Refusal to sleep

My computer will not sleep. If I select the sleep option, it goes to sleep for about 2 seconds, then the screen comes back up. If I shut the screen, the same thing happens. If I just let the computer "be", it cycles into sleep (after the selected amount of time on the power options) and then out of sleep after about 2 seconds. It would do this all day, draining my battery. Please let me know how I can get my computer to sleep again!

Hi Krista,
Welcome to the Discussions.
Resetting the PMU should fix it. Do that by simultaneously pressing (with the iBook off) and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard. Wait 5 seconds and start the iBook.

  • Late 2009 MBP Refuses to Sleep.

    Hello,
Problem:  My late 2009 Macbook Pro (10.6.8/Snow Leopard) refuses to sleep. It doesn't sleep when I close the lid and when I attempt to put it to sleep manually, the screen goes dark for no more than two seconds then wakes back up. When I close the lid, I observe the white light on the front right that usually oscillates--dims and brightens-- when it is sleeping. Lately, when I close the lid, the light comes on and begins to fade as usual, but as soon as it is dim it quickly comes back on. It is very similar to someone dozing off and forcing their eyes back open quickly, if a visual is needed.
When I put my ear to the bottom of my MBP, it is still running. However, every 20 seconds or so it sounds as though it is attempting to sleep--the fan and other bits slow down-- but starts back up again. The light on the front verifies this, because it dims then relights quickly when this happens. I have not downloaded any applications that prevent my computer from sleeping. I have enabled settings that put my notebook to sleep everyday at the same time, but it never abides.
    Things I've tried:
    -Restart (failed)
    -Power off and restart (failed)
    -Sleep from Apple menu (failed)
    -Sleep from power button (failed)
    -Sleep from lid closing (failed)
-Sleep from login screen in safe mode by closing lid (failed)
-Sleep from login screen in normal mode by closing lid (failed)
    -Resetting SMC (failed)
-Sleep from safe mode after login (failed)
Any help and insight is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks for your time.

  • MBP one user account refuses to sleep.

In my main account my computer refuses to sleep. I made a test account and there it will sleep. So it must be in the user.
    I have
    Repaired permissions

    2. com.apple.AutoWake.plist
    3. com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
    Booted in safe mode

I checked the consol log if anything is writing to it. Not.
    Ditto system log.

Something has changed somewhere, that worked before.
Sorry. I had a bad crash and restored from a very recent backup, (before the crash it slept well) so that backup worked perfect before, and after reinstalling it it did (as a test I started also from the FW HD that the backup is on and it works). 2 days after the restore it started to give me problems. All I did after the restore is install X11 new and Gimpshop. But that also worked fine before.
    So what could it be?

  • Help needed - refuses to sleep on its own

My 733mhz powerpc g4 refuses to sleep on its own even though the energy saver settings are correct. OS10.3.9. No bluetooth devices attached, standard keyboard, mouse and monitor. ADSK cable attached, and a printer, that's all. Who can help? Many thanks,
    Uli

The workaround is to disconnect the cable before you want the Mac to sleep, and reconnect it when you want the computer awake.
Some USB devices, and your printer is apparently one of them, have the annoying habit of asking the computer, "Daddy, are you still awake?" every minute or two, sort of like my children when they were two years old and I was supposedly reading them a bedtime story. Short of swatting it with a two-by-four or disconnecting it, there's nothing you can do to stop it.

  • MDD refuses to sleep or shut down...

    Hi,
My mother is having a very frustrating problem with her MDD powermac. It refuses to shutdown or sleep. When I tell it to sleep, the screen goes black, and the fans stop. However, right as the fans stop, they start back up again and the computer is right back where it was. When I tell it to shut down, the computer goes through the shutdown process and restarts instead.
I've repaired the permissions, disk looks okay, reset the PRAM, unplugged all peripherals (except the monitor - third party with no hubs or computer control). I have also checked the engery saver options for auto power on on power failure.
Any ideas on what could be causing this or where to even start?

    Hi-
Have you tried a SAfe mode boot? Hold Shift whike starting. Safe mode takes a bit longer to boot than a regular boot, as various system checks/repairs are performed. Once in Safe mode, see if the sleep/shut down functions. If so, then it is probably a Startup item.
Another check would be trying a different user account. Setting up a new account with admin privledges is best. If sleep/shut down work in the new user account, then the problem is a Login item.
    Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items.
If this fails to help ID/resolve the problem, an Archive and install would probably be enough.
Without testing for startup/login item conflict, an Archive and Install will carry over any existing problems.

  • Refusing to sleep

My iPod refuses to go to sleep. Usually after a few minutes the screen will go blank, or if its plugged in, the battery icon shows up. But for an unknown reason, it just stays on the menu screen. Can anyone help?
    PC something...   Windows XP Pro

This happened to me with my first 60GB 5G iPod. I was suspicious of the Monster iCarPlay Plus that I bought for it, because it was only after I used it the first time (and got the error message) that I started noticing the problem. I can't prove this, of course, but hearing it from someone else makes me think this might be the case.
Long story short, I called Apple and reported the problem. They had me send the iPod in for repair/replacement (under the AppleCare program) and I wound up getting a new iPod. I'm now very, very careful about what I plug into it. I'm now using a Kensington transmitter, which seems to work well and doesn't give me the error message.

  • Mac Pro refuses to sleep on it's own.

My Mac Pro used to be able to go to sleep by setting the Energy Saver settings to automatically sleep after so many minutes. It no longer sleeps at all on it's own. Lemme explain.
If I put my computer to sleep with the Apple Menu, or Power Button or any other manual method of sleeping my computer, it works but, if I leave it to sleep on it's own only the screen will go black. When I move my mouse, the screen will instantly come back on as if only the screen was sleeping. I know what a normal sleep sounds like... I'd hear a few clicks and hard disk spin downs and then my screen would go black but, it does not do that.
To prevent a bunch of people asking the "Have you tried...?" questions, I'll go ahead and list the things that I have already tried and failed.
    1. Repaired permissions

    8. Checked Activity Monitor for any strange processes running
    9. Checked for scanner software (Couldn't find it)
    10. Tried switching the Mighty Mouse to the right keyboard USB port
    11. Tried un-mounting all hard drives (except for boot drive)

  • Mac Mini G4 refuses to sleep due to KVM switcher

I have a KVM switcher + powered USB hub hooked up between my Mac Mini G4 and a PC- while the PC is able to enter standby mode, my Mac always wakes up within 3 seconds of entering sleep mode. Belkin tech support said this is due to the Mac receiving USB signals (albeit me not moving the mouse, touching the keyboard, etc), and told me to ask Apple how to disable this feature.
Ideally, I'd like the computer only to wake up from a keyboard signal, but the powered hub might be making that unfeasible. However, I'm okay with taking the Mac out of sleep mode by pressing the button on its back.
Can anyone tell me how to fix this (as my LCD monitor's output is beginning to suffer)?
    Thanks,
    Jamie

Hi, Jamie. Welcome to the Discussions.
    1. You wrote: "I have a KVM switcher + powered USB hub"It's unclear if you mean:
    a. Two separate peripheral devices, i.e. KVM switchbox and a powered USB hub.
    b. One peripheral device that performs both functions.1.1. Which is it, (a) or (b)?
1.2. If (b), is the USB hub is connected to each computer, or the KVM switchbox? If the former, try the latter. Don't connect the same USB hub directly two two computers2. You wrote: "Belkin tech support said this is due to the Mac receiving USB signals (albeit me not moving the mouse, touching the keyboard, etc), and told me to ask Apple how to disable this feature."If you make any change to USB devices (power them on or off, connect or disconnect them) on a USB chain that connects to the Mac, then the Mac will wake.
This feature cannot be disabled: it is a function of the circuitry.
If you look at the "USB Ports" section of the "Devices and Ports" chapter of the Mac Mini G4 Developer Note, in the subsection entitled "USB Features" you will see:"Wake Up From Sleep
USB devices can provide a remote wakeup function for the computer. The USB root hub in the computer is set to support remote wakeup whenever a device is attached to or disconnected from the bus. The keyboard that comes with the computer uses this method to wake the computer on a key press.
    Connect and Resume
The Intrepid ASIC contains special circuitry that allows the computer to wake from sleep mode on connect, disconnect, and resume events. Compatible USB devices should support the USB-suspend mode defined in the USB specification."Therefore, if you put your Mini to sleep, then connect, disconnect, power-on, or power-off a USB device on any USB chain connected to the Mini, the Mini will wake.
    3. It may also be that either the KVM switchbox or USB Hub (whether alone or a combined device) could be defective. I one had a similar problem where I'd put one of my Macs to sleep and it would wake immediately. Turned out to be a bad Belkin USB hub. Removing the hub restored normal sleep function.
    Good luck!

  • IMac Refusing to Sleep

I'm not sure why, but my Mac seems to be having 'sleeping' troubles lately. I have set my display to turn off after 1 minute of inactivity, and for the Mac to sleep after 15 mins.
But the vast majority of the time, my display does not even turn off.
Every now and then, my display will turn off, but then it will turn straight back on again. Bear in mind that at this point the password screen shows up, as that is how my system preferences are set.
Then the password screen just stays on, the display does not turn off and the system doesn't sleep after 15 minutes.
It's as if something is constantly 'waking up' my Mac, but I've tried turning off my mouse and disconnecting my keyboard yet the problem persists.
If I put my Mac to sleep myself then it just turns itself back on, most of the time it just starts back up as soon as it's been put to sleep.
This has been going on for a few days now, I've tried zapping my PRAM and even carried out all of the automation maintenance tasks in Onyx.
I am completely out of ideas! Does anyone have any ideas of how to fix it? Otherwise my Mac will just be on constantly unless I shut it down.

Thanks for the tips, hadn't noticed that article on the Apple site (although I did read a different one about why your Mac may not sleep!)
For some reason it seems to be working fine again, and I haven't even done anything! Coincidentally it was as soon as I posted the message on this forum that it returned to normal.
I'm not sure how as I didn't really have any apps open.
I have, however, been uploading about 15GB to my Dropbox account since yesterday, maybe that had something to do with it? It's still uploading now though, despite the sleep problem having gone away.
Hopefully that's the last of it anyway, if it returns I'll check my log files
    Thanks.

  • IMac hard drive refuses to sleep

    Hi
I have spent most of the morning trying - and failing - to persuade my late 2012 2.7ghz 21.5" iMac to sleep correctly. Running Yosemite 10.10.1, entering sleep mode turns off the display but the hard drive continues to whirr away continuously. I have tried the following: SMC reset, NVRAM reset, verify and repair disc permissions, creating a guest account and logging into that (problem still there), using Activity Monitor to close down all system and application activity, checking all energy saving and bluetooth settings, turning off file sharing, turning off iCloud drive, powering up in safe mode.
Nothing seems to work. If there's anyone with an idea - or suggestions of something I've missed - then I would be hugely grateful!
    Many thanks in advance.

  • Dual G5 1.8 refuses to sleep

The computer will not go to sleep. When I try to force to sleep it enters sleep for a second and immediately wakes up. Screen seems to go to sleep OK. However, when computer wakes up it wakes the screen too. I tried all the suggested solution including hard reboot, running scripts, crons (Yasu), minimizing amount of login items? Any suggestions?

I am having the same problem. It happens more often when I try to use the button on the studio display to enter the sleep mode. Called tech support, No help there. Cleared the p-ram no help, reviewed and repaired permissions no help. So I hope someone can help on this board.

I am own an iPod Photo 60GB running the iPod Software 1.2 (for iPod with color display).
I cannot turn my iPod Photo 60GB off/put it into sleep mode while the hard drive is being accessed or spinning. This normally means that some music is playing, but it also can happen when a track is paused. This issue occurs for both ways to put an iPod into sleep mode: 1)"Sleep" from the menu, or 2)holding the play/pause button for a few seconds. Attempting either of these methods of turning my iPod off/putting it to sleep while the hard drive is spinning results in the iPod NOT going to sleep. When I select the "Sleep" item from the menu, I can hear the "click" sound, so I know the selection of that menu item is being detected by my iPod.
Generally speaking, this issue happens when I have just removed my iPod from being docked with my computer, and it starts playing a track because I hit the play button accidentally while disconnecting the iPod. Usally the first thing I want to do is put the iPod to sleep, because I am going somewhere and don't want to use that battery when I'm not listening to it.
My workaround: If I select a track at the end of an album/playlist, and then fast forward to the end of that track so that NO music/sound is playing on my iPod Photo 60GB, and the hard drive is not spinning, then I am able to use the "Sleep" menu item or the hold the play/pause button for a few seconds method. Also, if I let the track play for anywhere from 30 seconds to a minute or two until the the hard drive is not spinning anymore, then I am able to put my iPod to sleep. But shouldn't the sleep feature work immediately? None of Apple's documentation or TIL articles suggest otherwise.
This problem is not related to the hold switch being in the "hold" position, as I am trying all of this with the hold switch NOT in the "hold" position. Also, it is not related to the battery power being low, as it happens with a full charge.
I have read threads with a similar issue to mine, however the clarification needs to be made that this "bug", as I'll call it, only occurs when the hard drive is spinning/being accessed. Many people have mentioned troubles with putting their iPod to sleep while listening to a Podcast. This makes sense because some Podcasts are too large to fit into the iPod's RAM cache, and so the hard drive is accessing the Podcast through it's entire length. None of these threads have any useful input from Apple Computer support other than the suggestion of resetting the iPod or restoring the iPod's software. In both cases, the suggested solution DOES NOT fix the problem permanently.
With the hopes that because ALL iPods that Apple sells currently will most likely have this problem, by starting a "new", more detailed thread on this issue, perhaps Apple will get this message to a higher level and actually do something about it.
I would highly suggest if you have an iPod Photo (any size) or one of the "new" color iPod's, that you try seeing if you can put your iPod to sleep when your hard drive is being accessed, and if not - Please Post on this Thread. The more posts that come up on a thread, the more likely that someone with Apple will notice.
    Thanks for reading...

To elaborate more on what Rob said. Since the iPod is a hard drive based device(similar to your computer) the disc inside spins and there is a needle to read the data.
What you are suggusting would be like yanking the power cord out of your computer in mid install of something, the chance of data lose is there and if happened enough bad sectors can arise. Should you do that? No, Would you do it? In most cases not.
A bad sector would in most causes make the ipod freeze when accessing it or make it fail its disk check and requiring replacement.

  • IPod Mini refuses to sleep when unplugged from power

Hello, I have a problem with the Sleep function in my Mini. The whole of the context is as follows:
After a period of inactivity (two weeks approx.) I wanted to use my Mini. However, after rousing it from sleep, it immediately froze. When it did respond, any input from the wheel, the buttons or the Hold switch would take up to a minute to be registered on the display. Resetting (toggle Hold, press and hold "Menu" + "Select") did nothing to solve the issue, either plugged or unplugged from the PC or the power adapter. Thinking this might be a one-in-a-million bug, I went and used the iPod Updater to restore it to factory settings and update to the latest firmware (1.6, if I recall correctly.)
That did the trick as far as the random freezes went, and the iPod hasn't frozen since. However, it has completely lost the ability to sleep unless I enable the Sleep Timer. Whether this is a result of the bug which caused the freezes, or a bug from the update, I don't know. I have tried holding the Play/Pause button, selecting the "Sleep" option from the main menu, and performing soft-resets on a variety of situations (connected to the PC, connected but ejected, connected to the adapter, disconnected...) and the device won't go into sleep mode.
Ironically, the Sleep function DOES work perfectly when it's plugged into the PC and charging the battery. Both the Play/Pause method and the menu option respond correctly. Of course, being able to sleep when it's already charging doesn't help much.
Obviously, I've taken care that the Hold switch is toggled to the "off" position, and I have reset the poor mini so many times I'm anxious about causing it damage. As it is, my only option is to set the Sleep Timer to 15 minutes and simply interact with the iPod until I'm ready to let it turn itself off.
Any help would be appreciated. While I wouldn't run out of battery charge (or so I hope) during the day's use, it's still a worrisome bug, and it essentially keeps the iPod anchored to a power source every eight hours, even if I don't use it.

  • MacPro Lion refuses entering Sleep mode

    Hi!
(note: I have a French version of OSX so all terms I use are My translation which may not be exact)
Since installation of OSX Lion I have problem with sleep mode:
    - first time I found a cure on the net - I deleted one line in library ( just can't remember what exactly)
    - this is second time and nothing I tried solved the problem: when clicking to suspend activity ITunes stops and screen turns off but never get the slow blinking  light on the front panel (and never hear the little click sound when it goes off).
Since the first time I experienced the problem I've installed a second hard disk where I've created a boothable copy of my HD - if I booth using the copy, sleep mode works OK.
If it has any meaning: I've noticed on «Console» that after clicking on "apple-suspend activity", there are numerous and frequent entries about Firewall (Firewall: Stealth Mode connection attempt to UDP ##.##.###.### from 216.55.184.20:14589 -the latter is only one of the namy different addresses that try to connect).
    Thx

    «What about a new user account?»
You suggest I create a new user account?
«What are you using for firewalls? 3rd party? LittleSnitch or anything else>? Your router provides most anything you could want from a firewall. »
I use Lion firewall and I do not have a router
«Safe Mode disables 3rd party drivers and doesn't load programs and processes. »
I've tried booting in safe mode - same problem persists.
«Sounds to me like a problem from installing and upgrading over an earlier OS - setup assistant on a new install has benefit of strating fresh, imports all your settings and programs, and also leaves you with - as if you had cloned only better - a dual boot setup where you can use previous OS. »
Right I upgraded from Snow Leopard but the first sleep problem I had (early July) disappeared to reappear in September.
Are there files I could compare between the default drive and the clone that could give me a hint?

  • PowerMac G4 Refuses to sleep

Recently when trying to sleep my PMac G4, the monitors turn off, the HDD's spin down and stop, but the fans still keep spinning, and the powerbutton stays consistently illuminated (as opposed to pulsating as it should do).
Are there any steps I can take to try and rectify this problem ?

This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
First, read things in Apple doc.#25801 on sleep settings.
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit.
If you've set your Mac to recieve faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Recieve Faxes On This Computer box.
If that does'nt work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.
    Hope this helps!
    P.S. One member here reported this (Michael Gleason);
"I have had this problem with my IMac G5. It is surprisingly irritating. LaCie's Silverkeeper backup software was the cause. By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"
Dave Hamilton provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB cards.
tomhorvat adds this; After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute.
After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.
    Cheers!
    DALE
