Refurb 13inch 2012 OR Refurb 15inch 2011 which is better? Is refurb really worth it?THOUGHTS ON REFURBISHED MBP

hey folks i am planing to buy a macbook pro after saving cash since the past 6years i want you all to help me with which product i should go for
i am 17 and need a good laptop which will last me another 5years..... i have been thinking about a refurb macbook pro 2012 13inch 2.9 i7dual core which is for about 1260 and another one refurb macbook pro 2011 15inch 2.2  i7 quad core which is again for 1350.....i would want to know which is a better option as price wise both are very close and if is the 15inch worth it and better as the 2011 does not have the usb3.0 and bluetooth 4.0 and its sandy bridge but again its quad core where as the 13inch 2012 has all the stuff but its dual core.... what is the difference between quad and dual core?....and i would want to know your thoughts on the refurb models as i said its importamt for me to spend my money wisely since i have been saving for the past 6years....does the refurb mbp as good as new?can they have cosmetic damages?is the outter shell and body replaced?and do they come with new parts and accesories? and is it like a second hand laptop which is used for a year or few months and then returnded and sold again as refurb? please let me know which is better and long lasting or else shall i go for a new one...cause if i buy a refurb mbp and the apple protection care plan the total cost is as much as a new mbp so is it better to buy a new mbp and not buy the apple protection  plan? PLEASE HELP ME OUT
Thanks for your time

ps: is a 128gb solid state drive worth replacing the 500gb or 750gb serial ata

USB 3 vs USB 2 -> the importance of USB 3 depends on how much you use an external drive to read/write large files or large numbers of files. I once did extensive testing with USB 2 vs FireWire 400 & 800 with TimeMachine. It was no surprise that performing a complete backup with FireWire was significantly faster than with USB (or even a large backup such as after installing an OS update). But for those hourly (or even daily) backups the difference wasn't all that significant. Exporting a large number of photos or an iMovie to FireWire was significantly faster. Copying a copy word processor files it was almost impossible to accurate time the difference. For some the USB3 ports are a big deal. For me, not at all because I'm heavily invested in FireWire drives.
BlueTooth 4? Frankly, I can't say because the only thing I use BT for is my keyboard and mouse which the older standard is fine for. There are potential advantages - just as with USB3 - the question is whether your current/future needs align to the new standards. Again for me they don't.
As for the CPU difference - I've already indicated that unless you are doing high processor intensive work (such as 3D modelling or big statistical modeling) either processor has plenty of power. According to the benchmarks my new work iMac runs rings around my work 2009 Core 2 Duo 13" MBP. In my real world use of those two computers I never notice the difference. If I played 3D games on them I would.
I've already said that all but one of my refurbs looked new and from what I've seen of relatives and friends buying refurbs that runs pretty true. You aren't buying a new computer but on the other hand I've never seen a refurb that looked beat up. Most refurbs are computers that buyers returned within Apple's 14 day buyer's remorse period or were dead on arrival, a new one given to the buyer, and repaired.
I can't tell you how long a refurb MBP will last - no more than I can tell you how long a new MBP will last. But Apple warrants them for a year and lets you buy an extended warranty just as if they were new. That indicates the confidence Apple has in its refurbs.
Where do you get the idea that you can only put a 128GB SSD in a 13"? It can handle any standard 2.5" drive and there are plenty of SSDs in that form factor at 256GB and above. Yes an SSD is expensive compared to a standard drive but the speed increase is amazing and not just in booting up the computer. Installing an SSD on my 4.5 year old iMac gave it another year of live. Installing one in my work MBP was like getting a new computer. I wouldn't consider buying a new computer without one.

  • Early 2013 vs. Late 2013 Retina MacBook Pro - which is better? Refurb or New?

Hi, I'm looking to get myself a new (or refurbished) MacBook Pro Retina.
And wondering which one to get (i.e. from the list below).
Brand New (Late-2013) - $2450 (after corporate discount):
    CPU 2.3 Ghz (Haswell)
    16GB RAM
    512 GB SSD
    Refurbished (Late-2013) - $2250:
    CPU 2.3 Ghz (Haswell)
    16GB RAM
    512GB SSD
    Refurbished (Early-2013) - $2200:
    CPU 2.7Ghz (Ivy Bridge)
    16GB RAM
    512GB SSD
While it might be an obvious choice for some ppl - I'm a bit puzzled. Early-2013 can be with LG screen (which seems to have a lot of complains about).
Will Older-2.7Ghz vs. Newer-2.3Ghz be noticeable for an average user (not a Pro editor etc.)?
What is more important for average and normal (but multi-tasking) performance - is it CPU or RAM or SSD?
And does it make sense to pay $200 more for New vs. Refurbished?
    Thanks in advance.

    Comparing Late-2013 15” rMBPs.
The 2.6 GHz model is 17% faster on GeekBench 2 benchmarks and has more RAM and so will run faster, but will this percentage be noticeable?
The extra RAM will matter if and when you run enough programs so they do not all fit in memory.  For light duty processing that should happen rarely in 8 GB. Even if you run a memory-hungry program like PhotoShop, the extra RAM does not make much of a difference.  https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5659174?tstart=30  There are larger-memory programs where it would matter but those are not in the mix you have mentioned.
Again the GPU speeds will differ:
2.0 GHz model: Intel Iris Pro 5200 (2.0 GHz)
2.6 GHz model: NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M and Intel Iris Pro 5200
For graphics intensive applications the rendering speed differences will be noticeable.
On the applications you mentioned it willl be hard to tell the difference in speed on these two models.  Thus you might as well get the one with the larger SSD.  If you were to include graphics rendering programs then the 2.6 GHz model speed would be faster, but those are not in the mix of programs you mentioned.

Your description suggests that your MBP had a kernel panic:

If so, follow these directions and post the report for inspection:

  • Which is better??????

which is better?Dam really confused which speaker to buy??
i currently have a creative m2600.but am not getting enough performance or that feel while watching movies like avatar, step up 3 etc......so am planning to buy a 5.1.......not planning but i have decided to buy a 5.1....so..
which is better? the 6160 or 6060 or 6100.
which of these will provide me relly great exprience while playing games and most importantly while whatching hd movies and while listening to music.......
and other than this what i have to ask is...what is this "db" in speakers. i mean while looking at a speaker specs we can see it..like 65db,85db,75db..etc........
and when i compared specs of the three speakers i mentioned above i saw that the 6160 has low "db"........why is that?

The specs is just a guide, you won't be able to tell the slight difference in db using just your ears. Besides, it is just a comparison between the level of a music to the level of background noise, it does not necessary mean which speaker sounds better. If possible, please make a trip to your local electronics store and try out the speakers system yourself.

  • 2012 Macbook Pro 13in 2.9GHz vs 2011 October 15in quad core refurb

This fall I will be a freshman at my college and I have decided that I am going to invest in a macbook pro. Right now I could buy 2012 13in with 8gb of ram for $1399 or I could purchase the refurb for $1359. My question is which one will benefit me more in the long run? Is 15in to bulky and heavy to take to college? If i chose the refurb would I be able to count on it for years to come? Will it last longer than the 2012 13in. If I got the 15in I would probably upgrade to 8gb of ram. I would be missing out on USB 3.0 if I chose the refurb though. Is this a deal breaker? I'm planning on getting into Economics and my college pretty much endorses Macs so that won't be a problem. Otherwise, I will probably just be doing normal things on my computer like watching videos, surfing the web, typing papers, downloading music and the occasional playing of flash games on the internet. I just want to make sure that I can get a computer that will last me at least 4 years and hopefully more. Any suggestions and thoughts would be very helpful!

I would go a different route.....
I would buy the the 15' Quad Core.
Regardless of which one you decide to purchase, they would last for years if proper care is used.
The 2.9GHz is a fast machine.  No doubt about that one.  It is however, in the end, only a dual core.
Let say you decide to do some number crunching, the dual core will run out of steam before the quad core does.
Or you decide to use photoshop, the dual core will do the job but the quad will do it efficiently because of it's quad core design, the processing is done by all four cores thus finishing faster.
And when it comes with your occasional games, the 15' has it's own discreet graphics to process the videos while the 13' has to rely on the processor to drive the built in intel video.  So the processor will be working harder on the 13' which will make your MB run a little on the hot side.

  • Deploy Java Updates using SCCM 2012 SP1 and SCUP 2011

What is the best way to deploy Java updates using sccm 2012 SP1 and SCUP 2011?

    I didn´t find Kent´s blog useful when talking about Java. I can deploy Adobe products fine, but I have to import Java manually because not having Shavlik certificate. So with that said, I have the fallowing problem;
I have full offline installer unpacked, .msi file and Data1.cab. When I´m importing these binaries to SCUP, I only can point to .msi. Doing that, installation fails in client side fails because of lack of data1.cab fine, which is the main file.
Should I use some other downloaded files of Java? I couldn´t find any Java-update-file only type of files to download.

  • Joining Windows 2012 Server to SBS 2011 Domain

    Hi All,
I have been trying to get a new Windows 2012 Server to join a SBS 2011 domain. The error message I am getting is:
The following error occurred attempting to join the domain: xxxx. The specified domain does not exist or could not be contacted.
I have a bunch of other Windows 7/XP workstations that have joined successfully. I have also tried disabling TCP/IP v6 on the 2012 server and joining the domain with the netdom command. The SBS 2011 server is listed as the primary DNS server on the 2012
    server.
What else can I try here?
    Thanks,

I am having the same issue has the OP. I have my DNS settings pointing to the sbs server that hosts the domain and DNS. I am receiving the same error.

My itunes library was on my PC.  About two years ago I switched it to my Seagate server/hardrive. (itunes-preferences-advanced-change library). Last summer (2012) I bought a macbook, which seems to access the seagate server hard drive fine for word docs, excel spreadsheets, etc. It also seems to have started its own library which is not complete. My PC died this summer (I still have it though).
Now when syncing any of the multiple devices (ipods, ipads, iphones) that we have with my mac book, itunes states that "an error occurred" or the "app cannot be found".  Itunes wants me to erase the device and sync with my macbook. The message "The iPhone “Renee’s iPhone” is synced with another iTunes library on “Renee PC”. Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync with this iTunes library? An iPhone can be synced with only one iTunes library at a time. Erasing and syncing replaces the contents of this iPhone with the contents of this iTunes library."appears.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

i m havind 15inch 2011 late macbook pro lap i7 processor 8gb ram 1tb hdd can i use avid media composer and final cut pro in this specifications?

Can't speak about avid, since I am not familiar with the software.
You can certainly use FCP X on that machine. It should work better if you use a fast external drive for your media and projects.
There is a free trial, so try it out and see how it goes. You should also follow some good video tutorials, if you are not familiar with the application. FCP X is a lot different from Avid, Premiere or even Final Cut Pro 7.

Running Captivate 8 on a Macbook and I am unable to import Powerpoint 2011 (which is up to date) files or slides.  I get an error saying that either the file is damaged or I am using an older version of PP....which is not the case.  I tried creating a very simple PP file with just a few words on one slide...ran a compatibility check and all was good.  Still could not import that simple slide into Captivate.

OK...found out it did not like me saving as a *.pptx.  When I save it as a *.ppt file it imported in correctly.  Is this what I will need to do moving forward?  I am not sure if I am losing any functionality in the process...

I'm unable to open vCard exported from MS Outlook for Mac (2011) which adheres all requirements.

vCards exported from Outlook are not compatible with iCloud if that's what you're trying to import it to.  You'll have to do something like create a Gmail account, then export your Outlook contacts to Gmail (see http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook-help/export-outlook-contacts-to-google -gmail-HA001148902.aspx), then export the contacts from Gmail as a vCard (see https://support.google.com/mail/answer/24911?hl=en) and import it to iCloud (see http://support.apple.com/kb/PH3605).

iMac use ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB and MacBook Air use intel graphic 5000m so which is better?

  • Is it better for your battery if you let it run down all the way and then charge it? Or to charge it whenever you have the opportunity?  Which is better for the life of the battery?

I was wondering it the life of the battery would last longer if you let the battery run down all the way and then charge it? Or to charge it whenever you have the opportunity even if it doesn't have a low battery?  Which is better for the life of the battery and prolong the life of the battery?

I've had a iPhone 4s since March 2012, and it's battery is pretty useless now.  I was using the app Battery Doctor (Battery Saver, Battery Life) by Beijing Kingsoft Internet Security software, which encourages the user to charge more often, whenever battery life drops below 100% full and greater than 20% full, and gives ratings according to the number of full, partial & overcharges done, but I'm concerned that charging like that actually results in worse battery life??
I now have an new iPhone 5 and don't want the battery to only last as short as the last one did
    Any advice/comments please

  • Requirements: Which is better ?

Hi. I'm about to buy a laptop and I am wondering which of these is better.
Photoshop will be used only for high res high dpi drawing(no photo editting) on an external monitor.
Will there be any difference in performance between GeForce 540M and 525M, both with 1GB DDR3?
Will there be any difference in performance between Intel Core i7-2630QM (2.00/2.90GHz 6 MB Cache) and Intel Core i5-2410M (2.3/2.9GHz, 3MB Cache)? Will Photoshop take advantage of the four cores with lower frequency or two cores with higher frequency is better?
Which is better to invest in - GPU or CPU, considering the fact that the laptop will be used with external monitor for drawing(no photo editting) ?

If you were going to go with a desktop I would refere you to this article of mine:
    http://robertoblake.com/blog/2011/07/building-a-photoshop-cs5-computer/
I'm working on a laptop equivalent for this. CS5 can do without the Quad Core processors if you go dual core at 3.0GHz or better. I found an Acer laptop for $449 with 4GB DDR3 AMD Phenom II Dual Core N660 3.0GHz, 320 GB 5400RPM, DVD Super Multi, ATI Raedeon HD 4250 (OpenGL), L2 Cache is 2MB
and its upgradable to upto 8GB.
If you're skeptical I've worked on the go on a rig a little less powerful than this and I've been able to do 27x41 Movie Posters without a problem! You can't beat that price for the power.
