Refurbished MacBook, IN DESPERATE NEED OF HELP!!

The past couple of weeks I've been keeping a close eye on the refurbished white Macbook that was released early 2010, I am so disapointed, as I went back to the apple online store yesterday night to order and it was OUT OF STOCK!!! I've decided that the MacBook air is a 'no go' and my only other option at the moment would be the MacBook Pro which is about $100 more, which I guess isn't all that bad because they are top of the range. But anyway, I would really like to know how often apple stocks new refurb laptops and whether it will take a long time (its a christmas gift, and I'd like to order one a little earlier just to be safe!) Thanks for all your help!
PS - It would also be great to get some feedback about which macbook is best!

No one here works for Apple.  We are just users like you and have no more of an idea as to when they restock refurbished product then you do.

Best in what way?  Tell us about how you plan to use you mac ( web surfing, word processing, or video/photo editing) and we can give you an idea.

    You are describing a kernel panic and you should not be seeing them frequently. Just as an example of typical usage: I use my MacBook about 6 hours a day every day and in the 9 weeks that I've owned this one I have seen no kernel panics at all. Kernel panics can be hardware related but can also be caused by operating system problems.
    Before you progress any further, the first thing you'll want to do is back up your data. Whether you attempt to fix the problem yourself, or let Apple handle it, your drive is going to be wiped. (And if you've installed a RAM upgrade it would be a good idea to remove it because that could be the cause of the panics.)
    If you call AppleCare you're likely to be told to wipe the drive and use the install DVD to return the computer to factory specs. If you have a local AppleStore your genius will (probably) do that for you. If removing the RAM, unplugging all your peripherals, and reinstalling the OS doesn't solve the problem then you'll know your problem is with the computer itself.

    Hello everyone, I got this White MacBook Mac OS X 10.4.11 yesturday I was updating limewire and iTunes, I was downloading some songs from Limewire when all of a sudden my macbook frozed. I was not able to do a thing. Not even minimizing nor quiting the app nor even opening another aplication, so I decided to shut it down by holding the power button until it shut down (about 8 secs). So I restart my macbook and I got this grey=blank screen whit a flashing question mark on it. I've tried EVERYTHING on this link http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1440?viewlocale=en_US even these one http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1533 and all I was able to accomplish, was to hold the mouse (/trackpad) button to eject a Cd, and while pressing Shift during startup (in order to start in Safe Boot mode) all I get is this lock image and this space to type a password. I've tried typing every password I know and I can't fix my macbook. Can anyone please help me out on this one?

    It means certain system files needed for startup are corrupted. You will have to reinstall OS X. If your hard drive is unaffected you can try the following:
    How to Perform an Archive and Install
    An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
    Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
    Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

    Although vlc mentioned above is a much more powerful and better player you could try installing Perian if you insist on using the quicktime player.  It may supply the codec it needs.
    Not sure why you wouldn't be able to play straight avi files though in quicktime.

    Well Java is not broken.
    The Java program you are running is broken.
    But we don't know what it is doing and where it is broken. Only the people with the source for the program (puzzlepirates) can help you.
    It is not my fault if they won't help you or told you Java is broken.

    something else is wrong on my computerAs a wild guess there is something wrong with the DNS on your machine or proxy or something like that. This is a guess based on the UnknownHostException. But again that is only a guess and the best guess one can make based on the information present.
    The problem I think is that their applet tries to do something but doesn't account for connections like yours and is blowing up because of that.
    Again only a guess and in the end really does nothing to solve your problem. If you want to solve this problem email the stack trace and perhaps my comments in this post about the UnknownHostException to puzzlepirates and ask them for help.
    Nobody else can help you but them.

  • In desperate need of help!! I feel like i'm using ...

    Hi, our broadband at home is stupidly slow.  Especially the wireless.  It feels like im running dial up from ten years ago.
    The problem has been ongoing for a long time, but i've only just returned home from uni, hence why it has taken me so long to ask for help.
    After reading on the forums about the shoddy service the india call centre gives, i decided it would be best to try the forums first.
    The internet is consistently slow, and it also seems to reach speeds of 0 kb/s at times, sometimes disconnecting me, other times not.

    Your line stats look great, your sync speed is good, and your IP profile is correct.
    Your download speed is poor.
    This could be :
    1) Hot Virtual Path at the exchange - basically your exchange has run out of bandwidth.  Do you get similar poor download speeds at all times of day and night?  If you get much faster speeds in the early morning or during the daytime, then you need the help of the forum moderators.
    2) Your WiFi connection is not working properly.  Do you get similar poor download speeds when connected to the HomeHub via an ethernet cable?  It is worth trying if you haven't done so.
    3) Are you totally sure you don't have any other devices connected to your WiFi connection dragging down your bandwidth?  Go the the "Home Network" tab in the HomeHub admin screens and see what is connected
    4) Are you signed up with BT FON?  I wonder if other people are connecting to your hub and sucking up your bandwidth? (this can cost 0.5 Mbps)  Are you living in / near a very public area?

    Hello, I have a MacBook and I have downloaded the new upgrade and it had to restart my mac and when it did it came back on and asked me for a password for a Apple ID I had created but forgot the password so I clicked 'forgot password' and for an hour now it has been loading and it will not let me on the internet or click on anything thing else. The only thing I can do is switch my laptop of and when it come back on it's still loading or I can press F3 and that is it. Please can you help me get back onto my mac as I have work I need to do.   • In Desperate Need of Help!

    Ok I have a MacBook Pro 10.4.11, 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
    I had an old trial of iWork'06 but never used it. Until recently a friend of mine encouraged me to get the newer iWork'09, since I was just using Microsoft Office for Mac.
    I bought iWork'09 and inserted the CD to install. Pacifist then opened the package and I clicked 'install'. However while it was extracting the files a window popped up and says:
    "Error
    The checksum for the file 'MobileMe' is incorrect. The file may not have been extracted properly or may be damaged. Please take caution in using this file."
    I then clicked 'continue', ignoring what this message meant. It continued to extract everything however when I click on one of the applications, either Pages, etc. It then says:
    "Files that iWork needs are missing"
    It then tells me to try and re-install to regain these missing files. I've tried to re-install multiple times and the same things happen. I did see, however, in a forums question that people responded that they should try downloading the trial version and then just entering the CD key they received with the purchase.
    I tried this and the same things are happening...
    I am replacing files on top of each other each time I've tried to re-install iWork '09. Should I completely wipe out all iWork programs and then re-insert my installer cd? What should I do, I have no idea what files are missing...??

    The correct System utility to mount and open a disc image (.dmg) so you
    can begin to install the contents is called DiskImageMounter and it should
    be a choice by default to open any .dmg in 10.4.11.
    DiskImageMounter is a core utility of about 452KB in size located here:
    Path: /System/Library/CoreServices/DiskImageMounter.app/Contents/MacOS/DiskImageMount er
    You'd never use the Change All option to use any non-system utility or app
    as a replacement in such places as this purposed utility. No reason to, either.
    Pacifist is good for a one-time run per item and manually from the utility or
    an alias in a known location. Extracting packages where there are no direct
    installers available is what that utility is primarily about. It should never be a
    default-use product since it is intended to do specific things.
    You may be able to repair disk and repair disk permissions from the booted
    Installer disc, using the Installer's version of Disk Utility found in the menubar
    drop-down choices. Perhaps that'll allow the system to revert to the original
    default choices. But I don't know for sure.
    You could also try booting the computer into SafeBoot (shift key held throughout
    the start from just after the start tone and until you see a Login screen) and then
    run the system's native Disk Utility to repair disk permissions, then when done, re
    start the computer normally to exit SafeBoot. This may help, in addition see if the
    original DiskImageMounter can be found and chosen to perform its native task.

    I LOVE MY MACBOOK. I HATE ALGEBRA. But the software that we need in order to do our assignments is not compatible with Safari, I guess... needs Windows, but I don't understand. What is Boot Camp? What is Parallels? Is there a special Mac version of Windows? I don't want to put Windows on here, but I have to pass this class!
    Please help. I need an economical and non-techie way to fix my problem.

  • In desperate need of help trying to get router installed

    Hi,
    I have a macbook and I have just bought a Belkin router and have put the setup disk in the drive. It says to open up the disk and click start.osx.
    When I do this it just says 'There is no default application specified to open the document "start.osx"
    Then offers me the choice to choose application.
    What do I do? Please help me before I lose all my hair!

    I concur with the previous suggestion. I find the "setup wizards" to be useless at worst or poor at best. I'm thinking the only useful thing on that setup CD is the user manual.
    I think Belkin's usual web interface is at http://192.168.2.1:88 . That's what I recall from trying to get one working. Plug it in via the ethernet cable and try accessing the configuration from there. HTTP (web-page style) interfaces work great although sometimes you need to hunt around for all the steps you need. Even someone who uses a setup wizard will need to use the standard web-based configuration screens for more advanced settings and monitoring.

  • Can't install boot camp(Am in desperate need of help!!!)

    Ok, the story, I will try to make it short:
    -Got my Imac a month ago. Installed Boot Camp Vista Home Premium 64 Bit. No problem. Ran smooth.
    -Later I got VMWare fusion and decided to check it out. Didn't like to to much, but now I can't install Boot Camp.
    -When using Boot Camp assistent, it creates my partition(which 200 GB) Fat32! The problem is, when it wants to boot to install. It ejects the Vista installation DVD! No matter what I do.
    -*If I hold down the ALT key(option button) during start up*, it will show a grey screen with two options(The Macintosh HD and the Windows Partition). Selecting the Windows partition gives a black screen with an error; *"non-system disk press any key to reboot"* Only problem is that the keyboard was dead or frozen so had to crash the machine.
    -Pressing D on start up to enable the *Apple Hardware Test* showed no problems.
    -Pressing Alt + Cmd(command) + P + R to *delete the NVRam and PRAM*, did not have any effect. I think I did it right though, because there came a second start up sound.
    -Pressing S + Cmd(command) on start up to run *User Single Mode*, with the command; "/sbin/fsck -fy" did not reveal any problems either, except for a weird long messege that kept coming up, and which interupted the line I was writing on several times.     -Tried going into Startup disk, to force Vista to install from boot up, but it ejected upon startup anyway.
    -Tried rebooting while holding down "C" to force a startup from a CD/DVD. Vista installation DVD still ejected.
    -Tried reinstalling Leopard with the Leopard Installation Disc 01, but it also ejecred upon rebooting to install! < This lead me to believe that it's my Superdrive that is messed up, but it plays DVD Movies just fine, and I even just now just burned the Vista installation DVD to my desktop in a .dmg file. So I am not sure if that is it!
    -I tried taking a different Windows Vista DVD(Windows Vista 32 Bit Home Premium) to see if it could install from that. It could not, and ejected upon startup like the Leopard and 64 Bit Home Premium Vista Installation DVD!
    I am new to Mac, but I am desperate after getting boot camp to work again. I have litterly been trying to figure this out for days, and I can't get it to work. I tried to call Apple but they couldn't help me.:( I could really use your help. I just want it to work.
    And speaking of working, I haven't been to work for two days, because I have been home trying to figure this out. It's critical that I get boot camp working. So please, mates, can't you help me.

    Does [this firmware update|http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/firmware_hardware/imacefifir mwareupdate13.html] apply to your machine? If so, putting it on may fix the boot from DVD problem.

  • In desperate need of help from BT

    I am in the middle of the most frustrating series of events ever and its an absolutre shambles. What should have been a simple house move and resign up with BT (after many years a customer) has been a ridiculous farce. We had a connection date. You cancelled it for resaons that initially werent made clear. We rang to sort it out several times, were put through to many different departments, hung up on twice (professional CS!) have spent nearly 5 hours on the phone. Have now had our order cancelled 3 times. No one at BT has actually helped, plenty of apologies but these do not resolve the issue. We are now told, one month after initial connection date that you dont have control of the line??? You will have known this from the first attempt. To cap it all, someone from - I presume overseas call centre ( bad english, complete lack of understanding of basic conversation - not for the first time) has just rang and asked if we want to place an order as the last order has been cancelled. This will be the latest of a list or "orders" with no resolution. People that work dont have the time to be on the phone for numerous hours being passed from pillar to post with no sign of a resolution. 
    I have complained through the complaints email, guess what, no response.

    I dont hold out much hope of anyone at BT being interested in sirting this out, but heres hoping

  • Desperate need of HELP for a Java GUI !

    Hy people,
    I am working on a project trying to display a GUI where its output is dependant on the user's input.
    Here is a brief example of what Im trying to do:
    You have a GUI that contains 2 panels. buttonPanel and DisplayPanel.
    buttonPanel contains:
    a dropdown list: includes choices of colors,
    2 textfields: the length: (can enter from 1 to 100),
    the width: (can enter from 1 to 100),
    a checkbox: random
    and a start button.
    Now when I enter ALL the information needed in the components and then press start button, it should display its result in the DisplayPanel.
    In my case, I want to display just one rectangle to start off. That will have its color changed by the dropdown choice made. Now Im forgetting about the length and width textfield for now cause that will be incorporated for something else later on.
    I created a buttonLitener for the start button and an ItemListener for the dropDown List.
    I declared and drew a rectangle specific to the color chosen by the user in a class I created called DrawingCanvas that extends Canvas and that overrides the paint method.
    BUT My problem is that it does not display the rectangle I created in my DisplayPanel when I press on the Start button.
    I provided a screenshot of the GUI interface, and my 2 java files. Is someone brave enough to fix my problem or even tell me what Im doing wrong ?!

    Seriously, look at the first reply in the following thread. It gives a pretty good idea of generally accepted good practices in the forum.

    It is probably better to post code directly on the forum than to try to get people to take the extra steps to download, unzip, and compile your code. That way, they can just cut and paste to try to compile. Be sure to use [code][/code] tags to make your code easier to use. And, try to provide a small example of your problem if the code is very long or complex.
    Another piece of advice. Don't try to challenge the regulars in this forum to prove that they are smart enough, brave enough, whatever enough to tackle YOUR problem. The regulars here include software engineers, authors, and generally very smart and experienced people They don't need to prove themselves to anyone.
    What they want to see is that you have genuinely tried to understand your problem, rather than just running to the forum the first time you get a compiler error.
    You seem to have been working on this problem. Go ahead and create a test case that shows what the problem is. Quite frequently, just doing that will help you solve the problem yourself.

  • New to BC and in desperate need of help setting up my online store!

    So, I'm nearing the tear-your-hair-out stage of attempting to set up an online store.
    I'm brand new to BC, and the only reason we're trying it out is because Adobe claims the integration for e-commerce is so easy.  Ahem.  I created a Muse website for a client ( http://themenschonabench.businesscatalyst.com/index.html ).  For the time being, I just want to offer ONE item to be purchased through the 'cart' page.  Can anyone give me easy to follow instructions on how to go about this?  I've watched a million tutorials and haven't found one that SIMPLY explains how to link one product to a template I've already established in Muse.

    Yeah, Muse.
    Muse is a basic site creator that steps you into the web world. For that it is really good and quite nice useability. But that is as far as it goes for now, It does not support more complex website features such as the eCommerce directly.
    You need to have a beter understanding of html, css and javascript to utliise all of BC eCommerce properly, but without that knowledge if you just develop it in the BC Admin you can get something produced.

  • Poor student in desperate need of help getting my Adam 4017 and 18 units functioning!!

    Thought I was getting a great deal. Like the loggers. Have them hooked up but I can not link to any program. Grant it I am a novice when it comes to these things. Im a microbiologist looking for bacteria that makes electric not a programmer.
    I need the most cost effective way to record data off of these loggers. Im supposesd to begin a project on friday. Dasylab? Anything. If I can just collect the numbers in a folder I can process.

    DASYLab 13 includes an ADAM module that should work with those units. 
    You do need to ensure that they are configured correctly, and have unique unit ids, and that they are wired correctly. Documentation should be available on the Advantech site.
    You can download the DASYLab 13 evaluation from www.dasylab.com. Choose the Evaluation mode, and select the ADAM driver under the Data Acquisition packages.
