if there's missing space in the partition tab, but it looks like it's just not there.
Strangely, here it recognizes that the disk is 3.12 TB, but I can't adjust the partition size, even in Recovery mode. I tried running Boot Camp again to see if I could just do a quick Windows partition (20 GB) and restore the space, but I get the error that the disk can't be partitioned. I tried doing fsck in Single User mode and logging in with Safe Mode (where I am now), just to see if either would fix the issue - but no luck.
I do have Time Capsule (2TB) so my stuff is backed up, and fortunately my Mac seems to run fine in normal mode, but is there any way to reclaim the "lost" space, or do a system wipe just to get everything back where it should be? This is
Let me know if I can provide any further information, and I appreciate your help!

Problem solved! Ran Disk Utility not in recover mode again, and it identified that the logical size wasn't right. Repair Disk while logged in - and at the upper level "Macintosh HD" on the left sidebar - fixed the issue, and I'm going to not attempt to run Boot Camp again for a while just in case :-p

  • Serious hard disk space issue (9.2 on XP Professional, 56 GB not enough)

    Hello,
I installed Oracle 9.2.0.1.0 on HP Pavilion running Windows XP Professional (Pentium 4).
Following are the numbers about disk space:
Space before starting Installation: 56.8 GB
Universal Installer indicated Enterprise Edition needs 2.86 GB and I selected General purpose database.
Universal Installer in summary before starting installation shows:
    Space requirements as
    C:\Required 2.57 (includes 90 MB temporary): Available 56.82GB
After completion of installation: I had hard disk space available as 32.6 GB (Approximately 25 GB space was taken)
Within couple of hours hard disk space dropped to 12 GB
and some thing kept taking the hard disk space.
Where is the problem? Oracle? XP? HP?
After uninstall Oracle and deleting Oracle home space is 56.5
Am I doing some thing wrong?
Earlier I tried the same on XP home edition and within couple of hours I ran out of space on same computer after installing Oracle 9.2
    Any pointers, help greatly appreciated.

  • Re: Hard Disk Space

    Hi,
After dropping a couple of tables, the system does not free up hard disk space.
How can I resolved this issue ?
    kindly advise.
    thanks.
    andrew

My server has 19 GB disk space and 49MB free space. There are about 450 tables with live data. The size of each tables varies from 1.7GB to 10MB.
    1. Auto resize of datafiles will not decrease the space but increase the datafiles.
    2. If resize the datafiles to 100MB will prevent the data growth
    I am stuck.
What would be the recommended solution ?

  • How much hard disk space remains?

Sorry, the Missing Manuel for Lion isn't available until the end of the month, but I have a lot of basic questions.
With Snow Leopard when i opened a Finder window at the very bottom of the window pain was information on how much memmory was being used by whichever folder I had opened.  I know I can hit Tab to have a window pop up and tell me, but I liked that old feature built into the Window.  Is there a way to change the setting back so that when I open a finder window I get a reading on how much hard disk space is being used by X file?

Select Show Status Bar from the Finder's View menu. As far as space used by any one file that is listed under the Size column in the Finder when using List View.

I am running iTunes on an IBM compatible system running Windows XP with a relatively small hard disk (70gb). I have 4 kids with 4 IPOD Touches, multiple IPOD Nanos, etc. Their apps and album art are eating up the hard disk space. I changed the Media Folder through Edit, Prferences, Advances, iTunes Media Folder to an external hard disk. The new music downloads and purchases go there but the apps and other items do not. How do I get the apps and other iTunes software and downloads to go to the external hard disk

There is no built in function to make this happen.
    Your options are:
    Upgrade the existing hard drive.
Try creating a link for the app folder on the external drive... this may or may not work.
Realistically, a larger hard drive is a better solution, then use the external drive for keeping a backup of the ENTIRE iTunes folder and any other personal data on the system.

  • Why is my available hard disk space disappearing?

    Hi,
Occasionally my hard disk space will start disappearing for no apparent (to me) reason.  I'll have 15 gigs of available hard disk space that will disappear, and I'll get messages that I'm running out of disk space, interfering with what I'm doing.
After I restart my computer, it seems to reset, but I would like to stop it altogether (as, obviously, it's not always convenient to restart my computer in the middle of tasks.)
I tried Disk Utility, but it didn't find anything.  Are there any other legit programs I should use to solve this and other general issues?
Or is it something I could fix myself (with only basic computer knowledge)?
    Thanks!

  • Lost hard drive space

Hi, I just bought mac mini which is working great but I have lost a lot of hard drive space. My mini says it has 74.5 GB hard drive according to the system profiler, but after doing the transferring of information as per the Mac mini user guide using a firewire cable between my old emac and my mini now I only have 12.3 GB left on my hard drive.
I know I had about 22 GB of info on my emac, so does that mean the the mini comes with over 40 GB’s of stuff on it from the factory? I think maybe I messed up some place. I know I now have two administrators on the mini. One is the new one I set up, the other is the old one that was transferred from the emac.
I must have duplicated something, but if anybody has any ideas on how to gain back some lost hard drive space I love to hear form you.
    Thanks, Brad
Ps. I tried to post last night but today when I went to find it nothing came up. I hope I'm not double posting.

Thanks Ian, I did what you suggested and down loaded "whatsize" then ran the program. What it found was that in the Library>Logs>Console>502file there was a strange log in file that and 25GB's of ishock controller logons.
I guess what happened is that when I transferred the info from my emac the ishock controller app. and driver was also transferred but the mac mini didn't like that. Every time I started up the computer it would cause the ishock to logon which took up a bunch of hard drive space. So I just deleted the file restarted and like magic I gained back 25 GB's
    Thanks for your help!
    Brad

  • What hard disk space required

Hello .I am a novice to Solaris .
I had posted a question earlier but got no reply.
1.I just want to know how much hard disk space is needed for installing the Solaris 8 OS (IA) . I have a 7.5 GB hard disk and I want to know if this will suffice.
2.If I get a 40GB hard disk , can I install both Windows XP and Solaris 8 on it on 2 different partitions ?
    Please help;
    Thanks

It requires 1.4 gig technically, but rarely uses over 750meg. You will have plenty of space. You should be able to load both os's on the 7 gig, adding another small drive in later as excess storage space for either OS.

  • Scratch Disk Problems - Too much hard disk space?

Now, here's a question for scratch disk problems. My photoshop (7) used to work (on my old computer), now I've re-installed it and it says it and windows are paging to the same location, and I can't open it because "Scratch disks are full." I know there are lots of questions like this, but this one is special. I believe the problem is I have 1.5 TB of hard disk space, which apparently is too much and causes problems (?). Anyway, I would change the scratch disk location but I can't open photoshop in order to do so. Any suggestions?
Basically, is there a way for me to change scratch disk locations if Photoshop won't even open?
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Changing the location won't do anything nor will resetting the prefs (sorry Manish-Sharma). You really need to physically downsize the partition to be below or around the 500GB ceiling. It's unavoidable as this is inherent in the old file I/O API that those programs use. Changing the scratch disk location would do nothing as long as the program partition is stil lthat large and throws the program through a loop. open your drivemanagemnt by using My Computer --> Right-click --> Manage --> Disk Management and split the partition or whatever.
