Refurb C2D Mini occasionally gets into startup chime loop

I'm supporting a pre-2009 1.83GHz Core2Duo Apple refurb Mini that about once a week goes into a continuous loop thusly:
Press power button, Mini gets to startup chime, then it waits a few seconds and does the startup chime again. It repeats this ad infinitum and never gets past the startup chiming. Only way to stop this is to force a power off. At that point, it will generally startup OK.
There are no diagnostic beeps or flashes on front light. Hard Drive passes all DiskUtility tests. And the Mini works fine except when this startup problem occurs. The Mini is connected to a good UPS, so I'm ruling out bad mains power as the source of the problem.
Problem is so sporadic, that I'm concerned that my local independent Apple dealer won't be able to diagnose it. This dealer also has a reputation for keeping Macs for a month or so while it waits for parts. So my preference would be to deal with AppleCare directly over the phone and via mail-in. The Mini is within the one-year warranty period, but outside the 90-days of free phone support. I'm willing to buy AppleCare to expedite the solution of this problem. But even then, I'm worried that the problem is flakey enough that Apple is going to pass on it. I'm not within reasonable range of a real Apple Store, so all interaction with Apple will have to be over the phone and via delivery services.
What are the chances that Apple would know that this Mini was returned and refurbed for having precisely this issue with its original owner?
I'm open to advice. Thanks.

Update.
This has happened two more times, including just now.
If the Mini is forced off by holding down the power button, it then is able to be started normally after just a pro-forma 1 minute wait.
The startup chime is about half the duration of a normal startup chime. And there is about 2 seconds between each chime during the looping.
As an additional update, I found out by talking to AppleCare that mail-in service is not available for Minis, like it is for Apple notebooks. So purchasing AppleCare would not relieve me of having to deal with my local Apple authorized service provider -- who is not likely to have the patience to experience this sporadic problem.

  • How Do I Get My Startup Chime Back?

I have the opposite of what most posters on this subject say. I can't turn the chime back on again.
Like many others, I did not want the chime to disturb meetings and such. So one day I held the mute button down while pressing the startup button on my PowerBook. It worked to get rid of the chime (the PB started up in silence). The system volume remains adjustable and otherwise works normally.
But after trying several combinations of buttons on startup, I can't restore the chime.
I'd rather not turn to third party preference panels, but I will if I have to.
    Any thoughts?

    Hi Richard
    This is the Apple answer
Mac OS X 10.4: Startup chime doesn't play on startup
If you wake your Mac from sleep, then shut it down or restart it before playing any audio or adjusting the volume, you won't hear the startup chime on your next startup.
Don't worry. There's nothing wrong with your Mac; it will start up normally. To ensure that the startup chime sounds on startup, simply play an audio file or adjust the system volume after waking your Mac from sleep before restarting it or shutting it down.

  • MacBook Air (mid-2011) stuck in startup chime loop

Everything was working fine last night, but this morning all I get is a gray screen (no Apple logo) and the repeating Startup Chime. Help?
I tried booting with Shift key help down, tried Command Option P+R, etc. Nada. Only recent problem I have had is that occasionaly it seems to Shut Down when Sleeping and I am forced to hold down Power Button to get it to Boot, or I receive the Error Message that it Shut Down Unexpectedly.

You hav to take the computer to the Apple store and have it checked out.
Resetting SMC will not help in this case.

  • Alter a BAPI Result Table, how to get into the display "loop" ?

    Hello all,
i have a problem regarding the result rows of a RFC/BAPI Call.
There are three views, let's say 1,2,3. In View 1, i call a BAPI, and display the results in a table in View 2. I added a button in each row, which calls View 3 and displays some details concerning the selected row.
I now want to store a flag for each row, that has been displayed in this way.
In View 3 i store the key value of the displayed row in an own value node in the context.
When i go back from View 3 to View 2, i want to see that flag (in an extra column) in every row, that has been selected in this session.
So i do not know, how to alter a single row in the BAPI result table, how to get into the "loop" that is used by WD to display the table.
already tried a supply function, but i was not able to alter single rows.
Any suggestions/tips or perhaps code fragments of working supply functions ?
    Thank you !

    Hello,
I'm not sure whether I understood your problem correctly, but I will try to give an answer.
The easiest way I see is to copy the RFC Results to a Component Controller Context structure with an additional Flag field. You can use WDCopyService for copying.
Then on the event of selecting you set your flag as appropriate for you (e.g. if you want to use an image as flag you set the Image path) on the current element of your table. Then display View 3.
On going back View 2 should show now the new flag values...
The trick is to copy the values (as at Time structures can not be expandend with new fields) and set the Flag on the onSelect event.
    Hope this helps,
    Frank

  • Mac mini occasionally boots in startup volume screen (SOLVED).

Here is my original message from March 08:
"I've had this problem since I've had my Mac mini (about a year now). Sometimes the startup volume screen appears despite not having any other Hard Drives connected apart from the boot drive (which is the internal Hard drive) and despite not pressing any keyboard keys on startup.
I am using 10.5.2 with the latest mini firmware and am unable to think what could be causing this? I have selected my main hard-drive in the startup disk preferences and have no permissions/hard drive problems (so says disk utility) but the problem persists. It's a minor annoyance but one I would welcome any help with."
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1433640&tstart=0
Because the original post is archived I thought I would post the answer in a new thread. The answer to this problem was to replace the network cable connecting my Mac mini to my Apple router.
I think the previous faulty cable was causing the mini to do a phantom network boot and that's why the startup volume screen came up from time to time.
Since, the cable change no more startup volume screen problem.
Phew, this has been bugging me ever since I bought my mini. It's nice to know sometimes it's the simple answers that work

I have a similar problem. Whenever I startup my Mac Mini, an icon of the "Macintosh HD" appears in the middle of the screen. It doesn't go away until I click on it. After that, every thing works fine... until I use Safari. If I use Safari long enough, some type of glitch occurs that doesn't let me type correctly; Safari will stop working as it should be, and every time i try to type, some really weird symbols appear, like these ones: ßêÄ©¶¢. The only option I have left is to restart the computer, over, and over, and over again. Please help!!!!

  • Pismo G4 550 - no startup chime after 10.4.6

Since installing 10.4.6 I've had trouble with my start-up chime not working. I have isolated the problem down to the IOAudioFamily.kext file. When I take it out of extension and boot into Classic then back into Tiger I get a chime and it stays on even if I reboot into tiger. If I replace IOAudioFamily.kext to the extensions folder I get a chime on the next boot but after that my reboots are silent. The audio function works well after the boot-up is complete only if I have IOAudioFamily.kext installed. So, I either have a start-up chime and no sound or I have no chime and normal sound. Also, when I run profiler either way I get "There was an error while gathering this information." under the Audio (built in) tab. I've tried taking the IOAudioFamily.kext off the TIger install dvd and using it instead but I get the same problem as before. There must be some sub-extension or something that was changed to cause this. Does anyone have any suggestions besides live with it?
I've tried the PRAM reset thing and its doesn't work.
    Thanks

    When
booted in 10.4.6, do you always get the startup chime
through a restart? If so, then the difference lies
with the cold start versus the restart and there are
    a few differences.
I lose the chime whenever I boot into Tiger and let it run to the log-in page. When I safe boot the chime is preserved but the os doesn't recognize my built in speakers and the volume control disappears. If I boot into OS 9 the chime is still gone until I shut down and power up or reboot, then the chime is back. So, my thinking is that there is a kernel extension that enables Tiger to see my IO card (built in speakers and headphone jack) and it must turn off the speakers from the system somehow. The OS 9 startup must unhook the IO card from the driver and therefore allows it to chime when no driver is present.
A cold start runs the POST (power-on self-test); when
powered on, the Start Manager, contained in ROM,
makes sure that certain hardware components on the
computer's logic board are working, like the
microprocessor, ROM, drives, ports, expansion slots,
and RAM. When you hear the startup chime, the Start
Manager has successfully completed its test.
Open your System Profiler > Hardware > Diagnostics
and see what the last POST reports.
OK, this is weird. When I go to profiler and look up Diagnostics it says "No information found" but you say that post should give some sort of account.
On my iMac G5 it says:
    "Power On Self-Test:
    Last Run: 6/12/06 8:17 AM
    Result: Passed"
I think that means the boot ROM on the pismo (boot rom version 4.1.8f5) isn't talking to the system profiler log.
Just another tidbit: Audio (built in) says "There was an error while gathering this information"
    No error code.
This smacks of a firmware issue. Do you think there is a firmware update that would fix it?
I don't know what else you can do. If it is in fact
strictly a software problem (which I cannot explain
since software does not begin to load until after the
startup chime), I would not be concerned. The other
test you could perform is removing the added
RAM...maybe OSX has a small problem with the new
    memory module.

  • G4 (Digital Audio) has no startup chime and memory problems

Our trusty old G4 has worked perfectly for over five years in spite of swallowing all sorts of upgrades. It was working fine on Saturday, but I noticed that System Profiler > Memory indicated that DIMM2 was bad, so I removed it and restarted. System Profiler then indicated that DIMM1 was bad. I thought this was unlikely, but I pulled it and also decided to replace the 5+ year old battery.
When I tried to restart, there was no chime and it only got as far as lighting up the logic board and running the fans. I then spent the rest of the day going through the whole litany of resetting PMU, CUDA, etc to no avail and then replaceing the upgrades with the original parts. When I got to the optical card the computer started up with no chime and ran everything normally. System Profiler then reported one DIMM as being PC100, even though it reported it as OK and included it when reporting the total amount of memory. It had been identified as PC133 before the startup problem happened.
I took the DIMM to my local repair shop and it checked out as a PC133 and passed all tests. The present situation is that the computer starts up with no chime and has passed all TechTool Pro tests and DiskWarrior says the directory is fine. Does the memory misidentification indicate a problem? How do I get my startup chime back?

  • Mac Mini won't boot, distorted startup chime, gray screen

    Hi all --
I've seen similar posts (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12170891&#12170891) but thought I'd start a new one, mainly because I haven't heard anyone mention the startup chime.
I woke up my 2007 stock Mac Mini Friday morning and the cursor was frozen. Unplugged and replugged the mouse to no avail. Couldn't force quit, so I had to power down. Restarted with a badly distored startup chime (not "speaker breakup" from excessive volume, just distortion, and some "stuttering") and a gray screen that didn't go away. Restarted many, many times. Inserted Snow Leopard DVD to run Disc Utility but it wasn't recognized -- just a gray screen. Tried resetting the PMU and SMC with no results. Tried booting into single-user mode (with a wired USB keyboard) to eject the DVD, but no luck. Tried open firmware, but nothing. Once in an while I would get the Apple icon and a spinning progress bar that never went away.
Took it to the Genius Bar, where they tried to boot from a Firewire drive, with no success. The best they could do was tell me my 17-month old Mac was out of warranty. That confirmed, I took it home, cracked it open and removed the Snow Leopard DVD (with a credit card) to insert the install disc it shipped with. That didn't work. A couple of times it looked like it would, but then after the spinning bar I got the multilingual system bomb message. Tried to run Hardware Test, but nothing. Put in original Disc 2... and that gave me a flashing folder! Progress! Forced the DVD out and slipped in Disc 1. That started to read, and then I got some kernel-panic looking text and a shutdown. My last attempt was to create a USB boot drive from the original install discs, but my old Sawtooth won't let me run the installer.
Is there any hope at this point? I just bought the thing last May, so I've had it less than a year and a half. The distorted startup chime makes me think the logic board is fried and no amount of fooling with the startup drive will make a difference. The only thing out of the ordinary in this case was that it went to sleep last Thursday night with a DV camera hooked up via Firewire.
I'm not thrilled about giving Apple any more money for another Mini, but I'm heavily invested in Logic Studio so I don't have much of a choice of platform.
I'm pretty sure I'm doomed, but I thought I'd post anyway. A quick internet search shows I'm not the only one with the gray screen of death on a fairly new Mini. Thanks in advance for any pointers.

    Thanks.
The Genius was able to get to the Apple logo and spinning... thing (what used to be the beachball). His theory was that as long as the Snow Leopard disc was in there, the boot process would never get to the Firewire port. Once I got home I literally pried the Snow Leopard disc out and put in the original install disc. But any progress whatsoever ends in the system bomb message.
Thing is, I had tried to eject the disc by booting with the mouse button down. But on restarting, the laser in the optical mouse flashes quickly, once. I don't think the USB ports are going "live" at all... so I can't get into single user mode, safe mode, hardware test, anything. The Genius' keyboard was no help in that regard. So yeah, I suspect a hardware problem.
A search of "gray screen of death" shows this happening to a lot of models.

  • Mac Mini won't boot, repeating startup chime

This afternoon I noticed that my Mac Mini (1.5 GHz Intel Core Solo) was acting sluggish. I opened up activity monitor and saw that the process 0 (kernel_task ?) was using about 50% of the CPU. Assuming that it was in the middle of something, I left it alone for another 10 minutes. Still 50% red in the CPU Usage graph in Activity Monitor. I then turned the computer off. When I turn it back on, I get a gray screen, one normal startup chime, followed by somewhat quieter startup chimes about 1 -2 seconds apart. I've tried resetting the PMU, starting up with no USB connections, safe mode, by CD, etc. I don't think the keyboard is even recognized. I know that works, because I tested it on my laptop.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

OK, well it would not make any difference that the install disk was already inserted - as long as the Option key was being held down at the right moment, the system would go into the boot loader screen even if there were no bootable volumes.
Make sure the Option key is down immediately you hear the first chime. If you've been doing that, it would be an indication of a more serious fault.
Try an SMC reset to make sure the system hasn't just corrupted the management controller, then try again.
An SMC reset can be accomplished as follows:
-From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
-Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
    -Wait at least 15 seconds.
-Plug the power cord back in, making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time.
-Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
-Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.
If that doesn't work, there's a hardware fault. In which case the nature and pattern of sounds you hear after the initial chime may be the clue, since these may be the system giving an audible report from the power-on self test. Are these regularly repeating beeps? rather than chimes? If so, you should hear a pattern of 1, 2 3 or 4 of them followed by a second pause, then repeating.

  • Key combination to get into Safe Mode on startup

My PowerBook froze up early this morning while I was working on a project. I went to restart it and it now starts up to a grey screen with a spinning gear. I do not have time to wait for AppleCare to come online today since the project is due later on today and I need to finish the it. I talked to AppleCare previously about this issue and they walked me through it, but I do not remember how, as it was about six months ago. The KnowledgeBase on Apple's website only works for Mac OS 10.3.9 and earlier, I am running 10.4.5 or 10.4.6. My question is, How can I get into Safe Mode on startup?

Uhh... (command + s) boots into single-user mode on startup.
To get into safe mode, hold down "Shift" after you turn the computer on and hear the startup chime. Don't let go till you see the spinning gear.

Data rate DOES make a difference, but I'd say your real problem has more to do with the fact that you're working on a Powerbook. Motion's real time capabilities derive from the capability of the video card. Not the processor. Some cards do better than others, but laptops are not even recommended for running Motion.
To improve your workflow on a laptop will be limited, but there are a few things that you can try.
Make sure that thumbnails and previews are turned off.
Make sure that you are operating in Draft Mode.
Lower the display resolution to half, or quarter.
Don't expect to be getting real time playback. Treat it more like After Effects.
Compressing your clips into smaller Animations does help because it lowers the data rate, but you're still dealing with the animation codec which is a high data rate codec. Unfortunately, it sounds necessary in your case because you're dealing with alpha channels.
The data rate comes into play with your setup trying to play through your USB drive. USB drives are never recommended for editing or Motion work. Their throughput is not consistent enough for video work. a small FW drive would be better, though your real problem as I said is the Powerbook.
If you must work on the powerbook, then don't expect real-time playback. Instead, build your animation, step through it, and do RAM previews to view sections in real time.
    I hope this helps.

Have you tried opening another song from Finder? Tried opening your song on another computer? Maybe it is just this one session that has corrupted?

  • IMac G5 running OS 10.4.11. Started playing with a bluetooth speaker (may or may not be related). Now I cannot get past the blue screen on startup. I can get into safe mode. Tried install disc for disc utility and reloaded OS. Still get blue screen.

I have an older iMac G5 running OS 10.4.11. The other day I started playing with a bluetooth speaker (may or may not be related). Now I cannot get past the blue screen on startup.
I can get into safe mode. But no regular startup.
I tried disabling bluetooth, thinking that might be related. It didn't help.
I even tried using the install disc to run disc utility. That didn't work so I reloaded the OS.
But I still get hung on the blue screen when trying a normal startup.
    All help would be appreciated.

Try resetting the PMU/SMU and PRAM/NVRAM. You'd need to identify the mode of resetting depending on the model of your G5 iMac. The Apple support sites that would help you for this are –

I hope this solves your problem.
