Regarding kernel upgrade in ECC 6.0
Hi,
We want to perform a kernel upgrade for our ECC 6.0 system landscape.
Currently we are on kernel 133 and the present kernel level is 179 in service market place.
In our landscape,we have 7 dialog instances along with the central instance. If I upgrade the exe folder(Solaris) in Central instance, would the kernel be upgraded in all the application servers associated with it?
Or do we need replace all the executables(After unzipping the uncar files of SAPEXE & SAPEXEDB)in dialog instances as well, apart from central instances. If so,in what sequence do we need to replace.(Central Instance,Dialog instance1,DI2,DI3....)
Anyone please clarify and help.
-Sudheer.
Hi Sudheer,
If your landscape(CI & DI) running in heterogenus operating system then you have to perform kernel upgrade manually in CI and DI because SAP provides SAR files according to operating system and Database with unicode and Non-unicode systems.
Please check in the link https://websmp205.sap-ag.de/patches

Query regarding kernel upgrade
Hi All,
Soon we are going for kernel upgrade, OS is HPUX.
1) Do we need to download latest version of SAPCAR for extracting the *.SAR files?
Pls have a look on steps involved for kernel upgrade and let me know if i m missing something
1) Take backup of current kernel directory-:
cd /sapmnt/PRD/exe
cp * /tmp/backup_kernel_old
2) Download latest kernel from service maket place put it in directory latest_kernel
cd /tmp/latest_kernel
chown prdadm:sapsys *
3) Give permissions
cd /tmp
chmod 777 latest_kernel
4) Upgrade the kernel using following commands
./SAPCAR -xvf SAPEXE_* -R /sapmnt/PRD/exe
./SAPCAR -xvf SAPDB_* -R /sapmnt/PRD/exe
Please suggest me if I m missing something or anything in these steps is wrong.

Re: how to apply kernel patch
Regards. -
Hi all,
I want to upgrade the kernel patch level for ECC 6.
I download all files in http://www.service.sap.com/patches
<b>path</b>: Entry by application group -> Additional Components -> SAP Kernel ->SAP Kernel 32 bit Unicode -> SAP KERNEL 7.00 32-BIT UNICODE -> Windows Server on IA32 32bit -> Database independent
Then, I extract all, stop SAP server and copy all these files to \SYS\exe\uc\ and restart server. But, on SAPMMC the dispatcher remains yellow "<b>Dispatcher - Running but Dialog Queue info unavailable</b>".
The old kernel patch level is 75, and I extract the file SAPEXE_102-20000972.SAR (patch level 102), but when checking system status, I found that the kernel patch level is not updated.
Do you know this problem ? Do I miss some steps ?
Thank you very much,
Sylvecast
nullMMC connects to the underlying sapstartsrv.exe windows service. Beside starting up and shutting down the processes listed in the start profile, this service will also connect to shared memory segments to find out the status of work processes and the dispatcher.
When starting the system it will normaly first execute sapcpe.exe to replicate new executables from the central replication directory (DIR_CT_RUN) to the instance executable directory (DIR_EXECUTABLE).
If you provide a new kernel version to DIR_CT_RUN, it will copy and start a new disp+work.exe and sapstartsrv.exe to the local directory WHILE the old sapstartsrv.exe service executable is still running.
if the new disp+work.exe contains changes to shared memory structures (compared to the old one) the old sapstartsrv.exe will not be able to read them. <i>Dispatcher - Running but Dialog Queue info unavailable</i> is one result of it, unavailable work process information another one.
sapstartsrv.exe will detect that there is a new version of it's executable by comparing sapstartsrv.exe against sapstartsrv.exe.new (which have the same timestamp in DIR_CT_RUN) and will restart the service with the new executable after 5 minutes which will normaly. This automatically fixes the problem and is documented in windows application log (eventviewer).

Kernel Upgrade reflecting in application servers
Hello All,
I have question regarding kernel upgrade .
while performing kernel upgrade ,we uncar the files and replace the exe file in central instance (/sapmnt/<sid>/) .
After restarting the server , it is automatically getting reflected in appl.servers too.
Can any one tell me the work around beyond it .On what basis this is exactly getting updated by default in appl. servers too ?
Best Regards
RakeshIf you look in the start profile of the application servers you will find the sapcpe program that runs at startup. This program is responsible for going out and looking to see if there is a newer kernel available at the CI. If it does see a newer version it will copy the correct files out to the application server.

Kernel upgrade from 6.20 to 6.40
Dear All,
Hi!! I've a query regarding kernel upgrade from 6.20 to 6.40 in a multi application server scenario. We are running SAP Enterprise 4.7 2.00 running WebAS 6.20 on SUN Solaris 9.0. There is one CI & one DB in SUN cluster environment and 5 application servers. I know the procedure for Kernel upgrade but i'm not sure how to go about it? Should i upgrade the kernel first in CI or in application servers? Wud it make any difference coz 6.40 kernel is downward compatible? Wat should be the chronology in upgrading the kernel in the above environment?Hi Sameer,
You cannot upgrade Kernel on application servers without doing it on CI.All instances should run same kernel for system to work. So, have some downtime and upgrade the kernel on all instances..
First take upgrade kernel on CI and bring up SAP back and check for any errors..If it works fine then upgrade on all Applications..Also,Before doing it on Production try applying on Development or test systems..That way you are sure not to have any known or unforeseen issues..
Mandatory Post Kernel upgrade Checks:
Check R3trans and TP commands
Check RFC/Communication interfaces
Check ITS/IGS or any other WEB interfaces
Thanks Anil -
Error during Upgrade of ECC 6.0 to EHP5
Hi,
I'm upgrading our ECC 6.0 system to EHP5 (on SLES 11) using SAPup.
The system check is blaming the os version (please see italic text):
Result of system check:
Window "SDTExecution Intervervention required":
Determined system information:
Type of operating system: Linux X86_64
Version of operating system: 2.11.1
Type of database: SAPDB
Version of database: 7.7.07.034
ERROR: OS version 2.11.1 out of range (too low) Upgrade the operating system at least to version 2.3. before you continue.
WARNING: OS version 2.11.1 out of range (too high) If this version is released for the downward compatible kernel you are using, please ignore this warning. If not, ask SAP for an individual release of your configuration. Do not continue before SAP supports your configuration.
So the ERROR message is wrong, the WARNING is correct. It seems the upgrade tool is expecting a version between 2.3 and 2.9. How can I handle this "wrong" error message?
Best regards,
Christian
Edited by: Christian Janson on Jul 11, 2011 8:24 AMHello,
under the link:
in the left tree select:

--> SAP enhancement packages for SAP ERP 6.0
--> SAP enhancement package 5 for SAP ERP 6.0
i found the following text:
SAP Enhancement Package Installation on top of SAP ERP 6.0
The standard tool to install SAP ERP Enhancement Package 5 on top of SAP ERP 6.0 is the SAP Enhancement Package Installer.
Download the latest versions of the SAP enhancement package installer (SAPehpi) guide and the SAP enhancement package installer tool.
But in the download directory the tool SAPup is mentioned.
So I'm not sure, which tool to use. Sorry.

KERNEL upgrade problem.
Dear Experts,
Very imp issue. please find time to read and gothrough this.
recently i had updated KERNEL for ECC 6.0 SR2.
after updaing the kerenl files, i'm not able to see the updated patch level
in system status.
Same old patch level is displayed.
1 *what could be the problem?
D:\usr\sap\DEV\SYS\exe\uc\NTAMD64
this is the path, first i had pasted (copy new and paste in tht kerenl Dir).
it had asked for u want to replace (while pasting) i clicked Yes to all.
so, it got replaced with new extracted files.
and when i started the MMC SAP is not starting UP.
then when i had serached in USR dir, i found another Dir with kerenl fiels for
01 instance (java instance defaultly loaded in ECC 6.0 SR2).
so, i had replaced kerenl files , simply by pasting in to this second path.
D:\usr\sap\DEV\SCS01\exe
then i had started SAP MMC, after a few min it was started and i'm able to log in
to SAP.
But, the problem is I'm not able to see the Upgraded value in System status.
What could be the problem ?
2 *where to check ?
I request you people to give your valuable inputs for
3 *procedure to be follwed in upgrading SAP KERNEL?
4 *what kind of fiels to be downloaded from market place?
i.e Kernel part 1 , kerenl part 2 and other kerenl components in both places
where you can download those kerenl parts.
5 *if any problem occurs in kerenl upgrading how to revert back ?
6 *what kind of precautions to be taken before updating Kerenl ?
7 *system restart is mandatory or not ?
if any extra points to be discussed please let me know that.
Thanking you all in anticipation.

Raghav.Hi,
did you stop and restart the system for changing the kernel ?
You can find latest kernel from http://service.sap.com/swdc
Choose your platform and product combination. More detailed info can be found in OSS note: 19466
http://service.sap.com/~form/handler?_APP=01100107900000000342&_EVENT=REDIR&_NNUM=0000019466&nlang=E
and you need to stop SAP before you can change the kernel and after kernel upgrade you restart the system.
For a backup purpose, before changing the kernel. please make a copy of your old kernel directory...
Cheers !!
Satya.

Latest available kernel in Market place is dw_160-20001354.sar . As per I know we have to apply sapexe & sapexedb.
1. Please let me know the procedure that How to apply kernel
2. what is the pre-requisite
3. what is post upgrade steps
4. if I will apply only dw_160-20001354.sar.I think we have to apply only this file.
Points for helpful answer.

SantoshDear
1) set system message
2) download kernel (sapexe, sapexedb), tp and R3trans (check unicode of non unicode kernel using disp+work -version)
3) stop SAP dialog instances
4) stop SAP central instance + db
5) stop saposcol
6) stop Oracle listener
7) stop startsapsrv
8) check if all processes are stopped
9) clean shared memory (cleanipc <instancenumber>)
10) backup old kernel
11) copy SAPCAR to SAPCAR<new name> (else you will try to overwrite SAPCAR by the new SAPCAR of the kernel files)
12) run saproot script (on unix saproot.sh <SID> <DBSID>)
13) startup listener
14) startup central instance + db
15) startup dialog instance
16) check system running correctly (transactions SICK,SM21,SM50 for example)
17) remove system message

Need advice/assistance with kernel upgrade planning
As information/background, I have been away from SAP and basis for about four years.
Due to personnel changes here, I am now returning to it. While I was away,
our SAP system was upgraded from version 4.0B to SAP R/3 ENTERPRISE 47X110.
I was not a part of the upgrade and have no details as to how it was accomplished.
At this point, we have two SAP systems: DEV and PRD and they are on separate
partitions of an i5 520.
Both are running on OS/i5 V5R3M5 with mostly updated CUMe packages, etc, and
PASE is installed.
Both of these systems use the 6.20 kernel at patch level 1598.
We know that this is an OLD kernel and we need to upgrade.
Upgrading the kernel used to be a really simple thing to do but now, it seems
so complicated! The sheer volume of data on the SMP is very dauntingwhen
it can be found. As a result, I have many questions:
1. Should we upgrade to kernel 6.40 or kernel 7.00?
2. The most recent support package that we have is SAPKB62028.
What is the purpose of support packages? Do they have anything to do with the
kernel version? The reason I ask is that in some places, it is stated that
you
MUST be current with support packages before you attempt to upgrade your kernel to 6.40. In other places, it isnt even mentioned.
Note 664679 states:
Before you can use the 6.40 kernel,
the following Support Package must be installed in your SAP system:
SAP_BASIS 620: SAPKB62041
To avoid the problems described in note 787328,
the following Support Packages are also recommended:
SAP_BASIS 620: SAPKB62047
So, obviously, I need to get these support packages up to level 47. Why?
Isnt the new kernel a fresh start? Why would the existing kernel and
its support package level make any difference to the new kernel?
Since we are currently using kernel 6.20, do I need to install support
packages ?
5. I know that we dont have a J2EE server. Do I need to even worry
about that at all?
6. Is there any basis functionality that exists in the J2EE server
that doesnt exist anywhere else? In other words, are we doing ourselves
(and, particularly, me) a disservice by not having it?
7. What is the difference between SAP NetWeaver 04 and SAP NetWeaver 2004s?
8. As long as I have a backup, would it be safe to create a new kernel
for DEV but leave PRD alone? Will the transport functions still operate if I do?
9. Someone mentioned an R3OPT Support Package Stack. Would this be
preferable to loading from the installation CD and patching?
Is this in addition to the new kernel installation?
Any information is greatly appreciated because, as you can see,
I have a lot to learn in a very short time.

Reformmatted, adding line breaksHi Robert,
I now try to answer a bit ...
1) So, I must use 6.40 kernel. What determines "basis 6.20"? YES - 6.20 kernel is no longer supported - even for not for 4.7 or other systems on basis 6.20
2) Okay, you agree with SAP that I need this package but...
a) I don't know where to get it - on the SMP in the Support Package Patch area ... look via the following web-page and then 4.7: http://www.4soi.de/SupportPackages.php
(I did it without this patch already, but I can only support Thomas, that is pretty tricky then ...)
b) I don't know how to install it - SPAM as usual ...
c) WHY do I need it if the new kernel totally replaces the
old one? (See also question number 9).
BECAUSE, the new kernel runs in PASE and needs other locales etc.
3) If I have TMKSVRxx libraries on my systems, can I safely delete them? YES, no problem
4) If I have PCHxxx libraries on my systems, can I safely delete them? YES, no problem (reapear after each APYR3FIX and can always be deleted again)
5/6) How am I supposed to know what my needs are if I have no idea what
the product is supposed to deliver? Try finding any useful
information about it in SMP. I can't.
so
YOU do NOT have J2EE - otherwise you would know that - it was very complicated to setup in the past. => be happy as long as you do not need it.
7) Do you have to have the J2EE server before you can even consider your
systems to be running "NetWeaver"? I just don't understand what
"NetWeaver" is. Try finding any useful information about it in SMP. I can't.
Sorry, but this is too much via this forum :-((
NetWeaver on 6.20 technology doesn't really make sense. Therefore, please wait until you upgraded to ECC 6.0 or install another 7.0 product next to it ... (but not everybody needs that - so be happy as long you do not need to install that)
8) Do I understand you correctly that I must upgrade the kernel for ALL
systems simultaneously? There's no allowing for testing for a few weeks?
NO, you SHOULD do this with testing !!!!
9) Would this be preferable to loading from the installation CD and patching?
Is this in addition to the new kernel installation?
If I use R3OPT, do I still have to load the support packages mentioned in 2)?
You can use the ways above as you described either installation and patching or R3opt or you could download a complete kernel from my website, where you just insert the CD into your drive and use LODRUN *OPT ... (whatever you prefer)

Dear Experts,
We are having one unique problem , We having one BWP server CI install on AIX + Oracle 9i, and one application server on windows application server(the server resided on diffrnt windows domain) , But now since we have installed these systems . while kernel upgrade we have forgotten to upgrade the kernel level of application server. Hence the kernel got differed.
Now we have ci installed on kernel level 196 and Kernel level of app. server is 22 . and we have tried to upgrade it to 196 but instance is not getting up after copying kernel pacth.
Kindly suggest what to do, I am sending the Devloper trace at the time we have tried to upgrade the kernel level.
Regards
Yogesh

don't upgrade kernel on windows server.
stop application server.
copy kernel of windows on AIX machine under \sapmnt\<SID>\SYS\exe\uc\NtI386
start application server.
if still fails then do following
delete the old patch number in the message server status area
which previously contained the old patch level:
- Transaction SMLG
- Goto -> System Diagnosis -> Message server status area
- delete old patch level of dialog instance.
restart application server.

ERROR MESSAGE IN PPOME TCODE AFTER UPGRADE TO ECC 6.0
Hi Experts,
I have a question.
Recently our system went for upgrade and during testing phase we have found one issue.
Error message is appearing in PPOME transactio code after upgrade to ECC 6.0
The screen is getting defaulted to Budget section and unable to find the subtype as there are no subtypes available there and showing error message as "Fill in all required fields".
Please let me know your solution on this.
Regards,
Sekhar.Hi,
- you can deactivate the budget tab in the IMG-activity 'Hide/Show Tab Page'
(SIMG_CFMENUOHP1HFW20 alternatively use SM30 on view 'T77OCTABUS')
1. Create new entries for the following KEY:
a) Scenario OME0
b) Object type 'P', 'O', 'S'
c) Tab Page 'PBC_ORIG'
2. for each of this entries, set the 'Exclude Tab Page'-Flag.
- in case you do not want to deactivate the Budget tab:
The error occurs due to missing entries for subtypes in table T778U
for infotype 1516.
Please maintain the according subtyes you want to use if you create a
budget.

Ana -
