Regarding iChat

i use ichat for my AIM account.i gets logged in successfully when i try to connect using dial up connection.but whenever i go wirless nd try to log in through wirless connection it says
"The connection could not be completed because it timed out. Try again."
kindy tell me what to do?
thanks

It could be that the wireless connection has a firewall that is blocking the port used by iChat to connect to the AIM service. Are you connecting to your home wireless router, or to a public hotspot?

  • Using iChat for Garageband training

There have been a couple of mentions in this forum regarding iChat and Screen Sharing where the app in question is an audio app - the only audio shared is the microphone. One solution is to use Soundflower. Soundflower itself is simple.. after installing, use Garageband's audio preferences to output to Soundflower, and set iChat's audio input to Soundflower. This sends all the GB audio directly to iChat. However, that excludes the Mac's own microphone and anything I might wish to say - and be heard.
The same problem is encountered when trying to do Quicktime Screen Recording - the audio is either the system microphone, or, using Soundflower, the internal audio application.
An Audio Midi Setup "aggregate device" allegedly allows multiple sound sources to be mixed together. But I can't quite suss out how this works.
    A block diagram would be:
    Garageband audio out>Soundflower
Aggregate device: Mac Mic + Soundflower (Garageband output)
Aggregate device is set as the iChat audio input device
If it were that simple, then why was SoundflowerBED created??
Since I have no one at this time to try an iChat with, I may try this combination with a QT Screen Recording. If anyone's used this combination, please lay your wisdom on me !!
    thanks - Karl out West

    Hi,
iChat was first developed as an AIM client.
That means you can Text chat at least to AIM Screen Names, Apple IDs (@mac.com and @me.com), ICQ and other email type names that are allowed similar to the Apple IDs (Normally a deal by the persons ISP)
Video and Audio only chats are possible between AIM and iChat (Earlier versions of AIM on a PC do better)
There is a Third Party app called Trillian for the PC that can also do Audio only and Video chats.
At iChat 3 Jabber Support was added.
An iChat to iChat Video chat can be done with Jabber Buddy lists (Screen Names) at both ends as iChat involves the same video codecs (same for Audio Only chats)
To other Jabber Clients on any platform is Text Only.
GoogleTalk is a Jabber server. However iChat cannot Video chat to the webmail Chat option as this is different Video codecs again (Flash based) and is different again from the PC GoogleTalk app which iChat cannot Video or Audio chat to.
    Screen Colour.
In System Preferences > Desktop and Screen Saver you can choose from a range of presets supplied by Apple and it also links to the photos in iPhoto or the option to navigate the hard drive to any pic you have, giving you the option from a plain colour to any picture you want.
However if the Mac has been set up with only one User Account if you change it your Husband may not like it.
It may be better to create a second account on the mac for you
System Preferences > Accounts. Then you can have all your own settings and your Address Book will be separate from his. (And your iChat Buddy List)

  • Can video chat with Aim users on a PC but not with Ichat users on Mac!

    Hello
I am having the odd problem of being able to video chat with someone when they are using their pc running aim, but I cant chat with the same person when he on his Mac!
I am running as DMZ behind a Linksys WRT54G wireless router.
The problem is on my side because I cant chat with the test accounts either.
I tried this after bothe forwarding and triggering all the ports that were suggested.
    I am stumped!

    Hi Lullah,
This is going to be down to the Staelite connection.
It has what is called latency.
This adds an unexceptable delay in the passing of data at the start of the connection.
Very few people have reported success.
The things you can try are to fool the link into passing more intense data prior to starting a chat.
If you have web pages try uploading a Pic of larger file to the site.
Just as this finishes start up iChat
You should also check that System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab has the speed to match you download set.
Hopefully (But no reported success) you may get iChat to see more bandwidth as you have just had the modem busy.
Following the launch of iChat with a video chat request may be able to get that bandwidth.
Realistically the 128 k upload even if you were getting close to it is very tight to the lowest point Apple say will work.
Speed testing a 128 k service i likely to get a result of about 80% of the figure (102k) iChat will use about 80 % of what is left (you are down to about 83K). You are now below the 100k min.
With regards to your LAN there are several things that may help if not set up already.
Only have one device doing DHCP. The way routers work as compared to modems is that they pass all routing data though to the computers.
This means the computers can be sitting in two subnets (1) from Modem to computer via router and (2) from Router. The computer can only display one of these IP addresses but can get confuse info regarding iChat.
Do not use Port Forwarding or Port triggering, twice or together on the LAN. iCHAT does not like two lots of NAT (bath are forms of Network Address Translation [NAT]).
    Use UPnP where you can.
IF you are trying to test this yur Mac to your PC you ahve to allow for the fact that the modem is handling two Video chats in effect. This means you need twice the minimum bandwidth (let alone the fact that ichat to AIM semms to like 50% more than Mac to Mac contacts.
Sorry to be the bearer of so much doom and gloom.

  • I just cant get ichat to work/connect at all

everytime i enter my password it says it is wrong, then i change it and it still says it is wrong, i revert back to the original - still wrong. i tried downloading the memobile update and it gets halfway and says 'close mail before continuing' - i close every other application open and press 'continue' (for the update) but the box doesnt go away and carerys on saying 'close mail before continuing'. it is a nightmare.....am i doing something wrong? any ideas or suggestions? thanks in advance. im using leopard.

With MobileMe taking over from @Mac.com it seems that the AIM servers can not keep up with the numbers of people adding their Names and there is a delay in some being recognised.
With the @mac.com system you could actually create Passwords that were longer than were accepted by the AIM servers.
I would expect the same issue to arise here as well.
I have a trial @£mac account that is of some age now and it can still Log in.
I have not gone for a trial MobileMe account as I will likely forget to cancel it before the period is Up and I don't want another iChat name right now.
I am sure that some of this is the amount of name changes regarding ICHat and the AIM servers.
I am sure the password character limit of 16 characters is an issue for some.
On the whole it may be just a question of time before things settle down.
I know nothing of the Mail issues as I said I have not tried the new System.

  • IChat & .Mac account - changing handle? & iTunes pausing....

    Hi all,
Two quick questions regarding iChat & 10.5...
Is there any way to change your handle/screen name when using a .Mac account in iChat? I can't find a menu option, so hoping for a hidden solution.
Similarly, whenever I start an A/V chat, iTunes pauses. Again, I can't find a preference for this - any plist I can edit to change this behaviour, or some other workaround?

Is there any way to change your handle/screen name when using a .Mac account in iChat? I can't find a menu option, so hoping for a hidden solution.
If it's change as in create a new one, you have to do this on the .Mac website or on the AOL website if you want an AOL screen name.
If it's change as in use a different account that you have already registered. You can go in the iChat Menu > Preferences > Accounts. Then by pressing on the "+" button at the bottom you can create a new account. If you want to just modify the one that is already created, make sure you are logged out, select it in the list and change the username and password fileds to the new account and log back in.

Yes this is a default behavior and it doesn't look like there is an easy way around this. iTunes is paused by default so you can hear your buddy better and more importantly so the music is not captured by the microphone if played through your computer's speakers.

  • IPhone + iChat questions

If they decided to give iChat to the iPhone, would it be a software update, or would you be required to purchase a new iphone?

It would be a software update. Please remember that there has been no official word from Apple regarding iChat for the iPhone. I for one would love to have it also.

  • IChat 4.0.2: audio conferencing not working

First of all, this question regard iChat 4, not "iChat AV 3" as the forum might suggest. It seems that Apple as of yet hasn't yet created a proper forum for iChat 4.
I'm using 4.0.2 on 2 machines. Machine A has been set up 2 weeks ago, machine B yesterday, no settings changed whatsoever. Problem: Audio conferencing doesn't work. Everything else (ping, webbrowsing, email, ichat text, ftp, sftp, ssh, skype) works perfectly fine. Both machines were connected directly to the cable modem.
What I've tried out so far:
    - repeated login/logouts
    - restarting the machine
    - setting qt stream speed to 1,5 mbit and ichat speed to 500 kbit, as somebody suggested
    - set firewall from "all" to "only certain programs" and added iChat, as somebody suggested
    - changed server port to 443, as somebody suggested
    - tried conferencing with the test accounts appleu3test01/02/03
    - created a new user on the same machine, used it
    - used the other machine which was basically out of the box
    - inquired at the cable company whether they filter anything, they don't.
    - submitted half a dozen error reports to Apple.
I'm close to start being a teeny weeny bit annoyed soon...
Has anybody got other stuff that I might try out?
    Thanks

I have been having no video or audio conferencing problem using iChat 4.0.2 as have 5 of my friends. Further two of us tried to access the Apple tests sites with no success, the same connection error problem.
I called AppleCare today and the problem remained with every test situation. AppleCare sent a Support Document, which is aimed at OS X 10.4, and was not useful.
While looking around I may have found some helpful information. I had "Internet Sharing" on so that I am sharing Airport to Ethernet. When I turned that off Walla!! iChat with two different Apple Test Sites worked.
Of interest is that iChat worked between two MacBook Pro's on the same Airport Extreme and between a MacBook Pro and Intel iMac using a Ethernet to Airport Internet Sharing configuration.
I hope this is useful information for those who are frustrated.

  • No more Ichat AV with OS X 10.4.2 ????

    Hello people,
I'm Having the same problem as some of youl ,in so far as before Tiger everything was fine regarding Ichat AV,now when I call my kids on there Imac G4 & G5 both using Tiger and Isight 1.03 I cannot establish an AV chat anymore.
If I'm the one calling I get "no data in the last 5 sec" if I'm called and accept the invitation the error message says that my computer didn't respond!!!
All the firewals are off and my kids can AV Chat with there friends.
I've tried now from 2 different place which were working before my upgrade.
Can any body help or point me in the right direction?

    Hello again Ralph
I used this hotel before under panther with no problem.
I've been to your web site (eliminating problem area page 4) and followed the instruction about the tcp/udp ports, even if my firewall is turned off.
I feel there is a slight improvement because this time the message for an AV chat with home was "not enough bandwidth".I then tried an audio chat wich I thought was almost successfull for a split second because of the change of display, but I got the "no data..." error message .
    Text chat works fine.
I use skipe with no problem (with Isight mic) but not at the same time of course.

Not yet...the L.A. connection works ~16 hrs./day in public TV now (the best post-production producer in that city, imho...and having worked for her as an audio post guy on Rescue 911 for 5 1/2 years I think I'd know <G> Oh, we were married too <GGG>).
The WA. connection raise organic veggies and sells 'em on weekends, as well as 'kettle corn'. Peak season at the moment for the veg stuff, not much time for Mac recreation. Come about Oct. they can relax, and use the MacBook Pro 17" as their portal on the world. Smart folks, but the old expression holds true...What do you get if you work your fingers to the bone? Bony fingers They really work hard.
Myself, I like the mini, but heck, I'm supposed to have the slowest Mac??? <GGG> Ordered the MacBook Pro 17" from Macconnection, gonna send the mini & iSight external to the other L.A. person. I'm hoping all goes well as regards iChat/video. Did I mention how irritating this forum is if one chooses to edit a post? Consider that done

  • Audio with Screen Share?

Is there any way to get the audio from a computer that you are connected to with screen sharing?
I often work from home and use Screen Share to connect to work computer. It would be extremely helpful if I could hear the audio from that computer. I don't expect crystal clear audio, just enough to hear in and out points on quick edits.
    Thanks,
    Heather

i've never heard of audio coming across the screen sharing window... would like to know more, if it is an option... is it an option in preferences or something?
The reference to iChat was audio converstation with the person on the other end while you are trying to diagnose their system.
It is NOT the remote Mac generated audio.
regarding iChat, last time i heard, iChat requires a dotMac account for most of its features...
iChat works with AOL Instant Messaging (AIM) and you can get a free account. I have been using this with my Mom to do text, audio, and video chats with my Mom since Mac OS X 10.3 came out.
And more recently iChat has added support for XMPP (aka Jabber) instant messaging networks. I use XMPP with my companies IM service, as well as Google's GTalk IM service.
i only occasionally use iChat with google, but no audio goes across, nor file xfers... i don't know how iChat would work either since i think iChat would require someone to be at the destination computer to accept the connection... do you have more info about how this works and what "network servers" it requires to work?
A donation-ware plug-in extension for iChat called Chax adds a iChat preference option to auto-accept an invitation to share the screen for a list of specified users.
But again, this is ONLY useful for getting audio from the person sitting on the other end.
But the auto-answer for screen sharing can help solve the, how do I get through the home NAT router and how to I find the remote comptuer. iChat is providing that service.

    Richard,
This might be possible depending on the configurations of the computers and the speeds of the communications links that you both have. iChat can be a bit tricky to set up for audio/video sessions, especially if there are one or more firewalls involved.
There's an excellent narrative on the specific topic of iChatPC at:
    http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page12.html
You might check out the iChat forums in the Apple discussion groups at:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=139
There is a wealth of knowledge and assistance about iChat related issues on these forums. There tends to be more active discussions regarding iChat related issues then here in the Usenet groups.
If you are unsuccessful with iChat, try Sight Speed (www.sightspeed.com). There are free clients for both Mac and PC. Unlike iChat, it is client-server based (iChat is peer-to-peer) so there are less obstacles to success.
It doesn't have as good video/audio quality as iChat and the echo suppression isn't as advanced, but it is much easier to set up. Also, unlike iChat, the conferencing capabilities (more than two users) are not included with the free versions.

    Hi,
iChat will Video chat to the AIM 5.9 Application or Trillian Pro ($25) run on a XP PC.
Both ends need some settings up. The AIM application more, with an extra "Tuning" stage.
The AIM application needs the Tuning and Enabling through the XP firewall (links to Tuning and an Explanation of the Firewall stuff on the Page 12 link)
The Trillian needs just enabling though the XP firewall.
Both ends also need to make sure the applications involved can also get through the routers and modems involved.
This page has links to Real People testers and some Autoresponding test accounts. Both ends should try contacting the autoresponding accounts and then with a selection of the Real People, to see where they are up to. Then Try PC to PC and Mac to Mac before trying Mac to PC (Or the other way round).
This list has some cross platform stuff
There is also YakforFree iVisit and others out there.
I hope this helps whoever sent the email.

  • For info regarding refused connections on iChat

This is for info as my problem was solved last night. After a whole week of frustration I finally managed to see and talk to my parents who live in France. We bought the New iMac at the same time and I set theirs up on my last trip to France a couple of weeks ago. I tested iChat AV from there with a friend in the US and everything was fine. I came back 10 days ago and I set up my iMac with DSL/Earthlink using a Zyxel modem (directly, no router). Surfing the web and e-mailing worked within minutes, so I was confident that I would be able to establish a video conf with my parents. Wrong! While I was the one initiating the connection, I had the message that it didn't work because I had refused the connection. It took me a week and trying other Internet connections either at work or at friends who have other providers (by the way, it worked everywhere else) to figure out that in order for iChat to work, the modem had to be configured as a "bridge" and the Network Prefs have to be set on PPPoE. I hope this helps. It worked for me.

Thanks a lot for all your suggestions. Indeed, opening the other port went fine. But I don't have that modem anymore. I decided to go with Cable instead of DSL. My parents in France have a DSL connection 8M down /1M up and my 3M down/384 k up couldn't keep up (they could see me fine, I checked my upload and it was steady at 300kbps), but my download was all over the map and I was getting "people smear" all over my iChat window. Now that I have 8M down and 768 k up, it is so nice. I believe iChat detected that we both have at least 500 kbps and that bumped up the resolution too. Very nice!

  • IChat, typical issue regarding users not showing up

I have two AIM accounts; I have one for Home/Friends etc and one for Work Friends & Co-workers to contact me at.
I put both AIM Names on either buddy list, recently they just stopped showing up on each others list on the same Mac running 10.5.8 and iChat 4
I did all the remove com.apple.ichat.aim or whatever plist files but it reverts to doing that ever so randomly.
it even happened under a different mac running snow leopard and that version of iChat. though that one seems to be abit more stable.
is there a fix or anything for it? atleast something solid..this is the first it has happened to me, just all of a sudden.....
    thanks.

    Hi,
The above pic is what the Messages pane shows when the View Menu > Messages item is changed to Text.
It will also show the Background Pic if you drag a Pic to the Chat window itself (or even to that white Space show in the pic)
There can be several reasons why a Buddy will not appear in the List
    1) You have chosen not to "Show Off Line Buddies" and they are Off Line.
    2) You have them "Blocked" or Not "Allowed" in the Accounts option in that pic then the Security tab.
    3) The same thing happens if they Block or use Allow Buddy list only or Allow Specific People and don't add you to the List involved (either the Buddy list of the Allow Specific People list)
    4) Variations on misspelling the Screen Name including:-
    a) Adding and AIM Name with @aim.com at the end.
    b) Adding an @Mac.com name as an AIM Name (And not including the @mac.com bit)
    c) Adding a MobileMe name as and AIM type (and not adding the @me.com bit)
    5) In ichat 4 and 5 only setting a Buddy list to Invisible. In iChat 5 this can be done to one Buddy List at a time.
    6) If talking about your own Screen Names showing in two places it could be a Buddy List is Not allowing Multiple Logins and one is being Logged out as the other signs in. (It has been some while since iChat allowed you to add your own Screen Name to your own Buddy list).
    7) Messing in another Mac User Account using the same iChat Info to Test Parental Controls can also make Buddies Disappear you you do not set the Parental Controls to Allow iChat before changing Mac User Accounts (it marks all none Allowed Buddies as Blocked which is a flag at the AIM server and will be seen that way in the main Mac User Account as in 2) above)
    Notes:
Your Screen Names and Passwords are held in the Keychain and are called back from there if you delete the .plists (well in this case com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist)
The Path to the .plists is Hard Drive/Users/(Your account)/Library/Preferences sometime written as Home Folder/Library/Preferences or ~/Library/Preferences

  • Final Cut Timeline Feed as video source for iChat?

I was at the Apple NAB presentation in Vegas a few weeks ago, and one of the things they showcased in regard to iChat AV was the ability for an editor to videoconference with several other people at once and one of the video feeds in the chat window was actually the output from the editor's Final Cut Pro timeline. As he made changes in the FCP timeline, he could play it out in real time and all the people in the chat could see the video feed and make comments on the edit.
OK- so we were excited because that's a workflow issue we have here. So, we bought some iSight cameras and Tiger and started to do some testing here. The only problem is that it doesn't seem very easy to set up. At first I just thought, "well, they are just playing the timeline out of the firewire port on the FCP machine and another computer is ingesting that firewire stream as a video source for iChat." except when you connect 2 Macs together with a firewire cable, the FCP system doesn't detect a DV video device to output to and the iChat system doesn't detect the incoming firewire stream as a "camera". I spoke to tech support and they said it's not something they support so no luck there.
I did find an article on Creative Cow about someone doing something similar, but it involved exporting the FCP timeline out through a Kona analog video card into an external tape deck that does analog to DV conversion which then can be imported back into iChat as a DV stream, but last time I checked, a Kona card would run me around 1500 bucks.
    Anyone have any other ideas?

    HI Jeremy,
Welcome to the Aple Discussion Pages.
Based on the Auto Responding iChat Accounts that play films I would guess they were either using an AppleScript to import FCP as the Video sourdce or usiing an Add-On like iChatUSBCam that also alows you to change the video source to the desktop.
iChatUSBcam has a new beta for Tiger http://www.ecamm.com/mac/ichatusbcam/

  • How can I get IChat contacts on my IMessage?

Hi, so I just got my new mac and I was very excited to start Ichatting. However, Ichat has been replaced by Imessage. I have a few questions regarding this. Is there a way for me to unistall imessage and get Ichat instead? If not, then how can I add IChat contacts to my Imessage. My sister is at university and she has IChat and I have IMessage and it wont let me message her because it says she is not signed up for IMessage. How can I make my Imessages connect to her Ichat?

As Niel said, if it's a first generation iPad, you cannot update it past iOS 5.1.1.
But if Facebook still offers their old app for that old iOS, here is how to get it:
