Refurbished MBP (and upgrades) or Next Gen MBP

Hey everyone,
So I was pretty much set on the new MBP as my next computer purchase...but seeing this article is really making me second guess the choice (http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9228070/Retina_MacBook_Pro_least_repairab le_notebook_ever_says_iFixit ).  I've started to look at alternatives to this computer, and that has led me to apple's refurbished site which in turn led me to this (http://store.apple.com/us/product/G0M12LL/A#overview).  It's considerably cheaper, as well as uses standard parts that will be easy to find upgrades for.  I'll have 478 dollars for upgrades (becuase I'm eligible for the ed. discount, which drops the price of the new MBP to 2000, but I'll have to get the external CD drive for one of my jobs, which raises it to 2078).  That'll be enough to buy 8GB of ram, a 128GB SSD, an enclosure for the 750GB HDD (yay new external), and a nice-ish DAC and headphone amp.  As you can tell, I'm definitely leaning towards this option, but I want to make a solid decision on a notebook that will last me 2-3 years.  Here's some questions I have for you all:
-Memory: can 1600Mhz memory be put in a 2/2011 version MBP?  If not, will there be performance sacrifices going with 1333 MHz?  (I googled this for a bit but couldn't find anything concretely answering my question).  Even so, is it worth the cost of going for the faster speed, if I decide to go refurb?
-SSD: Spec wise, how do you think this Crucial SSD will compare to the internal SSD of the retina MBP? (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148443).  It's also nice to know that I can upgrade to a larger SSD in the future, if prices drop significantly.
-Processor:  I believe that the 2/2011 version MBP used Sandy Bridge processors, while the new gen of MBP use Ivy Bridge.  From what I've read online, the spec bump produces only minute changes.  Any thoughts here?
-Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6750M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory vs. NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory...and majoy differences?  Already found comparisons of the Intel HD 3000/4000, and that's shown that there really isn't considerable difference.
-Ports: The refurb has a thunderbolt port (which hopefully, they'll make a cost-effective USB 3.0 adapter for) so I think I'm set there.  Right now, I only have USB 2.0 devices currently, so this is pretty much a non-issue (aside from future-proofing).  A point for the retina side here though, as an HDMI port without dongles to worry about would be nice, but that's a relatively minor issue.
-Display/Size/Misc.: The increased resolution/slimness/less weight are all awesome, don't get me wrong.  But none of them are deciders for me.  Plus, having an internal optical drive is a convenience to me (just because of my job).  Just a note:I'm not sore at them for getting rid of it, because I realize I'm in a specific niche for those.  Anyways, anything else I'm missing to help make this decision easier/harder?
I value your opinions here, and I appreciate you all taking the time to read this long post, and posssibly helping me out!
-John

Put RAM that the MBP is designed for.  You run the risk of needless problems otherwise.
SSDs are still too expensive in my opinion.  Unless you are using CPU intensive applications the only place you will detect significant performance increases are boot and shut off times.  But if you insist...
Unless you are an ardent gamer, the GPU should not be a big issue.
If your current peripherals are USB 2, you have no problems.  Thunderbolt is much faster than USB 3 thus as Thunderbolt peripherals become available, you will be 'future protected'.
OWC and Crucial are two best places to purchase RAM and Mac peripherals.  Both offer good customer support.
Ciao.

  • Adobe's take on CS6 performance on the next gen MBP

    Forgive me if I missed this, but being gutted they still haven't released a new Mac Pro (spec bumps released today don't count), I'm thinking of just getting a Next Gen MBP and work from there.  Does Adobe have an opinion on how it performs with CS6 particulaly related to Cuda acceleration and the Mercury Playback engine?  Will it do well with only 16GB of RAM and the internal 650M card?

    I'm not Adobe and don't speak for them.  What I say here is probably worth less than you paid for it.  However...
    Doing some thought exercises should pretty much answer your question.  Some things about the new MBP (which I intend to get, eventually) -
    1GB of VRAM.  MPE in hardware mode, assuming it works with the GT650M (and no reason to assume it won't) will be somewhat hobbled with only a Gig of VRAM.
    16G of RAM is probably enough but a bit on the tight side depending on what you're editing.
    Spinning media: using a laptop for your primary editing rig is always a challenge due to storage.  The new MBPs have 2 Thunderbolt ports which is nice, so you'd be encouraged to add external storage via those ports.  But doing so is going to cost you some serious $$.
    Can you do it?  I'd assume so.  Will it perform as well as a Mac Pro with a decent video card and a cubic f'load of RAM in it?  Probably not.  IMHO: I think you're foolish to walk away from the Mac Pro for PPro editing if you want to stay in the Mac world.  The new MBP laptops look superb, and after years of having cruddy displays on their 15" laptops, Apple has finally turned a weakness into a strength (2880x1800.. good grief!)  But, unless you start going nuts with Thunderbolt add-ons, the laptop is still going to be I/O-bound to some extent, and limited in what it can do from a video performance perspective.

  • JRE7Update25 Deployment Properties File Not Working And Cant Disable Next Gen Plugin

    Good Day
    Our organisation needs to deploy JRE7U25 to over 4000 workstations. Our desktops are running the following Windows and IE combinations:
    WinXP 32 Bit/IE7
    WinXP 32 Bit/IE8
    Win7 32 Bit/IE8
    Win7 32 Bit/IE9
    Win7 64 Bit/IE8
    Win7 64 Bit/IE8
    We use the 32bit JRE installer across all environments and all IE browsers use 32Bit IE. On all of our environments the Deployment.properties and config files no longer work due to what appears to be a bug in the JRE7U25 installer. Our deployment files are as follows:
    Deployment.config
    deployment.system.config=C:\WINDOWS\Sun\Java\Deployment\deployment.properties
    deployment.system.config.mandatory=true
    Deployment.properties
    deployment.security.level=MEDIUM
    deployment.security.level.locked=
    deployment.javaws.autodownload=NEVER
    deployment.javaws.autodownload.locked=
    deployment.security.mixcode=HIDE_RUN
    deployment.security.mixcode.locked=
    deployment.console.startup.mode=HIDE
    deployment.console.startup.mode.locked=
    Both files are being copied to the following location:
    C:\Windows\Sun\Java\Deployment
    After the installer runs and deployment files are copied to the workstation the deployment.properties and config files look like this:
    Deployment.config
    deployment.system.config=C:\WINDOWS\Sun\Java\Deployment\deployment.properties
    deployment.system.config.mandatory=true
    Deployment.properties
    #System Deployment Properties
    #Mon Jul 01 12:29:20 CAT 2013
    deployment.security.level=MEDIUM
    I have tried changing the deployment.config file as follows in an attempt to fix this to no avail:
    1. deployment.system.config=C:\\WINDOWS\\Sun\\Java\\Deployment\\deployment.properties
        deployment.system.config.mandatory=true
    2. deployment.system.config=C:\\WINDOWS\\Sun\\Java\\Deployment\\deployment.properties
        deployment.system.config.mandatory=false
    3. deployment.system.config=C:\WINDOWS\Sun\Java\Deployment\deployment.properties
        deployment.system.config.mandatory=true
    4. deployment.system.config=C:\WINDOWS\Sun\Java\Deployment\deployment.properties
        deployment.system.config.mandatory=false
    5. deployment.system.config=file\:C\:/WINDOWS/Sun/Java/Deployment/deployment.properties
    None of the above mentioned works. So all our required settings in the deployment.properties file are being overwritten when opening the Java console? Our other major problem is that Changing the registry key to 0 in order to disable the next generation plugin does not disable the next generation plugin in Jre at the usual location as it worked for us machine wide (across multiple profiles for JRE6U29):
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft\Java Plug-in\10.25.2]
    "UseNewJavaPlugin"=dword:00000000
    ^^I have observed on a fresh install of JRE7U25 that the above mentioned registry key no longer exists in this version so a computer wide disablement of this option is no longer possible via the registry.
    On our 32Bit and 64bit machines running the 32 bit JRE 7U25 client when we disable the next generation plugin it keeps enabling itself again. Even when we run the javacpl.exe to run as administrator by changing the compatibility settings and disabling the next generation plugin it enables itself again. This is a huge problem for us because our company Oracle web based applications need this plugin to be disabled in order to run the apps properly.
    These are major obstacles for our deployment as we desperately require assistance or any advice in addressing these issues as there appear to be numerous bugs with the JRE7U25 release. Thank you in advance.
    Update 7 July 2013:
    I have observed that if you have the following options in your Deployment.config file it doesn't allow our java webstart apps which use jnlp extensions to run.
    1. deployment.system.config=C:\\WINDOWS\\Sun\\Java\\Deployment\\deployment.properties
        deployment.system.config.mandatory=true
    2. deployment.system.config=C:\\WINDOWS\\Sun\\Java\\Deployment\\deployment.properties
        deployment.system.config.mandatory=false
    3. deployment.system.config=C:\WINDOWS\Sun\Java\Deployment\deployment.properties
        deployment.system.config.mandatory=true
    4. deployment.system.config=C:\WINDOWS\Sun\Java\Deployment\deployment.properties
        deployment.system.config.mandatory=false
    The jnlp file association is also broken on Windows XP workstations with JRE7U25. We are having to manually associate the .jnlp file extension with javaws.exe on workstation for Web start apps or else users cannot lauch JRE whn clicking on .jnlp links.
    The only Deployment.config syntax which allows our Webstart applications to run is as follows:
    deployment.system.config=file\:C\:/WINDOWS/Sun/Java/Deployment/deployment.properties
    What a mess!

    I don't have an answer to the problem, but I am having problems with the system level deployment.properties file and IE9 on Windows 7 32/64bit.
    Starting with version 13, the IE plugin seems to igonore the system level deployment.properties file in favor of the user level deployment.properties file. When I open the Java Control Panel, the settings are correct per the system deployment.properties file. Currently to get the Java Plugin to work reliably in IE9 I have to set the following:
    _JAVA_OPTIONS = -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true
    Disable caching
    Set the proxy to Direct Connection.
    If I set the _JAVA_OPTIONS as an environment variable and the other two in the system deployment.properties file, Firefox works fine, but IE wont load either of the Java tests. If I removed the system deployment.properties files and configure the user deployment.properties file, both IE and Firefox work fine.
    I find it interesting that if I set the configuration through the control panel, then apply the system deployment.propteries file, the user deployment.properties file reverts to defaults when the system file is removed.

  • Late 2007 MBP and upgrading to 8 Gb ram?

    Hello all,
    I have a late 2007 MacBook Pro, Intel Core2 Duo, that I want to increase the memory.
    There seems to be a bit of disagreement as to max amount, but it seems that 6Gb is the limit.  I want to populate both slots with 4Gb sticks, for a total of 8Gb.
    I am doing this in advance of an upgrade to Mountain Lion.
    I realize that my MBP will still only address 6Gb, according to what I’ve researched, but I want to possibly maintain dual channel memory operation, using the two matching sticks.
    Has anyone actually done/tried this before?
      Will it even work?  Is the cost of the more expensive sticks worth it.
      Will it actually retain dual channel operation if I do this?
    Has anyone just used a 2Gb and a 4Gb stick, with no realistic and noticeable slowdown?
    Thank you in advance for your help!
    Dave

    If so, should I place the 4Gb stick in any specific slot, or will it not matter...

  • MBP and Netgear RangeMax NEXT (802.11n)

    Hi,
    Does anyone know if MBP works with RangeMax 802.11n? I am thinking about getting one of these but wondering the compatibility issue.
    15.3" MacBook Pro 2.33GHz Core2Duo & 20" iMac 2GHz Intel Core Duo 2GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   30GB iPod, BlackBerry 8700g and can't ask for more!!!

    I have a friend who uses one of the RangeMax 802.11g models with no problems. They do list Mac OS among the system requirements for both. I also understand from reviews that the interface has changed very little. I would say that bodes well for the 802.11n model working with the Mac as well as the 802.11g did.
    I have never been impressed with Netgear using any wireless cards than their own though. As I understand it top speeds can only be achieved using their wireless card. I have also found range to only be acceptable (despite the RangeMAX name) with Netgear routers, never great.
    YMMV. Those have just been my experiences with them.

  • Early iPhone Upgrade for next Gen iPhone?

    I'm very curious to if Verizon will go the same route as AT&T and offer upgrades to the newest model of iphone at anytime.  With AT&T when a new iPhone comes out or anytime you can upgrade your current phone to the iPhone for $200 early upgrade fee.  So if you went to buy the iPhone4 from AT&T anytime during the year you could renew two years from that date and get the phone for $399.00

    There is no way to know this until a). a new iPhone is actually announced and b). Verizon announces any early upgrade info in relation to it. As of now, expect to pay full retail for any upgrade if you aren't eligible for one until further notice.

  • Can I use the CD that came with my MBP to upgrade my iMac?

    I've had an iMac G5 for a couple years now with the 10.3.9 operating system. I just bought a MBP that has the 10.4.9 OSX. Can I use the installation cd that came with the MBP and upgrade my iMac to tiger?

    Hello scotty:
    Short answer - no. The OS X that came with your MBP is licensed for one computer. If you want to use OS X 10.4 on all your computers (I do), you can buy a "family" license that permits installation on up to five computers. Also, from a practical point of view, the software installed on new computers is, as I understand it, hardware specific.

  • MBP and Phototshop

    I'm currently a PC user and will be purchasing an apple soon. I write books and use Word, Photoshop, and other programs for illustrations and photos. When the books are nearly complete, they are about 2 gigs, which causes my PC to freeze with those **** "Send" "Don't Send" errors.
    How does the MBP perform under heavy load with large files, and will it handle heavy Photoshop use?
    Would there be any difference between the MBP and a Powerbook?

    The MBP operates very smoothly, but no version of any Adobe Creative Suite software is out yet that is universal (will run on Intel & Powerbook processors). You can run the current versions of Adobe CS on a MBP, but it is run using rosetta which is a simulator imitating a Power PC processor ultimately causing some slowing in the program. Apple says that when running a Power PC based program on an Intel Mac will work thanks to rosetta, the program will possibly run slower that it should. I run Adobe CS 1 on my MBP using rosetta and the slowness that is warned about using rosetta is not really noticable, it actually processed smoother that my 2.6GHz HP with 1GB RAM.
    A plus with the intel based macs is that you can install Windows XP on it, and it will run natively, then you could ultimately install your windows copy of Photoshop.
    My advice is that if you don't wanna run Windows on it, then wait for Adobe to come out with the a Universal version of Adobe CS.

  • Help me choose a model and upgrades please.

    Hi guys,
    Basically I am stuck on a air few things with deciding what models along with upgrades. I am stuck between getting the MBP 15 inch 2.6GHz or the Retina 15 inch 2.3GHz. For starters I would say I want to use the MBP for general stuff like office and more complex programs like SSPS, surfing the net downloading movies and music and playing games like Rome total War amongst many other games etc. However, I think I have read the Retina display does not even work with all games?
    Due to the relative low price I'm sure I will upgrade to 16 GB worth of RAM  If get the Retina MBP as you can't upgrade them further down the line (*****). I beleve with the Retina MBP there is no disk drive, so i can't directly insert DVD's or Burn files onto disks etc, but this can be overcome by buying the Apple USB Super Drive, am I correct?
    The Retina display only has 256 GB flash storage and that is kinda of low, will it more then enough for what I want to use the MBP for? What would that flash storage not be enough for?
    If I get the normal 15 inch 2.6Hz MBP then I will upgrade the screen Hi-res glossy widescreen display as I like to play games and watch movies. Is it worth upgrading the hardrive the improve seed, efficientcy and power performance?
    Overall what model would you say best suites my needs thanks?

    Actually I have been doing further research and I personally would either go with the 2.6GHz NON RETINA MBP or cough up the cash and go all out on a 2.6GHz RETINA MBP and upgrade the RAM to 16GB  and upgrade to 768GB Flash storage, I am a student as well so will get a discount which will help.
    My fears are that if I get the Retina model I will not be able to upgrade it even further, I want to keep the computer for at least a good 5 years, during those 5 to 8 years will the current upgrades be enough to keep up with the top games and programs etc? Also I have read that repairing the Retina display model is very diffcult  and it can malfunction commonly, so I am guessing I should get apple care on top of it just to be sure with this particular model?
    I am assuming that they they will bring out the new models out next year and all the chinks and bugs of the current Retina model will be fixed so to speak, of which I have read there is a few... Would it be worth buying the NON RETINA MBP and then selling and upgrading to an improved RETINA MBP model next year?
    Finally if i back up my files on a hardrive would I have to use the USP SUPER DRIVE to install files onto the RETINA MBP or can i directly do this without the USP SUPERDRIVE?
    Thanks

  • Upgraded to new MBP and now I can't bounce?

    I recently upgraded my MPB and now for some reason, when I bounce, the file is empty/silent. I am using all the same gear and the same templates I used on my old computer. Nothing has changed except the computer. I went line by line through every setting with the old computer and everything is the same.
    Any insights? I tried bouncing in every format both offline and online. Same results. I also opened the file on my old computer and it bounced just fine.
    Help?

    Have you tried trashing logic prefs? Or perhaps copy the prefs from your old computer to your MBP, and substitute the current prefs there.
    Have you looked in System Preferences... and checked the sound settings?
    As a last resort, you can try zapping the PRAM, although that resets every system setting to defaults. Before starting up, press shift-option-p-r (a 'chord') and lift after the second chime.

  • Is it possible to configure Time Capsule to work with Time Machine (MBP) and Genie Timeline (PC)

    I have an Apple Time Capsule (2TB) and I need to configure it to work with my MBP and Time Machine and also back up my a PC with Genie Timeline Pro 2013 (or any other suggested PC back up software).
    Setting it up to work with Time Machine is simple enough but the PC access is proving to be difficult.
    http://www.genie9.com/support/KB/KnowledgeArticle.aspx?KBID=198
    I followed the above steps but still can't connect to the network drive.  I have reformatted the TC and will be walking through the steps again.  My concern is that the two different operating systems (Win8 and Mavericks) can't share the same destination drive.
    I have created two user accounts with drive sharing activated.  One in my name for my MBP and the other in the name of my partner for her Dell laptop.
    Should the Time Capsule be partitioned?  Can it even be partitioned?  When I use Drive Utility it can't see the TC.  The only way to connect to it seems to be via Airport Utility.
    On a seperate note the TC Router Mode is set to OFF (Bridge Mode).  I have connected it to the ADSL modem/router (WiFi Off) via the WAN port.  All seems to be well.  Am I loosing any useful functionality by doing this?
    The internet settings are set Connect Using DHCP.  I have no issues but I am not really sure what it means and if I should be using other settings.  The ADSL modem/router seems to have all the PPP0E settings.
    The WiFi on the TC has been set up with a 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz network as well as a Guest Network.  I then plan to introduce 2 Airport Express (MB321LL/A). One will be an access point for AirPlay and the other a wireless extender with AirPlay.
    There is also a Canon WiFi printer that accesses the 2.4Ghz network.  It has an Ethanet port so I am wondering if I should disable the wifi connection and cable it and if so to the TC or the DSL modem/router.

    Lion, 7.6.1 firmware and iCloud offers remote access.
    http://www.apple.com/au/support/icloud/back-to-my-mac/
    To do it without the iCloud service your issue is static public IP address.. if you have one this is simple to the point of trivial. If not it is very hard, as Apple did not put in a standard dynamic DNS service.. (ensuring you were roped into their cloud accounts). Static IP from your ISP is the best solution.. if it is possible go for it.
    Then the actual protocol for access is AFP, so the only device you can do this on is a Mac.
    Do you have the TC as the main router?
    If you want any other kind of access, or to avoid icloud use vpn.. which teamviewer is a kind of.. but buy a real vpn router, and bridge the TC.. you can then vpn into your network with full security and get windows access via smb..

  • Upgrading HDD on new MBP 15" and transfering all Data and settings from 2011 model to 2012 one

    Hi all,
    I have just purchased a new 2012 MBP 15" (Non-retina) machine as well as a hybrid 750GB drive from Seagate and 16GB RAM upgrade from Crucial. Both machines are running the latest versions of Lion. What I would like to do is the following:
    Upgrade the HDD & RAM in the new 2012 MBP - I think it is the same procedure as the 2011 model (which I have already done using Carbon Copy Cloner)
    Transfer all the data, settings, programmes files, docs etc to the new 2012 MBP and new drive
    Q1. Would I have to clone the current HDD in the 2012 MBP with the new hybrid one first and then install into the machine before transferring the data from the 2011 machine?
    Q2. Or - Could I just clone the current HDD in the 2011 model using CCC to the new Hybrid HDD and then instal it into the new 2012 MBP?
    Whats the best and safest way to achieve this please? Any advice very welcome!
    Many Thanks

    So, everything went fairly well. It started out looking like it was going to take 2.5 hours, but it ended up taking about 5-6 (I think - I went to sleep).
    A couple of observations - at first I didn't see where it restored everything, but I later saw that when I logged out that it had created my user account as a separate login.
    Some things didn't transfer - most everything did, but there were a few things with my Parallels VM that did not. I have to get to the bottom of that. It did make me re-register once I launched it.
    On the hardware specifically:
    1. I am not yet noticing the performance bump that I thought I would going to the i5 processor - seemed snappy when I first had it on with OS only - but so far not noticeably faster than my Core 2 Duo 2.4.
    2. battery - way too early to tell, but I am hoping the battery needs time to condition itself and figure out who it is (battery life was my #1 reason for buying this) - right now I am on battery power and have 79% remaining or 2hrs. 2 hours??!! This is supposed to be a 8-9 hour battery. Hoping time works this out. Brightness if only up about 20%, on wifi, keybaord backlighting fairly dim. Nothing coming over from my old machine would have affected this, would it have? (I do know that when the machine was empty with just the OS on it, it was reading about 8 hrs remaining). So much for living on the edge and going to the office without my power adapter today.
    3. Heat - my 13" was not hot on the bottom - this one is - on the back left part of the unit. Reminding me of my Powerbook G4. Not very lap comfortable. ??
    Any thoughts?
