Refuses to copy

Hi,
I'm about to upgrade to Tiger, so before I do I'm doing the sensible thing and backing up my HD. But I'm running into some problems. On certain files, the copying stops and comes up with an error message something like:
"You cannot copy the file name 'Icon
' because the file name is too long or contains invalid characters."
(by the way I meant to put it on two lines cause that how it comes up. For no apprent reason)
The files are not called "Icon" and I'm pretty sure they're not too long or contain invalid characters. It's happening with a number of files, but I don't know exactly which ones yet cause I was batch-copying them.
Anyone know what's going on?

So I create a DMG that I put my files in, which I then copy to my FAT32 HD?
Yes. The dmg can be a maximum of 4GB minus one byte in size after compression. Besides the issue mentioned above, some parts of your data won't be preserved properly if put onto a FAT32 drive outside of a disk image.

  • ITunes Refuses To Copy Songs Without Syncing

Besides being the most annoying music device I've owned, the iTunes works perfectly for it. iTrash refuses to copy songs to my iPuke unless I sync them and in doing so it wants to copy all 12GB's of music to an 8GB device. Who came up with this connection system? There's a worm in my apple.

If the capacity of your iPod is smaller than the size of your library your library you have a couple of options.
    1) Manage your iPod manually and drag whatever content you wan to it from iTunes:
    Managing content manually on iPod
    Syncing Music to iPod
Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device: Safely Disconnect IPod
You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7.3 or later installed hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer, once you are connected you can change your settings: iTunes - Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
    2) Use the option "Sync Music - Selected Playlists. Syncing selected playlists is just like syncing your whole library only on a smaller scale and more "selectively". When your iPod is is set to sync selected playlists it automatically picks up any changes you made to that playlist in iTunes since you last connected. Anything you added to the playlist will be added to the iPod, anything you deleted from it will be deleted from the iPod. In other words the iTunes playlist and the iPod are kept "in sync".
Open iTunes and create a playlist to update your iPod from, call it -My iPod for example (the dash will position it at the top of the playlists in Sources). You can make it a smart playlist that picks the songs for you or just a normal one and drag whatever content you want to have into the playlist. If you are making a smart playlist limit it to just less than the size of your iPod (for example 7400MB for a 8G iPod Nano. Now connect your iPod and when it appears in the Source list click on the iPod icon to bring up the preference tabs in the main pane. Go to the Music tab and choose Sync Music and the Selected playlists radio button. Choose the playlist you just made from the selection and click Apply. You can also sync from any existing playlists by choosing the same setting, you just need to make sure that the size of the playlists don't exceed the capacity of your iPod.

  • Refuses to copy files

I am moving some backup files to new hard drives.
Most files copy fine but many of them say "You don't have sufficient permission to..."
I have gone into Info and changed all permissions to "read and write" and I have "copied to enclosed items" but some of them still refuse to copy.
    What can I do different?

    The exact wording is:
"The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient priviledges for some of the items."
All I'm moving are Final Cut Pro movie files and project files and DVD files.

  • Disk Utility refuses to copy 164 GB to a 318 GB volume.

    Hello,
I use Disk Utility (stand alone, on a USB key) to make backups of my system disk
to an external disk and then transfer it from my home system to a MacBook and
vice-versa when I need to travel.
Recently, I upgraded from 10.9.2 to 10.9.3 and, not long later, to 10.9.4. In
the same period, I also had an increase (not a very big one, just a few GB, less
than 15) in the occupied space of that system disk. The current amount of data
    on it is 164.64 GB.
I'm not sure if my problem comes from the sub-version upgrade, from the increase
in data size, from both, or from something else. The home computer is an iMac
with a 318.88 GB internal disk. The MacBook has a 500 GB internal disk. The
partitions used on the external disk to make bootable backups are 400 GB big.
I can backup both internal disks to the external partitions (and boot on the
resulting external disk when I check that it is usable). I can also copy the
external backups to the MacBook system disk and boot on the result without
    problem.
But, recently, Disk Utility has started to refuse copying the content of the
external backup partitions to the internal disk of the home system. It says
there is insufficient space on the target volume. If the error message is
correct, it means that I cannot backup 164.64 GB of data on a 318.88 GB volume!
For the record, the external backup partitions are OK when verified with SOS.
What's going wrong here and is there a solution?
    Thanks for any hint.
    Denis MAILLARD.

Unfortunately, OS X only provides Time Machine as a backup solution. Disk Utility is not a backup solution in the true sense of how backup should work. I think you will find that CCC is a better solution than Disk Utility. If you don't like it here are others you can check out:

    Self explanatory.
You could try creating an iPod version of the films.
Use CTRL and B to display the Menu bar shown above. Alternatively, use the ALT key, followed by the F key, the W key and finally the I (eye) key - that's (menu)/File/Create New Version/Create iPod or iPhone version.

  • ITunes refuses to copy TV Shows based on episode numbers...!

I have a lot of TV content in iTunes, some bought from the iTunes store, some I have ripped and encoded myself. Everything is tagged thoroughly and correctly with episode IDs, episode numbers, watched/unwatched flags, series and season info, even episode titles. The works, basically. Everything appears in the correct order and works perfectly from iTunes itself.
However, when it comes to syncing with my iPhone, it's a totally different story. I have iTunes set to copy over the first least recent episode of various shows, and this used to work fine. Then it started to get things a little off, so I may have watched episode 1 and 2, but it would sync episode 4 instead of 3. Then it got worse, much worse, to the point I am now where it's as if I have some hidden 'copy any random thing you like' option checked.
To try and remedy this I deleted my iTunes library XML and uninstalled iTunes. I then re-installed, and set everything up again (not a fun process!). Then I let it sync my iPhone and if anything the selection of episodes it copied over was even more crazy than before.
I don't know what else to try here. iTunes itself displays everything perfectly and in the correct order, but I really liked the ability to keep things in sync between iTunes, my iPhone, and my Apple TV. I can use playlists and manually choose which video to sync, but I shouldn't have to.
Any ideas how to fix this? Thanks.

  • My printer,(photosmart 5510 series), refuses to copy

My printer used to copy when I pressed the touch-screen button; now it doesn't. I've checked all that I can think of but, still, no joy. Help!

    Hi @wellsgreen,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand that you cannot copy with your HP Photosmart 5510 printer. I am sorry to hear this, but happy to look into this copying issue for you!
A few questions for you, if you do not mind:
What happens when you try to copy?
Do you see any error messages?
Does the paper go through at all?
Does the paper come out blank?
Are you low or empty on any of the ink cartridges?
In the meantime, please see this guide, Vertical Bands, Lines, or Streaks in Copies or Scans. (Even though the guide title may not match your issue, I believe the solutions will help).
Hope to hear from you soon!

  • Cannot copy file because it is in use

On my new iMac I have some files that I have downloaded and want to archive on an external drive. For some reasons Finder complains that the file cannot be copied because it is in use. And it is not. I have tried all that I have found on the Internet including compressing the file and then copying it. But even the compressed file appears to Finder to be in use. Anything you can suggest would be appreciated.

    Thanks, Don.
You are correct. I agree that no one besides me would know what I have or have not tired. Sorry, Kappy - thanks for having responded to my message. I thought it would be a given that anyone smart enough to find Apple Support Forum would have known to try some initial stuff before getting here. Never the less, I should have mentioned it in another way and been clear.
I have found a solution - for anyone else who may stumble on this discussion. I have sort of succeeded with using the Ternminal to manually copy the files that Finder refuses to copy. But now I can't do that either. It seems the problem is with large files and based on questions of others on the general internet, that it is not just me - it could be the OS. Some of these files I am dealing with are between 1.0 to 6.0 GB.
    Thanks again, folks.

  • Problem copying some files.  Error messages -36 and -50

I'm trying to backup my user folder onto an external LA Cie drive, and some of the files refuse to copy. The files, it seems, are mostly image or mov. files, and there appear to be dozens of "bad" ones, maybe hundreds. Several tens of thousand have no problem copying, but the bad files foul up the entire process.
The error messages I tend to get are as follows:
--"The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in [file name] could not be read or written (error code -36)"
--"The operation cannot be completed because the item [file name] is locked."
--I also get error code -50 sometimes.
Can anyone diagnose this problem and tell me how to fix it?
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Todd--
First thing I think I'd try would be to see if a different cable helps. Sometimes a bad cable can cause problems with an external disk. Also, make sure nothing but the drive is connected to the PowerBook.
Second, look at the LaCie web site and see if there's a firmware update for your drive. I found a post on another board where the person had the -50 problem with a LaCie DVD drive that was cured by a firmware update.
    The -36 error means there's a disk I/O error:
<pre class="command">ioErr = -36, /*I/O error (bummers)*/</pre>Look in your console log at the time you try to copy one of these files. It might have a line something like this:
<pre class="command">Apr 07 09:00:00 username kernel[0]: disk0s3: I/O error.</pre>The username and disk0s3 parts will change a bit. You can figure out which disk is which using the Terminal application. Just copy and run this command:
<pre class="command">diskutil list</pre>That'll give you the names and BSD identifiers (which is the diskNsN name) for your drive's partition. That should tell you where the actual error is occuring.
As for the -50 error, that's an error in the parameter list. That can be caused by copying Mac files to FAT32 formatted partitions. If your LaCie drive is not formatted as Mac OS Extended, you might come up against this problem, too.

  • Can't copy files from iTunes to a folder on the desktop

I posted this in the iTunes board and received no responses, so I'm wondering if it's more of an OS problem.
I'm trying to clean up my iTunes library by taking out music I don't listen to that often. I created a folder on my desktop to store the music, should I decide to bring it back into iTunes in the future.
When I select certain groups of songs and drag them onto the folder, they refuse to copy. Some copy no problem, but others just won't go in the folder. The green circle with the plus sign comes up and the folder is highlighted, but when I release the mouse button...nothing.
Any idea why I can't copy the songs? BTW, none of the music is from the iTunes store, so it's not protected.
    1.5 Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I run into that problem periodically. Usually it is because one song file has the same title as another song file (for instance, Knockin' on Heavens door, one by Dylan and one by Clapton, would cause the copy failure). While iTunes has no difficulty, the Finder does, refusing to copy two "identical" items to the same location. Copy in smaller batches, so you can eyeball and make sure each item has a different name. When you run into duplicate names, copy one to another folder and rename it (I append the artist's initials), then move it into your other folder.

  • No permission to copy file (to NAS with AFP support) - extended attributes?

For certain files that I copy from one of my drives to the NAS here (Synology 206j), ever since upgrading to Snow Leopard, Finder's behaviour has changed. It will simply refuse to copy the file, stating that "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items."
The source is an external USB drive in Mac OS Extended format, I do have full permissions on the files and in any case the drive is set to ignore ownership.
The target is, like most NASes, in EXT3 format. It's sharing via its own AFP implementation.
I'd have tried repairing permissions, but for whatever reason, it's greyed out on my external drives. Since then I've figured that it was probably not that anyway, which will become apparent:
I tried copying the file via the terminal and it actually worked, but also gave an error: "cp: myfile: could not copy extended attributes to /Volumes/media backup/myfile: Operation not permitted"
This suggests to me that, as expected, the target volume doesn't support extended attributes. But rather than popping up with the message that Leopard did (something along the lines of "your target volume doesn't support extended attributes so your file's metadata may be lost, do you wish to continue") it just aborts instead.
I'm not sure if this is a Snow Leopard problem or a change that Synology need to catch up with. A workaround is to compress the file to ZIP first.
Thought I'd mention it here before trying to report it as a bug somewhere. Anyone else having similar issues, either with a NAS or some other storage, in which case please specify?

Thanks guys, yeah I've been monitoring the netatalk mailing list myself: they're onto the same problem, have come to the same conclusions about it being Extended Attributes and have much better proof of such than I
It looks like they're currently debating the best way to fix it (pretending to support EAs but sending them to a black hole being the quick and dirty way, but I suspect they'll go for implementation)
It'll be a while for sure, but the Synology guys are very good with Mac support so I'm sure they'll apply the update fairly quickly once the netatalk crew get something public. FWIW, I did detect a certain sense of urgency from the netatalk discussions.
Although it's essentially answered, I'll leave the question marked as unanswered in case Apple come up with a better one

  • ITunes intermittently refuses to add albums

Every now and then, upon dropping a folder into iTunes, the individual tracks are displayed but remain in grey and the files refuse to copy over. (These are mp3 files, not flac or something which iTunes does not support.)
I must then force quit iTunes, whereupon the greyed out tracks are no longer displayed upon reopening the program.
Quite often, I can then drag and drop the album over successfully afterwards.
    What gives?

I rebuilt my library (see here), but still have the same problem. While I can add music through the file menu option without problem, I cannot simply drag/drop songs onto iTunes or I'll run into the "grey area" and will have to eventually forcequit iTunes.
I suppose my library is too big or something; I really wish Apple would come up with a better solution.
Don't get me wrong, SoundJam (what iTunes is based on) was my favorite mp3 player back in the pre-OSX days, but it's codebase is showing it's age.

  • Copy backup disk to a new drive?

    Hi
I'm a fairly new mac user, and trying to copy my backup drive data to a new drive. The first one ran out of space, so I bought a larger one and am trying to transfer all the data. I have tried using disk utility, but it refuses to copy it. Also dragging and dropping the file doesn't work either. Has anyone got any bright ideas please as I don't want to lose a year's worth of backups?
    Thanks!!!

It would help to know how you made the backups in the first place and which exact errors you are seeing from Disk Utility and while copying.  It is possible you are trying to copy items marked with specific user permissions.  It is also possible the drive is corrupt and there is a file error while copying. These have two different resolutions depending upon what you tell us exactly about the errors and how you made the backup.
It is also possble your new drive is formatted for Windows and needs to be re-formatted for use with Macs.
