Regarding 36.7gb Raptor drive...

Hi.
First, my thanks to people who helped me with hdd/windows installation.
My question:
I pretty much let windows disc do the work while installing windows xp pro.
All default settings even when formatting the drive by way of NFTS.
When I check the the drive via My Computer on the desktop,
the total disk capacity seemed to have shrunken to about 35gb.
Is this normal on SATA hard drives, specifically raptor drives?
Or did I goof along the way?
Thanks in advance.
Sincerely.

Yes it's normal

  • Problems copying start up disk to Raptor drive? I'm in a mess here...!

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me with this quickly, I've got work deadlines approaching and my system's not working properly... aaagh!!
(really wish I hadn't started on this plan now, but hey...)
I'm trying to copy my startup disk from a 128 GB IDE HD (of which approx only 50GB is used), onto a 74GB SATA Raptor drive (running off a Sonnet PCI card).
I want to move an exact copy of the used section (about 50Gb), so that I won't see any difference (except in speed!)... I've tried using Lacie Silverkeeper, and it boots ok, but doesn't seem to have saved all of the various prefs etc (eg. in Logic (6.4).
If I make a clone, (Carbon Copy Cloner?) it'll be about 120Gb, which obviously won't fit on my Raptor. So what can I do??? (Can I get the Carbon Copy Clone onto a drive smaller than the clone itself?)
Help please, this is stressing me out!!!!!!
    Thanks!

    Hi Vernon...
Have you noticed any performance boost by switching
    to the SATA configuration.
Well I'm running 1 SATA Raptor as boot drive, the other 2 HDDs are still ATAs. I have noticed that things seem to have picked up a bit, before things were certainly sluggish by comparison (not that it was deathly slow before). But I'd be a lot happier if it was more stable!
My main issue with the MMD's is that that they seem
to be very picky about upgrades. Anything you add
can cause them to become unstable.
    As I'm discovering...
Have you had similar problems in the past? And what was the solution?

  • Question about Raptor drives

I have a Mac Pro, obviously, and am considering using a Raptor drive for my boot drive.
I am new to Raptor drives, so can someone explain a few of my questions so I can determine if it is worth my money and time?
Basically, I am a photographer, shooting RAW, using Aperture and CS3. That is my main use of rthe computer. The files I shoot are from the Canon 1Ds Mark III and are huge (21 megapixel each).
If I use a Raptor drive as my boot drive with my OS and apps on it, how will this affect my red write speed on my other 3 internal drives (which are all Seagate 1 terabytes).
I also have an external RAID system for my ever growing library from Aperture as well. I shoot about 3 terabytes of images per year.
Is a raptor drive going to help me? Or because I won't sroe much on the main boot drive, is this silly?
Please, when explaining, or asking me for more information, try not to use TOO much tech speak. I know very little about this stuff.
    I am learning ...

Then let me caution you against getting sucked into the speed-demon vortex. The minute you say Raptor, you immediately attract users who typically pay closer attention to their stop-watches than they do their retouching skills. Most don't even use Photoshop, which is why I recommend every photographer consult with MacGurus.com. The owners are photographers.
My new MacPro is FAST, especially when compared to my G4 MDD. Would I notice the millisecond differences if I had a Raptor for boot? No. I don't own a stop-watch. I sold my Raptor on eBay.
For photographers, memory seems to be the first key to speed. You may be better off budgeting for memory than trying to figure out how to put your OS safely on a Raptor so you can (not) see how much faster your system boots. Certainly, the more storage, the better. Be certain you understand the risks with RAID.
MacGurus has some great literature for photographer workstations. Don't hesitate to give them a call and speak to Rick or Brian if you need detailed answers. They are one helpful business, probably the best resource for photographers in the marketplace.

  • Western Digital Raptor Drives Unmounting

I put two Western Digital Raptor drives (74 gig) in my Mac Pro and they are recognized. I've formatted them and data is stored on them. I've run scans on them to ensure that they are healthy, disk checks indicate that there is no issues. HOWEVER, when I come out of sleep Mac OSX automatically unmounts both drive automatically. I can repro this every time. Apple support has no clue. Help.
    Thanks,
    Ryan

My 74GB Raptor does the same exact thing on my 8-core Mac Pro. I think it's a firmware issue with the drive and since Western Digital doesn't offer firmware updates on these drives, we are SOL.
It worked fine on my Dual 2.3GHZ G5. I talked to WD today and they said to put a jumper between 5 and 6 to make the drive compatible with SATA 2 logic boards but that did nothing. It still unmounts after waking up from sleep.
We just have to buy a newer Raptor. It's really frustrating to deal with this for "enterprise" products.

  • New 300GB Raptor Drive with Mac PRo

I just picked up a 300 gb raptor drive for my Mac PRo 4 core 3.0 machine. The drive is not lining up with the plugs in the MP.
    Help.

Get the other model then, or buy an adapter sled.
    There are three versions.

  • Would installing Cheetah or Raptor drives make inDesign data merge work faster?

Would installing Cheetah or Raptor drives make inDesign data merge work faster?

I think SSDs might turn out to be slower. There are some other posts about major slowdowns when the OS and user profile are on SSDs.
As a 32 bit program, ID can't adress all that extra RAM, so you won't affect the amount of swapping required. I don't really know how efficient an SSD is for constant read and write operations, but my undertanding is they work great for fast loading of things that don't change, but not so much for files that rewrite constantly.

  • Poor SATA Performance out of K8n Neo Plat and Raptor drive

I have a k8N Neo platinum with a new Raptor drive. Is there any reason why, when I set the command queueing option for the drive, my speed test under the device manager for that channel says I am getting a normal speed of 5 and a burst of 5.5? I should be getting 50+ with this drive.
Any thoughts? I have all the latest drivers.

kweckstrom - the reason is this:
There is currently no hardware support for NCQ on Nforce 3 boards - NVidia have only just managed to add it for the NForce4 boards as you know which aint available as yet.
NCQ is running in software mode - hence the reduction of performance - I have the same problem - its a case of deciding if you really need it or not - if you do allot of multi-tasking then its worthwhile otherwise if like me you just game - then its not required.

  • HDTach Bench on WD Raptor Drives

I thought I would run the HDTach 2.61 Benchmark on a pair of Western Digital 10,000rpm Raptor Drives to see how fast they were. I used the onboard SATA RAID 0 with a 16k Stripe.
I figure a picture is better than anything I could say so here you go.
    Take Care,
    Richard

The new ones are VelociRaptor and come in the 250-500-1000GB and have larger cache and a number of improvements.
    $100 for 250GB / $155 for 500GB are nice price performance
They are SATA with more of a "scsi flavor" in size, 10K spindle and 180MB/sec
Maybe you want 128GB SSD for the system, or the 250GB, same prices.
    they are reliable and nice.
    WD Black 1TB $89
It is not about how much storage you need really most of the time. Boot drive should be lean mean and unencumbered with other stuff: media libraries and such.
I prefer to keep drives around 50% free.
Discontinued? maybe not. Last or prior model, yes. You can also find WD Black 1TB etc in old 32MB cache variety - sometimes older cost MORE not less.
I use the 150GB 32MB model as system drives and for backup system image alternate for my SSDs, in case I have trouble I can swap or dual boot between either and really can't tell difference other than slight noise - the newer VRs are quieter than those old RAPTOR which was pre-VelociRaptor and those are long gone and 2006-era.

  • Discussion regarding un-unmountable external drives and more..

I have a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) formatted LaCie 2TB external USB 2.0 hard drive which I use for backup and file storage with my MBP running snow leopard. Some times when working extremely large folders at work, I actually work right of the hard drive and it works very well. But I have observed an increasingly annoying problem.
If I keep the drive active and working with whatever for a while and then decide to eject the disk, this almost always causes headaches. Either I get these warnings that the disk cannot be ejected because; Mail is using the drive, Safari is using the drive, Itunes is using the drive...... or some other app. This is annoying but can usually be resolved by simply quitting these apps. My question is; why does this occur? I see no reason for these applications to be using the disk? I haven't found a conclusive response to this question anywhere, always different suggestions/ideas/solutions? Does someone actually know what is causing this behavior and if it can be resolved "permanently"?
On the occasional time, quitting the applications suggested to use the drive doesn't allow me to eject the disc. It is still in use, but no apps are listed and the only way to eject is forcefully. I have tried:
    sudo lsof | grep -i <filename>
And yes, I had some interesting results. Although spotlight is not indicating indexing in progress i see that spotlight is using the drive. I know you can add the drive under privacy in spotlight preferences and this eliminates this issue. But there is also "keychain access" using some file on the drive? I just cannot see why this would happen? When this happens, there is no way to safely remove the drive. I have tried relaunching finder, both through dock (ctrloptionmouse click) and terminal (killall Finder), but this does not resolve the eject issue. I have also tried stoping and relaunching SystemUIServer which was suggested somewhere, but this did not resolve the issue. Neither did umount volume or hdiutil eject /Volumes/GusExt/, it only works with -force which I would like to avoid.
Why would anything BUT spotlight use anything on the hard drive? And is there a way to safely kill any and every process using the external drive so that it can be ejected safely?
I find this interesting since it seems to be a common phenomenon but I haven't found a single clear cut explanation or solution to these issues? What makes it more interesting is that I, at home, have my own personal WD external drive with photos and my CD collection stored on it. This drive is NTFS-3G formatted through MACFUSE and NTFS-3G. This drive has never exhibited the same behavior, the only difference between the discs, except the file system, is that the LaCie contains time machine backups. But since I do not have time machine active, I don't see why this would effect the unmount process.
Another topic I would like some feedback on is corrupted files. When this occurs on a NTFS formated disk used on mac, these cannot be removed. And since Mac and NTFS doesn't play nice, I haven't found a way to resolve this. Disk utility wont work, neither will ntfsfix. The only way around this that I have found is plugging the drive into a windows machine and running chkdsk X: -F
Is there any available alternative for this on Mac that actually works with NTFS disks?
Hoping for some interesting feedback on this from anyone interested
    Best Regards
    Gus

Hi again Kappy. Thanks for your reply.
    1. No, none of the files on the drive are being sent by mail, mail should not have any interest whatsoever in the drive.
    2. Most files are created by AMBER 10 and AMBERTOOLS 1.4, molecular dynamics simulation packages. These are UNIX based and I only work with these files from terminal, no GUI. They are created on different servers, downloaded to my MBP and transferred (at least most often) to the LaCie for storage.
    3. I have applications stored on the drive through "time machine backups", but I do not run any apps from the drive. Only locally on my MBP, all terminal based UNIX programs are "pathed" correctly to my internal drive.
    4. As above, time machine backups my apps, but to my knowledge should not run them from the LaCie drive! Only from my local drive...
    5. Disk permissions are full read and write for all. Some files come from /usr/local/ and are specific for my account. But I have taken the habit of "chmod 777" them so I can always access them since I'm the only one with physical access to the LaCie drive.
    6. It has at some point, I see no indication of indexing being made in OS X, only through "lsof" where I usually can see spotlight and keychain accessing files. But I have now put the drive under "privacy" from spotlight so it should not index at all now.
    7. Yes, once a week a manually perform a time machine backup of my local drive onto the LaCie. Between backups I disable time machine.
    8. nine times out of ten I can eject the disc without warning if I first quit mail, iTunes and safari. Same goes if I get the warning, exit the app and then try to eject again. One time out of ten it doesn't seem to matter if I quit all the apps except finder, and ever relaunch finder. Some undetermined apps is still claimed to use the drive. Then the only solution of to force eject.
    Best regards
    Gus

  • How to setup x2 sata W/D Raptor drives not using raid

    Hi all,
I am new to this forum so please be kind.
I have just got myself this NE02 board along with 2 W/D Raptor SATA Hard Drives.
I have seem many instructions in these groups about how to configure sata drives using a raid configuration.
What I am looking to do is basically install 2 Raptor SATA drives not using raid,
And also have 2 ide cdrom drives.
Can someone please come back with a nice simple if that can be done! configuration on how i can best achive this.
Many thanks for all your help.
    Silent2004

In bios under Integrated Peripherals, On Chip ATA Operating Mode set
    Native Mode
    ATA Configuration - SATA only
    SATA Keep enabled - yes
    PATA Keep enabled - yes
    PATA channel selection - both
Configure SATA as Raid - no
Read the raid thread at the top anyway, as you may want to install the drivers during the XP install in case you change your mind later.
Also, during your Windows installation, just connect a single SATA drive untill you are up and running.

  • What's the story on WD Raptor Drives?

I have been toying with the idea of upgrading the hard drives in my Mac Pro to something in the WD Raptor line.
What I have discovered is there are must be two "different lines" of Raptors and I don't know what to think of this.
One "line" is made up of drives that are 300 GB and 600 GB (possibly a 150 GB in there also) and they are much
less expensive than the other "line" that has 500 GB, 1 TB (and possibly a 250 GB in there).
A 600 GB Raptor can be had for $100.00 and a 500 GB Raptor runs about $170.00 (a 1 TB Raptor is about $250.00).
The amount of storage I need makes even a small drive overkill. I have 965 GB free on the 1 TB drive in my iMac.
Can anyone tell me what the difference is and which one would work best in a early 2009 Mac Pro.
    Thanks,
    Jim

  • Issue regarding Thin Installer and driver packages

    Hello everybody,
I have recently started to work for a new company and have been tasked with creating a new Windows deployment solution.
My company are using Lenovo desktop and laptop and my installation image use Thin Installer to deploy drivers to our workstations during Windows deployment.
I have been having some difficulties getting everything to work and I want to write about it here to hopefully help someone in the same situation as me and call out for better quality control at Lenovo.
Here are the command line I call to start Thin Installer from the local computer:
START /WAIT thininstaller.exe /CM -search A -action INSTALL -repository \\wds\lenovo -noicon -showprogress -IncludeRebootPackages 1,3,4  -noreboot
Hers the issues I have expirienced:
    1. Sometimes packages downloaded with Update Retriever will be set to "Reboot type: Forces a reboot" as default. This causes the Thin Installer to reboot reguardless of the -noreboot switch.
Its possible to change reboot type "Requires a reboot" in Update Retriever and than the updates installs fine.
This causes problem with scripted installs where you cannot have the system reboot "out of order".
Updates should never be default "forces a reboot".
    2. On my Thinkcenter e93z (10B8) the Intel Displaydriver (v 9.18.10.3220) wont install because the PnPID is not listed in the XML file. (my PnPID is VEN_8086&DEV_041E&SUBSYS_309C17AA (309D17AA is listed tho)). Manualy editing the XML files to include my PnPID solves the problem.
Lenovo should really have better qualitycontrol here.
    3. On a t440s machine i have the Synaptics UltraNav Driver (v. 17.0.12.60) wont install automatically with Thin Installer.
This is because the machine i installed failed the "BIOS test" in the XML file of the update package. I manually edited the XML file and replaced the "BIOS TEST" with one from another update that worked on that system and now everything installs automatically and works fine.
Its possible that Lenovo has detected some kind of problem with my BIOS version and the Synaptics driver but everything seems to work fine for me.
I hope this post will help someone in the future
EDIT: Other people have called out some problems with the information provied in this post. You should read the whole thread before making any changes to your systems.
    Kind Regards,
    2bi

    2bi,
Thanks for posting your findings.  I will investigate and escalate the missing PnP id issue for the Display Driver issue.  We absolutely need to avoid these kinds of escapes.
For you ThinInstaller command line I would recommend not using the -showprogress parameter if you are using in a scripted deployment scenario with something like MDT and/or SCCM.  These solutions typically will not allow TI to interact with the desktop during deployment which is what -showprogress will cause.
Also, you are telling TI to include packages that will automatically reboot your system (type 1), requires a reboot which can be delayed (type 3), will shutdown the machine automatically (type 4).  We have very few type 4 packages anymore; however we definitely have type 1 and type 3.  As sclexman mentioned, the -noreboot will only apply to the type 3 packages which leave the execution of the reboot up to TI.  So -noreboot tells TI that even if it installs updates of type 3, it should not reboot when finished.
Changing the Reboot Type value in Update Retriever only changes how TI sees the package and does not alter how the package itself executes.  So if a package is designed to always automatically reboot, changing it to type 3 in UR will have no affect.  We have recently had a display driver released by Intel that will automatically reboot if the driver installer detects that it is upgrading an older version of the driver.  In a clean deployment scenario, the automatic reboot will not happen so in this case it is safe to change the type to type 3.
This leads to another point.  All of our content that is available through Update Retriever is also intended for consumption by System Update which is the utility aimed at individual consumers to help them keep their drivers up to date.  Therefore this becomes our lowest common denominator that we have to support.  This leads to situations that may not be ideal for the deployment scenario.  If we had an army of resources we might be able to manage all of our content for both consumers and enterprise deployments; in effect doubling our efforts.  Unfortunately this is not the case and we are trying to do the best we can.
Regarding the UltraNav update for T440s, I see that the XML has a _BIOS section under the Dependencies.  However it is defined such that any BIOS level will work because the first level listed is a wildcard asterisk (*).  This BIOS section is actually included for a completely different solution which also uses the XML.  It is not intended to control the targeting of the update for System Update or Thin Installer.  Perhaps there was a mistake made initially and the XML was released without the * and has since been fixed.

  • Problems installing windows on 36.7GB raptor on KT6 Delta-LSR

I've been trying to get this damn thing to work for a few days   and then someone told me about the forum here at MSI. So far I've been reading different threads now for a total of approx. 3-4 hours and I don't think I've come across someone with my exact problem unless I've overlooked it. I've had two 40GB drives for a couple of years now and I decided that I'll upgrade to a WD 36.7 GB raptor. I thought all would be good until I popped it in and tried to install windows on it. I boot off the Win XP CD and press F6 to instal the SATA drivers. It accepts the drivers on the floppy, recognizes the drive and reformats and continues until, right after the format it says, "The disk or CD may be damaged......blah blah blah." I don't know if this is referring to my HDD, but it seemed like it was referring to my floppy b/c when I press enter to continue, it asks me to insert the floppy again, and then it reads the floppy and gives the same error. I've been trying to get this to work for the past few days now, and I think I tried almost everything. I disconnected all other optical drives and HDD's except for the Raptor and my dvd writer and still same prob. I tried d/l new sata drivers from MSI and still same problem. I changed where I plugged the sata into (since there were two ports) and still same thing. I wanted to update my bios (v5.5) but the readme file said not to flash from a floppy. I don't have another drive to flash from, so I don't know what to do about that. Please anybody help!!!   My system spec are below...
    MSI KT6 DELTA-LSR
    AMD 3000
    1.5 GB RAM
    ATI Radeon 9200
    WD 36.7 RAPTOR
    Samsung 40GB 7200rpm
    LG CD writer
    LG DVD writer
    Enermax 300W
    SB Audigy
    D-Link wireless network adapter
    ....I think that's about it.
When I tried installing last the CDRW and Samsung drive were disconnected....

    Hello,
I would like to comment on the 1.5Gb of ram.
Please use 1 stick and try again.
Also I hope you are not mixing modules of different make/spec/size.
    1GB + 512MB
    512MB + 512MB + 512MB <this one is good if thry are all the same make/model/revision
    256MB + 256MB + 1GB
You can test the memory with this program.
    http://www.memtest.org/download/1.51/memtest86+-1.51.floppy.zip
    - Extract all the files to a folder, then run the install.bat.
    - It will make a memtest bootdisk.
    - Then you must boot from this disk, please test each module individually.
    - If they are all fine then try your combo and see what happens.
    - Test each module for 1hour, if you get any errors instantly then you can stop and change module.
Do not flash until you are sure that the memory is ok.
    HOW TO FLASH BIOS
    ==============
Download this run it to make a boot disk.
    http://www.nerdlabs.org/bootdisks/diskimages/wboot98se.exe
Then get a 2nd disk, copy everything in the BIOS zip to it.
Boot from the RAMDRIVE DISK, start computer without cdrom support.
once its all loaded, put in the 2nd disk.
    type
    copy a:\*.* c:
    press enter
    type
    c:
    press enter
    type
    adsfi709 a6590vms.570
    press enter
    it should flash the BIOS.
Then you must turn the PC off and clear the CMOS, (JBAT jumper).
    Reconfigure all of your settings.

I just fired up the board with the original BIOS of 1.2 and a blue chipset fan.
Do I dare flash to 1.4?  CPU temp is 142 deg., seems a bit hot?
Onboard audio will not function. It doesn't seem to like the drivers. Any tricks here?
The installed WD RAPTOR 36 gig drive is NOT recognized by the board. What is the proper setting for this SATA drive in SETUP?  Jumpers??
    Thanks for ANY suggestions,

    Quote from WD web site
The Raptor has a jumper block located next to the ATA power connector (see image below). There is generally no need to change the default jumper setting in order to use the drive. The only use of this jumper block is to enable or disable power management for the drive. The drives ship in the default position with the shunt on pins 1-2 (disabled). Alternately, the jumper can be removed completely with the same result. Placing the shunt on pins 3-4 (enabled), designates that the drive will power-up in standby mode. For most users the default position should be used.
Secondly is the drive formatted? take a look in Settings, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Storage, Disk Management (Local), see if it's there
If it is you can format it by right clicking and following the options
If it's not list your Bios On-Chip IDE configuration
