Refurbishing a Laptop

I have a Satellite Pro 6100.  The hard drive has been acting up for a while and just crashed; but, all my files are backed up and I recently ordered a Qosmio X305-706 that should show up any time now.
I am thinking of replacing the hard drive and battery (it is on its last leg.  I have all of the original install CDs.
Any recommended sources for the hardware?  I am assuming it is the same general process as replacing a desktop drive.
Thoughts?

Hi defrick!
Try checking with the Toshiba National parts depot. Phone # 1-800-524-8338
Hope they can help for the hardware part.

  • Identify brandnew and refurbished Toshiba laptop

I have just bought a Toshiba laptop: L510 - S4011. I want to check whether this laptop is brandnew or refurbished. What should I do ? Can I check it via the "part number" and "serial number" of a Toshiba laptop ??? Or by any other methods ? Thanks.

It's my understanding that the B suffix indicates a reconditioned model

  • How to identify built in laptop camera

I have a refurbished HP laptop. It has a built in webcam. I have no idea what webcam it is.
lsusb doesn't help me, as it's not a usb device.
How do I identify the hardware so that I may find the right drivers for it?

The webcam is physically present, though it's entirely possible that it doesn't work. It is, after all, a refurb. I'm not sure what HP model it is (all identifying stickers were removed before it came into my possession) and I'm not sure if it ever worked (I've never had another OS on it before).

  • MSIGE60 not using dedicated graphics?

i everyone, I recently purchased a refurbished MSIGe60 laptop online equipped with a 2gb Nvidia Gtx660m and has the integrated intel HD 4000 as well. My laptop at the moment seems to be always using the Intel graphics, because I am getting terrible performance for games that this should be able to play as I've reserached on various videos on youtube. For example, I should be able to play skyrim with at least high graphics at 60fps , but whenever I load it up the game automatically has my settings to Low, and even if i change it to high the fps is unbearable. I have the latest drivers as far as im aware, and whenever I play a game it is always has the "run with NVIDIA high performance processor" as a default. Is there anything I can do about this? I have searched this topic many times and I know many people with the same model laptop have had this problem but I can't seem to solve what is wrong with it not using the graphics card even if it is set to it. Any tips would be much appreciated, thank you.

Nope, for this model power button is not indicator for graphics cards
its always light in blue with regardless what video card is in use
    @GatorKing95
is your nvidia card 660m is proper installed when you look in device manager?
    If yes:
when you go to Nvidia control panel,
under 3D settings, then select "Adjust image settings with preview"
and leave it in that way, does your Turbo button start lighting?
If I remember right, the power button still changes on the GE series. Watching a few videos, I did in fact see the power button switching colors when using different video cards. I believe ALL the gaming laptops use this feature, as an added indicator for which video card is in fact in use.

  • Macbook or powerbook?

    Hey-
I'm going to get a free dell from my mom tomorrow that I intend to sell for $400-500 tops. I'd like to take those proceeds and put them towards buying a refurbished Apple laptop.
however, i'm torn between the refurbished powerbooks which are, shockingly, more expensive than the refurbished macbooks (not looking at macbook pros).
personally, I like the design and build of the powerbooks over the macbooks, but the macbooks (even the non-pro models) look more powerful than the powerbooks. I'll be using it for photoshop work (graphic design, photo cleanup, web design), and multimedia stuff.
so can i get a recommendation? macbook or powerbook? (generally looking for something 15 inch, at least 512mb ram, preferrably 1gb)
    thank you!!!
    chris

The refurbished Powerbooks you are looking at were the top of the line laptops before the Intel Macs were released. They are the predecessors to the MacBook Pros (not the MacBooks.) MacBooks are cheaper because they don't have most of the features that were available in those refurbed Powerbooks.
If you can't spend the money for a MacBook Pro or late-model Powerbook, then you have plenty of choices amongst refurbished iBook G4s or refurbished MacBooks. If you want a 15" screen, then iBooks and MacBooks are off the list. Only the MBPs and PBs have the larger screens.
Read the specs for whatever you're interested in. You will find specs for all Mac models at www.apple.com/support/specs/.

I've tried everything I can possibly think of to fix it and nothing has worked. I think that the hard drive might be going bad. These are the things I've tried that haven't worked:
    - I've tried resseting the PRAM, no difference.
    - I've tried booting into safe mode by holding shift, the logo flashes between an apple and question mark until you let go of shift, and then it tries to boot normally and fails to start as usual.
-I've tried entering single user mode to see where exactly the loading process is getting stuck. Here is a picture of where it stops (sorry for the bad quality)
The last 5 lines of code you see in the picture just repeat indefinitely until you shut off the laptop. It doesn't allow you to type on this screen (i.e., I can't use the fsck -fy command)
    - I was able to boot the laptop into recovery mode, but it booted into it VERY slowly. And it continued to be very slow the entire time I was in the recovery mode. I selected the option to re-install Lion, I got to the window where you choose the disk to re-install, and the disk that shows is the recovery partition.
I tried using the disk utitilty to re-format the main partition but the disk "failed to unmount". I also tried dividing the main partition into 2 separate ones to see if that would work and it failed again.
Please, any help would be greatly appreaciated.

Also, I tried using the fsck -fy command with the terminal that's available in the recovery mode, and it came back saying everything was normal.

  • Imovie won't download again

My sister refurbished her laptop and deleted all of the apps before handing it over to me. I wanted to redownload iMovie, but instead of install it just says accept. Once I've accepted the app still won't download?

Your sister needs to have erased and reinstalled the version of OS X that shipped from the factory installed on the Mac and the preinstalled iLife apps using OS X Recovery and also called Apple Care to have the Mac released form her Apple ID.

  • Powerbook or macbook?

    Hey-
I'm going to get a free dell from my mom tomorrow that I intend to sell for $400-500 tops.
(generally looking for something 15 inch, at least 512mb ram, preferrably 1gb)
    thank you!!!
    chris

MacBook Pro is 15.4" SIG. Though the MacBook non-Pro itself is 13.3 inches.
Photoshop was the key word here. Photoshop has not been fully optimized for use with the MacBook or MacBook Pro, but with maxing out the RAM, you can avoid too much of a slowdown. Get at least 2 GB of RAM, and you'll be doing very well. For most everything else, MacBook Pros are definitely more powerful. Read the specs and you'll see almost everything is faster and better on the MacBook Pros. The MacBook non-pro is really a consumer machine and not a machine for serious Photoshop work, though for regular non-serious Photoshop work it is fine.
Watch out about refurbished Macs, you often get less than you would when buying new, and many try to cheat you out of what you would get when you buy new. See my FAQ* http://www.macmaps.com/usedrefurbished.html

  • Thoughts please on using Powerbook for graphics/best place to find 2nd hand

not sure where the best place for this post was so apologies if it's in the wrong spot - I'm thinking of getting a laptop as a 2nd Mac, mainly for graphics work e.g. InDesign, Photoshop etc what are users thoughts on the Powerbook for this kind of usage and/or where is the best place to look in the UK for 2nd hand/refurbished Mac laptops?
    Thanks!

The Aluminum line topped out at 1.67GHz in the 15" model. Combined with newer features, more RAM capacity, faster buses, brighter displays, these are a big step over the Titaniums.
Although the MB and MBP start at 1.83GHz, which doesn't sound much faster, they have dual cores (basically two processors) and are considerably faster, depending on the apps ability to utilize those cores. Of course, you pay for that speed. If I were going to buy a Ti for anywhere near the price of an Al, I'd certainly get the Al. And if I were going to buy an Al for anywhere near the price of a MBP, no doubt I'd get the MBP.
I think it's going to boil down to what you want to spend, with the ranges being low, medium, and high, as described above. I know that unless I was getting a terrific deal on an Al, I wouldn't even be thinking about it, I'd go MBP all the way.

  • W510 makes a hissing noise

    Hi all,
I just bought a refurbished W510 laptop about two weeks ago.  I love it, but for one problem.  When I turn off the computer or make it go to sleep it will hiss when the lid is closed and the power is connected (in the case or turning it off) or at any time I put it to sleep, power connected or not.
I have updated all the Lenovo suggested updates, which includes a NVIDEA driver.  I saw that there was mention of another driver on the NVIDEA site, but I couldn't figure out which one to use.
    I have a W510 with 2 gig ram, a quadro FX 880M graphics card, and I'm running Windows 7 32-bit Professional.
I talked with tech support and they said they would send me a new AC adaptor, but that was 2 weeks ago and still nothing (the computer can the next day I ordered it).  The power supply is a 135w 20v  FRU PIN: 45N0055
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

Mine also makes a hissing noise..I didn't really bother..mine has other major problems..speaker not working, left click under space bar has issues problems..screen open/closing make a cracking noise..

  • Intel to Quicksilver PPC

Hello, my friend is buying a new iMac for his workstation, and he is going to give me his old model to keep. Upon closer inspection it was a PowerPC and ran tiger (10.4.11). That can't run half of the applications i need for work. On the other hand, I have a rotten 2005 Mac mini that has an intel core 2 duo that I could salvage for parts. Any idea on how to port the chip into the PPC?

Part of the mystery in actual identification of your computer and the OS X it should run or could, is based in a mis-identification of that as a 2005 build year model...
See some Mini Mac models-series information here:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_mini/index-macmini.html
For it to have a Core2Duo it would be a mid-2007 machine and in line with the usual lag of product in the online Apple special deals refurbished store; that is usually 1 to 2 years behind new at the most. Many are of the same year or the immediate prior model, in past instances when I bought from their refurbished store online.
Another resource to confirm specs and build model year, is to find the product serial number, even the remanufacture serial number that is on Apple refurbs that is different than it was when new, and enter that into an online 'indentify by serial number' site, such as one of three I have bookmarked. Identify almost any Apple Mac product by SN. Even my old refurbished G4 laptop from mid-2005, and my G4 late 2005 Mini...
    In example: http://www.powerbookmedic.com/identify-mac-serial.php
The other resource it to get and use the MacTracker free application, to help compare standard specs and upgrade specs, build model years in some detail, best after you identify the unit serial number. Product identification can tell you of product changes, kind/type of supported RAM, ceilings on OS X version, etc.
    {Likely you do not have a 2005 core2duo Mini. There were none manufactured that year. I have a first-model MacBook 13" coreduo from 2006, and the Mini in 2006 had a coreSolo and a coreduo; not core2duo. It would make sense that you actually have a 2007 Mini, if bought from Apple special deals online.}
The total RAM that unit may take could be higher than you find under an incorrect build year spec. Seems likely since the 2005 did not ship with OS X 10.5.x Leopard, and the Tiger 10.4 was included in mid to late 2005/early 2006. Some even had a 'Drop In Upgrade DVD to Leopard' in their box, when new; I have one from 2007. The Early-2006 Mini may have shipped with Tiger in the included install restore disc in the box, Mid/Late-2006 had Leopard included.

  • Should she buy a refurbished laptop?

I am not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I have to start somewhere. My daughter says she needs a Mac for her art classes in college. She is looking at refurbished laptops at the Apple Store site.
I am wondering if refurbished laptops are a good idea, do they hold up up? What are the advantages and disadvantages of buying refurbished. Anyone bought one and loved/hated it?
    Opinions and advice greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Sorry if I didn't make myself clear.
The discount on a refurbished Mac computer, from what I've seen, is much lower than the discount you would get through an education discount. So if you're trying to save money, I would go with the refurbished laptop, especially since the warranty is the same.
I'm just saying that from what I've seen at the genius bar, if you do buy a computer through the school bookstore and it's found defective within the first two weeks, they will repair it, not replace it. However, if you buy the computer directly from an Apple store, whether the brick and mortar store or the online store and show proof, you will get an educational discount. To top it off, if it is found defective within the first two weeks, it will be replaced.
So to me, if you're thinking of using the education discount, it would be better if you bought it directly from Apple instead of the school's bookstore.
I assume that the same would apply to a refurbished computer that's found defective within two weeks. If you bought it from Apple, it will be replaced within two weeks. That's all I'm saying.
In a nutshell: To be safe, buy directly from an Apple store (brick & mortar or online) and get the educational discount or buy a refurbished computer from an Apple store (brick & mortar or online) just in case there are any problems.
