Regarding EOS cameras, which would you recommend?

I've had a Canon T1i for almost four years now & I have someone who wants to buy it from me, so I with that in mind, i'm thinking about upgrading now. I guess I would say that i'm an intermediate photographer and I usually take landscape photos. I'm also very eager to learn how to take night photos like of city lights.
Which camera(s) and lens would you reccomend?

Hi,
What is your budget?
What lenses do you have?
Do you think at all about going to a full frame camera?
You don't seem to take a lot of action shots, and in fact you talk about shooting non-moving things like city lights and landscapes. You dont list video as being very important. You should be plenty happy getting a newer Rebel. The T5i is the newest at the moment. For what you are shooting and if you found a big savings you could go with a T4i or even a T3i, which all have a similar sensor. Unless you are shooting more action, you don't need to put a lot of money into the camera. Save money for improving your lens collection if you need to.
If you don't already have a good tripod (better than they stock at Best Buy) I would spend some money there. It would help with the city lights and landscapes, since you can shoot long exposures.

Why do so many people say "fer-tographer"? Do they take "fertographs"?

You can't run iMovie 11 on a PPC G5 running the old OS 10.3 Panther - which is what you say you have.

  • Are there flip cases for iPod Touch?  If so, which would you recommend?

I'm in the market for an iPod Touch. I'd like to get a case/cover for it that would function the way the flip cover did on the SONY Clie SJ33 or the Palm T3 worked... much like the communicators on Star Trek!
Does anyone make such an accessory? Are there certain ones you would recommend?

Well, I've received my brand new IPT and still don't have a case!
I've researched the cases suggested here (thanks for the tips!) and scores more (far too many). I cannot seem to find a flip case WITHOUT a magnet! And given what I've read in threads here, I really don't want to risk a several hundred dollar device with a magnetic clasp case. I realize that lots of folks use them without problems, but I keep finding posts from people who have real issues!
And strangely, the Apple Store carries most of the Marware cases EXCEPT FOR THE FLIP CASE (the one I was leaning towards), which is their only case with magnets! Is Apple trying to tell us something?
(I wish I had just bought the Belkin Folio case when it was free after rebate on Black Friday from Amazon!)
As a temporary fix, I've put some thin clear vinyl wrap around the IPT (left over from trials years ago with my Palms) and will jerry rig something with my Palm T3 flip cover-- it's perfectly sized and right form factor! A Palm iPod Touch!
I'm now debating a combo of Power Support Air Jacket with the Marware Flip Vue. And simply gambling on the magnetic clasp problem!
Any thoughts? Reactions? Am I way off base for worrying about the magnets?

  • Mini vs. Quicksilver for pro apps--which would you recommend?

    Hi all,
I've been running the Adobe CS2 Suite of applications (Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator) on my Mini 1.42GHz/1GB RAM with not very pleasant results. Even if only one of the apps is open at any given time, the performance is painfully slow and the spinning beachball is always making an appearance.
Now, I've also got a Quicksilver 2002 800MHz/1GB sitting currently collecting dust in a corner of my office. I "upgraded" from the Quicksilver to the Mini because I had grown sick and tired of the incredibly loud fan inside the Quicksilver.
My question is this: Should I bring the Quicksilver out of retirement to do the Adobe CS2 work? I realize that the machine only has an 800GHz processer versus the Mini's 1.42 GHz, but it (the QS) also has a 7200rpm hard drive versus the mini's 4800rpm hard drive.
If I use the QS instead of the Mini, will I see a performance increase, a decrease, or just about the same?
I'd love to hear feedback from any of you out there who have used both the Quicksilver and the Mini, especially in conjunction with Adobe CS2 or similar CPU-hungry pro applications.
    Thanks!

I would agree with Doug - that typically for 'pro' application use, it would be better to use a 'pro' system, even if older.
As an example, I have a mini on my desk, running alongside a 6+ year old G4 tower. The G4 has had a second video card added to drive up to 3 displays, has had the original HD replaced by a high speed larger capacity unit, a second drive of similar spec has been added, a third SCSI drive is also in the system for booting specifically for photoshop, the RAM has been upped to 2Gb, and the original 450MHz processor has been replaced by a modest 1GHz unit. Total cost of the upgrades was less than the cost of a mini, the G4 is pretty much of similar 'speed', but the flexibility of the design allowing the additional and faster drives and video has made the G4 the system that gets used most when heavy duty workload is being done.
That's not to detract from the mini's great strengths - it's a fast, compact and powerful system for a wide variety of potential uses and that is more than ample for the majority of users. The only thing that lets it down is the lack of flexibility and expansion/upgrade options, and for pro users, those are often of great criticality.

  • Which of these solutions would you recommend?

while trying to create a login system using JSP, I ran into several tutorials, and tried creating one by using java beans to keep track of the session.
The bean stores the username by using setUserID(String userID), and also sets a certain variable to true if the user is logged in.
To create different levels or types of users, and add more functionality to this login system, I believe I could add more properties to determine the level and other necessary information (with information taken from a database), and simply use a beanid.getProperty() to check for the information I need for example.
I know that another way and the more common way to create a login system while securing other pages on the website, is to use session tracking and the session variable to set different values, etc... and keep track of the user.
Now my question is, which one of these 2 solutions would you recommend? Which one do you believe to be more secure?
    Thanks.

Arent both essentially the same? In the first, you set all properties in a single bean object and bind that object to the session. In the second, you bind each property individually to the session. So there is nothing to choose 'security' wise between the two options. Security, I believe, has nothing to do with how you track the user's session. Usage of SSL for example is a security technique.
Having said that, if we confine your question to which is a better option for session management per se, I would favour the first (a single bean). I am not a great fan of a bloated session object though. You can always query necessary info from the db using this id rather than storing it in the session.
Note you neednt set a variable to indicate that the user has logged in. The presence of the UserBean is sufficient to indicate the logged in status (assuming that you create such a bean only on successful login).
Hope this is useful to you.

  • Which email service would you recommend and why? Google's or BC's?

Which email service would you recommend and why? Google's or BC's?

Easy Answer. Google. Hands down Google is better. BC has had issues in the past and while I think the issue is a little bit better I would choose Google. Do remember that Google Apps is $50 (USD) per year per user.
I have used Google Apps since they were still offering 50 free users and has worked great ever since. If there have been downtimes I have not noticed or has been so slight that is hasn't effected me in anyway. This is not the case with BC.
I am not trying to knock BC mail but it isn't the best.

  • What kind of camcorder would you recommend for FCE HD 3.5?

    Hello everyone,
I'm very new here and have been trying to search for the answer to my question without having to bug anyone, but now I am under the gun, as it were.
I need to purchase something within a week and a half and would truly appreciate suggestions from anyone here. Here are a list of my questions and I hope you all will be kind of enough to help me. Thank you in advance.
1- I would prefer a camcorder that records to a DVD, but if tape is way better, please let me know.
2- I see that FCE does not support AVCHD. What other pitfalls are there to avoid in purchasing a camcorder that is compatible with FCE HD?
3- My dream is to have a camcorder that can record in 24p, but can't seem to determine whether FCE HD can support it. Please help!
4- Am willing to pay more for CCD sensor range - is this helping?
5-Would like to shoot in 16:9 ratio and with lines of resolution of 720 and higher, this possible with FCE?
5- With the questions above...what camcorder would you recommend?
I know some of the camcorders that have these features are ranging from $900 to over $1,000 but would consider it a good investment for things I would like to do in the future.
I hope the information I've given is enough for you all to give your suggestions. Thank you again.

They are not bad - just unsuitable for FCE and all good editing programs.
There are several totally different kinds of Digital Video - many people mistakenly think all "digital" is the same.
DVD, Flash Memory or Hard Disk camcorders produce video in a version of the MPEG format.
FCE etc. only handles video in the DV or QT format which is totally different from MPEG.
One analogy would be to buy a diesel powered car and then find that all the filling stations in your area only had petrol (gasolene) pumps. Your car would be pretty useless !
The only way MPEG can be used in FCE is by converting it to DV or QT which wastes time or money and results in slightly reduced quality.
All these cameras are produced for the mass market (where the money is), to be used by people with no knowledge or interest in film-making or editing.

  • Web page video - what file type would you recommend?

I've stood up a web page for selling things (house, musical instrument, chipper-shredder, rent an apartment, etc.) and would like to have a few videos included. The plan is to save the video on the server and not use hyperlinks to places like vimeo and youtube. For one thing, vimeo doesn't allow a basic member to use their site for selling things.
    A. Screen view size: I would like something, say, 2.5 to 3 inches high X whatever width the proportion would be (4:5 or 16:9), minimum.
    B. Resolution: Most of what I've recorded is in 1440CBR but reducing the quality to keep the file size small is VERY important. I'm not looking for Full Hi-Def, just something that gets the message across.
    C. It is very desirable for the visitor to be able to start viewing the video as soon after clicking on the hyperlink as possible. If they have to wait for a few MegaBytes to be downloaded they probably won't stick around. Also, there will be no advertising on my web page which should be nice.
    D. The file format should be viewable by both Macs and PCs. Questions:
    1. Is *.mp4 H.264 the most universal format?
    2. Should I "Share" to a QuickTime format and assume the PC users will have QuickTime on their machine?
    3. FCPx uses the "Share" menu in order to Export. What would you recommend for a Share setting (file type) so it will do what I would like to do?
Is there anything I left out that would be good to know???
Editorial comment: This has been a total struggle.
    My resources:
FCPX 10.0.3 (have not updated yet. Waiting until the dust settles)
MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo 5,1 2.53 8GB memory Lion

Passport drive: 1TB for video storage

    Hi again,
I'm happy with the Audioengine 5 which I have on the computer desk about 2' ~ 3'
away so I'd call them 'near field'. You should have a shelf on your desk so the speakers are roughly at your head height.  I'm also using a 12" Velodyne powered sub in this set-up which sits on the floor to my right.

Question:  Do I need to run and anti virus program with MAC OSX Lion? Have heard different opinions! If so what would you recommend? Was looking at Sophos. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks

Do I need to run and anti virus program with MAC OSX Lion? Have heard different opinions!
You will continue to hear different opinions here, where thoughts range everywhere between "anti-virus software is the evil spawn of Satan" to "anyone not running anti-virus software is a fool."
Truth is, this is still a very personal decision on a Mac. Depending on circumstances, it is still very easily possible to stay safe without using anti-virus software, but circumstances and personal preferences vary widely. Besides which, anti-virus software cannot even remotely provide you a guarantee of protection!

  • Which would you keep, which would you sell, and why?

This kind of question might not be totally appropriate for this forum, but here goes anyhow. If it's really off-topic, I suppose the mods can delete it, but I am really having a hard time with this decision.
I am thinking of selling off a couple of laptops for a newer (refurbished) 15-inch AlBook. I am selling an iBook for sure. Also, one of the following will go to my wife, and one will get sold to help raise cash for the newer AlBook:
    1. TiBook, 15", 1GHz, 1GB RAM, 100GB hard drive, Superdrive, Airport
    2. AlBook 12", 867MHz, 1.12GB RAM, 60GB hard drive, Combo drive, Airport Extreme, Bluetooth
Which one would you sell, which one would you keep, and why? I have my own ideas, but I am really on the fence as to a final decision. I need some other opinions from people who know TiBooks better than I do.
Thanks. By the way, I'm really not this indecisive in real life. Now for my next question: Given the choice between pancakes and sausage or eggs and bacon for breakfast, which would you choose and why?

IMHO no Powerbook as been as fine as a Titanium and as you have the 1GHz SD Ti I would defintely keep that. For the following reasons:
Far more comfortable screen to use. (1280x854 versus XGA)
DVI connection (instant connection to projectors/lcd monitors no need for adaptors like the Al 12)
    PCMCIA slot
    64Mb versus 32Mb Graphics Memory
Style - it's slimer(2.5cm Ti versus 3cm Al) and I prefer the look.
All ports convieniently on the back and under a cover to keep dust etc out.
Shed load of replacement parts available on eBay (not had to use this yet though)
and specfically because of what you list:
    100Gb HDD versus 60Gb
    Superdrive versus Combo
    Processor Speed
You can soon add BT, 802.11g, card reader or USB 2 (or any future technology) to a Ti via the PCMCIA but even though the Al has AE and BT you can't add FW800 or whatever else crops up to the Al 12.
The negatives of the Ti would be - battery is most likely to critically fail shortly and the slower memory speed on the Ti.
I love my Ti, even though it's three years old now (still 2.5hrs charge!) new Al books are not at all tempting - tell me what else I could achieve witha new Al over the Ti?
    regards
    mrtotes
P.S. Pancakes for breakfast - absolutely bonkers! I tried it once on my Honeymoon to Canada - it won't catch on. Eggs and bacon is the way ahead, but a Full English would be preferable...

  • What bluetooth headset would you recommend ?

    Hi,
I currently own a Jabra BT8040 but want to change it with one of the following Nokia headset:
    BH-902
    BH-602
    BH-703
    BH-803
However I don't really know which one to choose. For the last hours I've been reading a number of reviews on the web as well as some discussion on this Nokia forum.
It is my understanding that the BH-703 is the newest one in the above list.
Although I spend a lot of time on the phone, 8 hours of talk time is more than acceptable for me.
However I need a good sound because sometimes I'm calling from my car, and most of the time I have business calls in the office, where I have other colleagues also on the phone (open office), hence I do not want to be to much limited with a volume limitation on the headset.
I like the BH-902 because we don't need to take the phone to look at who is calling us, this is really great, however I don't know how confortable it is for confcalls running 1 hour.
The BH-602 has the highest autonomy however it seems to be the oldest one. I I don't need 11 hours of talk time.
From your experience, which one would you recommend for business usage ?
    Thanks a lot in advance
    Solved!

    Hi,
I think my pick would the Nokia BH-902 headset. It has a nice set of features including - close-fitting control with the in-the-ear plug and optional ear hook - as stated on the product page.
But still the decision to be made is yours.
    Hope this helps
    Kind regards

  • Would you recommend Macbook Pro?

    Hi folks,
I've been an owner of an iBook ('snow' model) for about 5 years and I'm in the market for a replacement computer. My past experiences with the iBook have been stellar, it's never had a major problem (there are some minor gripes btw). However because of the tiny screen size, I've sworn off of buying another 'non-pro' apple notebook.
I mainly use my computer for typing papers and surfing the web and occasional photo editing. I just want something that will last me a good number of years and still be usable. Would you recommend the macbook pro?

    artfart (Josh):
My reply may be a little late but I thought I'd throw it in just the same. There are some very good replies here, especially those from Digital Dude and cgerrells. My apologies for what will likely be a lengthy reply because I have yet to share my story with this community. Perhaps now is the time.
I would certainly recommend a Macbook Pro to anybody that had the budget, was looking for a near-desktop replacement computer, and was into prosumer-level capability for an audio and video editing (and similar duty) workhorse. This could be for anything from a hobby-level to professional level or both. Mine is a 15-incher with 1GB (needs to bump to 2) and the 7200RPM 100GB HDD. I tried BootCamp, which was very good, but I hated restarting. I decided to run with the Parallels Beta, purchased the pre-release license, and now that it is released, I haven't looked back. I absolutely LOVE it. My XP-only stuff is great. Some people still have issues with Parallels and some people have some lingering problems with the MBP itself. But I am fortunate, I guess. For now, this is my second MBP (first one was DoA), and I am very, very happy with it.
My very, very long story. Skip it, if you like:
I too was once a hardcore PC-only user. Never would an Apple grace the insides of my home or office. I could never consider the artsy-fartsy-ness of a Mac, no matter how well they were made or how good the customer service was supposed to be. They were just too expensive and too exclusive. I was basically a PC snob, much like many Mac users are Mac snobs, you know? I was/am not a PC novice, either. IT Pro doesn't exactly describe my profession; it's not exactly that simple. I have more than a decade of experience in MIS and a graduate degree but I'm more on the high end of my company's IT shop. MS SQL and management and stuff like that. So I was a Windows guy through and through. I do audio and video editing both for a hobby and semi-professionally. Digital photography is the same kind of deal for me. But I did all that on the PC just fine. My house was like a server farm. I had 4 or 5 PCs at any one time. There were even a few Linux distros just for fun. Windows 2003 domain for testing with Exchange 2003 in there for good measure. I guess there was a Toshiba laptop or two.
Then one day last year (some time before they announced the plans for the switch to Intel CPUs) I got a wild hair to buy a Mini. They were so cheap, I just wanted to try out the audio softwares and such. And with a simple KVM switch, I could add it to my desk here at home.
I had trouble at first. It just didn't make sense to me. After a while, I let the Mini just sit. Maybe six weeks went by. I got back into it and learned how integrate the Mini into my production studio. Things were looking up. I began to like OS X.
Then I began to need a new laptop. Back then I didn't know Apple had changed the meaning of the word.
But I had the feeling I should wait until I saw what Apple would come up with. They had announced the Intel CPU deals. People had begun "hacking" together ways to run Windows on these new Macs. Things really began looking good. Then Apple announced the MacBook Pro. I really wanted one of those very much.
    When was that? February?
So I started to figure out if I could buy one.
By April, they announced Boot Camp. This sort of (un)officially supporting dual-booting XP sealed the deal. I ordered the sucker.
Aside from the terrible ordeal of spending the $$$ and then having to return the DoA and waiting for the replacement (and dealing with the scumbags I had to deal with at Apple Care) I am very happy with my laptop.
If you chose to read this terribly long story, thank you very much.

  • LG G2 vs Blackberry Z30 - which would you buy?

I'm 50/50 split on chosing one of these two very different phones. Which would you choose?
I was going to wait on the Lumia 929 and consider it, but MS can take that up with VZW.
    Any input is greatly appreciated.

I'm an Android guy so the G2 would be my pick.
More apps, bigger screen, better camera, cheaper, better processor......the list goes on and on.
I would sa the only reason people would choose the Z30 over the G2 is if they are partial to Blackberry phones.......which I would say you aren't because you wouldn't have had to choose
    Good Luck with your purchase

  • Windows Vista or Windows professional for Mac Book? Which do you recommend

    Hi....
I was wondering whether it would be better to install a windows proffesional or windows vista on a white MacBook 13" 2ghz ?
Does Windows Vista run smoothly in terms of applications, wireless networking?
Also does installing a windows system on a mac slow down the computers speed or lead to problems in any way?
What would you recommend as im quite confused which one to go for!!!
    Thankz a ton!!!!!!

I was wondering whether it would be better to install
a windows proffesional or windows vista on a white
    MacBook 13" 2ghz ?
Depends on why you need to install Windows.
Not all Windows applications will work on Windows Vista.
Does Windows Vista run smoothly in terms of
    applications, wireless networking?
From what most people have said, via Boot Camp, yes it works fine.
Via Parallels, you won't get the full Aero experience.
Also does installing a windows system on a mac slow
    down the computers speed
    Boot Camp, no speed issues.
Parallels, as with any application can impact on running other applications.
1GB of RAM is sufficient, 2GB is recommended.
or lead to problems in any
    way?
Remember running Windows XP means that you are just as susceptible to viruses, trojans, spyware etc... as if you had a Windows PC.
The question you have to ask first, is why do you need to install Windows.
