  • Purpose of instructor led training requirement for OCP?

What is the purpose of requiring OCP candidates to take an instructor led course? It all seems a bit random / superfluous. Costly too if one does not have an employer willing to pay for the training.
My Oracle Press "OCA/OCP Oracle Database 11g All-in-One Exam Guide" doesn't even hint that classes are a requirement for the OCP; the most said is: "The OCA qualification is based on two examinations; the OCP qualification requires passing a third examination." (pg. XXIX). An incomplete characterization, correct?
And "To prepare for the OCA/OCP examinations, you can attend Oracle University instructor-led training courses, you can study Oracle University online learning material, or you can read this book." (pg. XXIX). Prepare for the exams, sure. But why would such a book omit the not insignificant detail that a perhaps expensive course is required to get the OCP? Seems discourteous to the reader.
    From http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=244#5 via http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=198&p_org_id=&lang=
I say it seems random and superfluous because of the following list:
"These foundation courses meet the Hands On Course Requirement for OCP-Level certification:
    * Oracle Database 11g: Introduction to SQL
    * Oracle Database 11g: Introduction to SQL Ed 1 LVC
    * Oracle Database 11g: SQL Fundamentals I
    * Oracle Database 11g: SQL Fundamentals l Ed 1 LVC
    * Oracle Database 11g: SQL and PL/SQL Fundamentals
    * Oracle Database 11g: SQL and PL/SQL Fundamentals Ed 1 LVC
    * Oracle Database 11g: Develop PL/SQL Program Units
    * Oracle Database 11g: Administration Workshop I
    * Oracle Database 11g: Administration Workshop I Ed 1.1 LVC
    * Oracle Database 11g: Administration Workshop II
    * Oracle Database 11g: Data Warehousing Fundamentals"
A modest Intro to SQL course will count? But an OCA will already have that knowledge. Obviously, one should choose a course with higher-level content. But I'm not sure I understand the logic of the OCA-grade courses being eligible. And for those funding certification without financial assistance from an employer, the question that suggests is this: what is the least expensive way to satisfy the "instructor led" course requirement? I cheapest price I see from Oracle is a 3 day class costing $1,800. It would also cost 3 days of vacation time, or unpaid leave, if an employer is not supportive of certification.

Thanks for your thoughtful reply Hans.
TO expose the candidate to techniques related to the new features rather than traditional techniques that are commonplace in the industry. That makes sense to me. But many of us like to tinker with new features on our own.In my experience, many, many more people want the OCP without doing any work. Some will use pure memorization or out and cheating to get there.
It's unfortunate that you and I get penalized by those.
    >
And to ensure that the has had at least some hands-on time, instead of only pure theory. While some people may get hands-on at work, many others do not
have that opportunityh, especially in the are of new features. Then it might make sense for OCP certification to allow submission of proof of work experience in place of the HOC, as is the case with other professional certifications.
    Yes, that would be nice.
But difficult to verify. and you would be surprised how many organizations have very narrow definitions of the job. Experimenting not allowed in some places.
It all seems a bit random / superfluous. Sad, from an instructors and OCP's point of view, to hear you think of it that way.I don't mean to say there isn't anything new any of us couldn't pick up, say, even from an Intro to SQL course. There's a vastness to most technology topics and we can't master every facet. But the cost/benefit ratio may be terribly low for those who are already Oracle professionals with many years of on the job experience. The reality as well is that some instructors are duds--that's the case anywhere. And for my learning style, I prefer self-guided / on-my-own study.
Costly too if one does not have an employer willing to pay for the training. No doubt.
My Oracle Press "OCA/OCP Oracle Database 11g All-in-One Exam Guide" doesn't even hint that classes are a requirement for the OCP; the most said is: "The
OCA qualification is based on two examinations; the OCP qualification requires passing a third examination." (pg. XXIX). An incomplete characterization, correct?A topic to discuss with the authors, and publisher. We (the user community with whom you are talking) have little to no control over this.Wonder if the authors participate in these forums. I realize you, as a user, have no control over this. But a book blessed by Oracle via Oracle Press, I respectfully submit, can and should do better--by including details about the HOC requirement.
Some do. But much more effetive would be to lodge a formal complaint or inquiry.
"These foundation courses meet the Hands On Course Requirement for OCP-Level certification:
...All of which will ensure you have had time becoming acquainted with SQLPLus, DBControl, and perhaps SQLDeveloper.I already use all 3 tools. Would love to take all the courses listed; but I'm not independently wealthy or otherwise.
    So would I. ;-)
As well as logging in (you would be surprised how many OCA candidates do not know how), these all give you an opportunity to issue SQL and PL/SQL
commands. Scary, but seems beside the point. The HOC requirement is one solution to this problem, but it seems like a sub-optimal one. Again, this punishes Oracle professionals already working in the field who'd like to become certified. Why is there no regard for them? One way to correct this, if this is a genuine concern on Oracle's part, is to include a "live" aspect to the exams. Then, if this causes a fail, those who flunk might be interested in taking HOCs to remedy this. In this day and age, I'm certain training could involve interactive SQL*PLUS sessions, etc. Only a failure of imagination and will could prevent I suspect; particularly in a world of virtualization. I'd consider a redesign of exams before I'd require people to pay for classes they may be unable to pay for. It's a bit of an insult to working Oracle professionals who want to add certification.
I agree to some extent. Again, the issue is the consistency in experience. I have met people with 10 years of experience, and others with 10 times 1 year of experience.
A modest Intro to SQL course will count? But an OCA will already have that knowledge. I wish this was consistently true. Then I mispoke. But the HOC still punishes existing Oracle professionals.
I sympathize. I'm an independent, and all exams and certification costs come out of my own (corporate=me) pocket. But life in the professional fast lane is not
cheap. This topic has been the source of some contention for quite some time.
Unfortunately a number of people have been unscrupulous in their method of getting certification - cheating, using gunners, and so on - and I see this as one of
the few ways to combat the issue. If the cheating issue is just left alone, the value of OCP (and any other certification) is effectively lost. The unscrupulous, I'm afraid, will always be with us. This problem is not solved, I'm also afraid, by requiring a costly HOC. It is in my opinion one potential solution of many, and not at all the best one. I wonder how other vendors with certifications handle this. I do know that some industry-generic certifications require proof of X years of work in the field (e.g. GISPs), as well as providing proof of various contributions to the field. This could be gamed as well I suppose. But the honest should not be punished along with the dishonest.Basically I agree with the sentiment. Implementation is the issue.
    >
Bottom line: in my view, a few alternate solutions to the HOC are:
    1) Allow submission of work credentials to substitute for the HOC
    2) Incorporate hands-on aspects to the exam, e.g. a SQL*PLUS simulator.
I'm sure the brilliant minds at Oracle, or a suitable contractor, could easily accomplish #2. And #1 might be a true bar-raiser. It seems highly unlikely to me that, say, requiring an Intro to SQL HOC course raises the bar more than a few millimeters. There have been many discussions around this. Several of us have even considered non-vendor certifications as a route to accomplish this.
It is an imperfect world. But hopefully the steps will correct some of the deficiencies.
I am sure Paul and the rest of the Certification team would be happy to hear more feedback on how to implement practical verifiable real-world experience alternatives to the HOC that do not increase Oracle's costs.
    >
Since both are unlikely to happen any time soon, what is the least expensive option for the HOC and where do I find a list of courses and institutions that offer them? In my view, Oracle should provide this information as a courtesy. No reason not to unless there is a revenue motive; and the author of the blog posts you sent me assures us the addition of the HOC is not a revenue enhancement maneuver. I'd be more inclined to believe it if those words were backed-up with helpful actions like the one I've proposed--since such a thing seems not to exist. All courses and course locations are available through http://education.oracle.com (and have been available for years) as well as the price. Oracle's policy does not allow for much price variation for education. The exception is when bulk purchased are negotiated, which is outside what you and I can talk with them about.

Edited by: ca sanjeev mehndiratta on Jul 11, 2008 5:43 PM

Dear Mr c.a sanjeev mehndiratta  fi certified "person" working in a sap support team,
If u want to get into an IT company, walk up to the security guards stationed outside the IT company of your choice and tell them you want to implement ABAP. If the security gaurd is as dumb as you, he may allow you in, to meet the HR Manager.
And now again if the HR manager is as dumb as the security guard, he may offer u a job. And now if the PM is as dumb as the HR Manager he may put u on an implementation project. Once on the inside, u can contact me. Then i can help u "earn" so much abap tht u dont have to take any "miror help from any abaper in a team".
Also i think you have done a major career blunder in ur life. after doing ur Bsc Comp Science and before doing a CA u should have done a MSc Electronics and an MPhil in Political Science. By the way u can still do a PhD in Phsycology.
Its only after doing all this would ur career shift from SAP FI certified person to ABAP earner be justified.
Good Luck to u and Good Luck to the people hiring and working with u.

  • Lack of Training / False In-Store Advertising Complaint - Avon, CT Store (Want Executive Level Contact)

    Hello,
We have been Verizon customers for many years and typically enjoy the product and service.  However, this last upgrade we had a horrendous experience as a result of poor training by staff at the Avon, CT store.  We both upgraded our phones to Samsung Galaxy S4's.  My wife from an iPhone 4S and myself from an LG flip phone.
After the setup, we needed to contact Verizon on 4 separate occasions to remedy errors in the setup of our phones and issues with account billing.
Issue 1 (False Advertising / Lack of training - company discounts):  The representative at the store wrote out our billing scenarios on the new "Edge" formatted comparison sheet and included a 15% blanket military discount to our bill, saying "yes you will receive a 15% discount on your bill".  He made no mention of the discount applying to the data package only AND even wrote an inaccurate bill number on the sheet, misleading us to a false monthly bill we were not prepared for.
Issue 2 (Lack of training - phone upgrade):I  My wife's iPhone text messaging was still active, causing her to receive texts on her old iPhone while missing key messages on the new Samsung Galaxy.  This took upwards of an hour on the phone with Verizon technical support to understand, and the problem ultimately was still not resolved (see Issue 2).
Issue 3 (Lack of training - phone upgrade):  The iMessaging service on my wife's iPhone was still active and needed to be turned to OFF.  This was not done in the store nor did anyone have any idea how to do it.  After yet another hour on the phone with Verizon tech. support, we reached that conclusion and it finally worked.
Note:  This happened to a relative as well during the exact time frame we had this happen!!
Issue 4 (Lack of training - phone activation):  My Samsung Galaxy S4 4G service was not activated for me.  I had no idea why I could not access the internet while out of the range of my WiFi until my wife figured out the 4G was off.  We were "all set to go" when inside the store.  This required again a 20min+ phone call to have to tear my phone apart to pull out the SIM card while they activated the 4G.
We would like to be contacted to discuss this experience and how we can help use this to improve the services and training requirements of Verizon.  Can we be connected to an executive level person?  We love the company, but this last experience was just miserable.
    Thank you for your time.
    Sean

Sean222, thank you so much for this feedback! I do want to start off by saying that I am sorry for all the time that has been spent on getting these phones all up and working. Getting a new phone should be an exciting time! I would like to go issue by issue with you.
Issue 1: We would like to make sure that we provide this feedback to the store location to make sure that facts are delivered when we present customers what their monthly bill is going to be. It's very important to do so. In order for us to get this to go to the proper store and management could you please send us a Direct Message http://vz.to/1fbIKzK . (If you can accept my request to follow you. Then request to follow me back, I will then accept and you will be able to send me a Direct Message).
Issue 2/3: I know that we have been having some issues when a person comes from an iPhone to an Android phone with text messages. I am very shocked that it up to an hour for technical support to understand what was going on. I know that it took some time to finally get the messages to start working, but I am happy to hear that they were able to get things back up and running again.
Issue 4: Again, I apologize that when the device was set up at the store location they didn't test out the network before leaving the store. This is another issue that we could get addressed in the feedback to make sure that we check all the major functions of the phone are working before you leave the store.
I really hope to hear back from you in a direct message so we can provide the proper feedback.
    Thank you,

If I was to buy the "Oracle Database 11g: Performance Tuning" self study CD does that satisfy the training requirement for cert "Oracle Database 11g Performance Tuning Certified Expert"? Self study CDROMs are never acceptable to satisfy the training pre-requsite requirement
Only OU classroom classes or LVC/LWC (Online) classes are acceptable (For some certifcations workforce / academy or OAEC delivery of OU training can be acceptable ... but check carefully to avoid being caught out).
As an alternative pre-req 11g DBA OCP certification removes the need for this training requirement (though this has its own training requirement):

  • How much training.

    Hello all,
As a manager: How much training would I expect to provide to an Oracle DBA? Let's assume we are on Oracle 9i. 2nd question is if we are upgrading to 10g how much training would be necessary to send a DBA to?
As a DBA: How much training would I expect to attend each year? If upgrading to 10g should I be requesting some training to make sure I've been caught up with the knowlege to administer the 10g database once it has been upgraded?
Should DBAs be able to learn everything they need from books and not require formal training?
    Thanks,
    Michael Cunningham

    Michael:
To a large extent, the amount of training required would depend on the skills and experience of the DBA. An experienced DBA should require little or no training to come into a shop and support an existing version 9 database. Depending on what exactly you want them to do, some training on the aplpication might be in order, or on particualr aspects of your database.
For example, I am experienced with OLTP systems, but have less experince in a data warehouse environment. The basic stuff like backup and recovery, performance tuning and capacity planning does not change all that much, but if I were required to support alarge data warehouse, I would probably want to take a course aimed at that environment.
The amount of upgrade training required would depend on how much of the new features you would want to implement, and to some extent the amount of time you have. Although 10G has many new features, and a lot more automatic management, the basics are not really different from version 9. You could just replicate your existing 9 environment in 10G without utilizing the new features with no additional training. However, if you want to get the most out of the new environment, I would be inclined to send your DBA to the New Features course if they are experienced with 9, and possibly to the Database Administration 1 course if they require a little more in depth training.
For your last couple of questions, it really depends on the DBA. Personally, I prefer to read and play to learn new features as opposed to formal training, but some formal training is useful, particularly in areas that are completely new to me.
Unless you have a fairly large DBA group, and and "sandbox" environment, I think that some formal training is always useful. Reading books, particularly the Oracle documentation, is something that every DBA should do, but it is often beneficial to be able to discuss things with other, more knowledgeable people. Formal training is a good place to do that.

i've not been able to figure out how to open more than one table, each having a seperate tab. every time i click on a table it replaces the one already tabbed. is there a way to do this? i.e. have more than 1 table opened in a seperate tab?
